In the dreamer’s dream, the dreamed one awoke.
— Borges

“I exist between the heavens and earth, in the sunlight, in the wind, and in dreams.”

One night, Yu Hao, a college student who was at his wits’ end had an unexpected encounter with a mysterious visitor – “General” – who had dream travelled. He led Yu Hao in solving the countless riddles that abounded in the realm of the conscious, and lit up the fire beacons on the meandering Great Wall.

Thereafter, the darkness retreated, the sun rose, and when the long night was thoroughly lit up, the him who existed in reality was reborn.

The black dragon that roared, the lighthouse and demonic eye on the coastline, the rain forest before Chichén Itzá, the fierce beasts that wreaked havoc in the Colosseum…the bizarre projection of reality in one’s consciousness reflected the hidden place that the sunlight in reality couldn’t touch – the innumerable sins of the human heart.

The journey of seizing dreams continues, and one can only hope that the sun will continue illuminating the human heart.

——

Fire beacons on the Great Wall were lit up to signal a border invasion.

I will just say that I've never felt anything when I sometimes read/watch the Slice of Life genre except for this once. I have to say that this is my favourite BL novel so far (like, if you could only read one BL novel ever I would choose this one). I only found out what "heartwarming" meant when I read this.

The interactions are great. Characters are thought out. The romance is "slow", but if you binge read like me I'd say it's appropriate. More importantly it's great. Not every character... more>> is suddenly gay and not everyone magically develops a liking towards the protagonist.
Spoiler

Except maybe the main love interest. But maybe the spark should be kind of sudden? IDK. It's kind of sudden (i.e. Can also be considered not sudden), and I just don't oppose it.

[collapse]
The setting is set in the modern world and many [pop culture?] references (?) are very relatable. Societal pressure against homosexuality is neither downplayed nor overplayed. Etc. Overall, I would just say that things are very true to the current world. And that along with the interactions are what makes it so enjoyable. And so relatable if you're gay.

Usually I would rate things according to the ratings I think it should receive in the site, but for this one, I think it deserves an ~4.8 out of my perfect 5.0 for me. (For comparison, right now I would rate Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil an ~4.5 out of 5.0.) (Quick transmigration still wasn't a thing back then and that one was done pretty well.) (Of course, these are different genres and can't be compared that easily. But it's just to give you an idea.)

The synopsis was pretty confusing but just give this a try. It's really good. You won't regret it. <<less

Got into this through the audio drama. This is a work where you seriously need brain cells, dreams and the interplay with real life intersect too much here. Besides this, the lush scenery as depicted through the author's pen also deserves a mention! Glad that someone picked it up!

Honestly I started the book with really high hopes as the concept was so unique and I found the exploration of the psyche very interesting. But this book really is lacking in terms of a central plot that will keeping you hooked. The dreamscapes are amazing and the crime fighting scenes too but everything feels scattered with a lot of filler plot in between.

Spoiler

In many ways the struggles become very repetitive and the ending becomes more or less predictable for each dream they seize. Towards the ending it almost seemed like new side stories were being introduced out of nowhere to make the plot move- FL in the south with the pyramid scheme being one of them. While as separate entities the subplots are interested they failed to blend in a "flawless" manner to paint a bigger picture (atleast not as flawless as the "male gods" in the book)
Character wise I loved how Yu Hao's character started out and his growth in certain ways. But ZS is going to be one of my least favourite main leads. His character development is more or less nill, and where will the scope of development be when he is almost perfectly flawless- rich, intelligent, good at everything AND with supernatural powers. His only drawback is lack of anger management and his jealous, controlling and possesive side which he never gets rid of completely. And this "too flawless to be real" is not just a problem with ZS but everyone except YH - everyone is a "male god" who our MC can't help but admire

[collapse]

Towards the end I just skimmed through pages to find out the ending and start another book. It feels like with the whole concept of dreams the author could have done so much more but got lost somewhere in the web they spun. <<less

There were some parts of this story that were extremely thrilling. There were parts where I cried. Then there were parts where I wanted to pick up the computer and smash it against the wall in frustration. This was NEARLY a great story. But having persevered through the end (and the end redeemed it a lot or it would only be three stars) I can only say it's a good story.

