5/5 stars.

Reverend Insanity, to put the old trope to use, is not like other books. And I will warn you now. If you don't feel comfortable about death, killing and gore, this book might not be for you.

R.I is a book that progressively gets better every arc. The world-building, the depth, the plot, all of it is interconnected in ways us, the reader, fail to understand until the very last paragraph upon which we are mindblown. Mindblown not just because of the plot twist, but by how much sense it... more>> makes. It possesses both shock factor and logic, something fairly rare in most books.

The low ratings on this novel are mostly people who havent read even the first two arcs, and are turned off by the mc's ruthlessness. Such reviews dictating reasonable and valid points as to why the novel isn't a literary masterpiece are rare. Fang Yuan, our MC, is I have to say, one of my favourite main characters of alll time. Various people call "evil for the sake of being evil" but I would have to disagree. Fang Yuan is pragmatic to a severe degree. To him, there is no right, wrong, righteous, demonic, there is only building blocks on which for him to step on. For benefits, he would drop moral principles, pride, anything. F.Y is not an MC you are meant to root for. You are meant to admire him. Would I want to be around him irl? God no. But you can still respect his accomplishments and feats.

As someone who has read to the current translations (around 2180) this is a terrific book. Its plots are intricate and detailed (minus a few plotholes in early arcs), and the world building is unique. Every word, every sentence has meaning. <<less

Top tier.

The author has given me a story that I've always craved, a smart ruthless MC whom will do whatever they needs in order to achieve their aim of true Immortality in a world with an unexpectedly sophisticated cultivation system.

NO dumb harems. (Harem's don't make you immortal)

... more>> NO dumb anti hero moments where you see the MC is really a good guy deep down. (Getting involved in other people's sh*t for no benefit doesn't make you immortal)

NO dumb justification of the MC's actions to show that his harsh actions were somehow not his fault. (When Fang Yuan decides to kill, right and wrong have very little to do with it, all that matters is will it benefit him in becoming immortal)

All hail Fang Yuan, the unparalleled great Demon. <<less

4.5/5, mostly because it is hard for beginners to get into due to it's depth (and some of the philosophy which I greatly appreciate), web novel wordy and explorative nature, slow pace, and build-up which drops lots of hints and subtlety that needs to be noticed to enjoy the novel so. You need patience and being able to appreciate the small things the story has to offer and having a distinct style from most of web novels.

This was my first ever entry into Xianxia, and I'm glad it was because... more>> it had made me totally fall in love with eastern genres in general. This is a slow-burn, deep foundation, climax-rewarding story. Has an expansive world-building, unique cultivation system and it's lore-filled power system, fighting that had me right from the start which in my opinion could match the greatest Shounen comics, and seamless blending of fictional elements. All characters are believable and very fleshed out with some of them even compelling enough to become protagonists of their own story, which just makes it easier to be immersed to. The build-up and conclusion of the first few arcs are so f*cking amazing. But there is one factor that either makes you want to read the novel or quit, which is the protagonist.

There are some learning moments and changes in the journey, but the essence of his being is unbending. You will see why that is as his deep and solemn backstory gets unraveled in bits and pieces. It will show his other sides and who he once was before he became the iconic person we know of. He is amoral, selfish, ruthless to his enemies and he can especially be unimaginably cruel to even himself. A total indifference to worldly desires and a steel-like persistence; he treads in a bloody path without succumbing to any expectations, readily sacrificing anything when he has to regardless if any cost and his life and death.

Calling him a villain is too conventional: for me he is a vicious, unfazed, tyrant, redefining the definition of the concept of what it means to be a demon. He can feel satisfaction from his efforts and some mild human emotions, but he does not not lust and love, he doesn't oppress or harm because he is authority-hungry, and he will not be petty for the sake of it, but he would always exceeds your expectations in his utter callousness to any form of life as he strives towards his ultimate goal of immortality while eliminating every obstacle in his path. He has no regard towards authority and has even the gall to become an infamous enemy of good and oppose the heavens itself. Really a recommend from me but it is currently hiatus at 2335 chapters because of a ban, and might only get continued a one to three years later. I think that should no let that stop you from trying to see if you'd enjoy it because it has one of the absolutely best writing among web novels.

Hands down the best LN I've read!

