Shin is an assistant director on the popular variety show “Go Go Dash.” He additionally gets placed on a nightly news program produced at the same network and gets to know the sports news anchor, Minagawa Tatsuki. Tatsuki is loud, popular, and has a bold look in his eyes—the type of guy that Shin typically has a hard time getting along with, but for some reason, Shin can’t seem to take his eyes off Tatsuki when he talks, always so vibrant and full of life. Shin has always been happy just working on “GoGo,” the show that he has always loved, with the producer, Sakae, whom he has admired and idolized; however, Tatsuki keeps closing the distance between him and Shin…

Volume 1: Side Profiles and Irises
Volume 2: Love Rivals and Irises
Volume 3: Block It Out

Note: The Side Profiles series features one couple and the Block It series features a second couple. This set of spinoffs takes place after volume 3 of the main series, “Yes, No, or Maybe Half?” It is recommended that you read the main series first, but it is not strictly necessary.

Disclaimer: I'm the translator for the spinoff series and the main series, and I recommend reading up to volume 3 of the main series before reading the spinoffs.

The thing with Ichiho Michi novels, she never pulls punches when it comes to her characters. You watch the characters hurt and deal with the pain, the fallout, and your heart just aches for them. They are so human in their vulnerability, and yet somehow they find the strength within themselves to move on, to grow, to triumph—to find happiness. This is what... more>> gives me joy in reading her novels, and this spinoff series is no different.

The Side Profiles series centers around Nawada "Nacchan" Shin and Minagawa Tatsuki. It is mainly Shin's story and how he steps out from under the shadow of the producer that he idolizes in order to find love and grow as a director in his own right. Tatsuki is the catalyst that allows Shin to start coming out of his shell, and their interactions are incredibly lovely and sweet once Shin warms up to Tatsuki and sees that Tatsuki is more than who he appears to be. It's wonderful watching the two of them slowly get to know one another, develop a warm chemistry together, and be there to support each other through the good times and the tough. Fans of Tatsuki from the main series will only fall in love with him more in the spinoffs.

Ushio and Kei from the main series make several brief cameos in the spinoffs and they are not to be missed! Just like how Tatsuki can steal the spotlight in the main series, Kei pays him back in full in the spinoffs. It is a delight whenever Kei appears.

Spoilers for who the couple is in the Block It series:

Spoiler

The Block It series centers around Souma Sakae and Shitara Sousuke. It deals with the aftermath of the events in Side Profiles and delves into the history between Sakae and Shitara and how they first met 10+ years ago. The Block It series is a lot more somber than Side Profiles and Yes/No. It is a story of past betrayal, pain, and redemption. Of separation, healing, and devotion. Of a broken genius of a TV director/producer and the long, patient dedication of the man who loves him. This one is full of angst, but oh, so worth it.

A fun read. The light novel contains proper character development that is rarely seen in many works. Each character is written with depth (even the supposed antagonist) making them both likeable and relatable.

This novel is one of the rare awesome reads when it comes to Japanese BL. This series stems up from the main novel Yes ka No ka Hanbun ka and the transition from that character (Minagawa Tatsuki) to this series was quite dynamic, starting from being a side character which was then given a well built character development on this series. In the latter part of the series, it is truly jarring how the couples from the other series blended really well and it's fun seeing them interact with the... more>> main CP. A fun read indeed :) <<less
