She’s a Passerby, But Can See the Protagonist’s Halo

My name is Yan, and since I was a child, I’ve been able to see some strange things.

For example—

In elementary school, our new neighbor Aunt Tan had a pair of all-around genius twins, who were like the “precious little geniuses” with halos above their heads. They could recite the English-Chinese dictionary backwards at three, master both Chinese and Western musical instruments by five, and hack into a country’s database by seven…

Growing up next to such prodigies, my life was inhumane, tragic, and constantly subjected to comparisons.

To escape the comparisons with these “other people’s children,” I specifically applied to a private boarding school for middle school.

On my first day, my deskmate was a small, thin girl with bangs, wearing an old uniform, and her voice was as faint as a mosquito’s.

Three months later, she woke up from a nap with a “rebirth” halo above her head.

She moved effortlessly among the cold academic genius, the wolf-like school bully, the fierce boss, and the gentle childhood friend, leaving me, a lonely onlooker, utterly amazed.

By university, I thought I had finally escaped this abnormal world.

But as soon as I stepped into my dorm room, my footsteps froze.

My roommates each had halos like “ancient times to modern,” “post-apocalyptic superhuman,” “will die if not spending money,” and “ghost king revival.”

I clutched my little blanket and applied to the counselor for a room change, but to no avail.

Over time, I gradually got used to it. “Handover systems,” “management systems,” “book transmigration,” “infinite worlds,” “three-and-a-half-year-olds,” “interstellar live streams,” “red envelope groups”…

The types of halos kept increasing, and I was able to calmly ignore all of it, focusing on my own life.

Every morning, I skillfully helped my “ancient to modern” roommate, who was being blacklisted online, dodge campus paparazzi and secure seats for class.

At noon, I assisted my tycoon roommate in distributing today’s haul of luxury skincare and designer bags, tasting the city’s top private chef’s custom lunchbox, and exclaiming with emotion, “Darling, can I really accept these?”

In the evening, I enjoyed the flowers and plants cultivated by my superhuman roommate on the balcony, tasting a mutated cherry tomato and commenting, “I feel refreshed and purified.”

Late at night, when my ghost king roommate quietly climbed back through the window, I peeked out to ask, “You’re back a bit late today, didn’t bring anything back, did you?”

My name is Yan, and I am not the protagonist of this world.

Amazing! The FL and ML are purely passerbys, but there’s always a series of coincidences and misunderstandings that make them seem very op and mysterious to the halo bearers. The ancient transmigrators think she’s one of the, so does the apocalypse transmigrator, so does the multidimensional shopkeeper etc, you get my drift. Overall a very wholesome read, I expected the halo individuals to be entitled and egoistic, but all of them were so nice and the group dynamic was so wholesome

I really liked it but I’m a traditional girlie, that’s why I really like Asian novels (when you find a good one, they balance out traditional with modern very well) something that Western novels aren’t doing at all any more. They’re pure boss babe or Feminist 101.

And this one and a lot of others on this site I noticed has that subtle not subtle Feminist vibe that’s not likable to me.

I want babies, I want to see the bride that has a great relationship with her family being walked down... more>> the aisle by them both (she’s an only child), I want to see her grow as a wife and mother (let’s be so real, they’re both set of parents only child, and they’re not planning on having kids at all in Asia).

The stereotypical boss babe with the simp husband who’s okay with everything she does and says because of course she’s always right. Is so overrated and overdone in novels. I wish a feminist tag existed. Men like him are so spineless. He has no character except to be MCs emotional support yes man. Spineless!

Anyhow 1 less start for the Feminist BS. Also, was all over the place with different characters that really weren’t interesting at all. It lost the plot several times. I mainly skipped over those chapters. <<less

I was honestly thinking I wanted to read a novel where the MC is a passerby (cause I really liked the concept of "She's an Overpowered Passerby") but for the MC to be more of a legit "passerby" rather than a main character and bam, someone decided to translate this novel lol. I MTL all the way to the end and yes, it is not bad. Our MC is described as the "girl next door" type and isn't overly beautiful and the ML is her childhood sweetheart/boyfriend who is also... more>> described as having good facial features, bronze skin, handsome, but not overly handsome. It's refreshing from most novels where both MC/ML have god-like beauty.

