Sick Beauty [Rebirth]

In his previous life, Ye Yunlan’s appearance was destroyed by a fire. For years, he was misunderstood by the world and his reputation was notorious. Once reborn, he returned to three hundred years ago. He escapes from the fire. This time, his face was healthy, but his roots have been damaged while saving people, breaking his cultivation and leaving him suffering from sickness. But, Ye Yunlan didn’t care. In his previous life, he wandered for a long time, so in this life he just wanted to live a peaceful life. However, he soon discovered that his former Senior Brother who abolished his golden core, his Sect Master who imprisoned him for a hundred years, his Daoist companion who gave him away to the Demon Venerable, those who hated him and disliked him… all of a sudden, they began to treat him nicely and courteously. Not only did they send elixirs and magic weapons but they also sent themselves. Ye Yunlan: This is unnecessary.

Shen Shu can not forget that scene. In the sky full of fire, that person flew over like a white gull, picked him up and protected the young him within his arms. The flames that hit that man’s back and the blood that dripped down his cheeks fell on the tip of his heart, more scorching than the fire. Later, he bowed his head and called that person “Master”, but when the other party frowned and coughed, he couldn’t help holding the pale hand of that person, and forcefully wiping the blood from his lips. Everyone scolded him for falling into the demonic path and betraying his Sect, but he didn’t listen. He just stared at the man as if looking at the moon. Indulged in beauty, trapped by thirst. The newly promoted No. 1 beauty in the cultivation world at the apex of everyone’s heart, something that can only be longed for.

This was really hard to read. I usually don't mind the devastatingly attractive MC trope but this was really really overdone. The side characters had interesting backgrounds but were excessively brainless and I felt like the story itself was just really repetitive. I can usually turn my brain off for jealousy romance face slapping plots but this was honestly more aggravating than satisfying.

I loved this story from Chapter 1 (because it really has all the elements I love, like: rebirth - check, the MC suffering terribly in the past life - check, the MC being sickly - check. The MC being beautiful is another very good thing, and when it turned out to be master-apprentice relationship, I couldn't be happier. So, I started reading it and basically didn't stop until finishing it. Wonderfully satisfying.

It's absolutely totally not harem :) No one of those who mistreated the MC in the previous life has... more>> a chance. Actually, the ML has a hard time as well, taking into account how badly traumatized the MC is by his past. Their way to being together is slow and painful but their interactions are always so sweet and fulfilling.

The MC - the past life really left him deeply wounded. That's true, everyone is eager to be nice to him in this life because he has his beautiful face; but how can he forget the way they treated him in the past life, just because his face was ruined, how can he take it for anything but hypocrisy. The story is not about revenge, though. Some of those people redeem themselves somewhat in this life. Some of them are left with enormous regret. And then there are irredeemable villains who get their due.

It is a sad, beautiful, melancholic story. Many scenes stay in my mind like still pictures. The story of the water ghost was so upsetting; I keep recalling it with frustration and sadness because of how unfair it feels but at the same time I understand that things like that happen, nothing can be done. I had similar feelings when I read the final reveal about the past of the MC and the ML. It really broke my heart how awfully unfair it was. But eventually they have their HE (and that the case when I wouldn't mind lots and lots of sappy extras, maybe the author will write them.)

I'm so happy this story is getting translated, and the translation is beautiful! <<less

I MTLed this novel.

Before you read (warning)

A word of warning that what is missing in this story is a tag for psychological. A lot of the writing deals heavily with depression as well as other dark themes like betrayal, possessiveness (not just from ML but other side characters as well) and I would caution you to be aware of that before starting.

