The beautiful snow leopard would bite his tail whenever he’s nervous. When he was sent to the snow wolf king’s bedroom, he bit his tail tremblingly.

Snow Wolf King: What are you afraid of? I wouldn’t eat you.

Snow Leopard: I’m afraid you’ll XX my OO.

Snow Wolf King: Then you will have to forgive me, for this king is precisely here for that reason.

Snow Leopard: But I heard only the snow wolves can be queen…?

Snow Wolf King: Was there such a rule? I’ll go ask a biologist.

Three days later, the northern biologists expressed: Snow leopard is a type of snow wolf.

Love story between cross-species demons in an impracticable setting.

For some reason, I keep feeling that this work is kinda satirical, at least I'm sure it's mocking some cliché plot points. This feeling was further enhanced by the usage of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as a safe word.

I think most of the comedic elements in the story are driven by exaggerated and ridiculous events typical in these kinds of novels.

The setting is pretty interesting btw. Think Chinese palace harem but in modern day.

Very entertaining but too short. I wish there were additional chapters detailing the 2nd phase of the main couple's relationship.

I really loved this story! It's not long and very cute and entertaining. The MC is a simple cute snow leopard who just goes with the flow. Had to MTL to read the story and it was a bit of a struggle but you get the gist of the story.

Definitely a simple story with not too much thinking needed but a good story to read when you need a break from your other stories.

Easy, light and fast read. Nothing serious. Very little back story, plot doesn't seem to exist at first BUT does develop later in the novel with random points throughout. A lot of plot twists at the end that kinda came out of nowhere.

The main character is very naive, borderline s*upid. In fact, I really disliked it at first, considering whether I should drop it. What kept me going is the comedic undertone and slowly developing plotline. And it was easy read, didn't take long to get to the end.

Anyway, ... more>> definitely think 5 stars is over-praise... it was ok, but Im not gonna recommend it or consider rereading. <<less

For those not familiar with China, this work is a send-up of Qing dynasty imperial court drama. It has adorable characters, fluffy smutty story, fun setting, and hilarious tongue-in-cheek narration. I didn't like the manhua adaptation because it did away with all the satire in exchange for admiring its own beauty, but the novel's mix is just right. 5 stars!

4 stars: This story is a meringue, or sponge cake, or cotton candy, or any other fluffy sweet dessert you can think of. It's light and comedic and committed to being unserious, though a bit sparse and confusing on things like physical description and setting, and therefore with very unclear world building. I thought it was an ancient-times beastfolk story at first until a scene where the shou MC takes a photo with a girl, and then I thought okay, I guess it's modern-times beastfolk albeit in a country that... more>> still has a king that accepts people as tributes, until later it talks about the previous king being lazy and attending meetings via holographic projections and then I was like... okay, so it's sort of semi-futuristic... ? Though ultimately, the story ended up being pretty much modern-times despite a couple of weird random technological mentions like the previous.

Yet the kingdom itself is also strange, because it's ruled by a king who oversees the government and approves memorials like some kind of emperor and has a state-approved harem whose members are entered into a database and rewards and titles can be updated via computer, but there's also a "Censorate" that oversees other government stuff and is capable of impeaching the king and apparently removing him. The harem appears to be staffed by "neutered" animals AKA eunuchs. But also there is a Son of Heaven dragon-beastman who sort of rules over the beastman-kings of the other countries?

Most of the time for the first large chunk of the novel, the story is indistinguishable from an ancient setting... until random background details are tossed in every few chapters like the concubines calling for the AI-controlled sedan chairs using their smartphones.

Additionally, it wasn't until many chapters into the story that it was suddenly casually mentioned that there are in fact humans in this world too, and that the assorted beastmen/beast demons are... sort of magical but not uncommon? But then it's weird because there are definitely human females, but as far as I recall, no female beastfolk are ever mentioned in the story, and mpreg seems contradictorily both normal and unusual. The members of the king's harem are all males, which does not appear to be unusual, and all beastfolk pairings in the story whether featured or background, romantic or s*xual, are exclusively male x male pairings.

