On his deathbed, her adoptive father grasped Ying Xiaoman’s hand and gasped, “Em… em… em—”

Ying Xiaoman tearfully embraced him.

With bulging eyes and his last breath, he forced out one final word: “—brace revenge!”

Ying Xiaoman packed her belongings and journeyed to the capital city to fulfill her adoptive father’s dying wish—to exact vengeance upon… his master’s family.

Her target was Yan Congshi, a corrupt official in the capital.

The capital was vast, teeming with beautiful people. On an ordinary rainy day, she rescued a man on the brink of death, who happened to be exceptionally handsome.

The handsome man weakly opened his eyes and gazed at her for a long time.

In a daze, he recited, “A pearl bathed in light, crimson robes stained with dust. Like wispy clouds veiling the moon, or a gentle breeze swirling snow…”

Ying Xiaoman retorted, “I don’t understand. Speak plainly.”

The man: “…”

He switched to plain speech: “For saving my life, I owe you a debt of gratitude as deep as a gushing spring. Whatever you desire, I can make it happen for you, miss.”

Ying Xiaoman declared, “I want to kill the corrupt official Yan Congshi in the capital.”

The man: “…”

Satisfied with the man’s promise, Ying Xiaoman nodded. “By the way, I haven’t asked your name yet.”

The man replied, “Yan Qi.”

Ying Xiaoman was shocked. “You’re also surnamed Yan? What’s your relationship with the corrupt official Yan Congshi?”

Yan Qi’s expression remained unchanged as he said, “The corrupt Yan Congshi and I live under the same roof. Though we’re distant relatives of the same clan, there’s a deep, blood-soaked grudge between us. You’d be doing me a favor by killing him, miss!”

Ying Xiaoman marveled, “The great families in the capital are so complicated!”

Much later, Ying Xiaoman would accidentally discover that the young master of the Yan family, the Junior Lord of the Court of Judicial Review, Yan Congshi… was also known as Yan Qi.

[Male Lead’s Perspective]

I examine myself thrice daily:

Have I finished reviewing cases for the day? Will Xiaoman let me in tonight? Has Xiaoman given up on killing me today?

As much as I enjoy this book, ngl she's so dumb it's painful. I think for the first 25 chapters her naivete is charming although there is still something in the back of my mind that thinks the writing is not fully capturing the depth of how she equates hunting for animals the same as killing people without any experience. I think that's supposed to be comedy? And this whole revenge plan is pretty much comedic for like the first 25 chapters or so.. but it gets tired fast.

At first... more>> she's like okay then I won't get caught... But then she does something in front of many people who can see her... And then she also asks people who she initially didn't get along with for help... It's like her brain is very dumb and that is why she is 16. It's very obvious that the author knows she's dumb because they made her so young otherwise the age Gap wouldn't be so wide. I really struggle with dumb characters especially main characters personally.... And I thought I could forgive this just because the writing was good in general. The writing on her is just specifically unique but overall typical.. feels very shallow. She doesn't think very hard.
Spoiler

she doesn't think why would she know how he looks like... She doesn't think that she could be wrong.... She doesn't think that out of all the brothers there why is the eldest one the one that's the most responsible... She doesn't think to truly understand if he's a bad official.... She doesn't even think to ask multiple people if he is a bad official... Because she doesn't have much education which also begs the question why do so many men like her... Because she's charming And beautiful and young yes but she definitely Lacks intelligence or at least critical thinking you know... Which is another question to why does the male lead who is so smart likes her And is 20 f*cking 4? Because she's beautiful yes because she's charming yes... But that's it.... Is that enough for our marriage I don't know I guess for him and this romance novel..... So although the storytelling itself for the writing is incredibly written except for the whole revenge part which is poorly written.... But written in a way that's supposed to be humorous so I guess it's not poorly written because it is humorous for maybe like the first three times... She herself is just so dumb LOL. She doesn't communicate... She doesn't confirm... She also seems to really be psychopathic or a sociopath cuz who thinks that they can just mu*der someone because, look, she doesn't even have a long-standing grudge... Like this isn't something her father has been telling her throughout her life... This is something she learned within 3 days within I guess a stressful period. And she said you know what I can be? a mu*derer... No problem I can kill somebody... I was a hunter... Same thing same difference... No it is not the same difference!! The mental difference between killing an animal and killing a human is totally different unless you are a social path.... And the author does never like goes into that never goes into deep with that either. They don't like explain how she can cross that.... That isn't even a mental block for her.... And then when she explains her plans in a male lead and the male lead is like like no you're going to get locked up... Like she's like okay I won't get caught... But then when she tries to kill the person she thinks is the male lead or whatever the person she thinks she supposed to kill... She does it in front of so many people and also like speaks aloud and they can also see her face... How she's supposed to get away with that?... Like she does care about her family... But it seems like she doesn't because she never makes a backup plan for what if she does get caught... She never tells them when she's going to do it so they can like run away... She doesn't think about getting caught... It's just something about what happens if she were to get caught to her family... Like the depth is not there. It is a comedy novel I guess even though she's supposed to be serious and it's not that funny at this point because it's just a long drawn out joker why she's dumb.