Why?

  1. The sections of story dealing with the dreamers struggles and the conflicts in the dream landscapes were thrilling, descriptive and exciting. The story leapt forward in these sections.
  2. Once the drama of establishing the main CP was over, the real life sections dragged the story down to a crawl. Or less. Like a sailboat sitting in dead calm water while sailors wait for a breeze and twiddle their thumbs.
If the author could have chopped out about 20-40 useless chapters that belonged in a plain slice of life story this would have been so much better. That's what makes it frustrating, because when the writing goes to the fantasy elements, it soars and takes you flying like the rollercoaster and stopping that for so long to watch the characters struggle for years to establish themselves (yes we all know real life job hunting is like this, no need to grind it in)... more>> destroys the rhythm, tone and style of the book. It's like two different stories mashed together in a muddle. Maybe there was a way to meld the two and have it work but it didn't here.

All of that said. If you skip all the life bits after the boys start jobs and just stick to dreams its a pretty good book. <<less

This is a masterpiece that I read a while ago and forgot to review. The prose is absolutely fantastic, and there's a generous amount of character growth, as well as romanticism mixed with reality. Be aware that this is a bit heavy and not so much of a light read.

It's been almost a year since I read the novel, and there is a part that really stayed with me and breaks my heart every time I think about it, because it was just so real.

When Kaikai's lover committed su*cide, it wasn't that they didn't love each other, but that there was just too much pain. And sometimes, love isn't enough to overcome all.

Often times, there isn't enough discussion about su*cide and depression. They're told that "people love you, " and "it'll get better, " but what does that really mean?

[collapse]

This author really does a lot of research in all of their novels, and this novel happens to be centered around psychology, so there are many references to real theories and theorists. It's not necessary to know them to read the novel, but having an understanding of the references will definitely help with better comprehension of the novel and where each character is coming from. <<less

5 stars, absolutely.

I can't remember the last time something I've read hit me this damn hard. The story really makes you think and reflect. It deals with some heavy stuff and the questions the characters sometimes ask might sound similar to anyones own ideas if they have gone through a rough time or if someone you know has BUT you get an answer to all the issues presented.

If you are looking for a light read that doesn't require any deep thinking, maybe save this one for another day. I still... more>> recommend it though 100%

Think Inception, with the dream hopping and all that. I assume its dream hopping to different people but I just finished the first person so who knows.

[collapse]

For me its kind of shallow, I really expected a lot more from these stunning reviews. Its a journey of everyones self-discovery, friendship, etc. But the first arc was so info dump heavy with close to no emotional buildup that that the tragic pasts just made me feel nothing. (Except for the grandma bit. I mean grandma, who doesnt love their grandma?).

The next few arcs would probably be the same, so Im shelving this for now.

The plot reminds me of every Young Adult Fantasy Adventure western genre novel, but its Chinese obviously. Very shounen anime. Friendship is the best. Ohana means family. Love trumps all, and was there all along.

Im giving it a 4 star rating since its actually good - its nice enough without the annoying cliched villain, very good translation and nice characters. Its just not my cup of tea.

4.7 ⭐ rounded off to 5.

Interesting plot!! Combination of slice of life and fantasy (dream)

MC's personality is consistent with the plot (and irl). Although he is improving, he's still timid and his decision is based on ML's want etc. Since, u could not really change the personality u grew up with in just a month or so. //I wish I could hit the MC with a newspaper; he loves the ML too much.