The MC isn't OP... he isn't an a**hole... he isn't arrogant... he doesn't have double standards (you can provoke others but others can't provoke you kinda nonsense)... there are no dues ex machinas... and the foreshadowing is legit amazing.

The one and only downside to this great novel, is that for reasons known only to themselves, China banned the novel. So we've been waiting for more than one year for the ban to be lifted 😭

Currently at chapter 60, I'm probably not in a position to give a proper review, but so far I am not impressed with the novel.

Its your typical cultivation novel. Most characters are two dimensional and cliche, have exaggerated emotions, reactions, and are hot headed. Servants treat their masters like gods, and masters treat them like s*aves. People only interact in two ways, treat superiors like gods, and treat people inferior to them like garbage. A society is unable, and would not function like this. Also the dialog is super stiff... more>> and inhumane, although it might be that it didn't translate well to english. I don't know if the novel gets any better, and with all these 5 stars reviews id be surprised if it didn't. But so far the author's writing is just immature. I have no idea why people are claiming the characters are "realistic" and good, they are far from it. Again maybe I just haven't reached the good part.

After reading some reviews describing the horrible sh*t this MC does, it has crossed my bottom line and I don't want to continue wasting my time. Dropped. <<less

I can’t believe I read this until 800 chapters. Someone suggested this to me and told me this is interesting. I admit the MC is unique, and the villains are not dumb. But as I read through the novel, i’m unable to use my reading style. Whenever I read a novel I always place myself in the perspective of the characters to understand them better and immerse myself in that world. This allows me to enjoy the novel. But I just can’t do it with this MC. He’s too bland... more>> and whenever I place myself in his perspective, I have to think like a machine and kill off my emotions, thereby rendering immersion useless. From chapter 100 above I have to read this novel as if im reading a speech just to force myself to continue reading.

On the other hand, I can see their world from the Mc’s victims’ perspective just fine... too bad there is always a mix of despair in their colors. After reading a few chapters, my head will always feel heavy.

One thing I dont like about this novel is the lack of effective foreshadowing. You can just skim through this novel just fine without taking note of key points, and you still wont get lost. Whenever I read a novel, I usually take note of important points like some characters, places, objects, and situations mentioned slightly but might become important later. Unfortunately, there is nothing to take note of in the early chapters, which is supposed to contain a lot of world building and foreshadowing. On rare occasions that a chapter contains such things, you would only need to look back a few chapters. I literally read this for 3 days straight and when I reached 500s I skimmed through a lot of chapters, skipped a lot of dialogues/monologues, and checked for key points to see if there is a need to read deeply.

Probably one of the reasons why I gave this a low rating is my high expectation for this novel since a lot of reviews mentioned that this novel has good world building. Anyway, my review is mostly subjective so I highly doubt this will be useful. <<less

Maybe I'm purposely being a bit contrarian here by intentionally rating the novel as merely 4 stars rather than 5, but I think that it's justified. Don't get me wrong, this novel is good; as a matter of fact, it's very good. But it's not the literal word of God or next revelation of the Buddha that some rabid fans take it to be. They've spawned such a cult of supremacy around the novel that it's simply absurd. The novel is amongst the best of all CN webnovels, the crème... more>> de la crème that the market has produced, but it falls far short of western literary masterpieces like Lord of the Rings and the like. But I digress, for what it is, it is good, and I'll move on to what actually makes the novel good.

One of the first things that immediately jump out is the world-building, the author has meticulously crafted a stable, functioning universe that has actual explanations for phenomena and events (as well apparently keeping track of a huge backlog of notes). The cultivation system is perhaps the most unique of all Xianxia I've ever read, and the concept of "Gu" has not even appeared in any other literary work to my knowledge. The author also has an incredibly keen eye for detail as many minor events and not much is glossed over or prone to have plot holes cracked into them. Characters are multi-faceted and have actual reasons and motivations for doing things, rather than just to tide the plot along. More than just a personality, nearly all characters, no matter how minor they may be, possess the incredibly rare ability of CRITIAL THINKING and will act logically as situations develop. They will not, for example, decide to level an entire region because young master #39's fragile ego was punctured. They will however, commit genocide upon an entire race if it provided tangible benefits and reason for doing so.

