It's a good book, I guess? It's easy to read in MTL. I like the MC's stubborn personality. It's also interesting to see how a city worker is like during the 1960s era. The pacing is quite slow but it's a slice of life, alright? Just skip the first frustrating chapters. The romance will enter on the latter half of the story.

Probaby what made me uncomfortable is that the moral principles of the characters doesn't agree with me... ... more>>
Spoiler

there was a time when the MC's frustrating relative was "raped" and was left in the woods naked to be seen by the authorities. Although that relative also has some bad motives, that doesn't change the fact that this kind of revenge/ lesson is still nasty. Anyway, the one who did it is not the MC--it's the brother of the MC's partner. The MC also lashed out to her parter who knew something about what his brother is planning and yet, still allowed that to happen. They reconciled because she just accepted that their bottomlines are different, which is OK. But that still doesn't sit with me... I don't know, I just really feel uncomfortable.

Pros:

  • The story is better written and more creative than other similar '60s stories written in 2017.
  • The summary does a disservice to the story; the story is much better than the impression you get from the summary.
  • It doesn't take long for MC to free herself of her biased grandparents and neglectful parents. I really like MC's decisiveness.
Cons (for me) :

  • If you've read other '60s novels written in 2020 and later, the story will feel like you're going down a checklist (biased grandparents that will get their just desserts, parents that treat their daughters like disposable tissue, MC learning from intellectuals that have been sent to rural areas, MC getting ahead by selling good that are rare in that time period, but not rare in modern-day, collecting antiques for dirt cheap prices, etc).
  • I like the ML's friendly, playful brother that she meets first, and I was rooting for him until
    Spoiler

he does something terrible late in the story

    [collapse]
. Compared to his brother, ML is a bland, cookie cutter love interest. He's good on paper for a dodder flower heroine, but the author has spent the first half of the story showing that MC is clever, capable, strong-willed, and independent. I tried reading a few chapters after he and MC got together, but it was like eating stale bread, and I dropped the story.
  • Around that time in the story, MC has gotten super rich by collecting antiques and selling it on her Taobao account. There's no challenge left on the financial side. Its just drama and troubles from MC and ML's many extended relatives. I can't even bother keeping track of their names.
One thing I found odd is MC's reaction to OO's parents and youngest sibling in the last quarter of the novel. For context, OO has two younger siblings. MC took away the sibling that she was closest with when she separated from her family. MC has firsthand experience that OO's parents are very neglectful towards their daughters. Even if their daughters are starving and begging them for food, the parents will come up with a reason to justify why they're going to give food to their well-fed nephews and nieces. At one point, she socially shames them in front of their coworkers for it, but they just go back to their old habits when she goes away on her regular business trips. And so, it doesn't make sense for MC to have a surprise pickachu face reaction when she notices that her parents are neglecting their youngest daughter for the nth time.

I'm neutral about whether MC should help out that youngest sibling. On one hand, by this time in the story, MC has ridiculous amounts of money and contacts. She's at the point in her life where she's successful enough that she's can help with China's technological advancement. It would take minimal effort on her part to ensure that her youngest sibling reach adulthood without long-term starvation and malnutrition. But, is that too much to ask MC to help her out just because this girl is OO's youngest sibling? I don't know.

Regardless, its not enjoyable to watch the preventable tragedy slowly unfold to an innocent minor. There are so many warning signs of what will happen. It doesn't help that MC spends more time judging her parents for being bad parents than helping her youngest sister. I'm confused where the author was going there.

this story it's a Jewell!

The ML is mature and very manly, the MC is really interesting and independent woman, their chemistry it's just perfect!

Her family is very evil, but she found people who help her a lot.

The translation was a bit bad, but it's understandable because the person it's not a pro in tl, but did a good job till ch89. the rest of the chapters were MTL, but it wasn't that bad either.

I kind of pity her father, but well...

Her mother ugh it's the worst.

Spoiler

There should've been more story that takes place outside of the 60s. It would have been less suspicious when using Taobao and a lot of crazy scenarios could've happened.

[collapse]

The drama brought up by family members was also overused to hell, rinse and repeat as Nannan became more successful.

I wished there was more involvement with the system. Nannan could have done so much with Taobao, such as exploiting future events for money, but she only focused on antiques, which was so risky. <<less

I feel pretty similarly to the other people here. Pretty enjoyable novel, easy to MTL. The MC is actually pretty likeable. The plot isn't outlandish, the faceslapping is satisfying (besides some characters being like way too committed to being insufferable). The concept is good too. The authors does a good job tying the writing into historical events. I definitely enjoyed this novel quite a bit. Things to not like: (major plot spoilers will be spoilered in this section, so feel free to check this if you're wondering about cons in... more>> the novel)

Spoiler

-ML is like 27 and is gunning for a 17 year old. I get the generational thing but that's just... creepy. Especially his early advances were basically stalking and too much physical contact. He ends up being a wife s*ave but still

[collapse]