I like how the ML is written too. Concordant with the story, he has a temper and... more>> afraid to be in relationship/build a family. However, he changed to an overbearing, pe*verted ML since he got together with MC. I could understand his repressed self but, on what I could see, he looked like schizophrenic. Eventually, he became okay, and conceded everytime he argued with d MC. I still like his chara anyway XD

Also, kinda disappointed with ML. Due to his past, he closed his feelings. But, he shouldn't control the MC too much after he rejected him. It seems like he has this notion subconsciously "I could have you, whenever I like" since the MC is gung-ho over him. Although there are character flaws, it is indeed acceptable since, they are appropriate with the story and mc/ML are still students.
Spoiler

The only flaw that is not really accepted to me is ML's chara is too controlling even after rejecting the MC. It took 81 chapters to make d ML confess ?

(I just wanna punch myself for not reading this earlier although I'm on the latest chapter right now.) This novel is just one of the best out there. The plot is well thought, it doesn't have plot holes for me, I understood the why's and how's (there is still one unresolved thing but I knew the light is rreeaaallly near at the end of the tunnel now). The intricate fantasy being mixed by psychology was a very refreshing combination for me, and that is why I can't stop reading... more>> this. The problems were all rooted from society. Also, both the ML and MC had this slow burn of fluff that I really like. They tend to think things a bit deep so they wouldn't regret the things they do later on. I hope a lot of people can read this outstanding piece. The translation is also amazing (not to mention the extra effort they place on their notes and links). Aaaah~ this is really grreeeeaaatt overall, just look at the cover it screams FLUFF haha <3 <<less

I haves mixed feelings on this, more specifically the ML.

Sometimes he feels mature, and other times he feels annoying/bratty

Spoiler

This man knows the MC likes him, and he keeps telling him that he hopes he'd find someone else to date because he "doesn't like men, " yet becomes all possessive when he sees the MC getting close with another man and has these little tantrums where the MC is the one who has to go in and appease him.

MC also apologizes a lot too, some cases I understand, some I don't, but growing up the way he did it's not weird he feels insecure.

Anyways, back to the ML, he even says that he'd back off a bit yet doesn't change how he he acts at all. ML also has been turned on from MC as well, and the way he sends all these mixed signals is rather frustrating. 53 chapters in and he's still denying it. He said to another guy he thought who liked the MC that MC washes his clothes and was in his house, and also told MC to not wash anyone else's clothes except his.

[collapse]

But he has his good moments too, and that's why I'm able to stand how he acts sometimes.

As for the MC, at this point he's still insecure and is overly compliant to what some people say, especially the ml, to not get them mad but I'm hoping he can gain a sort of independence and stand up more for himself instead and accept that these things aren't his fault.

Spoiler

Like washing his clothes. Like, I know doing something for ML makes him happy, because of the way he is, but when I read those moments where MC worked late into the night to wash his clothes and even cleaned their room by himself, it just makes me sad. It'd be one thing if ML did some work, like cooking, so it'd feel like they're doing their equal share.

Or when ML gets annoyed he's hanging out/ getting close with another dude. It's the ML that's the problem, especially when he told MC he should start dating, not the mc's.

[collapse]

I understand MC feels like he needs to repay every bit of goodwill he's received in some way, and not owe favors to anyone, but I hope he eventually realizes he doesn't NEED to do those things. I really hope to see his character develop much more than where he is at now. If he doesn't, I'm gonna be VERY disappointed because that's what I've been hoping he'd do this entire time. <<less

Beautiful beyond words.

The storytelling is so good, the description of each dreamscapes are vivid. Both the author and the one translating did a very good job! Kuddos to both of them!

The first 2 chapters and the last 2 chapters both made me cry. The former, is heartheart-wrenching while the latter is happy tears. Thank goodness for the HE for everyone except for the evildoers.

This story is awesome.

It's a complete package, from being well written with a complex sentence structure. The diaglogues, their relativity and the meaningfulness of them, it has all. With a great translation to top it, a well-written unpredictable plot. The translators did an awesome job too. Kudos to them, for translating this so well.

The beginning of the story is actually quite miserable. It's among the chaos where the MC is introduced. Whom you can't help but sympathesize with.