The story is more like a slice of life, following the everyday life of the sweet couple starting college together. Our MC can see protagonist halos and throughout the whole novel we are introduced to various ones. It's interesting to see characters such as rebirth, quick transmigration, chasing wife crematorium, end of the world apocalypse, etc. all in the same novel. There are also other lesser known ones (at least I don't read these types) such as story investigator, justice system, traveling blog, etc. And everyone is given a bit of screentime, although some more than others but for the most part, each "halo protagonist" has a story that our MC/ML ends up helping out with. I think the author did a good job in including all the characters up until the very end. MC has 5 other female dorm friends and ML has another 5 so total, there are 12 of them. With so many "main characters" to focus on then it's understandable that some don't appear as often as others. Regardless, the friendships and interactions between all characters were nicely done.

Our MC and ML are just normal ordinary characters compared to their roommates. However, since they know so many halo protagonists then they can coordinate help from the most reliable source when there's an issue which causes others to think that MC/ML are actually hidden masters. The misunderstandings becomes so bad that they eventually become special members of a special team dealing with supernatural events, etc. They never claimed to be anything more than just ordinary people but of course no one believes them. Now, this is where it's a bit confusing because the only thing MC has that is special just seems to be the ability to see the halos/titles of main characters. But then she can see ghosts too and random stuff happens where it seems like the author was trying to hint at something. For example, MC being able to use a toy gun from the end of the world which ordinary humans cannot use because they needed to input special powers. Or being able to ring the soul bell that ordinary humans also cannot ring. So I was like, ok, they have to have a special identity at some point right? So I kept reading, and reading, and reading all the way to the end and.... THERE'S NOTHING. Idk what to expect. Honestly, it also ended so quickly that I think the author may have gotten bored and instead of figuring out an excuse, just kept them as normal ordinary people and ended it there.

Now, talking about the ending, here are the spoilers:

Spoiler

You see special halos appear up until the last few chapters. And then everything just ended. Like, it was done so hastily that it didn't make sense and was actually very disappointing. The last major event cleared up Ding Ling's (ghost king roommate) story but like, it kinda fell flat. I thought there should be a last major bad guy but you don't even see the evil practitioner in action, you just find out that he got arrested smoothly and all the souls were saved, etc. And then there was no other roommates that had the same kind of conclusion. Instead, everyone was still the same as we last saw them. Then there's a time skip. So the novel only went through 2 years of their 4 year college life and we skip 2 more years to when they finished college and MC and ML are getting married. Then, they had their wedding, everyone was there, the halo protagonists start to joke about what the MC/ML's actual background is (like if they came from the end of the world, was reincarnated, or were cultivators, etc) and MC/ML just said, we are 100% ordinary people. Everyone laughed but no one actually agreed and that was that. That was the ending. I mean, they did stay ordinary all the way until the very end but... like... why all the foreshadowing when nothing comes out of it?? Honestly, I think it would have been fine to make them extraordinary people at the very end because it's been hinted at sooooo much throughout the rest of the novel. So when that doesn't happen then the reader is just left very confused.

[collapse]

Overall, it was a pretty good read. The characters all act more like normal characters would. For example, the Miracle Doctor from ancient times actually is fascinated with how advanced medicine has gotten (organs can be replaced by machines, viruses are a thing and can be seen with microscopes, surgery has become so advanced, etc) that he frantically tries to absorb all the new knowledge instead of just relying on his medical skills which some can be considered out of date or no longer needed. I find myself agreeing a lot with some of the very reasonable things MC does and say and it has a good sense of humor now and then. However, the ending was too rushed and honestly, a bit confusing to me. I wish there was a bit more explanation or more identity to the MC/ML but we didn't get anything so I was left disappointed. But up until that point, I did enjoy the novel and its different halo character stories very much. If you think the idea is interesting then I would say give it a try. But don't be too surprise that it ends too quickly. <<less

Cute!

