One of best character growth I have seen in a novel, the transition from a naive/foolish young boy into an adult man is well done.

Spoiler

The MC transition from a naive boy into a mass mu*derer sociopath.

[collapse]

The world building, story development and plot transition are nearly perfect.

The only downside are:

Spoiler

The world is just too dark for me, and MC is just a psychopath. (ATG's MC can be considered a saint compared to Wang Lin)

Spoiler

I haven't finished the novel, but the romance is......... might as well consider the novel doesn't contain romance

It's a very unique story... but one of the finest!! Non-stop thrills and chills in this one. The character, story development, pacing is just perfect. None of those copy paste scenarios unlike other novels where you go through the same plot & dialogues again and again. Er Gen is simply the best! You've basically an MC who's brought up into a cruel ruthless world where he's just trying to survive and live in peace. His character's more like an assasin cold, dark n gloomy yet with a warm heart.

No... more>> it's not a harem story. Just a simply love story.

The only downside is despite the translator doing a good job it has UNSTABLE releases.... someone else needs to pick this novel or help him out to translate before more readers start dropping it out of frustration.

P.S- Worth it

I dropped this novel after a few chapters, bad romance, very boring start. MC is so blind can't even see because of all the hatred. Probably another guy who follows meng hao's footstep into becoming into a "wizard" 1000 yrs old v*rg*n very sad very sad indeed. Probably the action is also good in the latter part like ISSTH but nah. One ISSTH Final arc is traumatizing enough for me. For some people out there it might be good I suggest you read it. It might be worth your while... more>> but for me ENOUGH is ENOUGH. <<less

TLDR; If you're new to Xianxia, read ISSTH first. The hurdle for reading this is higher. If you're not familiar with cultivation terms, you'll get lost easily.

I just read this out of curiosity to see what Er Gen's writing looks like in early days. Well, it's just not written as well as ISSTH. There are some plot holes which IMO is deliberate to make more crisis/tragedy/drama. There are a lot of redundant information every tens of chapters to remind you what was happening. I think that's the reason that the... more>> chapter counts is 2088 unlike ISSTH that is around 1300ish chapters. Mind you that ISSTH is written in 2014 and this one in 2009 so Er Gen must have gained a lot of experience since then.

Examples on what's lacking, I found the characters introduction at its worst is too packed and confusing to boot. The characters are introduced like 'BAM-BAM-BAM!' in a chapter and you don't even know who is who anymore and even worse, some of them won't show up anymore after that. Also, the term used like 'XXX's father's uncle' instead of 'great/grand-uncle' or 'xyz has a foot at xxx cultivation realm but this guy is also pseudo-xxx realm', I know that's probably literal translation but terms like these just make the readability harder. I was even confused at early chapters where Tie Zhu/Wang Lin are used interchangeably in a single chapter, I was like "who is this two guys" and found out, it's the MC. Luckily I found this problem only on early 100-200 chapters, maybe Er Gen realized his mistakes and toned it down. That's just one of the example on how confusing this novel can be at its worst. Also, IMO, the drama and tragedy aspect is kinda dull and forced because the deliberate plot holes. A lot of crisis/tragedy/drama could be averted easily but the Er Gen just made MC got bad luck every choice he made. I couldn't drown myself to the story because of this deliberate plot holes. It just slapped my brain back to reality.

This is still a decent read though. I perceive some of the elements similar to ISSTH when reading this novel. You can say this is like ISSTH prototype. I haven't finished reading it but you can expect a lot of mind blowing stuffs. <<less

If you ask me to describe this novel, the MC in particular in one phrase then it would be "can't catch a break". Seriously those that read this book know that the MC has the shittiest luck tho some could say "good luck" as well. Although like many xianxia novels the MC does get into sh*t with people who have higher cultivation than him, and overall have trouble coming his way. But this MC is like a shitstorm magnet, seriously in most novels there will be at least 1-2 chapters... more>> of peace and quiet (excluding cultivation time), like a short filler. But the MC after finishing one problem and another one comes, sometimes these troubles stack too.

