This story isn’t the best but it’s good enough to keep me reading it until the end.

I liked our MC and ML together. I felt like they complete each other. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if our MC was top or bottom since they both were tops

Spoiler

MC is the top

[collapse]

I don’t believe in the love at the first sight that’s why I don’t like novels which have this blot. In this story, I believe the ML didn’t love our MC at the first sight. Just like what the ML best friend said. He said the ML who has everything met the MC who had nothing and was attracted by his behavior despite his circumstances then little by little he was really moved. After that, he was really in love. He said the MC appeared at the right time and left at the right time that’s why he was the winner.

I agree with him very much. Everything is about the right time. Just like those stories when the MC comes to the novel then everything change even the original ML won’t love the original FL because she didn’t appear at the right time like in the original story. <<less

Frankly, I read and translated this story because it's written by Song Yang, whom I love his/her way of storytelling. Moreover, the story has a gong protagonist, which is rarely translated in NU so far.

Now, for the review, let me start with the synopsis. Actually, I think the synopsis has pretty much already described the premise of this story. In a world where you can't choose to be born from and had to mingle with those old family bloodlines as a means to be successful in your business and avenge... more>> your dead parents, Zheng Jue was brought into this situation. Unfortunately, it didn't end up well in his first life, and so, he experienced rebirth for some reason.

In his rebirth, ZJ, who remembered all the betrayals and unjust ending of his previous life, became traumatized from it. Meanwhile, Han Jin came in again in his life, who was one of the perpetrators of his downfall in his previous life, was mysteriously very assertive on his approach against ZJ. This is where the drama came in. After all, who was anyone sane enough to entrust themselves to a person who has harmed them? Much more to love them?

Spoiler

However, despite this, ZJ was forced to resort on cooperating with HJ, along with Zhou Chengan, HJ's best friend and also one of the perpetrators, because it was the only way to serve his revenge in the most realistic and fastest way possible to Wen Huaan, the one who killed his father and him (?) in his previous life. This is the reason why ZJ and HJ would have more interactions even if ZJ didn't want to.

[collapse]

Even in a free world, how would you fare in a world when you have to clearly know your place and have to humble yourself in front of the people with good pedigrees?

ZJ is not dumb. In fact, he knows himself very well and that's why he's also very assertive in his goals. He hates being ordered by someone, so he wants to be at the top. For this, he even endured his trauma just to achieve it. I think this part of him is one of his qualities that amazed me.

As for the romance, it was very slow burn and angsty, yet with a very high R18 tension.

For the plot, actually, I agree with Shortk to the part that the plan to their revenge wasn't that much elaborated in this story. At the very least, if I remember correctly, the story is more focused on the development of ZJ's and HJ's relationship with their work as the subplot. But since this wasn't a slice-of-life genre, I guess this lackluster of details should already be justified. For future readers who are finding a hard-core plot, it might be better for you to try reading some part of the story first before deciding if this is a cup of your tea or not.

There are also scenes which are very funny for me such as:

Spoiler

Car accident, kidnapping and black room scenes. This happened after ZJ ran away from HJ because of HJ's dad's threat, while HJ was comatose because of the car accident. Pretty much to say, HJ almost became crazy when he learned that ZJ left him. When HJ finally kidnapped him, ZJ woke up chained to a bed... Haha.

[collapse]

For the ending:

Spoiler

It's a HE!

[collapse]

Ultimately, it was actually HJ's POV in the side story that makes me want to read the story again. In his perspective, it was revealed how he and ZC contributed to the downfall of Zheng Jue just to defeat Wen Huaan. It was only at this moment that I truly understood the trauma ZJ had during the early moments of his rebirth. <<less

This book was written in 2016 & it f*ckin shows man... The author writes in a note: "I have a lot of bad tastes and blackening is one of them. I'm glad y'all enjoy my bad taste too." I share this to explain that I do not have bad taste and thus this is not my taste. Just my perspective and you can take it with a grain of salt bc I skimmed at times:

The pros are the romance as it is as compelling as dogblood romances usually are even... more>> if you know everything that'll happen and you don't even like it. Despite the minimum amount of dialogue between the leads, the author still managed to create a sense of chemistry in the relationship. The other pro is I guess a sense of realism on how ruthless and a**holery rich people are (including both leads & other characters).

The cons are the business workings are never written in detail after the beginning part of the novel and beyond the "revenge plan". The writing is more telling than showing. This a fact. Don't fight me. Just reread it lol and try to point out how many events are just given a sentence or paragraph. The conflicts don't feel that big of a deal. The dogblood isn't even inventive. Just predictable and feels like it was written in just bc the author likes it. No one's business is written in detail tbh. The romance is compelling enough but also boring bc of the predictable dogblood to me. It's like I have the map of the maze and I'm just reading to see how they react when they get to the end.