Unfortunately, this is actually my first real gripe with the story, many a character are almost TOO rational. They've diverged from being humans (or maybe immortal humans) to android cultivators who disregard basically all morals and emotions and only plot mercilessly for their own benefit. Such a mindset is totally fine for our protagonist Fang Yuan to have, because he has valid justification for it and it proves to be an interesting viewpoint to discern things through, but when "forgettable side-character #98 of the righteous path" suddenly becomes an uber-rational cultivation machine that is willing to compromise with mass mu*derers and sociopaths for the skimpiest of benefits, things begin to teeter into the realm of the unrealistic. The novel as a whole has an incredibly Machiavellian, "dog eat dog world" tone as a result where everyone is just waiting to kill and backstab each other, suppressing their homicidal tendencies under the thinnest of veneers. The author is really trying to drive home the point that humans are inherently selfish and self-serving, which very well may be true, but he does it in such a way that the characters are not even human anymore.

Besides this flaw, the rest of the novel is basically impeccable for a CN webnovel. It's engrossing, entertaining, and doesn't insult your intelligence with contrived scenarios and superfluous situations. The author also doesn't drown you in racist, sexist and sinocentric rhetoric, which is a nice change of pace from many CN webnovels. Fang Yuan sticks to what he does best, being a devious and scheming force of sheer evil that runs amok sewing chaos and destruction in the world but also restraining himself if necessary. Fang Yuan does not become an hypocritical posturing altruist who mol*sts women he's saved and preaches for righteousness. I'll be the first to admit that I have a soft-spot for such villainous protagonists and Fang Yuan rubs that itch just well.

This is a 4.9/5 novel and I highly recommend such a story to people who can stomach the unfiltered villainy and raw amorality of Fang Yuan. <<less

Someone said to me that this novel can challenge LOTM so I read but I don't know on which basis he said that. Despite living 500+ years he don't seems to have any development. Then genre about him being a anti-hero is false he's full fledge villain and not a likeble one.

The power system, I don't know what to say about this where u have to catch small Pokemon which are called gu and cultivate them so they'll help you cultivation. And I refuse to belive that there aren't any... more>> other solution to become powerful.

The thing that annoys me most is the power system. <<less

The very premise of the novel is kill or be killed. In the beginning itself, the author prepares the readers for the brutal world he is creating through the means of cultivation style. Gu – creatures with their own will – are deprived of their will and refined by cultivators for their own benefits. As the novel goes on, the cruelty of the world is showcased. Even animals are not spared of their innocence.

If you are expecting any form of kindness from the MC, do not read this novel. Strength... more>> is everything. Without it, you are just a fodder for those stronger than you. This statement embodies the nature of the novel.

Various ideologies are introduced in the first volume to establish and justify MC’s demonic nature. The world is filled with Rules and Regulations. To deny them is to turn demonic. To follow them is to be moralistic. By slowly introducing these philosophies, it becomes easier for the readers to accept the anti-hero of the novel.

Along with these beliefs, the origin of the mankind is also introduced through a legend. Legends are stories with some truth in them. These legends play a vital role in solidifying the world setting and background of many characters.

Although the characters seem extremely shallow in the beginning, as MC’s strength rises, more and more schemes and conspiracies are unveiled. The fighting scenes are well portrayed but it does not boil the blood of the readers. This is partially due to MC continuously emphasising on the fact that only fools would sacrifice themselves for others. Any hot-bloodedness that the readers could enjoy is taken away; only viciousness is left behind.

Towards the end of the first Volume, MC has already battled three formidable opponents and turned his nemesis into his ally. Of the three, one has escaped and even grasped a way to locate MC in the future.

It ends with MC finally leaving a trail filled with the blood of his own clansmen and leaving the Qing Mo Mountain to travel the world. His adventures have just begun and there are more brutalities to follow.

This is a true blooded cultivation books. Its sole focus is the violent path of cultivation and the journey of this anti-hero. It is highly recommended for readers who love to read cultivation novels but despise romance, friendship and other distractions on the cultivation path. <<less

An excellent read. A very rare concept with the MC being an unapologetic villain. MC wants to live forever and will go to any length to achieve this goal. If he needs children as material to create an item, then he'll throw living children into forge fire without hesitation or remorse.