Though don't misunderstand I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I feel bad for the guy. His life is nothing but easy, which I guess that's why he's quite unique. You understand why he acts the way he does which is not surprising considering the author who wrote this, it's good work and I do recommend it. But get ready for the MC to be met with misfortune over and over again like he has black cloud floating over his head. Seriously I hope it turns out better for you when you make it, cause you deserve it! <<less

This novel has lots of terms, and it’s like reading a dictionary for cultivation and alchemy. It is slow with all the explaining and description, causing you to lose sight of what is currently happening in the novel, but it does gives you an deep insight of its world and its rules. This novel isn’t for everyone and you have to be very patient to enjoy this novel.

The romance doesn’t start until mid or late 100s (since I lost track) but it’s very subtle, and the way is done is... more>> not exactly what you would expect. Well they start acknowledging it until they meet again in 211 I believe. Honestly, it such a small part of the story that the romance tag can be neglected or remove. <<less

i have not finished reading the novel but so far it's good. I saw some of the reviews here on this novel that are simply ridiculous I'd say.

Some are saying he's ruthless, takes revenge on those that harmed him or had malicious intention and doesn't care about the consequences, someone said MC has no motivation or drive to get stronger. Well I'd say it's very idiotic of you to say these things. These stories are in a world where martial arts thrive, where there is no constitution and laws like... more>> our modern world, where strong prays on the weak. In a world like that you have to ruthless otherwise you'll end up dead. And in the world this novel depicts when someone tries to harm you, it's expected that you'd take revenge. There's no thing as human rights in that world. So stop whining about the MC being ruthless. Also those that talked about MCs motivation to get stronger, his best motivation is in this world without strength you'll be at the bottom of the society where you'll have a poor and struggling life and anyone stronger could kill you anytime they want. And don't talk about why would they kill you for no reason, it's a world with rules of the jungle. They don't need a reason. <<less

Honestly, I'm not totally sure how I feel about this novel. It has some really great parts that are probably among my favorite philosophical arcs of any novel (the mortal ones), and yet it also has some incredibly dumb / annoying things (the "romance" especially). I managed to make it almost 1600 chapters before dropping it despite the bad parts, so it deserves at least three stars.

The MC starts out pretty naive, but grows a brain around 100 chapters in (and even before that it isn't too bad, only really... more>> shows a few times). After that he's still much more emotional than I'd prefer and yet is immune to women, which is a rather irritating combination. He isn't against slaughtering people for offending him though, so overall pretty good.

There are the usual xianxia problems like inconsistencies (lifespan is one of the most common, it changes multiple times whenever it's convenient for the story), plot armor, and absurd numbers (which also tend to be inconsistent) but honestly those are nothing compared to how bad the author is at relationships and how he doesn't seem to be self aware about it. As an example, two people meet and enjoy talking for a day or so and then separate for a hundred years. What is their relationship after that? Obviously so in love that they'd die for the other person! That's somehow not even the worst example, and yet romance is a huge driving force for the vast majority of the novel. Having no romance is fine, bad romance can be overlooked, but don't constantly bring it up and make it one of the most important things in the story if you can't do it well.

And yet, despite how often that pissed me off and made me consider dropping the novel, I made it almost 1600 chapters before I did. If you aren't scared off by the shallow romance I'd definitely say to give it a read, the high average rating didn't come out of nowhere. <<less

was 5/5, then the whole avatar thing started and everything turned into shit, writer I don't give a f*ck what you do but you atleast need to keep one identity consistent for the MC. Who the hell wants the MC to have 10 different avatars each having different cultivation with different appearances? Also MC only fights with treatures, wtf is the point of cultivating then? Almost everyone in this novel is only powerful because of treatures, if they turned into a mortal even some random hobo could whip their ass

When... more>> enemies need to get stronger it immediately happens without any consequence. MC spends hundreds of years to jump strong stage to stage because each one needs dao comprehension? Enemies absorb some energy and it's fine.

MC has to spend hundreds of years to barely learn a spell? Heh, enemies just need to read a book and it's fine.

ISN'T THE DIFFERENCE TOO BIG?

his obsession with his parents is also s*upid af, in the first place they were mortals; no matter what he did they would die eventually. Hell, he spent <<less

Finally, I'm done reading. This is my first ErGen novel. All I can say is that this is a Heaven Defying Novel!!

Plot:

The story is somewhat near perfect; there are still some questions left that need to be answered. But overall, it's 4 / 5
So far, the story is not repetitive.
Characters:

... more>> As for the characters, they are well written, that you will notice their existences until the early to the end of the novel.
Pacing:

The pacing is kinda slow from the start to the middle of the story. It only gets rush near the end, but it's still ok.

