This is a story about a graduate student of ancient Chinese who was repeatedly trampled on the road to employment, and returned to the middle of the Ming Dynasty and entered the body of a young child in a mountain village. There are many disputes in the farmyard With a dull father, a fierce mother, and a group of extremely bad relatives. Fortunately, we have thousands of years of historical accumulation, the Four Books and Five Classics, and the Eight-part Essays, and the majors are also suitable. Who says that it is difficult for a poor family to produce a noble son? The national strength has risen, and the rule of law has been relaxed; the law and discipline are lax, and the official discipline is lazy; there are a few treacherous ministers, and there are also some Japanese pirates; but overall, it can be said that this is a fertile ground for the free growth of scholars and officials. A legend of the rise of a poor family also grew from here

This novel is an extremely unusual experience. On the one hand, the atmosphere of powerlessness, pressure, and humiliation is vividly conveyed here, as if the story itself seeks to test the reader's patience. If you have ever felt unfairly belittled or faced constant neglect, here you will recognize these emotions in every action.

Almost every character around the main character is the epitome of hostility, condescension, and ridicule. The author seems to deliberately create an environment where the hero is an object for ridicule, attacks and manipulation, and he almost never... more>> resists. This causes a deep sense of frustration, because we are used to seeing at least growth or a desire to change the situation in the main character.

Many storylines are based on typical, often recurring patterns: abusive relatives, the indifference of others, a complete lack of support, and all this with no apparent hope of change. At some point, the reader may begin to feel emotionally tired, because the book does not give the slightest respite or positive emotional release.

Some characters are particularly annoying — not because they are deeply researched, but because they seem to be specially written to evoke negativity. And at the same time, it is these characters who receive the greatest plot "reward", which only increases the feeling of injustice and internal conflict.

If you're reading for catharsis, growth, self-mastery, or peace, you won't find it here. This work is like a prolonged storm in which there is no glimmer of the sun. Perhaps the author wanted to convey realism in this way, but the result was depressing.

And, perhaps, the main thing is the main character. He is passive, devoid of will, constantly gives up and accepts what is happening without the slightest resistance. This can cause strong rejection, because it is very difficult to sympathize with a hero who does not respect himself.

The book is suitable for those who want to experience the full range of negative emotions from the plot. For me personally, this experience turned out to be rather disappointing and emotionally draining. <<less

Wow. I dont even know what to say! Ive been reading webnovels for a long time and although I dare not say ive read thousands it wouldnt be an exaggeration to say its in the 3 digits. More so historical novels are quite literally my soul haha.

This novel is very different and standalone, first of all lets start with the MC Zhu pingan whose a normal chinese literaure major that died and woke up as a child of a peasant farmer in the ming dynasty during the reign of Emperor... more>> jiajing (Hes an actualy emperor alot of the things in this novel are historically accurate except for the butterfly effects, and some side characters...) He has no choice but to study in this era where only studying was admired and all other proffessions were lowly.

He has a fierce village mother and dull honest father and elder brother plus a scheming uncle (I almost died laughing becuase of this uncles beautiful brain circuits lmao0) and some aunts and grandpaents. He was accepted by the village scholar master Sun after he was caught listening to the lectures at the village school while herding. Blah, blah, eventually he meets the village rich brat Li shu (Shes actually the daughter of a concubine son of a marquis family) Shes the standard annoying tsundere, Tbh I wanted to give her a few tight slaps whenver I saw her in the begining but she evolves.

Anyway he studies Yada yada yada becomes top scholar marries Li shu albeit unwillingly (theres a reason...) Also I dont know if you know Yan song a trearous minster during that era irl but him and his son make things difficult for MC try to kill him yada yada yada.

Hehe, the cannon fodder in this novel are very annoying tbh I really want to give them a few tight slaps..... But whenever they get face slapped its satisfying lmao.

Overall this nvel is still ongoing but its already stolen my soul haha. Its potrayl of an emperor is also very cool. The emperor is actually one of historically genuis emperors but due to his obession with immortality the court and people suffer. Anyway its cool yall should read, btw romance is 1v1 but idk if itll stay that way...... <<less

I like the story a lot, the MC and many side characters are interesting. The presentation of the imperial examination system is also quite fascinating.

The only bad part was a couple chapters where the MC encounters bandits, including a female martial artist. It felt like the story randomly turned into a Wuxia for 2 chapters despite otherwise seeming to be relatively grounded historical fiction.

I completely don't understand the negative reviews talking about the MC being a doormat or powerless. If anything, I feel like the novel has trended a little... more>> too close to Xianxia faceslapping tropes at times. The MC is just usually polite and proves critics wrong through his actions rather than cursing people out or scheming. <<less

It's a story of very diligent poor person raising to greatness by intelligence and hard work, contrast with other small minded supporting characters who are spoiled, lazy, irresponsible, and more.