I MTLed a little ahead and the story so far has been fairly entertaining.

The story follows Yan who has been able to see protagonist/cheat halos since she was young. It's due to her experience with halo-ed people in childhood and high school that she has experience in dealing with the troubles that can come her way, which influences how she acts around her new roommates who all have halos.

Accompanying her as a psychological support (and doing what he can) is her childhood friend/boyfriend. It's a pre-established relationship which I thought... more>> was quite refreshing. They're quite sweet with each other, it's cute. So far he seems to be halo-less which is cool.

As for the roommates, so far it seems to be set up so

Spoiler

the roommates misunderstand Yan's power level to be higher than it is. The post apocalyptic superhuman believes Yan is also a superhuman hiding her powers, knowing more than she lets on. The revived ghost king thinks Yan is a high level practitioner of mystic arts who does not want to reveal herself and selflessly does good deeds. And rich lady thinks Yan comes from old money, the type that is elegantly understated but with very deep pockets.

[collapse]

The misunderstandings are fun, it's a light read and I want to see what kind of trouble Yan will get roped into next while deepening her friendships with her roommates and other people. Overall, it's a good start! <<less

So good! Totally my type and it ended up being so much better than what I expected. The characters around our main characters were well developed, the plot was interesting, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it has exciting moments, the other characters being "main characters" had their own interesting thing going on, the plot was well created and the story ended with no loose ends.

As for what the another reviewer said about the MC being able to use some items other people couldn't use like the apocalyptic... more>> gun, that actually wasn't what happened, the MC couldn't use it and was only able to use it like other ordinary humans (so it only made noise). That was actually the only scene that annoyed me in this novel because suddenly the MC's IQ went out of the window and knowing her roommate came from an apocalyptic world took it out and seemed genuinely oblivious when questioned about it. Either way yeah there is something mysterious about her power, after all she does have a golden finger which is seeing other's haloes and attracting them and connecting them, but I am fine with not knowing the real reason and just thinking of theories along the other halo individuals. You do start thinking "oh, that's just a funny coincidence" but as the story progresses you see how everything is connected and I just love it and I love an author that plans their stories.

Anyway yeah, maybe it's because I've been disappointed with other novels' endings but this was perfect imo, I wouldn't change anything, perhaps add some extras where we get more about the other characters lives but this was still fine, the main story was good (edit: and I actually checked the author's works and I saw that Kaka got her own novel, idk if in the future other characters will too). It surprised me really, I thought this would just be a simple fun story with halo individuals and their antics with the MC being misunderstood for being just like them, but it actually has a plot and I really enjoyed it, it has everything I love in a story and I liked the message of everyone being their own story's protagonist. Especially when so many novels have only the main characters be above everyone, not here, I wouldn't say any of them is above other characters, they all have their own stories. <<less

So from description, MC is a girl who somehow can see the halo of "protagonist" and believed that she is a passerby.

If you read from the beginning, all the halo protagonist around MC somehow misunderstand MC identity and maked up the reason for themselves.

But somehow all this misunderstanding could be said not a mistake? Cause MC is really mysterious. In a way all the protagonist with system somehow make the task connected with MC.

... more>> MC always got involved with all the halo incident but never ends with a bad result.

It is like if you say that the one with halo is a protagonist on its own, then MC kinda like Heaven's favorite daughter. <<less

One of the best goddamn novels ive ever read, at least in this niche genre.

The MC Yan and her boyfriend Jue are actually so damn refreshing its amazing. They're so wholesome and so in love its crazy. No romantic drama what-so-ever other than the other characters love life.

Even though their romantic life isnt the initial focus it sure is one of its best parts and becomes more prominent later on.

Seeing her dormmates speculate about Yan's life is so funny and honestly the best part of the series.
