Due to a maritime storm, Song Yuzhang was mistakenly identified as the long-lost youngest son of wealthy merchant Song Zhenqiao. Seizing the opportunity, Song Yuzhang assumed the identity and stepped into a life of unimaginable wealth and luxury. Thus, a carefree wanderer found himself entangled in a world of decadence and danger…

[Throughout his life, countless people loved him. He carefully picked and chose, and in return, he loved a few, albeit sparingly.]

I truly, genuinely to the bottom of my heart, hope that this novel can get picked up by a translator who doesn't rely on MTL, as this really is such a wonderful work that deserves a careful and thoughtful translation. It is one of the best novels I have read on jjwxc, and despite me being a very staunch 1v1 reader, I really am glad I gave this novel a chance despite the harem (though note that the ending is in fact 1v1).

The novel is set in a fictional city... more>> Haizhou in Republican era China, so somewhere in the early 1900s, a setting which involves things like the war with Japan (not really too present in this novel though until near the end), telegrams for long distance communication, limited air travel, more travel by ship, carriages and horse riding, guns being much more prevalent, and a more aristocratic social class setting. The author really immerses you in the era, and I really found it so engaging and enjoyable to read.

The general plot of involves a charming and stunningly handsome man, Song Yuzhang, who by chance is mistakenly identified as the lost son of a wealthy bank owner, and being the opportunist he is, proceeds to attempt to pull off the biggest scam of his life. Though only 20, he has an almost magical ability to charm and manipulate anyone he meets, and he proceeds to make pretty much every man in the novel fall over backwards for him. Most of the novel revolves around his romantic relationships, as well as him navigating the upper echelons of society in Haizhou, becoming a successful businessman in his own right. Note that while he starts off as a playboy gong, his relationships throughout the novel are all as the shou.

For a bit more detail and my thoughts on each love interest and also our main character:

Spoiler

Fu Mian - the first of the various lovers we are introduced to in the novel, victim of Song Yuzhang's first scam in the novel (though not chronologically), personally I hate him, and this is putting it lightly, yandere

Nie Xueping - a mature and steady man, widow with a child, not the most developed character but his presence in the novel does teach Yuzhang an important lesson, falls in love at first sight with Yuzhang which could be romantic except for the fact that pretty much everyone in the novel also falls at first sight, the white moonlight type, the oldest love interest at 32 years old

Nie Yinbing - Nie Xueping's younger brother, another victim of MC's scamming before the events of the novel, a bit of a trigger for the novel events as Yuzhang is on the run from him due to him threatening Yuzhang at gunpoint to drop his pants and get f*cked (to which I really have nothing to say), he is pretty much always off fighting bandits or serving in the military, not the best conversationalist but Yuzhang can carry them both

Song Mingzhao - the fourth brother of the Song family, a bit on the dumb side, easily manipulated, brother complex to the extreme, honestly an interesting character but a bit forgotten by the plot

Yu Feiyu - engineer working under Meng Tingjing, more of an honorary mention love interest as Yuzhang has no particular feelings about him but they do have a fling, not much to his personality beyond being another Pining Man TM for Yuzhang

Meng Tingjing - the most powerful and wealthy man in Haizhou but you would never guess it based on his interactions with Yuzhang, very tsundere, a deceptively pretty face and slender build hiding the fact that he's extremely physically capable, would be Mr. Perfect given how he can basically do everything except for the fact that he has pretty negative EQ at the start, amazing character development and growth, his bickering with Yuzhang is always so amusing

Song Yuzhang - charming and handsome, the most eye catching person in any room, surprisingly romantic and soft hearted for a supposed scum playboy type, has a soft heart and doesn't hold grudges, can make you feel loved without giving away any of his heart, his characterization is very much show don't tell for a large part of the novel and it really does take a lot of analysis to figure out his true intentions and feelings, truly a beautiful man both inside and out, so much incredible character development, his ending made me really so happy

For even more of a ranting spoiler-like commentary of each character in the novel:

Spoiler

Fu Mian - I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL YOU PIECE OF SHIT, anyone who likes this man or sympathizes with him I really can't understand, as a character he is interesting but f*ck him oh my god??, had some pretty cinematic and beautifully written scenes, and I did think he was well written, will give him that, but wow did I cry every chapter he appeared out of how much I despised him and wanted to literally shoot him dead

