The story is good and relaxing to read. It has good plot and a unique way to describe every events in the story, but I just have one question, how MC survived if he fell unconscious for more than 7 days? Like seriously they dont even explain it and left me struggle with this question

so Uhmm from the title itself Retirement life, MC ALREADY SUFFERED SO MANY TRAGEDIES and finally on his 3rd life - (the current story of the novel) He finally had some peaceful life. At the same time uncovering the conspiracies happened in the past. Yep at the start until chap 30? It is boring. Just about rural life, MC picking up fruits and cooking. Until he got marrried to Ml. ML is such a good hubby too. Anyways MC together with his brothers&ML found out more what happened in tha... more>> past. They are more prepared this time. There are some side CP's. Anyways just 4 star. Like why is there no ML on his 2nd life? Uhmm there's a lil bit about father Lin (modern) what happened to mama lin?. Anyways again it's a good ending for the main couple. There's just no news if they ever got a kid. Or if the emperor and his lover got a baby <<less

Pretty good I guess. But mann it has every bit of transmigration type mixed in it. The MC is double transmigrated. There is also some plot about the end of the world and fanatic researchers doing experiment on MC and mc's bros being zombie kings respectively. After transmigration, there is some politics and court plot. A transmigrated woman with a mary sue halo who is doing the nasty to build a harem. Later you will learn that mc's father somehow went to interstellar age and used his half mental power... more>> to create a system to save MC and his bros. And later on there is a slight mention of cultivation. It's like a imperial dragon offered ML to learn cultivation which he refused for MC that is so sweet. So yeah despite some..... actually a lot of plot hole this hybrid story is a good read when you have nothing literally nothing to do. Like staying at home during the pandemic <<less

Somehow, I am remembering that one arc from Quickly Wear the Face of a Devil (I'm not sure if this the right novel)

In that arc, the world also has gers and it was in the perspectives of a wronged ger villain and his partner was the general who was supposed to be the partner of the ML of the original plotline of that arc/in that world.

You could say that this novel is the original plotline of that arc in QWFD like..

  • The ML in QWFD in that arc is almost the same as the MC in this novel, though I'm not sure if their background story was the same or not.
  • Both the ML in QWFD and the MC in this novel had undertook the farming and cooking genre.
  • The general/commander in that arc and in this novel also had amnesia and somehow strayed into some village, the only difference is that the general in QFWD was saved by the ML and was not doctor unlike in this novel.
I would like to believe that my conjecture is wrong and that maybe I'm just imagining it, but the deja vu I am feeling made me feel a spark of irony that is somehow hilarious cause I can't stop myself from noting the differences of both novels.

Anyway, I'm still satisfied, it's just that I feel like the translation is somewhat wrong (?) or not up to par to my expectations, or maybe it's just how the author writes.

4 stars is already a good score, and I wouldn't write a review if I really didn't like it. <<less

Not my cup of tea. I only read it because it’s about food. The story doesn’t talk about MC cooking food or what type of food they eaten. It just about slice of life in ancient time travel. There was no yaoi. Everyone know yaoi has s*x scene. The story felt like quick reading and not lot about building relationships couple.

What to say? Simply good. Though the novel may be seemed transimigration, it was written in very unique way. Like translator reminded, you should slowly read and savor the plot of novel or else, you'll be confused. (I was oringinal slow reader so I like this novel a lot). Just a thing disappointing me is too short! Extermely tooooo shoooooort!

Tho I came here for mpreg but there is nothing about MC pregnancy! TwT

Any way, this novel worth much more good review.

Rating: 3.5/5

This novel confused me on more levels than one... While the plot doesn't seem overly complicated some important plot points are being glossed over or pushed on the back burner. So we don't get to find out any details on matters such as why the MC transmigrated or what happened with his alter ego. Like dude, if you already give him a bad*ss alter ego, then flesh him out a little and give him more screen time.

What further confused me was the pacing of the novel. It's like nothing... more>> or at least not much happens during the whole duration of the novel until you realize you are 5 chapters away from the end and extra chapters, making you wonder how the author is going to wrap up the novel. And then the author pulls a fast one one you and just does away with the antagonist that had been hyped up during the whole entire novel in such an anticlimactic way and without any real explanation on the process that it has your head reeling. It's like the author got tired of writing the novel and just wanted to finish up quickly without putting in much work. What I want to say is that the ending feels rushed. And when you look back on the whole entire novel you wonder what even really happened. How did the author manage to write 70+ chapters when barely anything happened?

