S-Class Except Me

Description

I heard that it’s hard to see S-class hunters in my life, but all my family members are S-class!

A celebrity family who is more famous than other celebrities, that is my house.

Except for me, Jung Haeun, who is 100% civilian and not even registered as a hunter.

People say that I’m the ugly duckling, but I’m actually quite comfortable and I like it.

I’m enjoying my life as a rich and unemployed person.

Of course, there are facts that the world, even my family members, do not know.

[The constellation ‘The Mutant of the Abyss’ is whining: please, let’s debut.] [As soon as Haeun debut, it shouted that she would be the world’s No. 0 poker face.] “I don’t want to. It’s annoying. I’m perfectly fine being treated like a civilian.”

That I am the only EX-class in the world.

I am living a hard life because of my private circumstances.

I want to live forever drinking honey like this.

But…

[‘The Mutant of the Abyss’ will make Haeun debut no matter what.] I’ve been avoiding my debut path well, but somehow the situation is ominous these days.

Ugh, this novel had SO much promise in the beginning... too bad everything that made me interested in the story basically falls apart after the big reveal I was so excited for.

Maybe if the main character would’ve maintained even a few of the things that made her (and the story) interesting to begin with I could’ve given it a little more credit, but honestly the semi-gradual shift of “yeah I can see why she would do that, probably not the best choice but it makes sense given her personality and... more>> her circumstances. We all have to figure things out.” To just straight up being like “ You’re (literally) OP as hell, but instead of putting your foot down with no hesitation like you would’ve before, all of a sudden you fold like a wet napkin and just go along with anything?!??”... it really felt like the slowest case of whiplash ever.

Again... this one had so much promise, but just like Cat Cubed mentioned, there were so many elements and things that got mentioned in passing like they were side notes that would’ve absolutely added so much more to the story and world (and would’ve helped immerse the reader more with the plot), but in the end they never went anywhere. I give it at least a 2 since I sometimes enjoy re-reading certain scenes from the early chapters, but the missed potential is sad, such an interesting premise. <<less

I rarely make a review. But for this novel, I think, I should make a review. At first, this novel intro was like typical modern fantasy like dungeon story. But, the different, we have FL as MC. And all FL's family are S-Class, except her that being civiliant (but, the truth she hid the truth she is higher than S-Class, she is EX-class). She is the only one in the world who know there was constellation, unlike all hunter who doesn't recognize them.

FL's family was like a typical rofan story,... more>> but in more realistic way. At first her family overprotectiveness & how FL annoyed with them was weird. But the story become more realistic when FL got No.1 Korean's Hunter as her bodyguard & the story become more interesting.

Spoiler

She fall into D-Class Dungeon crack & make her trauma revived. AND THAT TIME I REALIZED WHY THE FAMILY & HER ARE LIKE THIS. (Cough...) So, simply, we will see the thing why FL was so traumatized & being cornered by the survivor in this dungeon. If her brother late to find her, this experience will make her more traumatized.

[collapse]

I like FL, she was OP character in power & skill, but she not perfect. She was a wounded person who have some trauma. And it was interesting. If you in FL position, all her state was really rational & realistic, not all OP people can confront their trauma like typical MC from hunter & dungeon related story. If you become FL, a girl who want & have normal girl life, but know the responsbility as the powerful hunter, she choose to hide her awakening. Silly? No, this is realistic if you are see in real life how her parent & brother suffer because of responbility.
Spoiler

Added her fear the public not recognized or included her as her family (JUST BECAUSE HER FAMILY ARE ALL S-CLASS, I VERY ANGRY WITH THE EVIL PUBLIC).

[collapse]
Fortunately, her family was really love & care for her. But, being only one who different in the family really make her suffer.

I think she will change, but at chapter 12, it was still the introduction/orientation. But I will wait, because usually Korean novel have introduction was 10-20, sometimes came to chapter 40, so I will wait. But, I think the key of the beginning of the FL's story was the syncronation & why dungeon crack become unpredicted, even FL suffer 2 dungeon here. The tension are up.

I also like her interaction with her constelation. I dont know who will be her ML (you see, there is a romance genre). For now, the I think the first candidate is
Spoiler

Korean No. 1 Hunter.

[collapse]
His interaction with FL was wholesome. Hehe.

Btw, translator, thanks for translate the novel. The quality of translate are GREAT. <<less

Rating it 5 stars to balance out the other guy who rated low just because the story is on kakao :/

Honestly, I'd say the plot is 4/5, and my enjoyment is 4.5/5 overall! I love this trope of a really strong FL MC who needs to uncover secrets about their mysterious power. The only huge qualms I have are with the ending, since there are unexplained parts ... more>>
Spoiler

we never get an explanation of the truth of the world or how systems/powers come to be

[collapse]

What also attracted me to this book was this huge debacle in the reviews and spoilers of who the ML is. Huge spoiler ahead on who it is:
Spoiler

It's her constellation and the kid she saves, Yoon Jiho. You might be wondering, isn't that illegal given his age? Well, to explain how he became an adult and manifested in her world, I'd have to spoil the ENTIRE story. That's right, their relationship is quite literally the foundation of the story. Not only that, their relationship doesn't start until the second epilogue chapter, meaning there's only 2 chapters for their relationship. AND it's not even the main story...