Surely someone can also explain to me why a random 16-year-old mountain girl who is really abnormally strong and has hunting skills... It's a better spy, better at sneaking, better at infiltrating, better than Martial arts specialists And bodyguards and guards... Surely no one can not explain that.... The only explanation is do not take this book seriously at all LOL... I mean I know it's supposed to be comedic but you know I'm trying to also enjoy the novel for some sense of like groundedness of you know like possibility of things happening so I can think of this book logically to some degree even if it's for fun..... But for fun isn't s*upidity for me

My God her brain works in mysterious ways. The ways in order to make a chick flick misunderstanding in ancient China.... I didn't know that you could do that for ancient China novels but now I know. Now I know. I really hate misunderstandings like this and I really hate how dumb she is my God. Even though that ML is Drawing pictures and trying to explain in a sensitive way... This girl is like not computing and she's immediately so sure she's got the right person without confirming.... Like is she a native of Beijing or does she just think she's psychic or how can she be so assured of herself? Of course she can be because this book is completely unserious so unserious do not take this book seriously my f*cking God

[collapse]

I think you should genuinely like dumb characters... I mean I could have forgiven it if the author was willing to relent and stop doing this after a couple of chapters but the author is committed unfortunately. So if you like that kind of dumb but comedic and unique characters... By unique characters I think that male lead is more unique than she is at this point.... Then you will like this novel?... But otherwise you might feel like you're suffering like me right now even though I like the characters.... Tentatively I want to say that because obviously she is really frustrating me right now.... But yeah I like the story And I thought it was funny a couple times but right now it's really frustrating.

I think because the writing was so good in the beginning... I took this novel too seriously even though I knew it was comedic... But I genuinely think if you don't expect it to be anything more than comedic (because the main character is quite dumb)... Then you will not enjoy this novel. So yeah don't be me. Besides that, it's storytelling and it's well written for the purpose that is written for so you would enjoy it if you like this.... Genuinely do not be fooled. this book is so unserious.

Updated: 3.5.... rounded up ONLY BECAUSE the crime / mystery writing especially with the smart ML in the latter third of the novel was 110% better than the comedic revenge romance story in this novel. I thought although there were hints sprinkled out the novel, the causes and why and results were not cliches or things found in other books and thus very refreshing. The biggest crime however is how the the stepmother never got a name or appearance description. Like that's a real crime. Almost worthy of me not rounding up my rating. Ngl. Lol and yes I added the "comedy" tag... You're welcome <<less

Warning: this novel will make you feel physical pain from the amount of cringe inside

MC is dumber than a rock, lacks strong motivation (why is she even that hell bent on *mu*dering* her supposed enemy if she was a random village girl?) and while funny at first, it gets very tiring 20+ chapters in.

Like, she's so blockheaded that she's a hazard to everyone around her and herself (and has no other redeeming qualities other than "beautiful" and "physically strong")

She randomly decided that dude is her mortal enemy even though... more>> all her reasoning is baseless conjecture, and flat out refuses to hear facts that say differently from her delulu beliefs 😭

So yeah, ShortK's review is spot-on <<less

FL is a simple, valiant, lovable, rural beauty with mad knife skills. Before his death, her adoptive father instructed her to go to the Capital, get revenge on their family enemy, and send an item to a particular address. With her now widowed adoptive mother in the Capital, the FL gets into all sorts of mildly comedic misunderstandings and triggers several criminal cases along the way.

ML is a cunning fox in the justice department, head over heels for the FL, and is very attentive/respectful/supportive of the FL. The criminal cases were surprisingly good, and part of a massive conspiracy.

The FL and her adoptive mother are good country folk, with humble, kind, and straightforward personalities, and how they kept innocently stumbling into criminal matters was pretty funny for me.

Anyway, an enjoyable, fluffy novel in an ancient Capital. It would make a good drama. Translation is excellent, chapters are long, it's a

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this!

This story is a lighthearted romcom that I found very enjoyable.

The female lead is a girl who moves to the capital to pursue her father’s deathbed wish of ‘taking revenge’. She fishes the male lead up from the river and after learning that his family attempted to assassinate him, she allows him to stay with her. She’s dumb and headstrong and really endearing.

The male lead seemingly falls in love with the FL at first sight and while attempting to woo her... more>> learns that she’s trying to kill him. Throughout the story he investigates a major case, deals with his enemies and love rivals, and figures out how to stop FL from wanting to kill him. He’s sly and scheming but also earnest and steady. He really makes up for the FL’s lack of wits but it never feels condescending.

The translation is quite good, the story and writing are enjoyable, all the characters are likeable, so try this out if you’re thinking about it! <<less