In the end, the story is good that I rated it 4.7/5.0

I recommend this novel to those who like the main character the same as Fang Yuan (Reverend Insanity) but not as extreme as Fang Yuan.

This story at most no comedy unless you find s*upid/idiotic actions of others as funny XDD... Anyway, this story is 90% serious.

This is one of my best novel I have ever read ever since I started reading Chinese novel.

And 1 of the reason I like this novel is because of the rebellious quality the MC has Which is as the name implies (renegade immortal).
there is nothing like destiny in this novel where every thing will b handed to the MC on a platter of gold, there is no mysterious background or heavenly talented granted to the MC or any bloodline that will enable the MC cultivate fast. Everything... more>> was earned by Wang lin through his struggles. And I also like the slaughter in the novel, mind u it was not an unnecessary slaughter it was a slaughter with meaning. <<less

This is one of the most overrated novels out there. I kept on seeing people praising it for a long time but I kept on hesitating to read it because of the tragedy tag until I run out of decent lns to read and was super bored, so I decided to give it a try.

I'd like to mention first that it's not really a tragedy. While it's true that you can describe the MC's life as tragic since most of the people he meets are either enemies or with hidden... more>> motives, there's a lot of bloodshed and he loses some individuals "close" to him but the author just fails to convey them in a proper way to make you care in the least bit.

Spoiler

*His family clan got almost wiped out, I don't know why he started to care about them for some reason since they treated him badly and he swore to get revenge on them before.
*especially the thing with his wife: He imprisons her in a cave for a dozen of years and asks her to make a pill for him in exchange for her freedom with 0 interactions between the two and out of nowhere, she develops feeling for him. He meets her again after letting her go and accepts her as his wife then proceeds to leave her alone for hundred of years until her lifespan almost reached its end then his spends the remaining like 10 years with her until she dies of old age (while both of them remaining virg*ns btw lmao) after that he realizes that he loves her and starts a very long journey trying yo revive her)

[collapse]

The MC is not likeable, he has no personality and no real objective, He just follows the flow.

The story is very plain, I know that this kind of novels have their ups and downs but I don't remember being hooked by it at any point. If I wasn't very bored and put it on text to speech why playing a game on the side I wouldn't have reached this far to be honest.
The plot of the story is a mess and confusing at times. It feels like the author keeps changing his mind to his own convenience without any considerations.

Spoiler

*He gives the MC the main treasure at first, a heaven defying item that produces rich spiritual energy water and slows time flow while cultivating inside of it, but then he decides to simply cancel it and claims that it only works at low levels of cultivation and becomes nearly a forgotten item.
*He unlocks this broken ability for the MC that gives him the ability to 1 shot almost anyone at his cultivation level or below and have a great impact on higher cultivation but then he realizes that he might have overdone it and drops the ban hammer on it too.
*The looting system is boring since he keeps finding treasures left and right and all the items will be replaced/forgotten at some point.

[collapse]

It's not disastrous however, It's readable and better than a lot of novels out there but compared to ISSTH and AWE I find this to be the worst out of the three. <<less

EDIT2: Nope 4stars because s*upid woman wan'er appears way too many times.

EDIT: It gets way way better!!! I was actually bored a few times in the beginning, but at some point the story reeeally picked up and got super interesting!!! Adding 1 star to my rating for 5 stars!

Honestly I think he's too ruthless. It's one thing to get back at people who harmed you, or even people that may cause you trouble in the future, but random innocents?

This is why I can never be a cultivator I guess.

The romance is terrible, and honestly my least favourite part of this story. I like that MC has a strong bottom line for something, but it makes no sense to me that this would be it. Literally him & wan'er's relationship wasn't that long or that groundbreaking, and he barely felt anything for her while alive. It was after she was gone and he was all alone that he realized he wanted companionship. Yet this obsession was exaggerated to some crazy level where he was almost willing to betray all his teachers, benefactors, friends, and kill them himself???? I love the story after the first few hundred chapters, but near the end this woman comes back soooo many times that I'm really sick and tired of her. It's ridiculous. I like that through romance it emphasizes how lonely and desolate being a cultivator can be, but why does the romance have to be so subpar??? There's nothing special about her at all, it's just that she happened to come into his life at the right time, and most of the story is just him obsessing over her after she's dead.

