I do love this series that I started to binge read the series in two days and finished reading. That it is fun to read.

Elena Ruford nee Blaise Main Character is very badass woman who wanted to protect her family by marrying the Crown Prince of Ruford Carlisle Van Dimitri Ruford. She is good at wielding her sword I do feel like her weakness is to protect her family only to get caught in the hands of the main antagonist. Gotta be honest, I'm quite relieved I'm not the only one who thinks this novel is very poorly-written. The plot was intriguing enough to keep me pushing forward, but it got so boring I fell asleep after every chapter lol

The author strikes me as either very young and/or very inexperienced. I read a lot of reincarnation/transmigration stories to know that you need a certain level of maturity and life-long wisdom to write this kind of plot convincingly and intelligently.

The biggest flaw of this novel is its characters, particularly the MC.... more>> They are what my Creative Writing Professor would call "stock characters." There are that pretty MC everyone loves, a hot ML, handy 2nd ML, a jealous villainess, a scary evil villain, adorable lil sis, stoic big bro, etc. You will see the pattern after a while. It's very one dimensional so it's recognizable.

All the characters were said to be smart but didn't show their intelligence at all. Elena kept acting like a naive young girl, which would be perfectly fine if she's really a young noble daughter. But the point is she's not. She's claimed to be no.1 swordswoman, lived to be around 40s, fought her way to confront the evil big boss; you'd expect her to have much more wisdom, know how to scheme and plot against others, and ultimately be much more proactive in achieving her goal. Instead, Elena is rather dim-witted, too ignorant of what should be handled, too focused on unnecessary things, too kind for her own good, and too flimsy to make life-or-death decisions.

As for other characters, some are a bit better such as the Male Lead who has his own dark side, though his head-over-heels over the MC makes him kinda boring. Some characters are just there to move the plot, like the lil sis who is basically a burden to everyone around her or the petty nemesis who hates MC for no reason. I was kinda hoping things would pick up after the plot moved to the big game (i.e. Fight for the throne) but it did not. Still boring. Still eye-rolling s*upid. So the two stars are for (1) the translator for going through this torment, and (2) the potential hidden deep under.

All in all, I think this novel would be a good read for beginner readers. I would have enjoyed it when I was much younger. Unfortunately, I've read too many dark fantasy novels and everything in-between to enjoy it.

If this is the author's debut work, I hope she got better and she grew older. There is a potential there, just really bad execution. <<less

After 39 chapters it got boring and I started skipping lines. I don´t know what everyone else is smoking here to be giving this 5 stars. The plot is so unoriginal and cliche, and each interaction between MC and ML made me almost throw up in my mouth.

ML, the prince, is already in love with her because guess what? They met once in their childhood. God these overused romance plot tropes... It´s nice to read a story with a guaranteed happy ending. But does the journey have to be... more>> so goddamn predictable with a beautiful, strong heroine and a dashing powerful hero? It´s like reading Romeo and Juliet but with less good writing and dull characters.

Okay I know I´m the idiot for expecting something extra despite the cover pic and the summary. <<less

One of the most promising novels i've found recently, would 100% recommend to read it to see where it goes.

I know a lot of people like to wait for more releases to start reading, but I ask you to at least leave a like and comment on the first chapter, because the translator is deciding to pick this up or not by the responses in the comments.

So many 5 star reviews praising the characters for having "intelligence", for the MC to have "common sense" and "dignity" etc.

I've read to the end of the stories in the raw, and I can promise everyone else with a lick of sense that those guys are probably just bots with fake reviews because the MC of this story suffers from the common affliction that all other shoujo novels do.

Basically they are s*upid, emotionally and socially crippled, because how else do you get a multi chapter story to publish for women... more>> eh?

MC does not have common sense. Far from it in fact, for an alleged brutal, mercenary female knight used to a life of wandering, blood and indignity, a lot of her issues and obstacles in the story come from the fact that every time she encounters a problem, she will fuss and moan and angst about it, before being the absolute princess and letting the matter rot and fester somewhere.

