My cup of tea. I've always liked misunderstandings as the main theme of quick bl novels. This one didn't have much conflict but it was well written and translated.

Actual rating is between 2.5 and 3. Me saying I have a bone to pick with this novel is an understatement to say the least.

Thank you to the translator for your translation though! I don't have a problem with the author by any means, and the novel isn't necessarily BAD by any means, so please take this as you will.

Main rant/review: (spoilers across the board)

The novel felt pretty flat and lukewarm for me. I guess some parts were realistic but that's definitely said VERY lightly and honestly, some parts... more>> could've been way more fleshed out and it felt very rushed at times. Especially since the ending was so abrupt, coupled with the fact that it seems the author just jumps to plot points/time periods with no prior connection to previous chapters sometimes.

It was entertaining at first for me since the parts I'd get annoyed about were just so ridiculous I had to laugh but, as the novel progressed it just started to become a hindrance and I really didn't like how the habits of the ML and MC were being portrayed as "cute."

Spoiler

First off, the ML is not homophobic AT ALL. Some of the things he says are definitely a bit weird but he's not homophobic at all. Though, it's later revealed that he didn't like the MC because he doesn't like feminine men (a sissy as he called the MC) which literally had me like ??? The homophobic narrative was pushed WAYY too hard in my opinion, like why... would you do that?

Also the ML literally does not know how to do anything. Bad communication skills early on, can't fold laundry or cook. Like what can you do? (More personal ick than anything!!)

The characterization of the MC bothered me a lot more because he's kind of characterized as this "s*upidly cute" character but in reality, he's SUPER self destructive (probably because of the low self esteem) and it was really uncomfortable for me to see played out!! (The way I described his characterization in my notes was as a "maidenly, pure virg*n")

There's an instance where the ML follows the MC home to make sure he's safe and it was just so ?!?!?!? weird?? AND THEN THE FACT THAT WHEN THEY MET UP THE LIGHTS WERE TURNED OFF??? Red flags across the board!!! I also didnt like how the MC was always trying to push Andrew (ML) to meet up or to have s*x when the ML would say no everytime. Same with the ML, he doesn't know how to respect boundaries!! Wouldn't let go or leave the MC alone when asked and it made me so uncomfortable!

The whole conflict resolution was literally just "I won't leave you alone until you forgive me" which was super weird! Also they literally just kissed, had s*x, and everything was resolved??

Sorry this is all over the place lol but it was just so uncomfortable to see played out? In my opinion, the ML came off as manipulative at times and coupled with the fact that MC is so dependent on his persona on the dating app for his happiness was just a big no for me! (I also didnt like how some of the comments were trying to portray it as cute because it's not!! This is not just a novel, it's dangerous and can get you k*lled in real life! No accountability from the MC at all!!)

Also the MC had this way of thinking that was like.. if people didn't welcome him or talk to him then it's because of the ML or something like that which was so ??? because first of all, it's a university?? There was BARE people in that lab like trust me, no one cares if this one guy doesn't talk to you?? And also ML had like 3 "friends" (if you can even call them that lmao?)

It started great. I have been reading some great novels with translations still ongoing, so I decided to try reading some short novels to help with the wait.

I stumbled upon this and I instantly loved it. It was good until it got to a point where I thought, thank God this ended at Chapter 33.

It was almost at the end and may I say if you meet a guy online and he turns off the lights in the room of the hotel you are to meet, then run.

Some people are... more>> feeling pity for the MC and I just want to say something: college is not a kindergarten where you only meet and know the people in your class.

It's a university for God's sake, don't tell me that the whole university ostracized you.

This novel made the world seem so small that if you don't have any friends in the whole university then the outside world doesn't exist. Which is ridiculous.

The ML only had like what 3 or 4 friends and how many people were there in that lab? The whole world isn't going to revolve around the ML. There must be people either powerful than the ML or don't like the ML just like he (the ML) doesn't like the MC.

It seems like, not liking someone nowadays means a bad thing and not a personal opinion. To think it was all a misunderstanding as well.

I would feel for the MC, but only if he were an introvert. As an extrovert according to the author's description, you would expect more.

I would have loved this novel but some things made me reconsider. A romance that started out strong completely tasted bland by the end.

The increase in stars are mainly due to the translation. They did a good job.

This is a four star novel considering only the beginning. <<less

Meh, I hate the ML so much. The couple is so unreasonable. A frustrating read. The gong is homophobic and seems to hate “sissy” men (f*ck him so much) he acts manipulative, a walking red flag. As for the shou... He’s fine, ig. Really short read, I only read this for 7 hours including breaks and my nap time.

I like how they were matched up with the dating app thanks to Song Yuanxun's friend. In the earlier part when Fang Zhaomu was being outcast by the class it feels really horrible. Not exactly school bullying but more of an emotional one.

It was funny when in order to avoid being recognised by Fang Zhaomu, Song Yuanxun had to fake losing his voice. While it was a bad move to cheat on feelings behind a mask on social media but tbh he wasn't really cheating. He was indeed falling in... more>> love with Zhaomu.

