In the far reaches of the dark and frozen universe, nine enormous dragon corpses were tied with an ancient bronze coffin. It seems that they were set there since the birth of the universe. Such astonishing scene was captured by a space probe floating in the outer space.

Nine dragons and the mysterious bronze coffin made people wonder that whether they came back to ancient times or just reached the other shore of the universe. A giant mythical world was unfolded, where immortality gradually appeared and paranormal events continuously occurred.

Countless people started to find their own tracks (The Dao) in such mythical realm. Their passion was like turbulent ocean wave which would never cease. The heat in their blood was like erupting volcanoes. Their desire for power and immortality dragged them down to the chasm without knowing it.

Thirty-three classmates held a reunion after graduating. Their friendship was tested, as the bronze coffin took them away from earth and arrived in another unknown planet. The desire for living forced them to follow the path of the ancient gods. Entering a new world of cultivation, will any of them reach immortality, or will they all die along the way?

One of my favorite novels, it just to awesome to read about normal humans from earth that somehow found a treasure and were s**ked in and traveled to another world, its amazing reading a novel that truly starts from scratch, reading about our heroes journey to immortality when they were just like us on earth, truly fulfilling, only downside is the slow start, the prologue is about 60 chapters or so, for our 30 or so protagonist is truly hell.

While the beginning might be good, with mysteriousness that might lead to something later on, the rest of the novel (up to c207 at least) does not deliver.

Actually, it seems to me like the best part of the story so far is up to when the MC starts cultivation. Everything that seems interesting til that point (the mystery of the coffin and the nine dragon corpses, how there is a path to the stars from earth and who made them, how Earth fables and legends seem to be actually present... more>> but in other worlds) are completely thrown away and are replaced with the usual xianxia tropes : MC's physique is unique and is considered as tr*sh by present-day cultivators, MC finds a way to go around it, gains mysterious treasure while at it which causes him to be chased down, etc etc. There are a LOT of chases, also a lot of the usual how dare you fight against our prestigious family etc etc. Aside from the content, the writing style seems to be a lot more incohesive compared to others that I've read. It frequently jumps around from one person speaking to a 3rd person summary style paragraph of what else he's about to say. Quite a bit of scene jumps with little to no transition, sudden decisions by the MC that makes seemingly little sense except to move the plot forcefully to where the author wants to go. Not a lot of finesse.

I'm so disappointed by this novel because Shrouding the Heavens was supposed to be Chen Dong's most representative work, and he's supposed to be one of the great figures in the Chinese web novel world. This novel can in no way compare to the works of IET, TJSS or the other greats in my opinion. His other novel, Perfect World, is much better IMO (even if it's rated lower here in NU). It has a better progression of the story, the MC is much more likeable (although the eat the beast thing-gag becomes WAAAAY too overused). <<less

I have read a lot of novels, and I mean A LOT; trust me, if you like novels like ISSTH - which requires some intelligence to understand, you'll love this, it has the mysterious and intelligent world building and after reading up to CH.40 I can proudly say I found a rare gem, give it a chance, the summary is quite vague but don't let that dictate whether you actually read it or not, I ll give a brief summary - the MC basically goes to this class reunion, they... more>> decide to go on a trip to Mount Tai, this relates to the prologue which basically explains the Dragon and Bronze Coffin, the Dragons basically pull the coffin - it is extremely large 30 classmates fitted in here. After this is where I found it truly unique and interesting, a lot of explanations and character building and then the good parts, they have been transferred to a different world of some sort due to the coffin, the first world is the remains of some Buddhist temple, where Buddha sealed some demons, there's some action, the class mates find some ancient relics which help them survive, the MC is a realistic in a sense, he isn't merciful but he isnt cold blooded, it gives a sense of a generic guy, this is what stuck out to me out of the countless novels I've read, all actions actually seem to have a purpose, he isn't all muscles no brain his character is actually portrayed in a splendid manner, so I urge you to read the novel and then decide on your opinion, don't decide based on just the lack lustre summary, a solid 4.5/5 for me. <<less

Similar to ISSTH only without so much nonsense and the MC is quite clever, he doesn't solve everything with force. Yes cultivation starts late but I don't see how that's relevant when you have action and a nice story before it. I love it how some typical cliches are nullified, for example
Spoiler

MC wants to leave a certain safe house, however he notices those idiots who wish to kill him spying on him so he simply doesn't leave

This novel is infuriating.
Spoiler

As a big Chen Dong fan and seeing how well this book has sold in China, I was naturally excited. Boy was I wronge. It started of very interesting, with round characters. Later on it turned a little cliche, but I was fine with it. Now I just can't continue reading this. While I'm fine with spoiled young masters, this book takes it to a new level. Everyone the protagonist meets has it out for him and when he beats them up they go get their senior brother. This just keeps repeating, without end. There is no logical reason they're after him, but just for someone the Protagonist can beat up. It's so infuriating seeing a gem turn into dust.