Obvious, this comes back to bite her in the ass to say nothing of her complete lack of anything resembling ruthlessness or cunningness. The very first arc in the story already exemplifies it. Think of how the maid she let go came back to bite her in the ass, rinse and repeat just with different characters and situations, but the main crux of the problem remains, and voila, that is EXACTLY how the rest of the story goes. She never matures beyond the "oh my, ah my heart, why must I do such things, this poor thing, I must be good to her even though she obviously isn't a good person."

No shit. You're supposed to be a mercenary, but you've never seen, heard or maybe even DONE a simple assasination before? One that would have neatly cut off all your issues without leading it back to you? Really?

MC has dignity? My left foot has more dignity than her. At least my left foot doesn't automatically transform into a brainless, angsty, swooning idiot every time the male lead appears within 5 km. Doesn't seem so bad in the first 50-80 chapters, but my God, the last 40 chapters. Near perfect damsel in distress. <<less

As of Chapter 150: This novel has gone down a very different path than I'd originally thought, so I'm revising my rating. It kind of gives the first impression of a heroine who spends most of her time at war (my cup of tea), but in reality it leans more toward tea party and doting prince (ironically not so much my cup of tea). So be forewarned! This is more shoujo than action.

Original review:

What an amazing novel, I was completely taken by surprise! It checks every single one of my... more>> boxes.

  • An actually competent female protagonist with drive and a goal? Check!
  • A pragmatic point of view? Check!
  • Well-rounded characters with motives who care about each other? Check!
  • A fricking marriage of convenience, yes please!
  • Protagonist faces sexism that isn't either a strawman or condoned by the story! What! Checkcheckcheck
Also a struggle to prevent a coup and decently done battle scenes and just such a departure from the whole badly-researched sorta-European reincarnated-Japanese-salaryman princess-knight light novel thing, I am frothing at the mouth. I should've known it would be Korean.

The translation is great too, it reads very fluently and lots of updates. I'm looking forward to this novel in the future. :) <<less

The Ultra Amazing Super Knight that almost downed an entire kingdom goes back in time to act like a common and gulible noble lady.

The romance is terrible, since she wants to marry for interest and the ML had a childhood crush the MC never realized. Their interactions are not interesting and the ML's personality is the most cliche of all.

The MC has little agency considering she wanted to change the future, and she never acts like the badass warrior we keep being told she was. The excessive mercy is also... more>> something we wouldn't find in a veteran warrior, specially when said mercy caused the death of their entire family.

Overall this novel fails in the two things it promised: A Badass MC and a good Romance. <<less

Good example of lazy writing, which is why I'll probably be dropping this one. An OK read for somebody who enjoys shoujo, and is willing to suspend disbelief and common sense.

Absolutely disappointed in the MC. So much potential for a strong female MC hardened and wizened from her personal tragedy before given a chance to re-live her life by going back in time. Instead, the MC is a Mary Sue who can physically fight, and her most intelligent decision was to save the man who will save her and her... more>> family thereon. Author cherry picks when the MC's EQ goes online, mainly to frame her as "pure" (virgin, ignorant of romance, avoid luxury, etc...). Every chapter has the MC think, feel, or do something that I question because the author chooses to keep the MC within tropes rather than have her think, feel, or act more realistically.

Other characters are no better – all of them are stereotypical and are very 2D. None of the characters feel like they could be real people. As a result, interactions between characters are also very 2D by their straightforwardness, which is an odd choice for a story that supposedly revolves around intrigue. Drama is similarly uninspired and predictable.

Some minor mysteries that are intriguing, but are either predictable or unimportant.

Sadly, a good premise for an MC ruined by a lazy author reliant on stereotypes. Nothing is particularly appealing while most of it is boring. Much better alternatives: "Common Sense of a Warrior" if you mostly want a strong female fighter or "The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage" for satisfying revenge from a time-travelling and actually intelligent MC. <<less

The title and synopsis give me a high expectation.

The execution is a bit lacking though. Here she has an amazing ability to fight plus with the knowledge of past live she will know events that will come ahead of everyone. But she didn’t utilize these two major cheats to the best of her abilities. Sadly.

Instead she has to spend her time dealing with this so called “female nobles cliques”. Isn’t that boring? She was one of the best Knight in her past life!

Her decision to “hug a golden tigh” could... more>> be awesome had she went to the route of the said title. “Return of the Female Knight”. We only see her occasionally turn into this knight.