- (The below spoiler is the part other people complained about)
Spoiler

There's the whole subplot where MC's sister "gets played hooligan". Basically, ML's brother sets up the sister to meet in the woods for a romantic rendezvous. It is kind of unclear what exactly happened in the MTL, but either the sister intentionally stripped before hand because she wanted to honey trap him, or is stripped by the lackey of the brother who eventually shows up to the fake rendezvous. The brother did this because the sister was trying to force him to marry by staking her reputation and accusing him as a hooligan, but this response was super overblown and the brother is at least 50% at fault for being a flirty playboy to begin with. ML covers it up for the brother politically and doesn't tell MC until after the fact and she just.... accepts it after

Spoiler

Spoiler

finding out that this kind of trick was pulled on someone close to him before and they committed su*cide That person is (big spoiler)

Spoiler

Professor He's student/family, and Professor He getting revenge on the female student who caused the su*cide was the reason for his political extradition. (Major spoiler)

Spoiler

Spoiler

Professor He is ML's adoptive Dad so he took it very personally Anyway, she just kinda hears about the circumstances and accepts that people have different moral standards but it's like... if your standards are incompatible that's a red flag. She justifies this by saying that ML would be good to her always so it's fine...

[collapse]

Spoiler

-The nationalism/xenophobia is there, and it makes sense for the time period, but it's a bit wack

-Randomly, MC starts believing in wack folk customs that are non-scientific and harmful with regards to childcare, education, and some other things. Just fully giving into the traditional mindset which was 100% proven to be detrimental over time in multiple places in the story feels really strange

[collapse]

Spoiler

-Unfortunately, like almost every Chinese novel, the misogynism is kinda high. Even if you read a CN novel with no men, there's probably unhealthy traditional gender roles and stereotypes being enforced. In this case, I would say for a Chinese novel, this female MC is pretty enlightened. She considers a low-medium level of chauvanism as acceptable but to be honest with you it kind of disgusts me. It just makes the relationship feel a lot less sincere. I mean, this is just a cultural difference between China and the West. As much as she strives to be a powerful female, she ends up having the ML solve many of her problems and defers to him more than she needs to. She also just kinda lets ML do whatever he wants sometimes even when it's just him lacking trust in her or trying to "protect" her even when it totally backfires. I literally laughed when ML just straight up pulled a gun on somebody for leering at MC and had 0 consequences for doing so

[collapse]

-MC literally has so much power/ability with Taobao and doesn't really use it to the fullest. She doesn't use birthcontrol or medicines or lots of other stuff. She realizes halfway through the novel she could get a better education with modern books from Taobao and only barely uses it. It felt like the author kinda just forgot about the Taobao plotline at some point when it would have been more fun to develop it more

[collapse]

-Obviously it's a time period novel and the MC gets pretty swept up in some of the cultural virtues at the time that are absolutely messed up when considering in a modern sense, which makes sense in some ways because she only spent 20 years alive before heading to the 60s, but it sometimes feels like her whole personality changed. I'm not sure a modern person could truly regress this much, especially when she can contract people from the 21st century with her Taobao chatting

[collapse]

-I would agree that MC could have more easily brought her youngest sister along to share the blessings earlier, but she also kinda just respected her will because the youngest sister was more attached to her parents. To be honest with you, considering all the animosity, she definitely could have extradited her, though it may have been difficult to get the Xu family to agree with signing off on it

[collapse]

Best character might be Old Antiques on Taobao, truly the homie

[collapse]

I genuinely enjoyed the ending. There are literally 30+ bonus chapters, so even though there was a time skip, the bonus chapters covered almost everything I was thinking about. I do wonder what happened with the Yu elders, as they never mentioned what happened to them in the end. I assume they went back to the hometown and passed away at some point

[collapse]

Thank you for reading my very long review if you have. Also, thank you to the translator for translating the early chapters. I 100% recommend starting with those as the family situation is hella complicated and reading it in properly translated English will make reading the MTL to finish the novel 100x easier/ <<less

The first 70 chapters are either good or excellent, except maybe the villains are boring, dumb, grey. But then the author decided to make the FL meet the ML while the FL was kidnapped to be r*ped while one of the FL's roomates (another sinister villain in the making who specializes in moral kidnapping) observed, and it got way too nasty and not interesting. So, do not read it if you are looking for an epic love story between a factory worker and a soldier in cruel times of Cultural... more>> Revolution. It's a novel about a hard working girl who wants and appreciates family love more than a couple's love.

The writing of this story is simply excellent and the historical period of the mid-1960s is well portrayed. Great insights into psychology of people of that era as well, especially of the FL's seemingly (or actually) evil biological father who discarded and destroyed his own offspring and instead raised four of his nieces and nephews as his own. All due to being filial to his mom, the s*upid old granny! Like literally, that family's brothers swapped the kids. I have never imagined such a thing being possible. Only in China I guess... That was a novelty to me, to see the world through his innocent eyes as he was doing evil and served evil and saw no evil in it.