The MC is a hardworking person (although we barely see his work in detail after the movie) who has baggage that will create dogblood with the ML who is an arrogant low EQ, high business IQ (they never show it, it just say they have a business convo and it's so intelligent of him yadada) son of god characters - prince vibe but also wolf dog yandere. The writing is for pure entertainment. It's really giving early 2010s toxic ya romance novels. <<less

The story is really good but the last chapter is very uncomfortable to read as it tells about the past life.

The ML, Han Jin is really cruel and our MC is just a cannon fodder. Hanjin and his friend Zhou chengan knew that Zheng Sheng is innocent but instead of warning him. They harmed him to get back to Wen. 😅

Aside from that the ML, also used the MC to get his feelings regardless of the danger that MC might get into.

The MC also did something wrong at the... more>> beginning, he did only kept his plan in the beginning to ML which is understandable. No harm will be happen to ML nor his friends. <<less

This novel has abit of a gritty taste. For mature/adult audiences, I think you have to just enjoy some darker traits and tropes and not think too hard about it. Anyways I really enjoyed it, I think this is an excellent novel up to the part where he got into a car accident, then it was weird to see them fumble the ball with sudden inconsistencies with characterizations/character settings (afterwards) that put me off the novel a little, it made it a lot weaker. I just thought it was a... more>> bit ridiculous, maybe something was going on behind the scene. Otherwise I did enjoy the former half of the novel alot.

There's plenty of intrigue and there's a feeling of things being abit smoky, you can't trust alot of people. It's quite novel to read and I enjoyed how it's layered it with maneuvering social etiquettes and business politics. The casts are interesting, but again - for some reason once they started putting the dad in more -- their character setting starts flailing and it made me so ??? something was going on. Also for me, the incompatibility of the MC and ML is a glaring obvious obstacle to their dynamic/romance. But I did enjoy it in a sick twisted way when he was later imprisoned, even though I can acknowledge that they have like, 0 compatibility with each other lol.

But that's what I mean by enjoying stuff without thinking too hard!!! I think if you're looking for wholesome and normal, you might not like this novel... (Also I recommend reading the raws)

The ending (extra, past life) chapter is my favourite. It was written very well. I thoroughly enjoyed it! <<less

I liked this novel specially the couple dynamic, it did have some "rich family drama" troops, but they were well written by the author.

I like the way the characters are not so generic and they are likeable. ML love for MC reminded me of something someone close to me told me just a few days before: "Sometimes I feel my boyfriends love for me and it scares me, I'm not used to feeling such passion it makes me feel safe and scared."

I feel that's a bit of ML and MC's... more>> dynamic, ML is a very dedicated person, because of his life experience he goes "all or nothing" in romantic relationship, either keeping them on surface level or getting too deep intl them like with MC

MC is in denial, on other hand, he's hurt because of his previous romantic experience and is still trying to heal his insecurities and solve his resentment.

MC and ML meet in a critical point in both of their lives, they get entangled with one an other in a complicated way and time, making both hesitant and insecure.

The plot is not bad, it had it dogblood moments at times, specially in the later chapters, but it was engaging.

I liked to see MC's growth in business and his professional field, since it was something he really desired in his past life and ML's maturing.

I think this one story is good to give it a try if you want a not so heavy but not silly story to read.

It has a good amount of plot, romance and dogbloodyness <<less

Beyond my opinion that neither the MC or the ML have inherently likeable personalities, there is little compatibility between the MC and the ML. The dialogue is stilted, awkward, melodramatic, and often nonsensical. I have no ability to determine if this is because of the translation, or just the tendencies of the original author.

Whichever the case may be, these two facets of the novel form an unconvincing and demotivating romance. I got off the bus at station 23.

This is quite a middle of the road type of novel but I just really really like gong MC so I add another star. I use MTL but it's not too difficult to understand. Their emotional entanglement come quiet abruptly and violently from the shou side but I like it so if that's not yours it will be a demerit. Also, the business fighting has some thought in it, but not too much thought so it's not too perfunctory and also not too slogging.

Good plot. The relationship progress is very detailed. The cause and effect of every interaction is clear and reasonable. Every character has their own personality.

For me, the MC and ML do not have many good qualities but the author wrote in a way that these two are a natural pair. I am a little dissatisfied with how the author portrayed the change in feelings. It felt like love at first sight even though it is not. I just felt that there was no indication that they were moved or touched.... more>> I felt that their feelings for each other was not enough for what ML did during the