I wish to see her investigate heavily: what power and affiliation do the evil guy have? Why the evil guy aim for her family? Why? What purpose? How did he do it? How to avoid it? How to weaken the guy so he couldn’t hurt her family again? How to block him from gaining allies?

Shouldn’t this be priority for one these second chance trope??

I feel like she works in slow motion toward her goal ; the safety of her family.

The one that made me disappoint : Despite portray as a powerful female (scratch that, she is powerful fighter), she chose a man to protect her and family. I meant here she has two fork road; one go Mulan, one go Princess style. She chose princess style.

The title turns a bit meaningless because of this.

Now even with all that, I still enjoy the novel. <<less

This story is ok. The characters are ok, the story's development is ok, the romance is ok, everything about this novel is ok but at certain point it becomes boring. I feel this novel needs something to became great. I'm not fondle about the relationship between Elena and the Crown Prince because it's the typical relationship in Korean's novels, I really don't care if they will end up together or not.

Elene herself doesn't catch the interest either, at the beginning of the novel it let seems she is the best... more>> swordman of the continent, it is a lie. Every danger situation she faces with the prince, is him who always save her, I never read that famous talent of her, she only blushed ugh. Do you really want to read a REAL swordwomam, then go and read the emperor and his female knight. I bet Polly would beat Elena's ass. It's surprising how well rating this novel is. Don't get tricking by the rating! <<less

Love it! This is the kind of novel I've been looking for! Strong intelligent female lead? ✓ Political maneuvers? ✓ Romance? ✓ Heartwarming family? ✓ A little action? ✓ No harem? ✓

Best of all? The author seems to treat the characters with a little dignity, actually giving them an actual brain! The things you learn!

I'm very happy to have discovered this.

Looking forward to reading more.

The story leading to this arc, was disappointment.

Spoiler

The MC had so much potential in the beginning, but the moment she used the silly excused of seeing her lover at night and told her maid, in order to save ML. It was extremely idiotic. I don't know if there was something with the author building her background but she completely forgot that reputation was extremely important to nobility. Afterward, she even stated that she knew there was something wrong with the maid whom she "confessed" to, as the maid expected more while she didn't bother to addressed it. Until the maid then spread rumors that she's seeing a man every night to the household. Afterward, she fired the maid, she even said she could've silence the maid. This is after the crowned prince and her had set their plans, the prince also gave her an assassin for her use anytime, this is also after she had made enemies (one of the is influential powerful, whom her littler sister told her about--and MC was completely oblivious to it --I'm surprised she even lived that long in her previous life). Also, MC was a vindictive, bloody knight in her previous life who wanted revenge for her family. Back to the maid, of course, she choose to just fired the maid. And what a surprised, guess who found the maid and started vicious rumors in the social circle with the maid as a witness and another noble as "proof" that MC sleeps with a different man every night.

[collapse]

I went an read the raw korean novel. I'm really disappointed in how MC became. Consider how powerful and strong she was build up initially, the author couldn't follow up with it. MC became very childish and her actions/thoughts were immature--not match for someone who was supposed to went through tragedy and lived for revenge. She was like a duckling adolescent, who doesn't think things through, definitely doesn't plan ahead or see the bigger picture (as she was soooo proud that she was strong and can be the prince's knight, but that's all she does), and the prince then come and clean up her mess. <<less

So exciting! Very few novels have female MC's, and even fewer have female MC's in action novels. It seems there will be romance in the story, but the main point of the story so far has been to highlight the MC's sheer badassery and dedication towards her family, which just makes her even more awesome. It's unusual to have an MC with a female perspective delve into a medieval knight fighting society and try to best the super powerful antagonist of the story. For sure, most action novels do not... more>> have the MC taking care of housework and striving to keep their powers under wrap for a legitimate reason. So much of the time, novels just make the power hiding a forgotten point in the plot. "Oh... the MC hides their power because they like... hiding their power... (and because the author needs to write in more faceslapping incidents) ". Not here, there's a solid reason for her hiding her power and I enjoy that there is a solid plot because a solid plot serves as the foundation to a great story. I think this story has the potential to be great and I think people should add it to their reading lists and prepare to become addicted. <<less

I just finished the latest chapter and after reading all the review, I feel like writing mine too.

