When she left the capital city, she was fat, chubby and white in everybody’s eyes. When she returned to the capital city, she was perfect; a goddess in everybody’s eyes.

A reporter once asked her: What do you think is most important for a woman?

She simply smiled and answered: The most important thing is to be good to ourselves.

When a person has a crush, other than the person himself, no one will know.

A fairly good story almost like Hidden Marriage but not quite as the MC's character is more somber or dare I say, melancholic? This personality stems from a heartbreaking past and unlike Hidden Marriage's Ning Xi whose reason for entering showbiz ... more>>

. One can even draw a comparison between the two protagonists with RoG's MC a more calculating individual than the MC of HM.

Now, even though I wrote that these two novels are alike but this similarity is only in the atmosphere or the overall vibe that they delivered. That feeling that there is more to it than just what is in the surface.

The characters are well-developed and the pace of the novel give each a personality that is distinctive and realistic. There is also the right amount of fluff which balances the mystery-like part in the latter half of the novel. Another thing to note is the ML, I love how the author portrayed his character. He really is a doting man to the point that I know without a doubt that he will always, and I really mean always, stand by MC's side.
Spoiler

He, himself, admitted that he will be happy to be used by MC and later on, confessed to the MC that even though he wants everyone to know that she is his woman he doesn't want others to say that she is hugging his thigh --to which the MC joked that she is not hugging his thigh, she is hugging his waist

Lastly, this is an entertaining read that is not a waste of time. One of the good modern/showbiz romance novels in novelupdates that I gladly recommend to those searching for a worthwhile novel of the same genre. <<less

So I finished this book by reading the raws, and I just felt I had to leave a review.

So this book is literally one of the best Chinese novels I've read recently. If you're expecting some MC who just turns around and relies on her bf for everything then I think this is NOT the book for you. I can't say anything about the translation because I did not read it, but the original book is written really well! The main character is very three dimensional, and the male lead... more>> very devoted. I've read quite a few novels where the male lead comes off kind of overtly 2D because of how obsessed they are, but this male lead? Nope. He's patient and caring and very nice to the female lead.

I also really really like the female lead's behaviour and her way of thinking, she's very independent, but not to the extent where she's the kind of character that come off as too stubborn and refusing everyone's help. She's very likeable as people have mentioned above!

Spoiler

The female lead is very strong, and very very smart. Her back story is very tragic and I cried while reading about her, but it's made her into a super admirable person! Also her interactions with her manager and this rich girl who liked the male lead is very sweet! (Another part that I really like!)

The male lead is really very devoted and cares for the female lead a lot, like how he treats her is exactly what they call 捧在手里怕摔了,含在嘴里怕化了. To put it simply he's very careful with her and he really takes care of her a lot. He's always there for her, but he respects her space as well. And I think their love story is very sweet. They love each other a lot and it's super cute!

[collapse]

加油 to the translator! Hope that you continue translating and share this gem of a story with everyone! <<less

I've read most of Yue Xia Die Ying's translated novels, and I have to say this one falls short, at least in the beginning. Although Ning Xi has a badass and independent personality (which I love!!), it's not as good as YXDY's other works. Maybe my expectations got too high after being spoiled by her godly writing ^^;;

Spoiler

During the first 30 chapters, Chang Shi Gui's (the ML) actions were really creepy and stalker-ish, especially because the reason why he's head-over-heels for Ning Xi is still unknown. Following her everywhere, buying her expensive gifts.. It's even worse because Ning Xi doesn't know that he knew her before she went abroad to study. It gets better around chapter 35 when Ning Xi and Chang Shi Gui gets better acquainted and the reason for his affections was uncovered.

The reason why I dislike Chang Shi Gui is because although Ning Xi is supposed to be an independent and badass lady, Chang Shi Gui is always meddling in her affairs. The reason why the people in the crew respect her: because CSG made it seem like she has a good relationship with him. The reason why she could get a role in a good movie: because CSG asked a senior actress to take care of her. The reason why the other stalker guy couldn't lay a hand on her: because CSG threatened to not collaborate with his company. What???