I also loved the fantasy elements in it (the Taobao store that preserves treasures of the past by sending them directly to the future before the Cultural revolution craze of 1966-1976 will destroy China's cultural heritage, its antiques, its precious calligraphy scrolls and ancient manuscripts, paintings, bronze, china, furniture etc.) and how the FL who was an orphan in this life and is rejected by her entire family after transmigration into the past, essentially, orphaned again, creates a family for herself and her little sister and a beatutiful circle of genuinely good people who support her and love her.

The FL does not just survive or excel at work, she saves people, like her little sister, professor He, the Yu couple, helps feed the entire staff of 1000 workers at the iron ore mine during famine, etc. But she does not save the OG's littlest sister

Spoiler

There are three sisters, the FL transmigrates into the body of the oldest who died from starvation and overwork at the age of 15, collapsed while doing field work to earn work points. She and the middle sis are abused to death together, orphaned, their father and his side formally, in writing, rejected them as their family's kids but he kept the youngest girl as his one remaining biological daughter and that did her a lot of damage.

Why didn't the FL save her? Should we judge her, since she is a capable adult person, her real age 5-7 years older than the OG? I do not know. We see how she reaches for that little girl practically since chapter one throughout the novel, helping her, feeding her, asking her if she wanted to leave their parents and live with her and the middle sister, but that baby has faith in her biological parents, she refuses. She also asked the father to let her raise her starving youngest little sister, not once but twice, on two separate occasions, he silently refused, said nothing both times. That and the fact that the FL is not really her sister, she is a transmigree, so the urge to interfere or intervene or the attractiveness of the befefits from it was not as strong I guess.

So, from those three sisters doomed to be starved to death by their parents and their father's relatives only two survived in the end - the middle sister and the youngest. The oldest perished and her body was taken over by the FL's soul with her Taobao store in her private (mind) space. The FL eventually became a venture capitalist, the middle sis - a scientist, the youngest was more than a little crooked, cruel and bad as a child, a Hóng Wèibīng who kicked and stepped on the body of her elementary school teacher along with other Red Guards, never went even to middle school, because all schools were closed in 1966 and 1967 in all China, but eventually became a factory owner, the FL provided the initial capital for that.

Their parents divorced, their mother after ten years of imprisonment in Tibet ended her life alone in that dilapidated little hut next to the pig stables where two of her orphaned daughters escaped in the beginning of the story.

The girl's father ended up alone in the mining town, taking care of his ex-wife's parents. He made his amends with his eldest daughter (well, the FL) somewhat, he stood up for her during her arrest by the Red Guards but he never learned that his real eldest daughter was long dead thanks to his "care".

[collapse]

This novel is not as light and positive as this author's other work about the same period (Almighty Military Wife), although it has a HE. There are very few cute or funny moments in it. It is more about winning in life, about complex families in complex times, the good winning over evil, and the glory of China as a high tech society with luminous past, its ancient culture well preserved and passed on, but it is better written.

Many thanks to Alyssa for translating it! <<less

I liked it a lot at first, thought there was a lot pf potential, but once she meets ML it got bland. I can’t handle the story any more, it’s a little too much how easily things come to her and how the conflict is always the same old. How the side characters seem totally unimportant and it feels like the world the author created just revolves around MC, the characters are 2D and super predictable, unlike real people who should be a little diverse. Woman got transmigrated to the past, became a little girl. Also has a taobao. She can buy stuff and sell. Has a father, mother and two other little sisters. Her and the second child was brought to their grandparents. She went to the Iron mine to work with her little sister. Blah blah blah blah. She yearns for a daughter but got 4 sons instead. 1st and 2nd sons are twins. She gave birth to the fourth child when she is almost 50. Blah blah blah. Also she is the one who first started the project of space and time. Coincidentally the scientist used Taobao as a startup. Also coincidentally due to some error it was s**ked in a distortion never to be found again. More coincidentally the scientist used some of the genes of the MC for the equipment to have a higher compatibility with it. You now know where that equipment have gone.

I think for me this novel was good. Also the ending was good too. The first novel that I read that has an ending that made me satisfied. (Well some novels are still not completed, unfinished, on hiatus or I gaved up halfway).

Although its kinda annoying how evil her relatives are and always pops out everytime. Well it is better than those other novels that has villain who shows up, annoys the MC, MC coincidentally gets power boost, bad guy gets killed, then another one shows up much stronger and repeat and rinse.

Well no one dies, except those guys who made trouble on Nianjian, well they got executed. Anyway no one got killed. Only died of old age.

Not a full 5 stars but close. At the start there were parts of the story that was cringey and made you go -.- but once you're numbed to the blind filial duty that was so huge in Asian culture and the absolutely unreasonable logic that all the antagonists had, the story, though cliche, was an enjoyable read for me. It took a few scenes but I did manage to guess that twist around her system before the reveal. So if you're not 100% inoculated against unreasonable dog blood drama,... more>> this is a fine story to read. If you've vaccinated, this story is gonna start rough but end with basically no loose ends. <<less