He doesn't do evil for evil's sake though, he isn't a sadist. If you're more useful to him living than dead, then he might go to great length to save your life. He may even put himself at risk to... more>> save you from a danger he manufactured in the first place (thus earning your gratitude and goodwill). However, even if you've been "friends" with him for years, he'll kill you the second you've become more useful to him dead than alive.

Even though Fang Yuan is such a bastard, we can't help but root for him. I think the reason is that, like a hero, he goes against incredible odds without flinching. When the entire world is against him, when he's at the lowest of lows, he'll stand back up and find a way.

It's not just the MC. The world building in this novel is great and sells you a very vivid universe, with different characters, regions and cultures that are all really interesting. The power system is also really well made, with well defined rules and specificities. Every Gu (and combinations of gus) have their advantage and drawbacks. It makes the fights really interesting and strategic.

Speaking of strategy, Fang Yuan is smart and cunning. This isn't like many novels where you would be told just how intelligent the MC is. No, here, the MC actually make plans that are smart and make sense and with fail safes. He takes measured risks, of course he does take some tremendous risks from time to time, but only when he expects to gain a lot, and he does take precautions in case things don't go as planned - which they sometime do, either because his information was incorrect or an unlucky event - and he then shows his incredible ability to think on his feet and salvage a terrible situation. He doesn't hesitate to scrap a plan if he has to.

Spoiler

For example, he spent a lot of time and effort being friendly to someone. Then that person learned something they shouldn't have and it would be dangerous for the MC. That person didn't have the time to realize the implication of what they had learned before their head was separated from their body.

[collapse]

I like that you don't get the impression the MC has a plot armor. Things do go wrong and you really get the impression that he manages to survive and get on top through his cunning.

Spoiler

Actually there is a character that has got a plot armor, but this is satire. Fang Zheng is the MC's twin brother and he would be the protagonist in any other novel.

Fang Zheng, as a protagonist, would yell his misguided righteousness at his brother (who couldn't give less of a shit). Fang Zheng does have a plot armor and survive for contrived reasons when he should have died, and he even gets an immortal to notice him and become his teacher.

Fang Zheng is 'fated' to grow and oppose his nemesis of a brother. But this would be Fang Zheng story and this novel isn't that. Nothing Fang Zheng ever does matters or have any consequences. His existence do not matter in the slightest for our MC.

Don't worry, this character doesn't take much focus in the novel. The author doesn't give too much time to this inconsequential character.

What differenciates Reverend Insanity with other reincarnator themed novels is other novels portray the MC as someone as omnipotent like and everything goes as planned by the MC. This novel however deviates from that norm and show as that even with so much knowledge from the past and heaven defying item, it isnt smooth sailing. Another good point of this novel is the MC is not hypocrite. He's plain evil with only his interest in his mind not like other MCs which are bullies but dont want to get bullied.... more>> The only thing that's bad side of RI is it has too many fillers. Who damn cares about Ren Zhu and his sons? The author is also like a nagging mother that keeps on repeating facts previously said already in past chapters. One of the most well-written, exciting, well-rounded novels. Great Characters, excellent plot, well developed cultivation and power system. Overall, one of the best novels out there!

Spoiler

Background: MC was a transmigrator from earth. He was a Scholar on Earth and he possessed high IQ, enough to understand philosophy, psychology and many other topics. After that, he arrived on the Gu World, where lived for ~500 years before he refined the Time Path Gu Spring Autumn Cicada and was forced to self-detonate when he was besieged. (It is hinted that the Gu world is part of a larger multi-verse as one of the 10 Rank 9 Gu Immortals originated from a world with Mechas)

Personality: Fang Yuan's moral integrity has no bottom line, as long as the benefits are large enough, he can do anything. He is extremely scheming and unscrupulous. He is not evil in the sense that he is a sad*st that enjoys killing or torturing people but he will not be hindered by morality for gains. He is immune to face, reputation, arrogance, humility, conceit. He is extremely cautious and always considers all variables when acting, but is not adverse to taking risks when the payoff is large enough. All of these were built from his past 500 years + earth experience so as of chapter 1239, there is not much character development as it is already developed off-screen. He does not fear death as long as he has tried his very best.

