I feel like it's best read without looking at spoilers first, just know that it doesn't have HE, more of BE with the remaining mysteries left open and up for speculation.

But it's pretty easy to guess early on. And then we're left wanting to know what's actually happening. Unraveling why his boyfriend stood him up on a date to India. The story-telling is hooking, jumping between past and present very abruptly a lot of time but it feels just right and even added to the atmosphere of confusion.

Xiao Jin's state... more>> of mind made the descriptions of the things he saw and experienced during his trip in India more fascinating. They were vivid and exaggerated, weird and mysterious, making me feel like there were a lot of small details to notice. Though I suggest just go with the flow, savor it and don't think too much.

There could be a lot of explanations for what's happening with MC. I'm not good at this, but I've read this too many times that I can't help but keep thinking.

Spoiler

One is that he is stuck on an endless time loop because he couldn't accept his boyfriend's death and instead keep looking for him to India. The death probably was a su*cide to find relief by drinking poison like Shiva swallowing a python. There's a news about Shen Xu's death on the newspaper, that's why his reaction was so extreme. His superior asked him if he'd be ok going alone, and being generous about adding more days because they knew he just lost his boyfriend.

But in ch 12, he chose to go to the left bus instead of the right like in ch 1, so it might be that it's a straight timeline and Xiao Jin having delusions every time he go to India. That's why there's a lot of his wishes on the tree that looked old.

There's also a possibility that they did left to India together and Shen Xu died in India, su*cide or not, so Xiao Jin keeps on repeating things that he did together with Shen Xu.

Or Xiao Jin is in a dream, he fell unconscious when he was hit at the end and the memory of him going to India keep repeating.

Another one, as is fitting with the theme, is that he was in a cycle of reincarnation. Shen Xu said in Ch 1 that he had gone to India many times, but when would he find the time to go play to India when he was only squeezing up to save money all his life. Xiao Jin relived this life many times, always forgetting Shen Xu (but Shen Xu remembers?). Or he's in purgatory, Shen Xu's soul was sent to find him and he'd only get out of there if he obeyed Shen Xu's wish, stayed in China and stop looking for him in India.

The summary says "he never missed an appointment". That said, no matter what Xiao Jin choose, be it the left bus or the right bus there'd always be Shen Xu waiting for him, never missing the appointment.

What a ride this book was... I absolutely adore it.

It was a confusing read, nonetheless, very fascinating and intriguing. I liked the portrayal of the protagonist's thoughts and how we cannot seem to think about reality because we follow his every step. His confusion, his sorry, his pain, his love, in spite of the novella's length, you feel it all.

As an Indian, I love how the author seemed to have done her research on our culture. Despite not going too deep and being careful, the author clearly conveys the meaning... more>> behind her simple words while also making a deep impact on the reader's worldview.

I loved reading albeldayuia's theory above and even though I have nothing to add to it, I will return to this page occasionally to read other perspectives.

Definitely worth a read! <<less

I think it's great. The descriptions of their travel as well as the unraveling of their backstories is well done. This made me think for once. I recommend paying attention to the smallest details. The main character's vacation trip to India is like a different kind of trip....

People who like to analyze what they're reading, could you explain this story to me? 'cause I read this in passing (the tragedy tag wasn't there yet) but now I'm in tears and I don't know what happened... Did the boyfriend die? Is our MC imagining things out of loneliness? What happens after MC realizes the events have been repeating? What made him forget about his boyfriend in the first place?

pls

Open ended/Bad ending depends really.

I skipped to the last 2 chapters to check this out and I sort of regretted cause it is sad and confusing.

Spoiler

Reading the comments on the site points to ML su*cided and MC is stuck in a time loop/delusion after finding out of ML's death.