The author is actually quite clever the title of the story and the... more>> sypnosis is actually quite contrasting, which prompts the readers to actually read the whole thing. I was hooked from the very first chapter, till the end.

The author loves to complicate things which actually makes it more engrossing to read. I quite like the fact that this story has focused on many elements, and tried to assemble as many things worth including possible.

Starting from the introduction of MC, meeting of both the protagonists their personal development, personality development, the struggles, the action, romance, plot everything's well written.

The romance is actually a slow burn but the author doesn't gives time to linger on that as there are so many things happening. The side characters are also intriguing, not the usual annoying, always interrupting the protagonists type. The author also focuses on the side characters as well as the main. This novel has elements which are very relatable to real life experiences, the author didn't make the novel some fairy tale type everything and everyone's perfect with almost negligible struggle. According to me that adds to the appeal of the novel.

But the author didn't forget to add some spice on occasions, preventing the novel from being tedious. It's also boring to read at some points, I am not saying it ain't boring at all. But it's negligible

Overall, my experience of reading this novel was good. <<less

While reading this book, I tried to think of what type of monsters would show up in my dreamscape if I used the Golden Crow Wheel.

I really wish I could have epic dreams like a fantasy world or zombie apocalypse but thinking deeper into it, I have OCD, so I realized wouldn't it be a bunch of giant dirty rags, tr*sh cans, and that kind of thing chasing me? When I think of that, I shudder in fear and further realize that might really be the monster of my dreams.

I... more>> hope my token is Bleach or something lol. Spray everywhere and begone!

In a dream battle, I would spray my token around and then say "This way, everyone can fight without worrying about COVID. Jiayou!"

LOLOL.

Anyways though, this is an awesome novel with incredible translation. Kudos to the translators for picking it up and finishing it!

It's that beautiful kind of story where nearly everything can be traced back to its core and title, "Seizing Dreams". I like the way the story blends the sweet with bitter, the reality of life with the dreams. It's made me feel uplifted, better than when I read a self help book lol.

Don't hesitate to read it, seriously! <<less

This novel has an interesting concept. I love how it shows a great balance with fantasy and psychological aspect. MC and ML are just perfect. This novel has 3 distinct parts. The beginning is a romance with a dash of mystery, the middle part is "slice of life" and the last part is a action movie.

The story flow is good but it got draggy in certain parts. The MC gets over his desperation too quickly. For a person to bounce back so quickly and then become a optimist is very abrupt. ML is seriously OP. ML has a IQ of 180. ML (still a student) can fool government agencies as well..... Yeah. right. The whole... more>> "seizing dreams" part was too sci-fi for me. I would have preferred it as a relic left behind by some civilization.

Despite these shortcomings, what made me finish (and enjoy) the story is the romance. The side couple of "gege" and his girlfriend was pretty realistic. The side characters all have their sad stories but they overcome it and move ahead. ML's parents are so OTT that they are ridiculous. ML's dad ending....I have no words. hahaha

Overall, its a good story with substance. Author has written a lot of philosophy as well. The translator has done a great job. There's no melodrama. no misunderstandings. Comedy is good.

I loved the epilogue.

This is an "actual" (with a plot) story. Not the empty fluff as most others. <<less

. At first, I wanted more of the dreamscape world at the beginning with more action because at a point in time the owner gave The Golden Crow Wheel away and the story focused more on the romance/ reality portion. (Sucks for them, it came back and caused trouble.)