So with that being said, if you don't read the extras, it will seem like Seo Dojoon will be the ML (Rick seemed to only want physical intimacy, not a relationship). In my heart, the ML will always be Seo Dojoon though. It's really regrettable that all the build-up and development with Seo Dojoon was practically abandoned, given he had a lot more interaction with Jeong Haeun compared to her constellation's system messages. Plus, we didn't get time skips with Seo Dojoon/Jeong Haeun's relationship, whereas with Yoon Jiho we're hit with "1 year has passed, " "3 years have passed, " and "7 years have passed." We, as the readers, aren't able to make that emotional attachment to Yoon Jiho since his scenes are just time skips.

[collapse]

TLDR; if you're coming for the experience and not the end of the journey, go give this novel a try. If you're coming for heavy romance, I think there are better options out there.

And one last thing, rating the novel based on accessibility is really unfair to the author's hard work. Don't blame the publisher, blame how anti-foreigner kakao services are! <<less

I love mc's family. Especially her relationship with her elder brother and her little brother

I don't really like the male leads candidate

Seo Do Jun : The previous number 1 korean hunter. His attitude towards MC changed 180 degree after mc's show her power. A rigid guy with greedy and manipulative personality. He will only did what profitable for him and his guild

R or Rick : The scammer and illegal awakener that MC meet in america. He has a beautiful blonde and honey eyes. I like the fact that he never... more>> change his attitude toward MC after he know MC identity (he still kinda a jerk, but he is real), and his ability is really usefull and unique

I suspect that the male lead is

Spoiler

Rick. First of all, MC never depend herself on seo do jun even when she was in desperate situation. There was once when Seo do jun said that MC can count on him when she needs help, but MC said in her monologue that she didn't need his help. Like a normal woman, she thought Seo do jun is handsome. But just that. She will blush when he flirt with her, but she never really open her heart.

But

With Rick / R, she acted differently. Their relationship developed really nicely. From enemy to friend. Rick can abandoned MC when she was being hunted by the world, but he didn't do that. He accompany her.

I love their kissed scene. Just like other readers, I have a complicated feelings toward that scene. But I still stand on Rick as ML. Because, after that, when rick hug or light touch MC, MC never really put a wall on him. I think she kinda get used to his flirting and get a little bit comfortable with him. I think for MC, Rick is like a warm blanket in the middle of endless cold night

[collapse]

Another possible male lead is mc's constellation

Spoiler

The little kid named jiho that mc's failed to safe in the past, is actually her own constellation. So, in the new cover, the blonde guy is rick, the balck haired guy is Seo do jun, and the little kid that mc's hugged is jiho. Mc's constellation need to pay the price of holding the system for 5 minutes, and I think that's the prince of it

[collapse]

Can't wait to read the next chapters. There are so many mystery and twist in this novel <<less

I’m only at chapter 12 but I’m already hooked.

It’s the usual trope of «I want to live a normal life but never will » and it seems like a lighthearted read but the tension is there. At chapter 12 she has already been in 2 dungeon cracks, and there is a synchronisation percentage that goes up every time she uses her powers, which we don’t know the purpose. Therefore she tries not to use her powers as much as possible and refuses to become a hunter, and although her reasoning... more>> seems very childish it’s actually not.

It’s understandable that she’s not attracted to being a hunter seeing her family being overworked because they are S classes, you can imagine the amount of expectations people would have for her being an EX class and being the only one knowing about constellations. But it’s actually mostly due to a trauma from when she first awakened.

Spoiler

Basically she fell in a dungeon crack and awakened there, and as she used her powers, she grew stronger but the dungeon & the monsters also grew stronger. So it quickly became a disaster and although she was safe, the rest of the civilians scattered weren’t...

[collapse]

So I can understand why she refuses to become a hunter, and why she brushes it off with random excuses (like the hunter school’s uniforms being ugly).

I’m glad that her family is good to her despite her being a ‘civilian’. But I already anticipate the reveal, especially to the public that tr*sh talk her for being a civilian.

As for the ML, there’s only one candidate this far, the Korean no. 1 hunter but seeing that he doesn’t appear in any of the covers makes it unlikely.

So give this novel a try, and have patience because it seems to be more than what it seems? For example her reasoning about not wanting to become a hunter being absurd when it’s actually later revealed that it’s due to a trauma. <<less

All these 5-Star Reviews and none of them have any actual substance to them. They start by summarizing what you should be expecting, but not what actually happens and the process of getting to plot development. I am not going to rehash what the story did get right (the reviews do cover them).

This is going to be a short, concise review of one particular element of the story that instantly drops the as-objective-as-possible rating straight into hell.

The author, not the translator, the author, wrote a completely inconsistent MC that has... more>> the personality of a doormat on clipped wings.

First of all, the MC has an interesting behavioural pattern before and after reveal. Because she has hide her actually abilities for a long time, the reveal does not affect her too much with her family and life goes on fairly normally in those parts.