Cultivation: Cultivators are generally divided into ranks of 1-9 (1-5 Mortal, 6-9 Immortal) In the Gu world where mankind only existed for ~100 million years (Guess), there were only 10 Rank 9 Venerable that came out, each the strongest in their time but only had a average life-span of ~7-8 thousand years. MC's ultimate Goal is to reach Rank 10 and be truly immortal. Cultivators are dependent on Gu as they are the medium to access the laws of heaven and earth. Cultivators with no Gu are not able to exert any force.

Story: The story so far revolves around the Gu world, which consists of 5 regions (North, South, East, West, Central). MC returns to his origin point (South Region) at 16 years old, along with his Spring Autumn Cicada. At this point, he is not even a Gu Master and has low talent of Grade C (A is the Great and above A is the top 10 physiques that are high risk high reward) and has the ticking time bomb of his rank 6 Spring Autumn Cicada exerting great pressure on his not even rank 1 body. MC will use his memories of his past life along with his wits, schemes and low moral-integrity to get as much advantages as he can and try and reach rank 10.

Spoiler

Illusory concepts like luck and fate are very real and his forced detonation was forced by a hidden battle between two higher powers. Only otherworldly demons (transmigrators) are able to change fate

[collapse]

Morality: There are two groups of cultivators: Righteous Path and Demonic Path. Righteous path typically have decent moral integrity are ruled by filial piety, respect, loyalty to the organisation. Demonic path have low moral integrity, the only difference is how low. For Fang Yuan, there is no bottom-line.

Characters: There are no Grandpas, Young Master type characters. Most characters met are Shrewd, calculating but generally follow the rules. Important and side characters often have a role to play in the over-arching story line and are not mentioned for the sake of padding or to be defeated and forgotten.

Romance: None so far, MC only sees females as sacks of meat on the skeleton but it is hinted that he had some form of romance in his pre-time jump.

Best book I ever read. Please read till the end. This book is without 'flaw'.

For those who say the MC is heartless/anti-social, you are wrong. You have yet to know his whole story, specially the flashbacks from his previous life - which made him into the person he is today.

Spoiler

He would have never so selflessly loved/married Xie Hanmo if he was so 'heartless'.

A novel that does the genre justice. A great novel that makes aspiring writers feel bad about themselves. Why? Because of how well the story is done and written. The story is very complicated and the lore is done excellently. Aspiring writers of the xuanhuan genre will look to this as inspiration but will realize how far they have, once they see how good this novel really is. Other novels in this genre are written so poorly that a 12 year old kid will be inspired to write the sequel... more>> and can actually pull it off. After all, it only needs half ass plot with repetition and tr*sh harem.

Now this novel, MC is EVIL. I have read some reviews claiming the MC isnt evil his just an anti hero or stuff like that. Dont let them fool you, MC is evil and it gets hard to cheer for him at times. But you need to grow up and not insert yourself into fantasy novels. Just enjoy the story and trust the process. Your life is far better than any fantasy novel so dont bother inserting yourself into those b.s books where MC has a harem full of beauties. Anyways enough of the good talk. Once you acclimate with the MC hard to swallow actions, this novel becomes rather excellent.

My personal favourite part is how well he schemes and he truly cautious. I have read many novels where the MC says "i have to remain low key and cannot do anything that will bring attention to me, after all I just stole so and so's treasure" then if they see a woman being attacked by a group of people they dash out and save her despite it being none of their business and them solely relying on b.s plot armor to save them. This MC is truly cautious and scheming. He will not show his real appearance even to an ant when he is stepping on it. Just in case it snitches on him lol.

MC has no hypocritical moments. He doesn't do things out of character, for example, we know Fang Yuan as a heartless, cunning, sly, greedy evil man. It wouldn't make sense for him to just save a random damsel. The only way he would do that if he gained benefits from doing it. Perhaps saving that girl will take him to her clan, where he can get payed. This means MC doesnt change his nature in front of certain people. Other MC will break their back just for a smile on a pretty girls face.

Pretty much this novel doesnt have much flaws that will turn readers off and will make them drop it. My misgivings with this novel are:

Cultivating is not complicated, rather it is boring. Very boring to read. It is practically him farming materials and rearing animals, then suffering huge setbacks because of tribulations. Those chapters take a huge chunk from this novel which I seriously dislike. But I completely understand it is part of the novel.