I saw many complains bout the MC didn't utilize her cheat (past memory, information,...), however, the novel didn't clearly say how much years had she been a knight. I suggest she maybe strong but doesn't live that long to completely mature, because in the past life, she only fill with hatred and can't enjoy or can't think about anything else.

The MC development, I think is fair, she appeal to be someone who is... more>> good at using her sword rather than dealing with internal affair. After all her family isn't that high in society, maybe the buff about she being a Queen is too much, but at least she is trying her best. MC has a gentle heart, and I think it suits this story, where the crown prince is a person of doubt. It maybe too naive but the fact that she still yearn for light is great. Well, clearly she is trying to make the crown prince into a King by mostly fighting. Many also complain about the fighting scene is kinda little, well she is a noble girl whose schedule is watched by everyone so let's say she tries her best.

By the type of light novel then the author has done pretty good job already. If you say there are many novel that the plot is greater, the MC development is tighter, the hardship is more logical, then I agreed, yes there are many more. However, if you want a easy going story to read, to have a light heart and embrace the cuteness without too many OOC, then this's the right one. Therefore, I suggest you not taking it too critical.

I'm not really sure how things turn out in the end, considering this is a KR novel, and this may seem a favoring review but, it's just that I am tired of MC with too many cheat already.

If you want a heavier story with a lot of brainstorm, military and political include, I suggest [I Reincarnated as a Noble Girl Villainess But Why Did It Turn Out This Way?] <<less

translation 4/5

story 4/5

characters 1/5

... more>> special bonus : illustration 5/5 xD

the setting is nice, it's almost the same as the CN "rebirth of the malicious empress" since it's a FM that came back in time and swear to protect her family/clan this time. The ML is, well, obviously a cool prince like in any of these OP FL stories xD

now, because I have a comparison possible here, it was even more evident how flowed these characters are. I rated the characters 1/5 because the settings and their actions aren't coherent...

don't know if it's a spoiler so may as well put it in a spoiler x) :

Spoiler

1) she's supposed to have become a top rated swordwoman who lived for revenge and killed a tons for 20 years, but then she came back and the notion of "cutting the problem from the roots" aren't here... I don't know if I read too many novels with characters that become almost cold blooded after experienced a living hell but she's just too... rosed colored in her head.

2) apparently she has organized her house and personnel well, but her handmaid or at least a servant she'd take with her to serve her alone on a trip need a gold to be silent and when her treatment didn't became better after that, she'll snitch on her master... really ? on the side of the prince, his subornate tried to change his decision many times when FM comes disguise as a knight, no trust in his master it seems~~ even when he has been to many battlefield, won everything and is a superman but nope, his subordinate is just at that level. a chance we have kuhn, or I'd really wonder if he just go alone on the battlefield without trusted companions.

3) the author want to make FM intelligent, but she's pretty much slow-witted just for the plot. And she's dense to the point of inhuman... it may be fun if there's tsukkomi reactions or something but here, she's dense, just goddamn dense and the ML still fell hard for her and is astonished by her intelligence, oh dear...

[collapse]

the saving grace for this novel is the illustrations, 1 per chapter (chapters are cut in 2 parts for most of them) and it's super nice, like a manhwa :)

I just wanted to read till the ball then I'll pretty much forget this novel, the characters setting and the story setting were good, too bad all the little details made the read a bit painful.

I won't say it's not worth the read but only if you don't mind details and just read for the fun.

If you like this kind of story, try "Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage" (almost finished being translated as of 11/06/2019 entirely translated as of 05/07/2019) <<less

I had great expectations because of the high reviews but it’s super lacking. I feel like the characters are way too two-dimensional and the writing is so lack luster. The dialogue between the characters is also really bad; I feel like they’re just saying things to say something and follow a common formula I’ve read a thousand times before. There was so much filler in the writing I began to just read dialogue but even then it still drags on. Not the worst but definitely far from good.

The format of this novel is pretty fascinating and the multitude of images makes the story more fun to read.

It is too early to say about the characters or the plot, but the translator did an amazing job. The emotional parts are really gripping. I don't think I will be getting bored of this, anytime soon and really looking forward to it. Also it doesn't use any of the common troupes of this genre so it's kind of a fresh storytelling.
