This novel is a masterpiece imo. My number 1. Indisputable champion! Er gen's magnum opus!

Story-4.5/5

Characters-4.5/5

... more>> MC coolness factor-it's wayyy over 9000!!!

I came back to edit my review after I finished this novel (which was months ago but I didn't think about it until now so....)

On a serious note, I won't say it's flawless but to me, it's perfect. I love it so much I'm willing to accept it as it is. I'm not saying I wanna fk this novel, I'm not a hopeless pe*vert. I'm just saying if this novel was human person, I'd definitely fuc- I mean make love to her.

It has it's ups and downs. Sometimes u will think about skipping some chapters but sometimes it will make u sleepless at night.

The MC is different... Different from everything I have ever read. Cold, ruthless and decisive but a hopeless romantic (imo. I said IMO!)

Also, he is not some lucky bastard with plot armor who obtains treasures or inheritances like it's nothing. He is not a genius with absolute talent either. He's just a stubborn guy with a heaven defying will
Spoiler

who just wants to bring his dead lover back....

[collapse]

Almost everything he achieves is through his own effort. What? U don't like the almost? Gimme a fkin break! He deserves a windfall or two! He's been through enough already!

This novel has made me happy, sad, excited and a lot of other things... I hope u guys will love it too.

P. S. Why the fk can't I change the star rating!? <<less

I really like this novel. Although at some chapters, I was confuse about the story, and the beginning of the story was quite slow, but I really like about the development of the main charachter and the plot as well. The MC is not really OP, his sthrength was built in a good pace along the story.

It is not like typical xianxia when the MC received mock and redicule from peoples for being worthles and then the MC killed them all. In this novel, the MC receive many setback, and... more>> know when to go forward and when to backoff. For me, the story was quite unpredictable and I really recommend to read it.

Maybe, the only thing that lacking in this novel is romance. The MC is quite dull and skeptic with everyone. Anyway, maybe this is the novel charachteristic, "Do not believe anybody except yourself". <<less

not the most comfortable Er Gen novel as it's bleak at times (not as tragic as PotT but not a happy or fun story). If you love AWE and thought ISSTH was boring then you will probably find this worse, as there is little humor in it to soften the story. This is my favorite Er Gen novel so far (I find AWE to be childish and a little too Shounen for my liking).

WL starts out fairly innocent but quickly learns how harsh the cultivation world is; lies, plots, double-crossing,... more>> and mu*der are the norm. No one trusts anyone else for good reason. There is very little warmth in this story, mostly in the form of fleeting frenemies that disappear for hundreds of chapters, reappear for a night of drinking and reminiscing and vanish again. He spends a lot of time dwelling on how lonely he is.

the MC is a complicated character and for the first half of the novel I kept wanting to like him, but his actions were horrible. There is, however, character growth, though it takes a while to grow out of his all-black-edgy-phase from the first several hundred chapters.

after re-reading this all I can say is I hope Er Gen grows out of his current gag story phase and gives us an awesome Immortal or Ghost story that measures up to his first three in the series. <<less

This is by far the best translated chinese fantasy novel I have ever read. You might say that that is just my personal opinion. That might be so but this opinion is coming from a guy that have read almost every translated fantasy Chinese novel there is to read. To be honest, I think this story is much much better than Er Gen'a most popular novel, I Shall Seal The Heaven. The story itself is very complex and never and I mean NEVER boring. The story also contain a lot... more>> of mysteries that will keep you on the tip of your toe waiting to find out all the answers. All of the story arcs are well developed and areally all very intricately connected and not just there just so that the author could make more money. And as for the main character, Wang Lin, my god this guy experienced so many tragedies, he's like the Peter Parker from the Spiderman movies. But it's from those tragedies that made him such a compelling, such an intriguing, and such a developedifficult character. I think he might be the best or one of the best characters to ever be introduced in wuxia and xianxia novels. Even now, I am mesmerized by how complex and well made his character is. <<less

Yeah, I'll stop there. Despite maybe some good qualities, like the non repetitive setting, I have two major problems.