Another thing would be the gu system is pretty hard to imagine. The worms reach a scale of hundreds of thousands, now all this inside a humans body? And if that bug leaves the human is weak again? Wow thats just disgusting for me tbh. But you get used to it and the cultivation system doesnt break your mind. Meaning you dont have to do calculations while reading. Its rather simple and convenient.

The time warping ability of one of his gu is abit broken. However it gets complete explained properly later on. I am not a fan of huge plot armor, however this is an absolute must for this story. It also gets exposed and the world knows about it. It also is nullified later on so you dont have to worry much about checkpoints in the novel.

Romance. The romance is virtuallt zero. A few girls fall head over heels for Fang yuan. In fact one of the best girls in the novel has fallen for him, yet he has no intention other than receiving huge benefits from her position. I dont mind no romance, but I do mind a man that has no lust. How can I remotely relate to a man who has no lust for women. He only sees benefits and doesnt indulge in any desires. To me it rather feels like the author is scared of writing r*pe into the novel. Like we completely understand the MC is a villain with no qualms about doing evil things. But r*pe is like one thing he would never do, for me that is just delusional. R*pe is bad, but clan wiping and child torturing is far worse than it. Why detail children being burnt alive, and be scared of writing r*pe into the novel. I am not saying this novel sucks without r*pe, im just saying: the author made it seem that his no r*pe mentality is the fianl straw of goodness within his heart. I dont like that, because the author has written r*pe into the novel but he didnt show the details. To me it seems as if he is scared of making the MC r*pe some women.

Overall, a fantastic novel that has room for growth. The story is written well and I enjoy it far more than other novels of the same genre. <<less

Time travel is in most cases an excuse for an author to power trip about being so well equipped for things with knowledge they aren't privy to. And to be honest, this work does suffer that. The "gu worms" idea is truly s*upid, but has had moments of profoundity.

As a veteran of the wuxia/xuanhuan genre, I can attest this series needs a know how, an instinct, of when to fast forward mentally to truly enjoy it.

It is filled with brutal, mindless filler, but the gems buried deeply within are more... more>> than worth the sift. <<less

Pretty good, MC's personality is similar to a ruthless AI, seeing things in losses and gains. A very ruthless AI at that. Supposed plot holes are usually reasonably addressed later, although I'm not sure if it planned from the start or not.

MC basically only has 1 advantage, he travelled back 500 years to when he was a teenager who wasn't very significant. He has to rely on future events and scheming in order to gain power, he didn't travel back in time with some super cultivation technique to become overpowered.... more>> MC never becomes overpowered, he's a small fish in a huge ocean. There's one part where MC gets screwed over and it basically erases 50% of his development and drags out for like 70 chapters.

This novel has some of the best arc endings where everything connects together (usually as a result of MC's meddling), with MC losing and gaining. MC is a masterful schemer and manipulator throughout the novel. Best twists I've seen. It's a shame that most people dropped before seeing it. <<less

Although this novel is somewhat different from the typical Xianxia novels, to me it's just boring. RI just fails to make me interested in it. The constant repetitions, unnecessary descriptions and dialogues really annoy me. No idea if this is typical Word Count Dao or just the writers style. This is similar to many Chinese novels.

Spoiler

The author wrote in an early chapter that in order to manipulate/lie to someone correctly you need to make them form the conclusions themselves (something like that, often found in novels).

You could say something like that about novels as well and not spell out everything for the reader in order to make it more interesting. The way the author overexplains every tiny decision the MC and other characters make is just the opposite of that and really makes the novel to boring for me.

Sorry if I am not clear enough. English is my 3rd language.

I dislike the Gu cultivation system. The time power and other ridiculous abilities are off putting to me. It also seems overly simplistic. Amongst the worst cultivation systems in my opinion.

Fang Yuan's character and actions got boring after a while. I haven't read that far yet, but apparently it gets really good later on. Not sure if I will ever read that far though.

This novel is so good. The writing, the world building, the conversations between characters.... this author clearly knows what he's doing. The cultivation system is unique, the fights are good. I cannot ask for more from this novel. A must read (if vile and evil protagonist is your thing)