[collapse]
Though even if you weren't in the dreamscape with our heroes, you're with the lovable dorks and their squad in their adventure in life. There were many comedic, touching, emotional, inspirational scenes though out the book that made you feel like these characters are real and life-like. It has themes of su*cide, r*pe, and domestic abuse which are done well and not over the top. The psychology aspect was a bit lacking, though nothing to blame it wasn't that important in the latter half of the story, however, it was pleasant to see all this knowledge poured into my brain in bursts. A lot of amazing quotes and lines sprinkled into the book. In the end, we do get some insight into the Golden Crow Wheel, where it came from, how did it appear, though the theorize on the Golden Crow Wheel was fantastic as well, giving the audience to visualize the mystical aspect of the Golden Crow Wheel. I like the open-ended character choice at the end of the book. We can choose whatever happened to the side characters but providing an outlined onto their happily ever after. Truly amazing. The bad; the story is a lot longer than normal BL novels however it didn't diminish the story in the slightest. On the contrary, it made it more detailed and flowed quite better with it's pacing. It took me two and a half weeks to read it, so I probably forgot the reasons why it was bad.

Characters were original and realistic. The main character, Yu Hao, is an average college student getting through life. When growing up he has it rough childhood and still has it bad, depressed, he decides to commit su*cide. I wish the book would expand on this. It happened as soon as it came and never brought up again. Though at the end of the story I suppose it explains why but, it was an abrupt change. Yu Hao has massive character development in the beginning and slowly towards the end. Unlike other uke main characters in BL, Yu hao is strong in his own way. Not overly powered or overly smart, average, which makes him lovable and relatable. He hurts people when needed and provides insight once in a while. Our main lead, for spoiler purposes, will not be named, comes to rescue him in his dream when Yu Hao tries to commit su*cide. I adore ML character, as a whole. He doesn't have an overly tragic backstory or a stereotypical attitude. He's just a normal person with advantages and disadvantages in life. He's smart and strong, but not over the top. His personality is, so realistic, I can't even describe how much I love this character. He's not cold, or indifferent, like most ML in BL novels. He makes jokes, he's brash and at first, you'll think he's a delinquent but is actually thoughtful and smart. His character development is slow but prominent. Looking back at the first few chapters with ML, it makes you smile how much the characters have grown. As for side characters, also well done. Each character has their own faults and demons they face on there own, not over the top demons but real-life demons corresponding with the characters. Each character has there own morals and thoughts as well as places in life. If you put the most seen characters dialog together and didn't say who they where you could probably guess just by personality. Mwah. Magnifico.

Overall. Long read. However, it is one of the best books. High recommend if you don't mind dark themes sprinkled in the book. If you are tired of overprotective, cold main lead this is the book for you. If you like dreams and unique world-building, if you like modern, if you like side characters better then the main character, if you like character development, if you like to take your spin on the ending, then this is the book for you. And if you don't, read it for the BL. You'll be pleasantly surprised. <<less

This kind of novel is not really my cup of tea, but it has a fantastic world building. The different story arcs are almost divided by different genres, but because of the unique concept I stayed and binge read it till the end. I could also say that this novel is a pretty heavy read (because there's a lot of angst) and I think it's more a josei genre, focusing on maturer audience. The chapters are pretty long too, so instead of 165 chapters, it will feel twice as long.

This... more>> novel is really a hell of a rollercoaster ride. It has different flavors of genres. Like in the first 60 chapters, focusing on fantasy/action. The next 20 chapters are slow romance. Next 40 slice of life. And the rest are back to action. These are just estimated chapters btw, but throughout it has drama, comedy, mystery, and I supposed I should say sci-fi because it didn't revolved magic.

The title Seizing Dreams has double meaning too, which refers to both seizing dreams in the unconscious mind, and seizing their dreams in reality. Maybe that's why the arcs feels like it's divided by different genres.

I do recommend it for people who have strong of heart (because of the angst and real life scenario) and who likes analysis of mystery (a lot of psychology concepts). Beware to people who are used to reading novels that usually focuses on a single or double genre. It threw me off, but I persisted and it was amazing, lol.

Just wanna say chapter 81 is my favorite chapter. You can really feel MC's feeling of going from hell to heaven. When you are ready to break off everything, then they suddenly got together. No words can really describe. If I'm in the position I'll also turn mute and cry tears of joy, lol.