... more>> About the novel (mild spoilers)

The synopsis doesn't accurately describe what this novel is. MC has lived a miserable life of trusting in the wrong people and being betrayed again and again, yet in that life finds someone important to him. In his new life, he has lost his will to live and wishes only to hide from the impending events he knows will come. He accidentally saves the life of a child leading to him taking in a disciple. From then on his new life breaks direction from his previous life and in all the ways he was hurt before, those people who have hurt him will suffer in turn for their deeds in their previous life. However this is not a revenge plot. Novel is about MC hiding from the world and taking care of his disciple until that is no longer possible and he must both face his past and present lives to move on.

About the tone of the novel (mild spoilers and warnings)

The novel is very heavily psychological. Throughout the whole novel is an ever increasing pressure and darkness due to the author really writing mostly on MC and ML and very few to almost none good side characters. Everyone else faces the MC with sinister intentions and their own obsessions and desires. Whether they are obsessed for his external or internal beauty, the story has a dark and malevolent undertone that carries through MC's every encounter. As a reader, I constantly hold my heart in worry for something horrible to happen to the MC after all the horrible stuff he's gone through. That tension lasts almost to the end of the novel and it was so uncomfortable this book that should have taken me a day or two to read stretched to a month because I felt such psychological dread and empathy for MC. In a way the author unmasks the side characters inner mind to us readers but in the process sets up a world in which all the cards are stacked against the MC.

What the author fails at writing is character growth.

Spoiler

The character growth is written in a very muddled manner amidst all these climatic happenings that it loses much of it's power due to the chaos of the situation. The author clearly did not figure out how to write a character transformation and made it into a cathartic moment instead which while beautiful written also takes away the opportunity for the MC and ML to have character growth together. This is a great tragedy of this novel that it failed to deliver that part right near the very end.

[collapse]

About the MC

The MC in a way lives a very cursed life because of his beauty which caused him tragedy in his past and continues to be a problem in his present life. The prevalent tone throughout the novel is his lack of a will to live on. It really triggered me as a reader having myself done my best to support people who were suicidal and or lacked the will to live (those two are not the same). If this might trigger you, I recommend you take care reading it. Despite this, the MC has strength and determination in his actions as well as an apathy to everything that happens around him, because he has given up caring for the most part. I couldn't help but care deeply for the MC for how his life was written. Because of his characterization, it made this novel a very emotional ride and difficult read.

About the ML

The ML has a very tragic past and a love for the MC that really tears me up. Most of his character development is in his growing love for the MC and his cherishing and protecting him in his own way. His singular devotion makes his personality and very soul teeter on the edge of losing it at times if not completely. To the ML, the MC is the oasis to his desert, sometimes illusory, but that last pure land in a dark heart. The author has perfectly captured this feeling in writing.

TL:DR

If you have a sensitivity to emotions, trigger on dark psychological themes like depression and betrayal, take care with reading this novel. I was severely and unexpectedly triggered. If you don't find these subjects triggering, read ahead. It's not a light read and the prose is indeed beautiful. Don't read this for some happy romance. This is a dark novel about losing oneself and at the end finding redemption in self and love. It is a dark and arduous journey that only sees the light at the very end. <<less

This was such a frustrating read. I know that miscommunication and characters making the wrong move is par for the course in order to generate conflict and angst but this one went too far.

  1. The MC keeps holding the idiot ball. There is so much fuss over his beauty you'd think he'd try to disfigure himself on purpose or something to avoid trouble but no. And he keeps serving himself up on a platter to the major antagonist despite knowing the difference in their capabilities from past experience. He doesn't even enlist the help of others. Okay, I guess you love the ML so much you'd rather risk letting yourself and the ML die than ask for help from outsiders.
  2. The major antagonist has too much plot armor. He gives the minor antagonist a famous magic device to frame the MC but after the scheme is exposed, no one questions the origins of the magic device. The MC doesn't even bother to point it out even though he knows. Then the minor antagonist gets super mad at the major antagonist betraying him but still keeps his mouth shut about the major antagonist's role. At that point, I gave up any expectation of a story that makes sense.
  3. The backstories. My god, I do not care for how long they are. I did not need to read about some water ghost's tragic love story for two whole chapters. And the Senior Brother and Sect Master appear too much for how little they actually mattered in the rebirth.