All that world-building (or lack thereof) aside, the story was casual and light enough for the weirdness to only seem a bit strange without being off-putting.

The comedy is as expected from the pairing of leisurely opaque doting gong x very naïve/innocent physically strong s*upid shou, and the lack of detailed description sometimes plays quite well into that comedy, particularly during the PG-13/R-18 parts.

Spoiler

Such as when the wolf gong gives the ignorant snow leopoard shou a hand with, ahem, you know, and then is like, "Can you repay the favor?" and the shou is like, "Of course, my lord!" and tries his best with his hands and the gong is like, "UMMM, claws are not necessary, " and the shou is like, "Oh, uh, sorry, my lord!" and the gong is like, "Nono, it's fine, I'm fine, let's just stop here for tonight, " and leaves.

[collapse]

Note though that after an initial heavy emphasis on such scenes, they disappear almost entirely and become once-in-a-while fade-to-black one-liners as the focus shifts to the gong and shou basically being cute and cuddly together and not much else. Which I didn't mind, considering how the story stayed fluff and comedy the whole way through.

Beyond the innocently bumbling shou and the aloofly suggestive but sweet gong getting to know each other and dealing with (of course) some typical palace/harem intrigue, the story does suddenly develop a different plot halfway through, turning into an investigation/undercover story that remains light fluff and comedy. I admit though I was increasingly waiting for some kind of A-HAH moment connecting all the disparate details and clues since I was never exactly sure where things where heading but that moment never quite came—and that's even allowing that there was a whole scene of blow-by-blow exposition by a couple of characters during the climax of the arc and boy did I not realize how xxx that sounded until I typed it LOL.

Ahem. Anyway, what I mean is that the Big Reveal of What Was Really Going On came across as more needlessly complicated than surprising or satisfying. It's one of those stories where the not-very-surprising villain has this grand master plan that's predicated on really weird and specific details and is so overly twisty that you end up more surprised such a s*upidly complicated plan almost worked rather than being impressed by its supposed complexity.

Then for the last bit of story there's a shorter sort of third arc that was also a bit weird plotwise as it again involved weirdly complicated s*upid schemes and was yet again a victim of unclear world-building since it kept Revealing Things that should have been established as basics of the setting long ago, as well as making random background characters into sudden villains but because descriptions were so sparse, I wasn't even sure said characters actually were villains literally until they received their comeuppance.

I guess my beef with the assorted nefarious schemes, mystery, and investigation stuff is that all the reveals are of things that I, as a reader, could not possibly have known or even guessed because there was no real setup or hints and much of the revealing information was totally out of left field. It's a bit like if, oh, at the end of Cinderella, the prince reveals, "Actually, I knew this slipper was yours all along because my family has been secretly watching over you all these years and genetically engineered your mice and sent them to you to befriend you, as my father had promised your father on his deathbed to look after you but we couldn't be open about it since we're the royal family and we couldn't look like we were favoring you, so I came up with a plan to commission these glass slippers and a fancy dress and send my half-sister disguised as your 'fairy godmother' to give them to you, and she used a pheromone-spray concealed in the tip of her 'magic wand' to activate the genetically manipulated mutations in the mice to turn them into horses and did the same with the genetically engineered pumpkin to turn it into a coach, all so that you could come to the ball in order for me to 'fall in love with the mysterious girl' so that I could spin the romance angle in order to marry you despite your modest background."

And you're just like, "... wtf did I just read? Why did such a simple story suddenly become so retroactively complicated?"

This novel's second and third arcs are like that, though perhaps a bit less exaggerated. However, despite how weird it was, I still enjoyed the novel overall because it didn't ever let itself get bogged down in anything dark, serious, or angsty, and never, ever took itself too seriously. It reads quite quickly and is pretty fun, so it's worth a read if you're in the mood for something light and amusing. <<less

As of chap 4, it seems like the MC has a naive character and the ML has a straightforward character.

ML kinda takes advantage of MC’s naiveness to like “cook MC in warm water” if that’s how that saying goes.

However, both of them are very aware that they’ll be fcking soon lol

Overall, it seem like it’s a cute novel but it’s not my type so skipping this for now. I won’t be rating this as well.