The main story part is OK, but this is perhaps one of the most frustrating doormat of an MC I ever read.

The first female friend/love interest is a spoiled and cruel brat, which MC somehow continue to interact with despite the constant disrespect and insults. (She is rich AF and the original source of various resources for MC though, like good... more>> food and book collection, so there's that)

The second was a thief who robbed and kidnapped MC and being an absolute jerk all the way. Put a knife to MC's neck twice. Who then MC took a great risk to save her life, wasted a sh*t ton of wealth on her prank (like, enough wealth for a whole group of imperial examinees), and suffered constant teasing and mockery.

Then there are prostit**es who teased MC for being a poor kid, then get upset because MC wanted nothing to do with them, then begged for MC poems and songs to raise their reputation which MC readily gave because he is too kind.

For male side, his relative and fellow villagers looked down on him and tried to exploit him all the way. Though MC treated them a bit more reasonable by distancing himself and tried to have nothing to do with them.

Look, I'm not the type to sing praise for edgy cruel MC, or calling everyone beta cuck. But... Just walk away dude. Left them dry. Being the good guy who always forgive and help everyone who looked down on him, slinging insults, or even cause major losses is just... Too much. <<less

One of the best historical novels I have ever read, on par with Holy Roman Empire and The Mad Tycoon of Rome. The story so far is split into 4 arcs: Childhood, examination, capital, military. I would only touch on the childhood arc on the first part of the review as the rest is spoilers.

The childhood arc describes Zhu Ping’An, a countryside boy and his life in the countryside. It describes vividly both the hardships of farming communities at the time as well as introducing the main female protagonist which... more>> is Li Shu. She would be the main one supporting Zhu Ping’An throughout the whole series although for now she isn’t very likeable and that is very good reason. The vivid encounters between Zhu Ping’An and his family, the preference towards the first born son even when he is unreasonable and the scholarly lessons of the Old Master all encapsulates the experience of living in the Ming Dynasty in a rural village. Although the Ming Dynasty hasn’t yet collapsed, the greedy officials have begun to appear in the form loan sharks who broke Zhu Ping’An’s father’s legs. This shows foreshadowing for the later plot of the novel and further entails the hardships of the people living during the Ming Dynasty. His supernatural abilities as a transmigrator would show up at this point too and while it doesn’t play too big of a role during this period, it serves as a bedrock for the later arcs of the novel.

Spoiler

The examination arc describes Zhu Ping’An examinations, the examination process, the questions, the experiences, the thoughts and feelings of those taking the imperial examination. Zhu Ping’An would naturally face more dangers here. For example, he was captured by a female bandit, Ruo Nan, archetypical of the robin hood figure but different in gender. He also meets with temptations in the form of brothels on the other side of the river, which his uncle and uncle’s friends immediately fall into. This marks a drastic contrast between Zhu Ping’An and other examination takers, which would cause their downfall and would be the final remarks of this arc on how lust, greed corrupts the original good fortune of people into evil. Although I personally do not agree with luck and fortune being something that is tangible (but rather a combination of natural causes and God’s plan for you), the lesson drawn from it is especially important as these influences would seep into your soul and make you unable to get out of the quagmire of desire. I especially love the classical chinese questions posed during the exam and how the eight-legged essay is written. The simple one sentence that explains the whole essay and the question is truly interesting.

[collapse]

The next few parts are on the capital politics and war. I do suggest to read the earlier parts first rather than skipping to the real interesting parts in the later chapters as it forms the foundations and understanding of Zhu Ping’An and Li Shu as a character. If you like the historical genre at all, or even some political intrigue, I heavily recommend reading this novel! (P.S if you can’t wait for the actual translation or can read chinese like me, you can use AI to translate the raw text for you) <<less

This has turned out to be one of my favorite novels of all time.

Spoiler

As the name suggests the story is about the rise of a poor person to prominence, it's a historical novel situated in the Ming dynasty and has a lot to do with officialdom. What I found interesting was how the MC used his average modern knowledge (mostly) and strategic thinking to handle all the challenges he faced in a very realistic manner (in my opinion). The MC is very hardworking and while he has a cheat, it isn't that exaggerated or reliable so there is very little sense of getting things on a silver platter.

I remember the first 30 or so chapters, I was tempted to drop it a few times because the way he was treated by his extended family was so annoying, but I am so glad I didn't as it only got better as it went on. For me this is without a doubt the best book of it's genre.

Also, the tsundere heroine had a very strong tsun at the beginning so she may not be to everyone's liking but personally, I really enjoyed the interactions between her and the MC.

[collapse]

If you'r looking for something to read, I totally recommend it if you like this genre. <<less