Wow!!! Reading this is such a ride. There is a lot of twist and turns. When you're thinking "what a plot twist!" then after few chapters you'll say "what there is another plot twist!". It really is a SATISFYING READ.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS. It is really well written. Not really your typical rebirth story.

I'll be honest, I was interested in seeing how this would go.

Initially, it was fine, the different happenings s**ked me in. I liked the rebirth aspect and the fact that their was more to him than even his family thought.

However, towards the end I began to feel like I was cheated out of an experience. For one thing, what person would willingly stay where he was the most disrespected? Clearly you knew the type of people that surrounded you in that environment. He lived it once and knew how it... more>> ended. And yet, instead of leaving once you were a little more comfortable, you stay.

Yes he was sick, but he honestly could have taking the ML and left away from the sect and still made it to the different events without problem.

Secondly, I was expecting more into the phoenix lineage, instead, we get more into the ML's obsession than anything.

I was also expecting some character development to take place whether it was for the MC or The ML. Yet both of them end up in the same beauty-and-the-beast, Stockholm syndrome type of relationship.

I'm disappointed.

Particularly, the first 20 chapters after 100, I was honestly expecting a little more than chains and constant f*cking, and yet he still considered himself "in love" with him, and I don't understand how.

I digress, ultimately, the entire last 16 chapter just feel so weird. The serpent guy popped out of nowhere and there wasn't even any lead up aside from the quick snippet of RR talking to a shadow. However, as many times as they reiterated his beauty, his sword, his fragility, his rebirth and so on, you'd think they mentioned the serpent guy at least once just to let you know the possibility of a Last Boss.

Instead, it was just tossed in to make ML seem less villain-y. I'm really let down by this, I had fairly high hopes tbh, but the ending was just what tipped the scale.

3.5 low end. <<less

I use MTL.

It's a very interesting novel. MC's prev life is f*cked up and tragic. This 2nd time around, he is not interested in revenge or anything. He just wants to live quietly. Unfortunately, he is so beautiful that no one is willing to let go of him. Till now, the story is absolute 5 stars.

Abandoned at chapter 68. Reading this novel feels more "enduring" than "entertaining".

At this chapter, there is no information about how or why MC was reborn, though it is obviously not by his own intention. I can't even start to tell you how f*cking annoying MC is with his "i want to die" personality. It makes so no sense. If it were because his "love" died in his previews life, why not die then but hang around another 100 years or so. But now that he has a... more>> chance to change things he is like "naa... let's just die s*upidly". MC is not exactly likeable.

ML is also frustrating. Not telling any truth from start to end. Communication is not happening in this novel. Z e r o!

Also the whole flow sucks... there a flasbacks like every 2 pages. Sometimes so randomly thrown in, it just annoys me. Also, the flashbacks are repeating. I think it would have been better to just write them in one part and that's it. The flashbacks are too long and too much.

There is another thing that bugs me.... to which part did MC rebirth? If it was before the fire accident, why go there unprepared if you know or why go at all? But if it was after the accident then why did history change? Makes no sense and the writer doesn't touch this.... maybe on a later part I did not read? But I really can't stand this any longer.

If you aren't fickle with story holes and Communication issues, you might like this novel. Unfortunately for me this is a no go since the dogblood drama and the 2d brainwashed villains are the only driving point.

Don't think I will pick this up again. <<less

The translation is amazing, they do a great job at translating but keeping terms and idioms true to their source.

The writing is excellent. The world building is really engaging. The characters are actually really well developed and it's very easy to understand them. Unlike most BL, there are female characters who are portrayed in a positive way, they aren't just jealous petty little b*tches, they are strong and regarded as equals to the men in the world.