Another annoying thing: I can't believe how many of Ning Xi's problems come from Chang Shi Gui insisting on spending time with her. Having reporters and the media blackening her, young women from influential families making trouble for her because of jealousy, people seeing her as a vixen/succubus seducing the ML, etc. Chang Shi Gui is like a naïve trouble magnet with no situational awareness.

The problem of having Chang Shi Gui, this type of overpowered CEO, as the male lead is that his actions lessen the impact of Ning Xi's character. What's supposed to be Ning Xi getting revenge and achieving her dreams with her own ability turns to Chang Shi Gui paving the way for her. It's alright if this novel is about a girl entering the entertainment industry and being pampered by a gentle CEO, but this isn't.

[collapse]

Overall, it's a pretty solid novel. I suggest reading until chapter 40 before rating it, because it does get better. Anyways, try reading Virtuous Wife if you want more badass women, and Very Happy if you want a lighthearted and optimistic actor MC. Actually, all of her works are amazing so read them all!! <<less

Normally this type of novel with a cool, calculated heroine set in modern times is exactly what I like most. The Male Lead ruins it for me because he is way too sweet, too clingy and always lurking. It would have been a much more enjoyable read if he had some type of personality outside of being a deux-ex-machina for the Heroine. He simply solves all her problems from the background so he robs her of her <<strong independent woman>> characteristic the novel wants to portray. She might be a... more>> stay at home wife since all the good things and opportunities given to her are simply the Male Lead pulling the strings in the background and she, the gullible fish just keeps gobbling up his scraps.

It's a pity since I really like her style, the fact that she is feminine and not a tomboy <<who is just not like other girls>>, knows how to behave and assess the situation around her and her lack of naiveté so common in c-novels. But the Male Leak kills this for me. It would have been better to meet him only after she made a name for herself and be a power couple together. <<less

Decent novel but I don't know if I will keep reading. It is a story about a woman who wants to get revenge against some of the rich bullies who abused her when she was a fat teenage girl and caused a tragedy in the past. She plans to do this by entering the entertainment world, becoming rich and famous so she can fight them at their level. The premise isn't bad, but the execution lacks. I don't dislike the MC: she is determined, sometimes indifferent, detached, she knows she... more>> is beautiful and she uses it to her advantage. The ML is your typical rich CEO who always looks after stalkers the MC. What could have been a more dynamic and compelling story about an independent woman who reaches success by her own merit and hard work, becomes a story about the rich CEO who always clears whatever obstacle the MC may find in her road. This type of story lacks tension because you never get the sense that she is not in control of the situation or risks losing something, everything comes easily to her. I am tempted to lower my rating of one star because, my god, how many times we have to be reminded how incredibly and stunningly beautiful the MC is. Like I get it, must it be repeated every time a character looks at her? <<less

I really want to like it, but the way it's written just feels so boring to me. Quite a lot has happened and yet I don't feel like anything has. Some of the minor characters tend to be confusing as well.

This story is a jewel! I read the rest of the story through MTL.
There are similarities with "Just blame me for being blind in the beginning" and this story.

Spoiler

Just like in Just Blame Me, the MC is also a beautiful lady, a striving actress and has an OP CEO boyfriend.

The difference is that the MC had a really tragic life that you cant just help but pity her. You cant help but empathize with everything she went through and wonder how she overcome or rather cope with all the pain she had.

Its not all fluffy stuff but some eye opener tidbits that will make you cheer and look forward for the MC's future.

Okay so far I am liking this story better than HM aka Hidden Marriage, one is the length of the chapters, it isn’t more than a hundred, unlike HM which is 2000+ and second is the personality of the Main Character, her personality is really easy to like and unlike most MC she isn’t loud or brash. The MC isn’t dumb so she probably will fall in love and won’t be dense for like 1000 chapters unlike someone. As the ML hasn’t appeared yet, I am not making any assumptions... more>> but I hope it doesn’t disappoint me <<less

The series was only so-so for me. I liked the serious tone (no dog blood drama here!), but that was about it. It has many of the usual C-novel tropes such as an FL that's SOO beautiful that the author can't help but expound on it every other chapter; morally gray FL out for revenge; handsome, rich, domineering CEO falls in love with lower class FL; gossipy netizens are the moral voice of the novel; scumbag ex (not actually, but close enough) and his crazy mistress girlfriend, etc.