But also I think this author just sucks at writing romance in general. The latter women that leaves marks in his life are also kinda strange. It's almost like someone helps you pick up your eraser and because of that you are willing to die for him, staying devoted for years and suffering pain worse than death.

Spoiler

Thank goodness he accepted li qianmei though... but I wish he was better to her!!! Regardless if it was due to guilt or gratitude, you made the choice so you need to back it up!!! Esp since blue dream helps him sooo much. Although I wish LQM also had more of an offensive role given her strength, but for some reason after liking him they all become pitiful flower side characters.

[collapse]

I do appreciate how much the story emphasizes the difficulty of everything and utter disparity in cultivation strengths. Most of the time it feels like MC is on the brink of death, one wrong move and he's a goner. So many coincidences together were required for him to grow strong; the fate of countless untold others could be imagined. Even when he's in OP slaughter mode, we can still see his weaknesses very clearly.

MC's growth progress is very logical, well-thought, riddled with life-and-death encounters, and frankly very entertaining to read. Author also doesn't make MC succeed always; he's failed many many times, and up against people way stronger than the sky above his head many many times. Author is also very decisive; amazing treasures can be tossed and broken when necessary, no one (other than MC) necessarily needs to stay alive.

Worldbuilding was also fantastic, and the plot is woven quite well. I won't say it's perfect, but also it's 2000+ chapters so "quite well" should be good enough. Near the end there's a pretty big plot twist, and although interesting it wasn't by any means perfect. In fact, I felt it was very unfortunate.

Spoiler

I FEEL SO BAD FOR SLAUGHTER. MY GOODNESS ME UGH. HE NEARLY EVEN FORGOT HIMSELF. Also, what's up with Ling Tianhou? I like how author tried to give him some sort of additional setting, but it's kinda dumb like if grey-robe is slaughter where did LTH pop out from?

People who say MC is bad, are immature. The MC killed to survive, with the exception of personal vengeance which, in my view, made some sense, people who did not have their parents mu*dered do not have any qualifications to judge the actions of the MC seeking revenge.

Well it's an Er Gen novel, so is it good? Of course it is! But only good.

The novel tries to show the life of Wang Lin from the start to eternity, hes childhood, hes first powerup then revenge, then another powerup, adventure, new enemies, powerup, revenge, lover, power up, revenge, lost lover... tired? Uh yeah the "formula" is Er Gen so even when it's really well written and the development is good, sometimes got myself reading the title and the end of the chapter skipping to the next from 1300-1900... more>> chapter, and guess what, it worked for a lot of chapters.

I dont know if I am burned from Er Gen formula or it's just this one that was too long (2088 chapters) to my taste but in the end the formula was there, it's like NSHBA when the MC asked if the school he was where the weakest one, and if that the case when he moved up they still the weakest and them again and again and hes diretor said "yes I'm sorry", Er Gen has a proper Er Gen Verse and if you already read some of hes novels you know who is the real last boss, you just dont know who is the finger in the novel you are reading, there's always a next place, a next enemy, the girl always got f*cked up and MC needs to find a cure or wait till the end of the novel to reunite, I would like to see some blatant betrayal or a internal conflict with heavy moral choices for a change...

Dont get me wrong, the novel is good but I think it have some heavy filler in some parts and take to long, well issth suffer from the same thing, AWE and PoT got a little less but still, anyway if you like Er Gen verse go for it, bet on what finger you are reading and forget the "true immortal", it's a good read and the end is good too. <<less

Renegade Immortal is surely a unique novel in the character type and the cultivation system as it tends to more of the darker side. The downfall of it is the the clunky and confusing beginning which was somewhat difficult to read. However it improves with the writing captivating you to continue reading. As expected from an Er Gen novel, the romance is somewhat dry. However plot armor is not as prevalent (IMO) as most common ones. It's a fun read

I had high expectations based on people recommending it to me, but I was disappointed. I only made it to chapter ~250, and only because I wanted to see the conclusion of a particular story thread. Perhaps it just isn't a good fit for me