There's really no one that's just pure evil, everyone has their own motivations and... more>> think they are doing the right thing. Even the people who tortured and betrayed the MC in past life truly believed they were saving the world, and it's easy to see that they aren't evil. Hell, the demon lord doesn't even feel evil. Except the one man who's just a green tea b*tch, you'll figure out who he is really fast.

I'm going to take a break reading this because I think the MC is very frustrating. He's just too obsessed with maintaining his own weakness. I mean, I get it, he's been worn down in his past life and just wants to be left alone... But he has a second chance to be happy and is insisting on making the same mistakes again. In Xianxia settings the only way to be safe and happy is to be strong and the MC is choosing to be weak, like he was in his past life, so he will be taken advantage of, like he was in his past life.

What's the point of being a regressor if you just choose to live an equally (or more) shitty life the second time?

It's frustrating. Hopefully I pick this back up because I really enjoy everything about it except the MC's self-enforced helplessness. <<less

Not like the typical dog blood revenge chinese BL novels where a bunch of crazy psychopaths chase after MC, cause in this one each and every of those flies all have quite distinctive personality and power to go after MC. At first all of them seem like tr*sh, but later in fact some of them turn out to be quite decent,

and

Spoiler

in fact many of those people used to have a chance to be with MC / captured MC's heart in the previous life, but due to several reasons they themselves were the ones who let him go / put him down. So no use crying over spilled milk I guess

[collapse]

and about our ML

Spoiler

He's quite an animated sort of psycho/ villain. As a demon lord, he is ruthless and forceful, but meeting MC really changed his life (he described MC as the only white thing in his dark, dirty world view) at first, like a clumsy child who didnt really know how to take care of his treasure, he tried to keep MC captive, but later he actually sacrificed a lot for MC, and wanted MC to go out, be free, experience more of what life gotta offer. It really touched my heart readin that part because his character development was done really well

[collapse]

In conclusion, A solid 5* cultivation-settin, second-chance BL, where main and sides characters all have personalities, where neither sides are too OP so the plot development is always somethin to look forward to and be fearful about. <<less

3 stars

I was in it for the face slapping, dash of hidden identity and the angst.

It delivered on those tbh but it was quite a challenge to read hence the 3 stars and not a higher rating (so it's good but I can't say I enjoyed it).

Pros: ... more>>
Spoiler

I really enjoyed the main couple (when they were ACTUALLY IN THE SAME SCENE, gosh they kept getting separated). And I actually liked the slight hidden identity aspect of the story. Also for some face slapping but it doesn't seem to really happen as much as I would like. Just thank goodness this isn't a harem book and MC is a firm no to those that kept trying to butter up to him. The angst really delivers in this book, really felt for MC and ML especially in the past life.

[collapse]

Cons:
Spoiler

omg, the flashbacks happen without much warning so like it gets jarring in the middle of the chapter and then suddenly we're back to present time. This happens throughout the book and since the past is SUPER important, one can imagine how many times it happens. My head aches from the processing. Also there's like time skips here and there and I'm just very confused at times be it perspective shift or time jumps. So it's just hard to keep track of the flow of the story that makes it hard to enjoy the story and I-I kind of ended up speed reading (making it harder to know what's happening but I was just getting a tad impatient) towards the second half because I just wanted to know what happened between MC and ML and didn't care about the rest. Also, I know this is called "Sick Beauty" but MC is just a tad too weak with how so many people wants to sleep with him. But then again, he is mortally injured and frail so can't blame him (just frustrating, but he is strong willed, thank goodness).

[collapse]

My confusion (probably due to skipping) :
Spoiler

did ML drop his name at the end? Why was he no longer called Shen Shu towards the end? I probably skipped something very important hahaha. Should probably re-read this once the translation is out.