I appreciate that Song Yuanxun rejected Mu's advancement under the guise of Andrew because he did not want to continue lying to him. After he was exposed, he also didn't find any excuses and was honest with everything. I really think he isn't a scum gong at all.

Thereafter his silly antics to chase his wife back was quite adorable and touching. He really did remember everything Zhaomu said.

I really like Zhaomu as he's really gentle and soft hearted. Also although he seems "soft" he is very flirty and knows how to talk.

The ending was quite open ended and I wished there were extras to wrap up some of the ends. Yes, they are definitely together but I just wanted more. Overall it's a really sweet novel. <<less

I am honestly lost as how to review this novel. It's a bit too fast paced. Frankly doesn't gives off an air of novel but like a fanfic.

The author needs to work hard on their skills.

A quick, pleasant read that covers all the emotions. There's angst, drama, a spicy sprinkling of smut, and fluff.

Of course, not perfect. Imo the resolution was a little rushed, and ML was forgiven a bit too easily. There are several plot conveniences and inconsistent characterization (primarily with the MC), for example the whole part with the ostracization. It was just super vague and a bit confusing. That was something that could have been explained or expanded better and given more emotional value, like how it gradually impacted the MC's emotional... more>> and mental well being; especially since the name of this novel is "social outcasts" lol. But doesn't really take away too much from the story, which centers on the slow burn between the two main characters.

Although most of the interactions were done online, it was still entertaining to read and you can clearly see how they start to fall in love with each other, each in their separate ways, and through a digital screen. The sequences of them meeting up with one another and the reveal was powerful and rather realistic (other than the overload of plot conveniences, storm, phone breaks, planes cancel, etc. But then again, nothing new) specifically in regards to the MC's reaction.

As for characters... eh. Side characters- who? MC- pretty relatable, had realistic emotions, but sometimes inconsistent and is a bit too soft hearted (however, this was also mentioned as one of his "weaknesses", so whether this is good or bad might be something that is left up to the subjective views of the reader). ML- stoic, pretty cliche and nothing new. Which doesn't have to be a bad thing. I do think he is was a solid character and the fact that he can gain so many's sympathy and forgiveness is definitely something to note.

Overall: Enjoyable, nothing amazing, but I felt that it nailed some emotional moments pretty well. <<less

First of all, there is nothing homophobic in this book AT ALL. It's just a misunderstanding.

For me, this book is quite short with only 33 chapters, and you can finish it in one sitting. It's a light story, but still will make you feel pitter patter.

Spoiler

Especially when Andrew reveals his true identity

It was a good read, and one of the first ever danmei that I've read.

AHH- this novel gets bonus points for making me feel like I could do exactly what ML did. &Amp; I don't mean it in the way that ML is able to catch the MC but moreso in the nature of his awkward online dating skills lol. It was pretty nervewracking to read through our icy, stoic, & awfully rigid ML pull off some AWKWARD moves to try & gain MC's attention. Don't get me wrong though; his slip-ups were rather cute. I love the premise: a social outcast in his... more>> lab at school somehow matches with his cold & indifferent schoolmate who happens to dislike the former. Very Your Distance vibes, which caught my initial interest. But overall the story was pretty heartfelt & nice.

Also gonna take the opportunity to listen to the audio drama! <<less

So, how to say it... The story are cliche. You know they are going to ended up being together, but what I like is the process. Although I know the pain will coming, which actually good since I will hate it if the MC just forgive our bastard ML that easily.

Anyway I like it, so here is 5* to help the rating.

I'm giving this a 5 star rating with sadness in my heart because I wish I could have been able to give it a 10-star rating. It's such a beautiful read and it's like reading a boys' love fairytale.

I'm surprised that some people gave this a low rating because they expected the angst to be dragged out longer than it was. Gosh! That was the hardest part of reading this novel and I had to keep fighting back tears. I'm glad it was resolved as quickly as it was because... more>> those were heartbreaking moments for me.

I'm happy the angst wasn't even as serious as I was scared it would be because I was expecting some crazy love triangle and I am so glad there is none of that.

This novel is all fluff and zero unnecessary drama. It's currently one of my favourite reads and my only regret is that their lovey-dovey moments weren't dragged out for longer. I recommend it 100% <<less

This is pretty simple and quick. Novel for one evening though it's even smaller. At first I don't think that ML was homophobic but this is good. We can see pov both characters and can understand their feels better. I all time smiled when ML showed his feelings but hid them behind a stone face. This is so cute huh. I really enjoyed their tender and a bit childish feelings how they step by step fall in love. But in my opinion this is very short and small disclosed. I... more>> just think this is fun and fluffy novel about two silly children heh. <<less

Okay story but I don't like the start that much ... more>>
Spoiler

I kinda felt bad about MC's situation at the start, he became a social outcast in their classes because of ML not knowing him personally but rejecting MC approaching him for friendship. (Because someone hinted at him that maybe MC is doing something with the Proffessor to get the exchange student slot) which in turn makes MC life there as an exchange student lonely with no friends. But after getting to know MC from the dating app, he realizes that MC is a good person and started to get attracted to him.. ML lied to him about who he was which is really not good, lol if ML was ugly then this would be a story of catfishing, lol but since he is handsome then this story is sweet. MC was devastated when he found out about the lies, but later on because of ML persistence in wooing him, he accepted ML and thus Happy Ending.