AMAZING STORY, everyone is saying it is slow but for me it is just the right pace for a solid world building and a clear personality for the characters, plus they just grow on you... the MC has a decisive personality from the get go and a no-bullsh*t policy that I just love

c38 starts the cultivation but before that you get a fantastic sci-fi story that is so good and interesting, you wouldn't mind if it continued that way (a pity it didn't, was getting really into the crocodile progenitor [a f*cking awesome gator])

This novel was a hidden gem for me considering I was stuck in a slump with nothing to read when I happened to find it. This is one of the few I can honestly say I don't have a clue in where it's going... I mean it started off with a group getting abducted by a coffin, yeah that's f**king awesome.

This is a group survival story in the earlier chapters that transitions to a cultivation story a little slower than some would like, I would like to advise some of... more>> the less patient readers to give it some time and it'll reward you with an immersive story that that shows the potential to be massive in scope and it even gives you something which xianxia are lacking; a main character that is decisive and gives a sh*t about others that aren't ALL girls or family members (they take that sh*t to seriously in china... and they keep losing their faces:) or even the occasional fat friend (cause they ran out of skinny ones... I like puns).

I might change this rating when I come down from my relief high (from getting out of that slump) but for now it gets a 4.5; I recommend this for anyone looking for a slow paced read, enjoy. <<less

I understand people who don’t like novels with a lot of set-up, but you shouldn’t rate a story 1/5 just because you don’t like this type of story that actually puts a lot of depth to both the world and the characters in it. You can keep your opinion and no one will force you to read it, but at least don’t give an unreasonably low rating that could negatively impact the translator’s motivation or the popularity of a new project. Anyway, going by your standard, doesn’t that mean 99%... more>> of western fantasy literature, which heavily focuses on world and character building isn’t worth reading? As for the story itself, it looks promising and I’d rather abstain from giving a rating until I am at least a few hundred chapters in as I’m one of those people that don’t like to judge a book by it’s cover / initial impressions, but since I feel the current rating is lopsided, I’d give it a temporary 5 star boost. Who knows, if I really did judge books by their covers, I would’ve missed reading more than half of my current top-list. <<less

When some people said “It’s slow” to some webnovel, there are good chances that the novel is good.

Usually those people can’t stand a good novel with good setting, good prose, and nice build up character. They want MC with some bullsh*t luck become some cool dude killing and exterminate his enemy in some 30ish chapter and repeat that premise forever.

But Shrouding The Heavens is not that shallow kind of novel. It has a good setting, nice prose, and solid character. It’s very recommended for you who bored with shallow wish... more>> fulfillment novel. <<less

I really like this mc's personality. No nonsense and very decisive decision making capability. When he wants his enemy dead, then that person is dead immediately. The way the author writes the action is immensely satisfying. This really is a gem. Important: Don't bother reading the earliest translation, they are unreadable and gives disservice to this great novel. Instead, read the excellent translation from faktranslation.

Great Novel, Interesting Concept!!

Although I myself think that it's too early for reviewing this. But I can't stop myself to recommend and tell something about it.

This novel is a xianxia with a mixture of modern facts and mystery twist which somehow deemed it different. Truth be told. This novel feels like a "whole class transported to another world genre (J) " only this novel is more deep and follow the usual Chinese Path, cultivation facts and Chinese literature and histories. The story follow the usual immortal path but with... more>> lots of twist and turns.. When compared with other xianxia this story gives a totally different atmosphere and reeks with mysterious feel <<less

Not as good as perfect world, yet still very enjoyable. This novel lacks something, I can't put my finger on it but I think it may have to do with story direction or maybe its the world building. In any case the writing and translation is good and the novel itself is enjoyable. I recommend it if you are looking for something to read. P.S The beginning of the novel is incredibly slow and it takes almost 50 chapters for cultivation to start which can be a turn off for... more>> many, just a warning so that you can push through that start, because as interesting as it was I feel that it dragged for a bit too long. <<less

I'm enjoying this series from the author of Perfect World.

Slow build up but after they travel to this xianxia world, things get very interesting.
MC is slowly growing and the story is moving along. The pacing is good that keep you clicking on the next chapter. It's a good series.

Fairly interesting take on the "ordinary guy in cultivating world" story. MC is also somewhat atypical in the sense that he realizes his limits and takes care of "business" intelligently.

Though the story progression is slow and the plot introduction is so long, I still think that the story is great. It gives the feel of a great plot. The longwindedness in the start is worth it after the first 50 chapters. For the MC, I can say he's still average, still has a long way to go to become OP but what I care is a reasonable power progress. I hope this one won't betray my expectation.

A great Xuanhuan novel, not typical force over brains but some of the characters are dumb. Some of the tags are missing like "Time Skips"... The pace of the story is really slow and detailed and with the current translation speed I can't recommend you to read it because you'll break the immersion.

Up to 102: Your usual lucky encounters with godly items based on luck and chance meetings, and your usual "sending enemy after the previous one was dealt with". There are a lot of time skips, sometimes months, sometimes... more>> years. <<less

Attracted by the cover art to be totally honest. Synopsis provided wasn't even a factor. I like how as of the current chapter (105) you've already got enough of the story to keep you completely immersed. Much intrigue, much mystery especially with the history and theories about the Tai Chi Eight Trigrams symbol. That was an interesting addition to an already great story. The MC is a clear-headed, no bullsh*t protagonists that uses his head to solve problems that he feels don't require force. There's more, but anything else is... more>> a huge spoiler so take this with a grain of salt, but if you love works by Er Gen, you'll love this. <<less