[collapse]

Overall, the book delivers on the angst but may not recommend on MTL. <<less

man some of these reviewers didn't even bother to finish the whole story before giving it low ratings

In my honest opinion, this novel is really good only thing is you have to complete the story. It somewhat reminded me of erha. The writing style was also good, the flashbacks were written with good pacing. All the tragic things and fate, it was rounded up quite well by the author.
And MC has his badass moments. In a lot of novels, fights are dominated because of OP ML but in this... more>> one the final conflict is solved by MC himself and I loved that. His character is exactly how I imagine people who are reborn to be like. No naive thoughts or back to being the same mentality even after years of trauma. The passage of hundreds of years has certain changes on a person and MC definitely shows that.

This part wasn't explained well and I'm confused about it *MAJOR SPOILERS*
Spoiler

in the past life how did ML forget that he was Ling Er? What happened after the Netherworld realm arc in their last life? Where was ML when MC was fake accused by Rong Ran? We needed more ML's pov from the last life

[collapse]

Overall, it's still a good story. Translation was great. I started the novel when the translations were out upto 12 chapters only and after a long time, I finally found it was finished and I enjoyed reading it. <<less

This is a very well written novel. Due to abuse that MC suffered I want this to be revenge story instead. Probably his faults are being naive and trusting the wrong person.

Also, it is NOT mentioned that it involves r*pe. MC's past with the ML 😅 and I'm uncomfortable by it. Because I hate the hypocrisy of raping a person due to love. Well it's understandable since he's a demonic cultivator. Although they have good and sweet memories on "past" and "the current present", it is not enough to outweigh... more>> the emotional damage the MC experienced.

For the question on the review: ML's name in the past was changed on c64. To be exact it is not changed but he is called by his title.

Will continue reading... not sure. The MC is really damaged and tired emotionally.. Reading this makes me depressed so will halt <<less

Spoiler free: The novel tells the story of Ye Yulan who has been reborn after suffering a terrible life at the hands of various people. Except in his new life, he decides to accept a disciple after seeing his past self in him. I really enjoyed the pacing of this story, and the way everything is tied up well with how the author gradually fills the gaps in the characters' backstories and history. You'll find the novel will jump back and forth between flashbacks, which I really like because it... more>> fleshes out the characters and helps us readers connect with them better. There's just the right amount of angst and fluff given the tragic past of the MC and ML. The translation quality is AMAZING. I wish I could read more novels with this sort of dynamic (MC is a sickly yet strong, beautiful shizun while ML is wholly devoted, kinda yandere disciple). This is my first time writing a review because I think this novel deserves way more recognition than it currently has.

(I want avoid ANY possibility of spoiling if possible because I think part of the enjoyment of reading Sick Beauty Rebirth actually comes from gradually figuring out the situation. So don't uncover the following unless you really want to, it's just a concluding sentence!)

Spoiler

TLDR; this is a bittersweet romance about two very broken people who have come together again, whether it was in their past life or their current life.

The story was intriguing at the beginning. I like a sick MC style plot.

The whole relationship between MC and his pursuers is dope. Still. There are so many plot lines that weren't uncovered. For example, the enmity with an emperial family and whole bloodline thing was introduced as something grand but really haven't been used until the very end just as a filler.

Relationship has an abuse part in it.

I got mixed feelings from this novel, mostly because I think that the ending was bland and rushed.

4.5/5. Sometimes you just want an MC who has suffered tremendously and gets another chance. This is that book. Oh god the feels. Maybe in some fan version of this story, the ML can go back in time and save the MC before he has to go through so much pain in the first place, but also someone to save the ML? I don't know, but I wouldn't recommend starting this if you want an easy read.

It been long time since I left review. I just can say one thing.... I was dumb... Dumb for not reading this sooner. I love the pain and agony that end in good way. I cried a lot around 40 chapters and later on. Ye yunlan were so much in pain but I love how he stayed strong till the end and never cried. I cried in his place thou. I love the demon lord oh god please forgive me but I like that bastard sect master as well. He... more>> deserved what came to him.

All in all If I didn't have so much unread novel in my list I would have definitely tried reading this one again. And not to forget what demon lord said at pagoda :