Nie Xueping - honestly whatever, you had such a short time, you were nice to Yuzhang so I like that, but the way fandom treats you like you're some god makes me hate you a little, has a hidden side I guess but honestly pretty boring overall, cute kid points but also too tied down, who knows how real his love is given he knows pretty much nothing about Yuzhang, love at first sight, so you like his appearance what's new

Song Yekang - the monk plot kills me ok HAHA otherwise yeah he really is just there, I do like him but not as much to his personality as other characters, understandable since not love interest

Song Mengzhao - forgotten man, poor guy didn't even get an extra lol, no real feelings for I'll be honest, a bit doglike, his depression/anxiety arc is interesting, a weirdly possessive brother overall, likes to bite, poor Yuzhang having to deal with people like this though, being beautiful really is a struggle

Yu Feiyu - just another man down bad for Yuzhang, really nothing to say about him, he's really just there as a body, pretty romantic guy but unfortunately there's nothing really that draws Yuzhang in to him, just existing as another man that's in love with Yuzhang's infinite charm

Nie Yinbing - pathetic dog man, I feel bad for you, but not bad enough to like you that much, kind of muscle head, no brains, just guns, bad at communicating, Yuzhang even says he has to struggle to talk to you, go and fight you're better on battlefield when you're away from the plot, more in love with Yuzhang's memory than Yuzhang himself honestly, doesn't really have much EQ, I know I sound like I hate him but I really don't, poor guy never had a chance

Song Qiyuan - the brother that actually gave Yuzhang a taste of brotherly affection, the only brother with actual brains, in the end though blood ties were most important to him, understandable, I like him

Xiao Fengtian - not really a love interest but he's an interesting character, definitely played a bigger role than I expected in the novel, I like his friendship with Yuzhang, they're sweet, I feel bad for how he struggled

Meng Tingjing - somehow 21 and this powerful wtf, his actual photographic memory and being able do everything perfect on his first try probably helps, boxing champion lol that pretty face and slender build are a lie, no matter how much he gets hit or how mad he gets though he would never hit his wife, love of my life, incredible, amazing, peak character development and characterization, the one person who stood by Yuzhang through everything, who knows him entirely and still loves him, who never would give up on him, who could never give up on him, I love his tsundere ass so much, author clearly loves him too, the endgame ML :)

Song Yuzhang - only 20 years old omg, compassionate playboy man, a true romantic, cares way too much about people, when he gives his heart he really gives his all, a gentle soul, kind of a sl*t but we love him regardless, weirdly monogamous but will make out with Meng Tingjing even when dating other men, kind of hilariously when with other men he's also always thinking about Meng Tingjing being jealous, knows from the start that Meng Tingjing is the one he won't be able to get rid of, clearly I am too 1v1 to be reading this novel given how my every thought is about Meng Tingjing, author's favored child, my favored child too I only persisted reading this because of how much I love him, really what a beautiful and well rounded character, I cried so much for him when he couldn't, you have no idea

I added a few trigger warnings and also more tags as it seems many were missing, and do especially mind the non-con warning, as it took me by surprise and really was actually quite triggering for me to read despite my usual tolerance. For slightly more detailed warning:

Spoiler

The fourth (and last) book begins with an imprisonment scenario with pretty much constant s*xual assault, carried out over multiple months for about 20-30 chapters, not involving the endgame ML. Though the MC is able to manipulate his way into surviving the situation, in my eyes it is pretty clearly non consensual due to the threats of death and confinement, and while MC does not appear to suffer trauma from it, I personally viewed his treatment of said rapist both during and after as a form of self-inflicted victim blaming and also intense dissociation.

[collapse]

For anyone concerned about whether the final ML feels reciprocal and satisfactorily 1v1, I personally found their love story very convincing and sufficiently requited on both sides by the end! There really is a very clear primary love interest throughout the entire novel, and he was by far my favorite male lead of all of them, so I was doubly satisfied by the ending CP. Out of all MLs, the endgame one is truly the most suitable match for Yuzhang, which is in part aided through comparison with his relationships with the other men.

A really rare 10/10 novel for me! <<less