I had many... more>> of the same complaints as other viewers. The face slapping is very mild and all of the slapping is accredited to ML (although there seems to be some hints that it might actually be FL behind the scenes). The romance is really lackluster. One moment FL is rejecting ML's advances talking about how she intends to stay single, he should look for someone else, they're from different worlds, etc. Then an hour later she accepts his romantic gesture and boom they're a couple. ML has no character; his only role in the story to help FL solve problems and elevate her status through his gentle pampering and devoted love. He's a wife s*ave of the most boring kind. He's not clingy, shameless or passionate. He's more like FL's chauffeur, chef, dishwasher and forehead kisser.

FL's character was a little better than his, but also quite flat. I think this is just because of the way the story is told. There's not a lot of detail regarding her thoughts and feelings (which is probably to enhance the mystery of her past and her revenge).

All in all, it was an okay read, but not especially interesting or unique. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel, binged it, but can only give it 4 stars.

The first to understand about the novel is what it is, a revenge/romance/mystery. Not one of these aspects of the story rates 5 stars but there's enough synergy between them to make the overall readable with a sense of disappointment.

Let's look at the mystery first as it's the most annoying. The mystery has several parts are all of which are revealed in retrograde, as the story advances. It takes roughly 30 chapters before the reader gets even... more>> an inkling of the tragedy in her past, 60 chapters before it's 50% covered. It's exceedingly slow burn. The other big problem is everything about the her solving the mystery is handled off camera. It just happens. You don't see it happening at all.

Next up revenge. Unsatisfying is the word that comes to mind for this aspect of the novel. Aside from a few pieces which were handled offscreen as part of solving the mystery, she doesn't do anything to take revenge. It's either done by the ML, the police, or just circumstances. It leaves you wondering where's the beef.

last the romance. Arguably the best part of the novel but still lacking. The start is glossed over and it's cut to affection.

Bottom line readable but don't expect too much <<less

I have always love novel by this author. MC in her novels always come as smart and strong woman. This novel tells the story of how MC become actor for revenge. MC is very meticuluos in her plan. She has prepare from the beginning in case others want to entrap her using her past.

I cried when reading her past. How harsh her life after losing both her parents. I feel moved when ML tells MC to let him take care of her. When other feels jealous of MC for having... more>> ML as boyfriend, when remember how hard MC lives, they did not feel jealous but feels she deserve to be happy.

Usually when reading novel of entertainment circle, I usually skip the showbiz part. But not this one. This novel supporting character are very logical. Not all character wants to harm or jealous with MC. They take their acting job seriously. And some villain will also regret later and realised they can blame themself. Unlike brainless bit*h in other novel wanting to seduce ML or harm MC. 2nd FL also has good relationship with ML when she realize ML loves MC a lot and MC is likeable.

MC once told ML when she was 18, she once wish the prince charming will come save her. But now, she feels glad that there is no prince charming as she realised she needs to go through on her own. <<less

This is a great story if you recently read something that made you want to strangle the ML and slap some sense into the female lead.

Our female lead here is smart, capable, and gives no f*cks. There is no maybe this maybe that faintheartedness, no tolerance for BS, no forgive you once only to allow the other person to come back stronger. No concern about maintaining "face."

She takes care of business, and I love her for it.

The ML is sweet (to her only), a pillar of strength willing to be... more>> vulnerable (with her only), and overall a great guy. He also is not concerned with maintaining "face" if it means hurting the ones he loves. He's not some arrogant big boss in front of her, nor is he some puppy. He's a man in love with a woman, and she sees him that way as well.

