Well, I enjoyed reading this.

Aside from basically s*upid luck and opness with blatant convenient self-serving writing, the setting as a whole is great with the subplot being fine as is (if youre already fine with the opness otherwise its kinda left field). Its an obvious power wank but im surprised mars gravity wrote something like this as its clearly much better compared to the heavenly mess of ATG but still has things that are off. Although if you're looking for something well written, theres many more things better. The main... more>> appeal is basically the world and system for me. <<less

Shura's Wrath somehow makes its vrmmorpg aspect unique without sacrificing its real world interactions and instead brings the real world to its full potential. I recommend you try this if you normally read any of the xianxia or wuxia stuff gravity tales puts out. I'm at the latest released chapter and its intense, no better way to put it.

The story is basic... at first then slowly reveals itself more and more, its the stripper of stories. Every chapter shown makes you want more. By the time you get to... more>> chapter 100 you'll be invested, at chapter 200 you'll be howling for more, at chapter 300 you'll be anxiously waiting for the next release. Unless action and adventure centered stories with light romance and comedic elements isn't for you. <<less

It starts out good enough but the latter half more or less kills it for me. The story is entertaining but is held back by the writing and he sheer amount of dues-ex machinas that are pulled out of nowhere

Setting: 3/5

Generic story of VRMMORPG where MC starts off like any other character but obtains a special “class” (special item/trope). This is fine. It’s a standard plot line for a reason, because it works. It’s neither outstanding nor sub par. It’s just average. Scaling is better than some other Chinese novels... more>> but you’ll see the same tropes you’re used to (jade beauty that no one can touch or beauty being forced to marry but they all somehow fall in love with MC). And the actual setting of the world is entertaining. And the power scaling started off okay... he doesn’t go from a no body to a god within the first half (this all falls apart towards the end however as the end seemed rushed).

Characters: 2/5

The side characters are varied but all have the innate need to fall in love with MC even if he hasn’t done anything special. That being said, the personalities of his harem are varied enough (at least the main harem) that I’ll give some credit there. My biggest gripe is Qi Yue and how she was written (more on that later). She’s simply unlikeable throughout the whole story and because of “fate” ends up falling for MC and we are supposed to all of a sudden appreciate her because the author tells us to. Not because the reader comes to that conclusion on their own. Which leads to the next part.

Action: 1/5

As a pretty generic novel, you can expect to see a lot of spamming of skills with almost zero description of the fight. It boils down to: MC fights powerful enemy, spams a bunch of skills and wins fight. Why? Because he’s the MC! There’s no movement or “skill” other than MC being MC. Fights are essentially standing face to face and let’s see who has he more powerful skill. There’s no “3D” feel to fights if you know what I mean. It’s hard to visualize the fights which makes it far less impactful. That being said, once power scaling reaches a certain point, you can’t really have intricate fights with nuanced skills. Still frustrating though because we have a MC who’s background is essentially a perfect killer but instead of seeing those killing skills we just get AoE spam skills as a description. I’d say the only fights that gave me interest were in the beginning at the novice village.

Writing and plot line: 2/5

The amount of dues-ex-machinas in this story is ridiculous. Randomly walk to this area and somehow find a treasure that has been lost for 10, 000 years. Losing a fight, to be saved by another character out of nowhere. A character says one thing internally but down the road we find out the character’s inner monologue is a contrary to the character real self (Qi Yue). Unreliable narrator doesn’t make a good plot device. It’s just frustrating. The plot twist comes because the author says it comes. Not because it has been set up. In addition, this may be a cultural thing but having s*x with a mentally underdeveloped “kid” didn’t really sit right with me. Especially if said kid was being treated as the MCs daughter (like think sub 10 years old mentality).

I realize my review paints the novel in a bad light but I did enjoy it overall. That’s why overall I gave a 3/5 even though the sum of its parts may not truly add up to it. <<less

The novel has an interesting premise: a futuristic earth, an MC with a mysterious background and the widespread of VRMMO. However, I find that the author failed to write a compelling story which blends the three elements that I mentioned earlier. MC is kinda edgy and the things he do are mind-boggling, considering his background and objectives. Not to mention, the plot armours are so shounen-like, you just know it.

The novel is decent up until 380ish chapters then it drops big time (as many mentioned the hate on Japan - racist), but its not just that, it feels like the writing suddenly changed authors - the MC is strong minded with great will suddenly becomes a petty small minded immature pe*vert.

I basically skimmed through the chapters from there on wards and there are some parts where it redeems itself and makes you go "ohhhh right, no wonder" but apart from that its just became meh, maybe I am still... more>> generous with 3 stars but it did provide some enjoyment enough to make you crave for the next chapter - at least up to 380ish chapters. <<less

This series is just so consistently edgy. It’s well done and I like it but there’s just so much consistent pain. What did the main character do to deserve all this?

Everything just seems to go wrong for the poor guy to the point where I struggled to get through it.

I guess this is just a personal thing, but why would I want to read something which just consistently makes me feel awful. I can accept the occasional sad scenes in stories but what I can’t accept is just constant depression.