Spoiler

Another thing that confused me was how much of a damsel in distress the MC was. Didn't he go through the apocalypse before the transmigrated? How could he still be so mentally weak and s*upid as to rush out in a dangerous situation, get weak legs and even close his eyes when attacked??? I didn't seem to be the only one who was confused considering the comments under that particular chapter.

[collapse]

But at least there were a lot of likeable characters. As for unlikeable characters, there is only the female transmigrator antagonist who basically only really personally appears twice or thrice in the novel aside from flashbacks, dreams or storytelling so even the dislike you should feel for her didn't get much of a chance to develop.

While I do seem to have a lot of points to criticize the novel was still an okay read, not outstanding but not utterly bad either. <<less

so to start of with, despite the low rating I actually enjoyed this book. it might seem a bit contradictory to say that but this sort of genre is one I truly do enjoy. I like that it's peaceful and relaxing and simply just a fluffy read that will leave your heart feeling warm.

& to me, this book did just that.

the good points

  • I loved the dynamics of the Lin family I love that there wasn't infighting and unnecessary drama and that it was just a peaceful family supporting each other and getting along.
Spoiler
  • I actually really liked how it took some time for Lin Mo to warm up to the family too. often in rebirth stories such as this, the protagonist quickly accepts their state and accepts their new family without much thought. I liked that in this case, it took a while before Lin Mo fully accepted ALL members of the family.
    [collapse]
  • the characters were really nice to read about too. though not all of them were as developed as Lin Mo I still enjoyed reading about them and I fell in love with all the Lin family members.
  • the main cp are delightful. it isn't a case of insta love (not really) and I liked that.
  • like I said before this book is genuinely a relaxing read.
the bad point

to me, this book really only has just one bad point. however, it's such an important plot point that it directly brings down what would have probably been a 3.5 rating otherwise.

a lot of reviewers have already mentioned it but it must be said that this book... it's as if the author took every single idea in this world and shoved it into one book.

in just this one book we had

  • 2 rebirths
  • 3 transmigrators
  • a system
  • an apocalypse
  • a spiritual space
  • parallel worlds/universes
  • spiritual cultivation??
  • palace intrigues/conspiracies
& somehow I'm sure I'm missing many more. & the sheer amount of ideas, despite being ridiculous, might have worked if the author didn't simply just brush up on it only to not touch it again. honestly, I can sorta see the author's vision and I can actually see it working and sure it's confusing but the idea is something that can be grasped if you pay attention.

however, in a book such as this, I shouldn't have to do mental gymnastics to understand the point. it's almost as if the author had these grand ideas but was too afraid to really delve into it and then towards the end got bored and just.. there was so much info dump and also not a lot of information was revealed at the same time?

I don't know.. like I said I actually don't dislike this novel despite my low rating. it was a relaxing read but it's only for the Lin family and Cheng Yan & his family that I enjoyed it.

as for the plot? it's unfortunately a case of grand ideas and very bad execution. <<less

Honestly it had a lot of great potential. The summary was cute, retiring from a zombie apocalypse to ancient times farm life (I love farm life!!), the ger calling his cold husband his angel. I like reading those types.

I liked how MC acted with his family and tried to get rich to get a comfortable life. He wasn't too ambitious, he was more focused on having a good life after the bad of the last one (MC was too tragic last life). I honestly don't feel much chemistry between the... more>> two leads, ML was the only man MC could tolerate touching him (bc of his past trauma) and ML fell at first sight but didn't realize it till someone told him. They start acting more cute & couple like after they got engaged, the interactions with the the family could be sweet and enjoyable but there are moments where a little brother is more annoying than funny. But after their village wedding everything changed and felt too rushed.

Unfortunately it felt like the author wanted to do a lot more than was possible in the amount of chapters they had. Themes? Topics? Tropes? I'm not sure of the right term but there are some that naturally go together and some that are just excess to add on top of. I could have accepted a lot of things but even I reached a point where it was too much. Nothing got a real satisfying closing, even the big bad was taken care of way too quick.