This novel likes to joke about how dogblooded other novels/dramas are, while the characters that matter within make logical, refreshing choices.

Highly recommend this breath of fresh air ^^ <<less

How good is this? Good enough for me to binged this from ch1 to end with google translate's help.

I can only compare this story to author's other stories, TBaVW/8TT, this one is a bit lower in terms of realism and antagonist's IQ.

I repeat 3x, compare to author's other stories, compare to author's other stories, compare to author's other stories.

If you're looking for strong female lead that's not mary sue and have an actual personality & brain, read this. (And author's other stories, author is god, they're all great)

General: 8/10

A good story with a happy ending. Face slapping without dog-blood drama, no misunderstandings between main characters. Chapters are long and quite well translated. Recommended as a good read.

Translation: 8/10

... more>> Good quality translation.

Plot:

+ FL is a hard working girl with luck (I mean lucky encounters and on time assistance; naturally, I don't mean the background drama)

+ FL has a sad backstory that is quite easy to guess for the reader and yet makes sense

+ FL is not putting on airs or allowing herself to get bashed just to miraculously get up later (a common thrope in revenge novels). The FL can react accordingly to her personality and beliefs and avoid unnecessary troubles

+ FL doesn't rely on ML for everything (and is not a "do it yourself all the time" person as she knows how to ask for help sometimes)

+ ML is a good guy. Not overbearing. He respects the FL in the good way

+ ML has a story

+ Bai Lu for one of the best second FLs! Finally we have a good second rich generation woman with a career that is not obsessed over a guy, can move on and even befriend the FL not based on her relationship with ML, but for the sole reason of both of their personalities. One of the gems of this story!

+ ML's mother. Another gem. Rarely appears. A wonderful and reasonable woman.

+ the story is not fully focusing on romance. It raises questions about human life's value, family relationships, overcoming depression and school violence. It discusses the last topic from various perspectives and also mentiones those who stand by silently as well as social warriors who do moral kidnapping. I was amazed how this issue was written about compared to other novels.

+/- not much action

+/- the plot is quite easy to follow and expect

- epilogue chapters are unnecessary. No real meaning in them being there, no emotions were created after reading. Mostly felt bored of those chapters <<less

Revenge. If I had to give this story one overarching theme, it would be revenge. Initially, I was expecting the typical entertainment circle drama and was prepared to give it 3 stars, even though I had noticed how the quality of writing was much better. It surprised me to say the least.

The story had romance, friendship, ambition, and many more ideas, but they just sorted quite comfortably around the revenge arc. Most stories lose it here, where they forget their revenge for a good chunk and then come back to... more>> it as if remembering 'oh I almost forgot I had to take revenge, but the character came provoking me so I remembered'.

I personally hate bullying and school violence, any form it may be, because I have experienced it before. I sometimes think I was lucky to have been let off easy with verbal bullying and petty pranks like taking and hiding my things as compared to the horror stories I hear, like people being burned wth a curling iron, being physically assaulted and being locked up in a dark place like in this story. I was lucky to have been in a school with close surveillance of students, where teachers are around almost all the time. If you ask me I don't want revenge, I just want to see those bad people and show them that they were horrible but I made it through, in a better place, just so I can get some closure.

What the MC went through was not fictional, I believed that her experience was very real in every sense, and I was so happy when she got her revenge against the bad guys, so it was personally touching for me. I admit I even felt a sense of fear, realising just how scary the MC was, cause no one in real life is that stable to actually bide their time so patiently to get their revenge.

The cherry on top and the disappointment to me was the ML. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adored him. He was sweet, not overbearing and bossy, and sincere. However, this story really fell short in making him a person, and just made him an accessory to the MC. With such a sweet personality I thought it was such a loss for this character to be made into an accessory, when he could have been better used to enhance the portrayal of the emotional struggles of the MC and the nature of their relationship.