Anyway,... more>> even if I severely struggled to enjoy it, it was still a good story so 3 stars I guess. <<less

I enjoyed this novel for few chapters. MC have extremely dark and mesterious past. But this novel started go down for me is when writer of this novel started showing his extreme haterad towards japanese and his loathing towards as a nation as a whole through this novel. When MC arrives at Japan he lost his coolheadedness and start doing thingd without thinking like s*xual harassment and raping. This alone shows how much this writer hates Japan and it's denizen. And he is going any length to show his haterad.... more>> That's why this type of novel is not for me where writer shows his haterad, biasness and racism. <<less

I really enjoyed this book.
The book conforms to the "MC loses temporarily, but then breaks through his limits and defeats the bad guy, " and I think now I realize that this trop is so common for a reason. The MC also has justifiable plot armor, but it's not too over the top so there's still a sense of danger in the reader's mind. +1 star
Good story, the world-building is really well done, and there while there are a few info-dumps at the beginning, they weren't annoying.... more>> +1 star
The MC has emotions, but is also cold-blooded when needed. He has a tragic backstory, really strong (but not invincible) power, and also really cares for his loved ones and friends. There is a harem, but the characters are well-fleshed out and don't turn out to be a bunch of side-quests for the MC, I like how the author developed the plot and the girls at the same time. +1 star
The only reason I took a star off was the infamous Japan arc. If you read the other reviews on novelupdates, they all talk about this 50-ish chapter arc. The MC turns unusually cruel and cold-blooded (even for him) and goes on a massacre with a weapon that does 300% pain magnification. Like I get he was angry at being trapped there, but come on author. I just ignored the racism and after the arc ends he goes back to normal.
-1 Star
Well done power scaling, the author has levels do something and the MC is put in a lot of bad situations that he has to solve, and the side effects of skills do something (until he gets too powerful for them to do anything, but at that point, skill side effects are the least of his worries). +1 Star
The MC starts solo-ing everything, and this trend keeps up until the end, but the author throws in some companions that help him out, and I appreciate him not just spamming the same skill to win every fight. For making the MC actually struggle. +1 Star
Spoiler
The story is about unconditional love, betrayal, and redemption, which are all things that made me enjoy this novel (racism excluded). +1 Star
Final Star Count: 4 Stars <<less

Very bad, I don't recommend this to anyone. For reference I liked ATG and was expecting more of the same, very disappointed.

Meaningless stat sheets and weapon flavor text and "holy sh*t this is basically a cheat item!!! it has to be known at this stage in the game everyone else just has ----" again and again. Also up to 100+ chapters is polluted with huge info dumps about sh*t no one cares about.

MC starts out way more op than every other player and goes around picking up the super epic... more>> cheat items and pets. So basically no other player ever matters which isn't very exciting. Its hinted that there's another player who could be as OP as him but before she ever shows up (not yet as of 405) we learn her real world backstory with MC and it seems she is already in love with him.

Despite MC being super OP he and the plot advances through pure luck and coincidence. Lots and lots of super lucky strings of 1/10000000 coincidences that just happen to lead to MC getting exactly what he needs to arrive at the next coincidence. Somewhat based on what actually happens: oh look this special npc appeared its a 1/100000 chance for them to appear, oh they are selling this item and the last monster dropped just enough gold to get it, oh a few chapters latter you trip over treasure in a field that you can't get unless you had that item you bought from that npc, oh that treasure let you go to this place to meet this persons who's uncle sons friends wifes daughter has an inheritance that 1/1000000 people can use... oh luckily one of the harem members can. And using that inheritance...

MC is truly insufferably ret*rded, even though I liked ATG there's a limit to what I can take. The game system and/or the women who follows him around inside of OP item will always say "hey look over there, don't go over there or you die" so he has to go there or he isn't him anymore. Then "oh sh*t what???" there is some super op end game boss he has no chance to win against and so he unleashes plot armor. Here's an example of how this plays out

Spoiler

It just happens to be the one day a year the impossible to defeat boss goes to a meeting, its pure luck, MC had no idea ahead of time. He thinks it will be back soon but insists on hanging around to finish a quest. He saves some bird who turns out to be a girl who starts to follow him around. The boss returns and girl launches a su*cide attack to save MC. Luckily she can be saved by turning into an op bird pet. Sadly this bird pet will launch another su*cide attack to save MC when MC goes decides to wander into the next sure death area. Even though MC would just revive she can't bear to see him lose any progress he worked so hard for. Indeed... all that hard work going to waste would be tragic, his training arc prior to this was having a picnic with his harem while the op bird pet and his other op pet killed monsters for them. MC is devastated by the pets sacrifice, luckily she wont die for another two months, he just has to go find a particular god of the game world and get them to commit su*cide to save her. After knowing this MC becomes totally relaxed.