[collapse]

The story was built up with lies but since ML is handsome, everything goes well in the end lol I will still give this a five eventhough the ML is a scum at the beginning since I am bias with Danmei. Thanks for translating this!!!????? <<less

Everyone said ML was innocent, I found it ridiculous. MC was alone and ML did not prevent her from being excluded, then when they matched, she attracted his attention, but this time, even though he said he was not lying, he lied and manipulated her many times. I mean, the only good thing was that he didn't go all the way in bed. I think the only fault for MC is his overconfidence and vomiting-like reaction. It's understandable that he didn't even turn on the light when ML said my... more>> face wasn't good...

Anyway, it didn't drag the man down as much as I wanted. MC is a slightly cheesy read. <<less

I quite liked this story, had a pretty realistic depiction of both the MC and ML and had a happy ending. I kinda wish we could've seen more about both, we get both points of view but since I liked the story I felt like it wasn't enough. It would make a great drama imo, the pacing was written well and the characters are unique and have good and bad aspects which make them fun to read about.

I might read this again sometime in the future. Future me, you might... more>> like the drama, it's not drawn out too long and it ends nicely! <<less

I can enjoy scum gong stories with copious amounts of begging in apology, although it’s not my first choice in stories... but this novel is a bit of a waste.

Written in an engaging, easy to read manner, the words and scenarios just come off the page. The initial cringe of the MC’s secondhand embarrassment clinginess and the growing sins of the ML is all in line with a good scum gong novel. My emotions plummeted together with the MC when the reveal happened and I felt yes! That’s the feeling... more>> you need to get with scum gong novels—the slow lead up to the unavoidable eventual deep despair of the MC. Was quite pleased at this point.

The part where it went ehh for me was the begging and eventual forgiveness of MC to ML. Like it just doesn’t make sense to me. It is repeated multiple times that MC is a sociable person who has loads of friends/fans/people who confessed to him before back in his own country. Why would he give in just because some dickhead follows him around while walking and falls sick? ML also shows some obvious stalker tendencies (how did he even find out the hotel details) which eh I could be ok with (very in line with old school shoujou manga MLs). More initial misunderstandings would also have helped make him more likeable. As it is he was pretty much a third party bully. Who suddenly turned into some soft mushy clingy ML—this was attempted to gradually build up but felt quite time skippy.

I think I really wanted a revenge arc hahaha. Like MC lets ML do him then disappears off like yeah screw you then with a second ML stir some sh*t then MC can eventually realise he enjoyed his interactions with ML in his other persona more, etc etc. and reunion!

Smut was not bad. Couldn’t really appreciate it ‘cause I was upset and looking for more.

Ah well. Enjoyable to read once and cruise along it but likely wouldn’t re-read. Unless there’s an alternate extended ending haha. Translation was excellent. <<less

It's realistic and the reactions were not over the top.

However I feel it's lacking and it was rush in the last part.

The author could have finished this to 70 chapters and solidified the story of the characters. The beginning which was the build up of the story is so great then it reach the peak when the two fight and then it slumped down after the fight. The story could have been great if the author could have put the struggle in long distance relationship it would make it more... more>> realistic and the getting to know part to develop their feelings not as Andrew and Xiaomu but as Song Yuan Xun and Xiaomu. The couples interaction was lacking all of it just centered to that chatting with Andrew. And could have prolonged their journey now as lovers. The story could have a lot of potential if it weren't rushed.

It was sweet and fluffy if you are just looking for a short read.. Try this one.. <<less

Overall, I liked the story. The only issue I have is how naive MC was. He trusted a stranger from a dating app; they exchanged two sentences, and he already wanted to meet another person. That's a bit crazy, in my opinion.

In other aspects, I loved MC. He was ostracized, had difficulties adjusting to a different country and new university, and was criticized by classmates, but he didn't complain and didn't tell his parents in order to not make them worry. To deal with stress and find someone to talk... more>> to, he decided to give a dating app a try and was matched with ML. I don't think that ML is a particularly bad person; it's just that he lacks relationship experience and acts like an idiot. He's a young master who has never experienced any hardship; he was always accepted, not because of his character but because of his status. His character isn't great, actually, but because of his status, everyone ignores that fact in order to curry favor. MC was the first. He gave him a hard time and didn't forgive him easily.

Of course, the story wasn't perfect and has a few flaws, but it's short and doesn't take much time to read; The storyline also wasn't bad; there were misunderstandings and slight angst, but things weren't stale, so it was pleasant to read. <<less
