“Water manipulation”—the supernatural ability developed by mankind in the 22nd century that made it possible to traverse the ocean depths. Minato Yamajo returned to his old academy as an instructor to teach aspiring water manipulator trainees and ended up with two under his instruction—Natsuka Hoshino, his bumbling, yet cheerful childhood friend, and Chloe Knightley, a celebrated genius with a disagreeable personality. Watching these two as they worked their hardest, Minato started to truly enjoy his time as an instructor. However, the arrival of an SOS from the depths of a submerged city signaled the end of those peaceful days.

Enter a truly frightening story at the crossroads of depths and despair. None of us knows how this will end.

Oh. My. God. Never has a novel got me gripped and on edge as Solaris. It has a way of making you like the characters and root for them then unexpectedly becomes a horror gore-fest! I highly recommend everyone to read this.

Now, if you'll excuse me, i'll go cry in the comer.

Real refreshing to read as the MC actually talks back and says NO when he doesn't want to do what other people tell him to do. He also has a nice head on his shoulders and isn't a pe*verted and h**ny MC like other jap novels.

I will honestly say this first– I hated the characters. Every single one of them. Especially if not most of all the MC. Because I'm petty.

A reviewer said "Real refreshing to read as the MC... isn't a pe*verted and h**ny MC like other JPN novels."

Well that's a lie. He teases his co-workers and pupils, has in*estual thoughts of his own biological sister, and every single chapter has some mentions of sexual misconduct, though fortunately for me, nothing physical– else I would have left a scathing review and dropped this entirely.... more>> The girls, unsurprisingly, are all enamoured with him in some way. BUT on the bright side they aren't brainless and actually have relationships with eachother without fighting! (Yay.)

So yeah, keep that in mind for the first half. If the book was tagged Harem/Ecchi/Pe*verted protagonist or SOMETHING to have indicated this, I would be more tolerant as I'd know what I was getting into.

Anyway. The gore and horror delivered, and the author wasn't afraid to kill off characters and make the reader pissed off with its antagonists and the absolutely devastating situations the characters get caught in. The ending is icing on the cake with the simple but absolutely wrecking plot twist.

Spoiler

finding out that the person all of the crew tried to save was able to get themselves to safety just fine– all of the deaths and wreckage for nothing.

Needless to say I was rooting for the characters the whole time during the horror sequence. As I said earlier though I still hate them. Their various reactions as the nightmare went on were good though, so I enjoyed the ride once the horror show started.

The accompanying art is nice albeit a bit cutesy for its genre.

Good read!

Spoiler

Taking off 2 stars because I'm petty and I really didn't like the unnecessary ecchi though. Without it the story would've been far more devastating and/or respectful of its own potential. L.

Hey, do you like reading about interesting characters, getting to know and root for them, laugh at their antics and cute misfortunes; characters you expect to be part of the main cast which you'll be able to enjoy throughout the whole story?

Do you like reading about these characters being promptly mu*dered by monsters in a sudden turn towards a Resident Evil-type horror story for no reason?

No? Then stay the f**k away from this.

I can't rate this because I'm biased as f**k... I have a tremendous gripe towards having such misleading... more>> first chapters. Feels like the RE-story-turn was forced for no reason.

And I actually enjoy the Resident Evil series! Mostly because it doesn't make me get to know the characters too deeply before killing them off in a horrible manner. Imagine if the first half an hour of RE4 was a school VN with Leon and (let's say) Mike enjoying their simple life, sharing their dreams and interests, struggling through tough times together.

That's basically what the beginning of this is. <<less