[collapse]

More ret*rdation:

  1. MC says he wants his alias to be famous in this world, the game is always making announcements to everyone about how amazing the MC is and he never uses anonymous options. But then he nonsensically decides it would be too flashy if he levels up as fast as he easily could. After unleashing his powerful mind to solve this problem he trains half as long as everyone else at half of his max speed. I'll just spell it out that he could have trained at his full speed a quarter of the time as everyone else.
  2. MC needs some money. He goes to get a loan from a powerful npc. He saved that npc's son from certain death and so the npc likes the MC a lot. The npc drives a hard bargain though. After going back and forth a bit the MC agrees to repay him twice as much in three days.
  3. Spoiler

MC is boringly OP in the game but at least he is weaker in the real world right? Well a bunch of people warn him that he and his sister are getting tracked down in the real world. There's also a pretty clear way that they can get tracked down despite using a mask in the game. MC always just smirks at this and ignores it, going on living openly because his enemies better hope they don't find him in the real world. Well they do find him and he isn't happy with the result... afterwards he goes to attack his enemies and try to commit su*cide. Of course he doesn't actually die... after getting away he goes into hiding.

    [collapse]
  4. MC is about to go to japan region and its looking like its going to be some real cringe.
  5. harem member sends message: "I used a technique for you MC ignoring my master who warned me not to do it again so soon because its so dangerous and I have some information to help you now blah blah blah". MC: *uses information without bothering to reply*

This is truely a typical chinese novel, with repetitive plot, non-existent side character and s*upid decision making MC. However just like TMW, ATG, TWE, or any other cultivate novel out there, there is a certain charm to Sura' Wrath. I finished the novel partly because of my appreciation for the translator and partly because of that mysterious charm. Just keep those in mind when you read Sura's Wrath and (propably) you will feel much more comfortable when you came across those "downsides". Have a good read everyone.

There's a few things I'm not super fond of. Early chapters have a very snarky translator making fun of stuff 3 to 5 times a chapter. There's criticism about racism and sexism. The MC isn't a good person. If you require a role model in your novels, look elsewhere. But there's clearly r*pe tags. You should already know what you're getting into. The non-vr world isn't well defined so when plot twists outside of vr happen it can feel random and jarring. I dont feel like Mars leverages the litrpg... more>> leveling experience well. All in all, it feels very rough compared to his cultivation novel ATG. Definitely wouldn't recommend as a first CN WN.

At its heart, this is a story about a broken young man being healed by lolis. Enjoy your read. <<less

Personally, I think this is the best of all novels out there, it has almost all elements that makes the novel fun to read, drama tragedy harem ecchi opMC strong to stronger game vrmmorpg gods cultivation xuanhuan and all sorts of things. Those who thinks this novel is bad are just those with unique tastes, so those with unique tastes doesn't need to read this "fun" to read novel. No fetishes, no r*pe, no depression (maybe a little tiny bit), no self-harm, no orgy, such and so on. Only going to give four stars as it kept me entertained enough to read through the end.

I like the concept and background of where VR meets IRL in some form. The last half feels rushed to me. All this slow built up to OP land, then what? Though, I feel it lost a lot of its "bring IRL skills into VRPG" in the later potions, where it turns into skill this, and skill that.

Spoiler

Could care less for the goddess rpe scene. Also, I know it was mentioned before about his love life, but ffs, the later part of the novel turned into a fkfest. Would also have seen some more interaction between worlds knowing that it wasn't just some game setting.

Was going to rate 3 out of 5 based on the last half and the weakish ending, but compared to some others, I can work with it. <<less

Truly fitting Mars gravity's style, so if you liked his others work (ATG, Evil dragon) you will surely like this one.

Pretty much it's an OP MC, face slapping everything in his paths while collecting a bunch of women along the way, nothing too deep at the same nor shallow.

Also the suspense is pretty good.

Impeccable translations with an outstanding writing style.

Ling Chen is quite possibly your typically "I worked hard to be here, so now I'll take over the world!" kind of character. Don't get me wrong, this is amazing. The harem is a little not so believable, but EVERYONE has their uses in this novel up until the current point, should their name be described. Although it's a VR game (?!) novel, so sometimes you'll see them killed right away with an eventual return.

I've even read the machine translations, because I thought the part after the middle chapters would be good. I mean the first half is great in my opinion, but when I read up to the ending, the last few arcs are just, bad. It feels forced all of the sudden, the concept at the end would have been more acceptable if only it wasn't rushed. As I was getting closer and closer to the end my opinion of the novel just went lower and lower.

Overall, the beginning was great, the... more>> middle was good, while the rest of it just fell off and flopped like a fish.

I would have given it a five if only the whole story and the characters were consistent.

(except the girls in his harem, I think it would be better if they had even a little bit more character development.)

To me this novel was great in terms of keeping the tension, just the hype of the MC slaughtering them (in figurative and literal ways) is what made be read through all the chapters and even 200 or so machine translated ones. It was just, the ending, yes, the damned ending. <<less

I generally like RPG and Gaming genre as a gamer myself.

I find this novel extremely fun to read if you like gaming and its developments. It has a good and solid story in it that will make you read more and wait for the daily chapter.

The MC is as OP in real life as he is in the VR realm.