  • One is the fact that this story is too non repetitive actually, like you can call it a wuxia like that's FULL RANDOM. An example is :
    Spoiler

This ruler was completely green. When it appeared, it emitted a powerful fragrance. The youth took a deep breath and without a word, pointed the ruler forward. The ruler shook and a large black mushroom grew out of it. The mushroom detached from the ruler and floated in the air.
The youth’s expression was serious as he quickly took out something from his bag of holding and threw it. Wang Lin saw a flash of red light as a red wasp flew toward the mushroom and devoured it with only a few bites.

The wasp suddenly became several times bigger. It was the size of a fist. It let out a scream and charged toward Wang Lin.

Although all of this sounds slow, it all happened in the blink of an eye.

    [collapse]
That's just one ridiculously random element in this story among others. We are still at a 'low' level of cultivation and the author keeps on launching new name and techniques on top of his head with no explanation. Speaking of which.
  • The second big problem is the lack of explanation for everything, doubled with the high number of useless informations we get : At first we have the composition of the MC family, that will never be useful, then the MC after a series of events become immortal. The only solid informations we get about immortals is that they are person above us that can fly in the sky. and then we are introduce to a high number of elements such as pills, plants, sword aura, spirit beasts, ect... at a very fast pace with little to no explanation about those terms each time. Hell, I still don't know why there is such a big fuss about flying swords in this story. I cannot explain, even with my experience in the genre why the MC gets so desperate to become immortal with no understanding of this world, why he is sometimes trustful or distrustful, and I have no understanding about how fast his development is compared to other peers of his age in the big world. That's also why I can't like any relationship in this story.
All in all I'm sure he will become a badass warrior after the events I'm currently reading, but I'm also sure the problems above won't change. The MC keeps growing, but each time he meets somebody who could give more understanding of the world around he abandons them. All in all I can't bother to follow this MC and this absence of storyline.

This is a very good novel as it has a fresh approach where the MC is not a good guy. He is not a bad guy either but he doesn't care about justice or what's right or wrong. He is incredibly intelligent. The story has one of the most unique romances I have ever read and has a lot of action. It also has powerful villains and they don't die with a single punch but have plot armour as well and there is a lot of shadowing of future enimes.... more>> This also shows us an MC who grow old and get old mentally as there have been MC who are thousands year old but still have a young nature.

Although not the greatest ever written by the auther but still ones of the best around. A good read and since half has been translated you get a gist of the story. <<less

I haven't read the whole thing, but I think that I have read enough to make a little review.

It's a unique novel, I can really feel every lesson that Wang Lin learns through the novel.

Extremely realistic, is not like other Chinese novels where the MC finds a treasure and in the next morning is super powerful, or those MC that level up as easily as taking a walk in the park. Wang Lin struggles throughout the whole novel. Nothing is easy for him and we can feel the happiness when... more>> we see the results of his great efforts.

The fights are amazing, as every Er Gen novel, and we also can feel the excitement.

aw heck, it seems that in emotionally invested in this sh*t lol <<less

This novel is in my book a great read, sure the MC is to be honest pretty one dimensional in being a lunatuc mass mu*derer. The setting of the world is pretty dark and everyone is only out for benefits.

Spoiler

To give some perspective the MC mostly just runs around killing people for benefits. The MC also later on dies but his soul escapes and after hundreds of years of eating up other demonic souls somehow transforms into a soul eating monster.

On top of this he choses to cultivate a body cultivation that works in the way that he places his main body into the crust of the world he was born in and slowly absorbs all the worlds energy, eventually leading him to become somewhat of a godlike existence but at the expense of sucking the planet dry thus killing it and everyone who lives of it. So yeah pretty evil MC.

This is also somewhat of the weird part of the story since the first 1/5 of the story is about the MC while the rest of the story is pretty much only about a clone the MC uses to cultivate the mystic arts at the same time.