Spoiler

they used (and I may have missed something) :

  • Zombie apocalypse (plus ability users)
  • Transmigration to ancient times
  • Male, female, Ger genders
  • MC has a secret space
  • ML has Amnesia
  • MC has trauma from past abuse as a prisoner (from the labs) that leads to a dual personality
  • MC very knowledgeable about food, uses it to become rich
  • Secret Royal/Noble x2
  • Rebirth of other characters
  • Villain is also a transmigrator
  • System turned human
  • Futuristic fantastical science (dad used part of his soul to create system)
  • ML is blessed by a dragon God, to be able to cultivate into immortality.
  • A world of higher power above theirs (ML could go but he'd have to leave MC it's related to above)
  • (This one's not really a trope but felt too ridiculous) the whole royal family married someone from MC family, MC x ML, MC's bro x ML's bro, system (born from Dad's soul, considered family by MC) x ML's other bro. The same social circle I'd get but the family???
  • Showing the OG timeline as an extra

At this point I was waiting for aliens or good himself to drop down. The extras felt like a bit of a let down.

  • MC's brother basically rehashes the whole story in his POV with very little new information
  • The creation of the system and how he got to the side of the emperor (could have been interesting but it wasn't to my taste so I skimmed)
  • MC's life from rebirthed brother's timeline but again not much new, most of it you learn in the main story flashbacks
  • MC's niece & nephew growing up, military nephew is a sis-con who tries to keep her from marriage, they end up having a double wedding where they each marry their love. (Nephew is gay & in love with a regular man, not a ger one) I kinda like this extra

I'm wondering if ML died in the first ancient timeline or never found because big bro said he wasn't in their life last time.

First and foremost, this isn't quite the normal transmigration into an ancient/historical era. Fortunately, the whole novel has been translated so you don't have to get tossed in the confusing MTL, but do be warned it does get messy! Not dogblood messy but just a lot of plots happening messy.

I liked the writing, it's pretty interesting! We have our end of the world MC, who dies at the jaws of zombies, wake up in an ancient dynasty world and he's a ger now. There's no mpreg on MC himself (unless... more>> it happens in the extras which I didn't read all of them). A lot of unexpected things get tossed into this story which seem really unreasonable and a tryhard attempt at a giant plot weave, but I think it worked out fine. I wouldn't be able to weave this even if I turned immortal and have been writing since the dawn of time anyway!

To summarise, the title and synopsis are true. However, the plot digs deeper!

Spoiler

We have

  • MC's transmigration into this new body with a big family. He vows to make the most out of this life and cherish his new family.
  • The 2 eldest brothers in this new world are seemingly parallel to MC's original brothers.
  • MC's ancient eldest brother's rebirth where he saw the downfall of their family. He does his best to change the course of his family's fate.
  • the one annoying female transmigrator with a Mary Sue halo who caused the downfall of the Lin family in the eldest brother's previous incarnation.
  • amnesiac ML, who didn't appear in the ancient eldest brother's previous life, turns out to be a prince (this was not very surprising) BUT he's also blessed by some dragon god statue thing and can become a cultivator?? Totally out of left field and fortunately stayed there
  • and, an interstellar system that was created by a scientist with the aid of MC's original father's spirit. He's also marrying the Emperor

I know, it sounds crazy but it's actually not bad.

[collapse]

The characters are lovable and much appreciated! I think the whole novel was a great read but the actual wrap up of the big plots turned into a swift and clean sweep which was less exciting to read. No dramatic stretches or faceslaps though, so I can appreciate that!

Would recommend to read this, but do keep an open mind when reading this! If you're looking for a simple farming slice of life where MC and ML work their way up the system (through business or education, etc), this is probably not it. <<less

I drop this novel halfway because I feel like this novel is too much for me.

1. Character. There are more than 1 character with two faces. Even though it seems interesting at first, because it appears again and again, it feels monotonous and forced.

2. Plot. The author puts too many plots here, and because of the limited chapters, each plot becomes confusing and feels weird. The authors write that this plot is necessary and It's understandable if you finish reading the novel, but I was impatient and not interested enough... more>> that I didn't continue reading it.