Unfortunately, after the reveal, a lot of her actions do not match up with any change to her behavior due to the difference in perceived status. Instead of the slightly snarky, go-my-way kind of girl she had been, she veers into doormat territory and somehow doesn’t act on perceived slights in a way that would match her original personality.

There’s definitely a lot more to this, but this is the main reason it shouldn’t get anything above a three. I’m giving it a 2 because there’s several more things that I could take apart, but it might turn into an essay and it’s 3:00AM right now.

Seriously, it’s frustrating to see a decent enough to good story being devalued by the main character’s inconsistencies. <<less

Ugh. I’m tempted to drop this.

1. She doesn’t want to

Spoiler

be overworked like her family and over publicised but then she “awakens” in a public way (not her fault) but just ends up rolling with it? I wouldn’t care what ranking I was - if I didn’t want to be a Hunter, I wouldn’t. She doesn’t stick up for herself at all.

[collapse]

2. Seo Dojoon

Spoiler

is horrible. If you’d only date me AFTER I become super powerful, get your dumpster self away from me. The only reason I’m still reading regarding this point is because she apparently moves on from this greedy person and I’m looking forward to that moment.

[collapse]

3. The mystery itself

Spoiler

this could’ve been an interesting story about the overwhelming influence of the “celebrity” status in a dungeon set story and how civilians aren’t owed anything but I feel like all that’s being swept away by the annoying escalation of the supposed mystery... which apparently doesn’t really get solved, according to other reviews. Maybe the author tried to pack too much into one story or their skills aren’t up to it, because I keep seeing interesting plot points passed over as unspoken inner thoughts or narrator-addressed “if only so-and-so knew the situation, they would’ve reacted differently.” A dungeon story can just involve dungeon stuff - you don’t need to escalate it to “world destroying” every frickin’ time, y’all.

The idea behind the novel is good and the interactions between characters are well written.

But the writing quality is sloppy at best. The world building is missing a lot of information that would give readers a better understanding of how the hunters work, live and prosper. For instance do hunters level up? (No, but you realize this only after 30-40 chapters, not because it is mentioned but because it is not mentioned at all). Or how do hunters grow? Is it just experience or is there more to it? There... more>> are magicians but no mention of the kind of magic magicians use, it took over 50 chapters to discover the mc's brother can use lightening magic. There are more examples of world building that is missing and the thing that I find most disappointing about that is that most of the things that I feel are missing could be described in 1 or 2 sentences, in other words it's not like the whole story has to be rewritten to fit that information in, no it's a matter of adding a sentence here and there (that's why I call it sloppy writing).

And another thing that is hugely annoying is a lack of common sense. For instance the writer makes it seem as if reporters/journalists are all powerful beings that can stop any hunter just because of their job. The way the reporters are portrayed is just dumb, unrealistic and missing the influence of a world with hunters to be believable given the world building so far. Hunters are more than just celebrities and hunters put their live on the line to protect normal people. I would expect that at least part of the 1st gen hunters would have demanded that the press is kept in check in exchange for the services of hunters (eg You want me to put my life on the line, sure but keep the press away from the hunters). Or what is even more likely is that given the difference in strength between hunters and humans that reporters have been killed and that the governments around the world in order to protect the press and the hunters would have put up rules that would prevent reporters from acting the way they did towards the MC.

It feels very much as if the author wanted to write a normal (love?) story that plays out in a fantasy setting without actually having to treat the fantasy part, and the consequences of fantasy (magic), serious. <<less

It's simply good novel with female protagonist and there's always shortage of those.

MC is likeable, you understand why she does things her way and even when she isn't confident, she doesn't become white lotus and wait for everyone to save her.

Her family is pretty realistic and intresting. To be honest, they have less impact on plot that you would think, which is good, because there's more emphasis on MC making her own decisions.

For now (82 chapter) romance is side plot and only started. It keeps reasonable pace, there's no falling... more>> in love at the first sight and becoming possesive and there's no hundreds scenes with misunderstandings between MC and ML. ML is normal and cool guy so I like their couple.

One thing that distinguishes this novel is how realistic behaviour of all characters is. It just makes sense.

This novel isn't action packed, doesn't have dramatic face-slapping scenes or show power trips, instead it's realistic story (as much as story about dungeons and superpowers can be) about female protagonist with intresting plot, likeable characters and good world building. <<less

This novel is too frustrating to read. At first it was fun and entertaining, but on chap 82, everything went downhill. I hate it when others control MC and manipulates her at will. And this MC is kind of s*upid, like wtf does she thinks? She's OP as hell and is not taking advantage of it and be frustrated inwardly while letting people do whatever they want with her cuz they blackmailed her with sumn.

Another, there's just no chemistry at all with ML and MC. Like they're just friends cuz... more>> ML is stiff as hell. Ughh this is one of those very few times I dropped an interesting novel cuz the leads were so frustrating to read. It was a great plot, but the execution and character's personalities are 💀😤🤬 This is my honest opinion, I warned you. <<less
