This novel is very underrated. I love this author, Ji Xue Yi’s novels, even if Im really worried that I’ll get all screwed up emotionally as she always has a way to inject deep dark themes underlying the flip side of human nature. Luckily this one is positive all the way so read on with confidence!

If you love character development and passionate people, this is the book for you. I'm writing this as I'm finishing up half-way through the book.

ML was quite arrogant at the beginning, and MC had a big inferiority complex. Later on, after failing and being "rejected" by the ML, MC got her sh*t together and worked to improve. Both characters saw each other's flaws at the beginning, and it's no wonder they didn't get along. Once they both got into the limelight, both started to see each other in a positive... more>> light (ML especially as he started to realize the kind of girl he deserves to be with.)

While "character development" might not be entirely accurate for the ML, he never lost his arrogance. Instead, in the later parts of the book, we get to see his arrogance in a positive light. Rather than arrogant, he's super confident in what he's doing and knows in and out what he wants; after all, it pertains to his dreams. He's written beautifully in my opinion, and is someone I'd aspire to be. Much like our MC, I also envy his confidence, and hardworking demeanor.

MC is written well too! It was hard not to relate to her feelings of inferiority in the early chapters. Her efforts in becoming a more confident person put a smile to my face. Before accepting ML's love, she was determined to improve herself first. She gave a new meaning to "love later, dreams first" kind of thing, and I want to pursue my dreams in the same way too :)

The side characters are the best too! I never paid attention to Li Wei, but the moment the author started to hint at his life affairs, I felt that he could be a main character of another story too lol.

Update: finished the book.

I cried.

Spoiler

Reading this book is like watching an innocent child grow up ;;Q;; Jingming, Du Ruo, Prime, everyone grew a lot in these chapters and in ways I would never expect. I was totally unaware of Li Wei's death and it was so unexpected... I still find it hard to believe. ML grew so much as a person. Personally, I doubted his love for Du Ruo up until the later chapters, which shows how much he adores and treasures her in his life. It's just a little bittersweet, but I wouldn't have loved this book if it weren't that way

Reading the synopsis, if you think that you already predicted the pace of the story, you are gravely wrong! This novel couldn't be more unique from other romance novels! Actually, every relationship of this author's romance novels are unique from each other. You'll just can't help but love them all.

Every step in their character and relationship development is well written. Their feelings feels very real and genuine, and not abrupt or forced.

I wonder how author can write like this, they must be really good at human relationship or just that... more>> they are meticulous in details, leaving no loopholes for critics to pierce through.

Am I exaggerating? However, I truly felt so -- after reading everything til the end.

I don't know about the others, but this work is definitely on par with the author's other novel that has 4.5+ rating -- if not... better!

edit: I just read other reviews, thinking that whoever rated this below 5 stars -- or dropped this -- definitely haven't read enough chapters. And, tsk tsk tsk -- as I espected! Heh. All I can say is: that guy is definitely gonna miss a high quality romance novel!

To the review below complaining abt the MC's character. It's hard for us to relate to the MC 'cuz we have different living conditions from her. What is easy for us to get, might be something unattainable to the people in her hometown. From the MC's previews life conditions, do you expect MC to act otherwise? You don't expect someone that's basically at the bottom of the pyramid to magically have enough confidence to face someone of such level from the start, right?

Ruochun is not like those one in a million MC that goes against normalcy. She's just a normal unremarkable character but, in every thing that she lacks, she compensates with hard work. <<less

I'm a reader who loves character growth, and this really doesn't disappoint. The MC and ML still have their faults, but they manage to become better people and my words just aren't good enough to describe it. I particularly love the MC's growth in her school days. The characters, even side ones are very memorable, and most are relevant to the plot as in they actually play a role in the story. There aren't many definitive character roles like villain or mob, but they all leave an impression.

Honestly, while reading... more>> this novel, I have thought about places where some changes might have made the plot more impactful: (large spoiler)

such as Li Wei's death (it felt more empty reading that scene, like your brain hasn't completely loaded yet)

The author has mentioned this before, that they could have changed some scenes but they didn't. Despite this, the novel manages to bring out a good plot progression, maybe with even better storylines and pacing than other novels that makes their scenes more dramatic. It captures your interest while still not being too over the top or boring. Just right. I think if there was a parallel world this novel had more 'impactful' scenes, I would still prefer this version of it.

That being said, the angst??? I was not prepared for that. I just... yeah. I love angst, but even this was a bit too much for me. Or was it? In the end I still finished and love this novel. It's fluff and angst all together in one bundle. I just love how the author manages to fit a lot of things into the novel without it being "too much", if you get what I mean. Maybe you don't, but that's okay, I just really like it. My words aren't really loading today, so this review might sound a little bit weird, but I really recommend reading this. <<less

I rarely take the time to write reviews, but this Novel deserves all the praises.