3. Genre. Seriously, the author adds a lot of plots involving different genres to the point where I'm confused about what I'm reading.

However, the translator said he really liked this novel so I think there will be many other readers who will love it. A few tips, this novel is more suitable for those of you who like to read slowly. <<less

Very enjoyable story, a ton of fluff with the mc/ML and family's daily life.

The story felt a little slow at the start as very little progress is made and then suddenly picks up with a rushed bittersweet ending and some extras of what their lives are like at the end.

The stories only suspense was the MC past life and how he is affected by it in the new world as the antagonist predicted has very few scenes and was dealt with behind the scenes so it didn't have a satisfying... more>> end.

The story is very relaxed as it just followed the characters lives so its good for a chill fast read, <<less

So, just to start off, I DID enjoy this story. It was nice, had complex elements which did have hints which led up to the twists if you payed attention, and the relationship of the main characters was sweet. The translation was also quite nice and I didn't go through the confusion clusterf*** it seems some others who tried to mtl it did. It was a sweet, first read, but not a story I enjoyed enough to read again. Now, for the reason behind my star choice.

Spoiler

While I mentioned before that the story has complex elements, it still felt like the author tried to put TOO many elements in the story. As my design teacher told me, try to keep any core elements of a piece in 2-3s, after that, it starts to get cluttered. I feel like this is a good example of that. Reincarnated into an alternate ancient time after dying in an apocalypse? Sweet. A family member from ancient time also reincarnated from from the future of said ancient time where things went bad? Cool, haven't seen that one before. The villain of that future where things went bad in ancient times is a transmigrator? Uh... ok? I guess that can still be interesting. Let's see how this goes. There's a system that's from the future of the world MC died in that his dead dad sent back through space and time to protect him? Ok, now you lost me. Cultivation?... I give up.

Like, maybe one COULD put all these elements in a story without making it feel cluttered, but I don't think it works in a story only 74 chapters long, especially when it takes 30 chapters or so for the main couple to get married the first time. The pacing felt off throughout the story, but it was wholesome enough for me to keep reading till the end. I feel like enough people have mentioned the confusing parts about the story, so I wont talk about those. Honestly? My biggest gripe with this story was that lack of conflict or suspense in it. Yes, there were suspenseful moments, (like when the MC was in a coma) but I cant really name a time I was legitimately worried bout the safety of the people or relationship in the story. The "Villains" show up quite sparingly up until the very end, to the point I occasionally forgot they were there. In hindsight, this might just be my bad for expecting such things from a slice of life story. I was excited for the tags and neglected to notice the genres.

[collapse]

Didn't wana click the spoiler tag or tl;dr? Here's the short version:
It's a nice SLICE OF LIFE story with complex elements. (though I feel the author tried to put too much into it) It is a bit bland, but that's not unusual for this genre if there's no comedy to spice it up. If you're expecting drama from the revenge and amnesia tags, there's not much. Though, if you're looking for wholesomeness, I feel the story has some :)

Nice story, just not was I was expecting and didn't quite match my tastes. (really couldn't force myself to keep going after chap 70) <<less

MTL translation.

Spoiler

To clarify, there's nothing wrong with MTL translations. Lots of fantastic translations can come from edited MTL.

However, I specifically point this out for translations that aren't much better than MTL or editors who don't spend time to look things up and try to actually interpret what the author is saying instead of just stringing a bunch of incoherent words together.

Bascially, what I mean here is: inaccurate translation that require a lot of effort to understand.

[collapse]

As other readers have already mentioned, the story itself is also a confusing mishmash as the author tried to "break convention" by writing a mix of genres that normally don't exist together (interstellar, time travel, rebirth, zombie apocalypse, ancient times, transmigration, cultiation).

The execution of the author left a lot to be desired (but part of it could have been an issue with the translation.)

I found the early parts of the book pretty enjoyable as a slice-of-life. The concepts introduced of the MC's brother being reborn could have had a lot of impact and created an interesting plot had it been fully explored instead of thrown in with 20 other elements as a gimmick.

Ultimately, first half I would recommend for those who are looking for a positive and fluffy slice-of-life in a village setting. Just don't expect much out of the rest. <<less