    • The story has very few lighthearted moments, everything is bleak, everyone is evils, friendships are superficial and not long lasting. There are a couple of interesting character moments, but I found it hard to get invested in any character. If you just want a cruel and ruthless MC focused cultivation story then you might actually like this one
    • There isn't much dialogue, or at least it feels that way, you can go a few chapters where the only dialogue is the MC thinking out loud.
    • Time goes by pretty quick, this is just a personal preference of mine, and I realize it kind of contradicts the nature of cultivation, but I don't like it when an arc is interrupted, the MC goes on a side adventure, and then comes back 20 or 200 years later.
    • The translation is pretty frustrating, this is not the novel's fault so I'm not deducting any points for this, but thought I mention it for future readers. The translation isn't bad, its just very poorly edited. I don't mind the poor grammar, I'm terrible at it myself, but what is frustration is that any character name would be spelled 3-5 different ways, sometimes within the same paragraph which gets super confusing.

edit:

so I ended up picking it back up after some people told me to keep trying and caught up.

Ill give it a 3.5 overall but I definitely do think that this author and his works are overhyped.

Yes it is better than a good amount of other cultivation novels but in the end it still has a lot of the same pitfalls. There is a lot of filler, especially the arcs where the MC tries to turn into a moral/sitting there drinking/dreaming, . All it is is a lot of... more>> FAKE DEEP poetic philosophy that sounds so amazing and profound if you have never read another book in your life.

Each of these fake deep arcs last like 30-70 chapters which is why I call them filler since almost nothing happens, all its just an excuse to explain the MCs incoming power up.

the author just pads the word count by repeating/rephrasing the same thing he just said at least three times multiple times in each chapter, it's like a high school student trying to hit the word count on an essay they have to turn in, in 5 hours.

All the females end up dependant on the MC and you will see the phrase

"she bit her bottom lip"

like 4 times in each chapter a potential female love interest shows up. There is no real romance ether, the MC only randomly starts caring about the females after the are gone or dead even tho he didnt really give a damn about them before that. The MC is asexual

All the villains are stereotypical mustache twirling baddies who are just bad beyond reason. All of them scheme in the exact same way against MC and when he flips the script on them they all say the same tired line

"there is no great deep feud between us, give me some face and spare me I promise ill be good"

right after they say that they start scheming again. On the plus side the MC doesnt frequently let those ret*rds off but still it gets annoying seem the same villain basically in new clothes in each arc, rinse and repeat.

  • he pads the story by unnecessarily showing you the reactions of 6 other people basically saying the same thing about an event that just happened.
  • The fight scenes are kinda horrible, everyone is standing in one spot and talking alot and everytime someone teleports to escape someone somehow will always stop it So if you are looking for something groundbreaking this aint it playboi.

    old review at c141:

Ended up dropping due to how boring and typical it became. This is more or less your standard chinese cultivation novel, the only twist is that the MC actually kills people and doesnt let them come back to haunt him later 20 times.

The story started to get bland a bit after you get the typical spirit mentor inside the magical top tier artifact troupe.

The story actually was pretty interesting until about chapter 70 when you have the corpse sect arc and it stays pretty boring, picks back up

a bit around 125, but this isnt worth the time unless you really love novels like this.

The main character has no personality and a lot of the time no real goal or plan, the side characters dont stick around for more than a few chapters and you are not given a reason to care about them

I've heard many people praising this novel to high heavens so I decided to give it a go. I got to chapter 451 and I just can't take it anymore. Multiple times the MC becomes a complete ret*rd even though he is supposed to be this "ruthless and cunning old monster." There is also the absurd and plain wrong use of measurements and the size of things, regarding moving around and teleporting. I just can't deal with the fact that at some points of the story the MC can move... more>> thousands of times faster than earlier without any sort of power up or magic treasure etc.

I really like most of the story, like 9/10 like, but there are way too many minor things that are plain s*upid and I just can't deal with it anymore. When I'm reading a novel I really immerse myself in to the story and focus heavily on what I'm reading so too many s*upid mistakes can ruin it for me.

It feels to me that the author forgets way too many things about his own novel and that leads to all of these minor mistakes in the story. If you can forgive these small mistakes or don't notice them then you probably enjoy this novel a lot, but I wouldn't recommend this novel to any HC fantasy fans.

I'm guessing part of the reason that I'm dropping this novel is that I read everything in one go. So in these five days I spent reading this novel I just got irritated too many times by the mistakes in the story. I probably wouldn't have noticed this if I read less each day, but I blazed through the chapters reading twelve hours a day.

~~~TLDR: If you can look past the large amount of small mistakes in the story you will probably love this novel, because the story itself is top notch. <<less