Since this story exceed expectations, and formed more expectations, I am leaving this review with 4 stars. <<less

TW for mentions and/or depictions of su*cide, depression, school bullying, violence, and more. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

When I read the raws of this novel, a while back, I truly liked it. For me, it doesn't only portray the beauty in life but also the ugly nitty-gritty that comes with it. After reading the English translation, I still stand by my initial review. In fact, I love it more than ever. Kudos to the translator for doing a fantastic job, by the way.

The plot isn't novel, but the... more>> characters felt real and the elements tackled in the novel do happen in real life. Unfortunately, unlike in the novel, justice isn't always served in our corporeal world. Some people are bad, just because they're bad. Sometimes, a small ripple can bring about a huge irrevocable tide. You play s*upid games, you win s*upid prizes. That's how life is.

I am not going to go in-depth about the plot but for someone who feels a lot like me, this story gutted and comforted me at the same time. The leads, on the other hand, I truly adored. They were described almost too perfectly, but they are much more than that. Our male lead, Chang Shi Gui, is one of the best male leads I have ever read about. He loves Ning Xi so unwaveringly and unconditionally. He sets the bar high, my friends. The same can be said for our female lead, Ning Xi. I never knew the true meaning of grit, until I read her story. She worked hard for what she's become. I respect and admire that.

This story may not be for everybody, but I highly recommend this. True enough, it isn't about how hard you can hit, but how you can keep moving forward after getting hit. HE guaranteed! <<less

My favorite work from this author is "Ascending do not disturb" and it is still one of my favorites to this day. Imagine my astonishment at finding out she wrote serious and dramatic stories, too. I was surprised to find I had read a couple without even knowing she was the author and I actually quite liked them.

That being said this book didn't do it for me. I liked it but I didn't love it. I gave it four stars because it was wel written and very interesting but I... more>> didn't actually care about anything, I just got swept up by the mystery that slowly unraveled and the life lessons this author tends to casually throw in there that I really appreciate. Story-wise though, there are better stories, but I just feel like it was written and also translated excellently.

It did leave me with questions though and I agree with other reviewers that the ML wasn't really fleshed out enough - it was never really explained why he fell for the MC so I felt he was lacking as a ML. He was just some rich eye candy that pampered our MC. And it wasn't even real explained what the Mc's plan was for coming back to the country - she didn't do much really and the stuff she did isn't even explained.

I don't know if the author rushed or if this was intentional on her part because her other stories do tend to leave some stuff to the imagination of the reader. I'll never know.

I liked what I read though and it wasn't a waste of time so it's being rated high for me. <<less

Not a bad novel by any means, but compared to most of the author's other works which are easily 5 stars this one is just not up to par. I've definitely been spoiled lol

MC is strong and doesn't hesitate to get revenge which was nice, however she doesn't have a single fault and all the antagonists just seemed to lack a brain and couldn't hold a candle to the MC and got outsmarted right away, which didn't make it satisfying in the slightest

ML is like the typical rich company president... more>> love interest but not the overbearing stereotype, instead the cooks for her does everything for her fell in love with her at first site when they were young and still loves her type—nothing interesting there making the romance kinda boring. He had no depth and was not memorable at all.

Plot just felt dull and a tad repetitive compared to Very Happy (another actor showbiz novel by this author) and every other novel by them

It was the first time I felt like skimming chapters while reading a novel by this author, but still good especially if you like this trope <<less

Its good. The ML fell in love with the MC way before either was a CEO or actress. Although, she didn't know. The MC was really fat growing up and the plot revolves around how she was treated by others when she was younger. Her youth was quite tragic and honestly the ML could of not been there and she would of still gotten her revenge (which is super, super rare for these novels).

A male lead who is too good to be true, but I like!

The story itself is not exactly tragic but the female lead has pretty tragic past in this book is mostly about how the female lead came back to get revenge. Her past are slowly revealed throughout the story.

Be warned that there will be a lot of crying but there is not much complications. The second female lead is even likeable. The story is a pretty smooth ride.

If you are looking to those strories with too much family life... more>> complications, you will be highly disappointed. This novel is pretty simple, straight to the point and a good read in between thick novels that eats up too much brain juice. <<less