I read so many stories like this where poor smart girl falls in love with smart and rich male lead, but somehow this one hits differently.

Things I loved:

  • ML was not the typical abstinent smart handsome guy. He had a girlfriend, his parents love him but didn't spoil (?) him, he's arrogant but he's not OP. Like he fails classes because he's just so busy with the things he's passionate about. Like he's the time that would have gotten expelled if it weren't for all the awards he won for the school.
  • FL is smart, hardworking, and had a really good personality but she was soooo insecure. While her insecurities caused many of their arguments, it gave her the push and direction to figure out her goals in life. Also I was delighted to find out that she was from a different ethnic group and spoke a different dialect from everyone else.
  • Their arguments are so real. They are both smart and logical, but the way they argue highlights how different their upbringing was and also were reminded that at the end of the day, they are still teenagers/young adults.
  • No annoying villain (well maybe 2-3 insignificant characters) but basically no jealous exes, fake friends, etc.
Overall the author is great... more>> at writing and her characters feel so real. If you are a fan of college campus novels I totally recommen this one! =) <<less

Well, the reason for my low review at such an early stage (only Ch15) and my dropping this novel is entirely on failure to notice the low self esteem of MC at the beginning (it comes off as non-malicious jealousy instead), her few frustrations on academic studies (as she compares herself to the ML mostly) and I am TIRED of reading about the ML every other second.

It may end up as a decent read later on but the early imbalance is throwing me off.

Did Jiu Yue Xi made me cry again? YES. Did I regret it? DEFINITELY NO. This author is definitely one of my favorites. Like all of her other stories, Rou Chun and Jing Ming is definitely a great read.

The dreams, passion and the vigor of youth, love, failures, loss, and the long journey to success were all told in this book. I just love how everything were put together but what I love the most is that how the charcters, especially Jing Ming, have grown up and developed but... more>> they never lost their core. Jing Ming never lost his arrogance and it was really great because he wouldn't be Jing Ming if he wasn't. <<less

WHAT A JOURNEY!!!! The character development brooo. The plot, the pace. Definitely recommend this story if you wanted to read something meaningful but not too heavy. The ML is jerk at first, I dont really like him in early part of the story but you'll gradually like him at the end. AND OUR FL is such a gem, her growth, personality. Definitely 5/5

The sweetness of love will make people forgive the bitterness of life.

I'm inlove with the author. All her works are amazing. To whoever is procrastinating, this is your sign. Read this now.

I also fell for Du Ruo. The girl can say NO. When he slowly approached, she said "No". When he tried poaching her, "No" was also her answer. When he confessed, her response was still "No". And it was so fulfilling to see ML suffer.

[collapse]

However, when they started working together, I'm always on the verge of "OMG are they gonna kiss?", "when are they gonna kiss?", "the atmosphere seems to be good for kissing". Yet, when they had their first kiss, it was mind blowing.

Spoiler

and then, they became too shiny, awesome and too outstanding that it gives me a bad premonition. So though I was expecting that something will happen, still his death shocked me. That inexplicable feeling when FL said, "can you visit her in her dreams, and tell her to be happy"

[collapse]

This is not your ordinary unrequited or university lovestory. It's totally different from the unrequited love we usually read. I can't really put in words how and why, I guess you gotta help me with that. Please read and do tell me.

Am I sick for shipping the two robots? No, right? Just a little weird right?

For a long time now, I've been thinking of a similar novel so I can add something on that blank and lonely recommendation tab but until now, I didn't find any. Thats how different this novel is. Believe me, I've read my fair share of novels, but Jingming's and Chun'er's story is unique. It's dreamy but angsty. It's even better than Waiting for you in a city, no matter how I love Song Yan (and Yangyang), I strongly believe, this is better!

Breakin' point was even added on my song list because of Jing Ming <<less

It is an excellent book, with excellent characters, great plot line aand an unexpected tragedy in the middle as expected of the author. Highly recommended.

Its just that I feel like some characters had much depth to them but since they were not the main leads so were not given a stretched story,

    • like Yun kai (i guess his name was, the leader of orbit, had a mysterious character and was not very expressive also seems to have feelings for FL but it isn't written or explained in the novel)
    • Also Xio Nan (Fl's room mate and friend, had a extra story at the end, SEEMs to have a crush or secret admiration for the ML but still, not given much focus)
    • Also Li Wei you will be missed.