[collapse]

The MC does have a lover but it is frankly more of a one sided love from a girl suffering from stockholm syndrom.

Spoiler

The MC at one point need to make a pill but has no experience or knowledge with pill making. So to fix this MC's solution is to kidnap a beautiful female from a pill sect and force her to work for him. He doesn't really treat her badly except for the fact that she has to do what he says or die and she is stuck in a cave alone for most of the time, at one time she is left alone for a 100+ years I believe and is eventually set free after he had gotten what he wants.

However somewhere along the way all that mold in the cave probably got to the girl and she fell in love with the MC.

Several hundred years later they reunite and we found out that the girl has always loved MC and been waiting for him, MC is somewhat moved by her dedication and accepts her love but because of cultivation has to leave shortly after getting together with her since you know plot gotta move forward.

So he then leaves again after a short time together and as far as I've read not seen her again for several hundred years

[collapse]

There is almost no humour in this story so people who read ISSTH before this might not enjoy this one as much.

Overall the story is about a villan doing villanous things while growing stronger by climbing a mountain of corpses.

Compared to many other novels the MC is not overpowered for the most part (the author makes him to strong at one point and later removes this power), cultivation is slow and hard, preparation is needed together with precious items and even then it can take a hundred years to break through to the next level. So there is none of that unreasonable plot armor where MC is losing, get's mad and jumps several lvls in cultivation thus instantly winning. <<less

Pro (s) :

  1. Er Gen. Yes, the author. I like and have faith in his works.
  2. The story isn't too cliche.
  3. No harem! Imo, no matter how good a story is, it'll be ruined when those walking b**bs with jade skins get on stage.
con (s) :

  1. The MC is dark, but his personality isn't strong enough for you to be able to remember him outside of the story.

Totally awesome. Just started reading it, and I already caught up within two days. Just like coiling dragon I could not stop clicking next page. The storytelling is fantastic. The reader gets to see a common youth transform from a naive but smart cultivator into a cunning and ruthless immortal. Although there is a lot of closed door training montages, this is by far one of my favorites CN.

This is a complete cultivation novel and, though there isn't much romance, it's well balanced and the MC is well powered and ruthless enough for my liking. No harem content for all those who hate harems.. 4.5/5, feeling good so let it be 5!

In all honesty I rate this 3.7 But, due to this being the series that got me into reading Chinese novels I have no problem rating it higher. My Manga-Novel

Story: Main character enters the world cultivation. His views change as he struggles to survive and grow stronger.

Pro's :
- Character Growth - You see Wang Lin grow and understand why he makes the decisions he does at different points in his life. DON'T BELIEVE the other reviews about him being totally cruel and ruthless. It's only a portion of... more>> his life (which for the most part is kill or be killed).
- Several truly enjoyable archs

Cons:
Underdeveloped 'perspective' of character. The author shows you the circumstance which result in this character, without much internal dialogue. However, Er Gen fixes this in subsequent novels such as A Will Eternal

Overall, I recommend ISSTH or A Will Eternal because I believe they are more entertaining. However, if you have the time, check this novel out. <<less

UPDATED REVIEW:

Dam son! Guess putting in the work paid off. After chapter 500 the story takes off! From around that point on it just gets better and better, and Er Gen starts to work his magic. I'm glad to say that I can safely bump the rating up to 5 stars :)

TL;DR: Bumpy and confusing beginning (with a few good bits here and there), but excellent at the middle and later stages of the story.

... more>> OLD REVIEW:

No idea how this got 4.1/5... this story is a mess compared to ISSTH. Too much of the story is boring and confusing, and Wang Lin's unemotional approach to life makes it hard to connect with him or even care about anything he does. The best word I can use to describe this story is "dry" or "sterile".

In most series, the MCs cultivate because they've got a goal they want to accomplish. In the meantime, they tend to get s**ked into drama that involves other colourful / likeable or detestable characters, and so you care about what's going on and want the MC to be strong enough to change it. In this series, Wang Lin tends to just watch the drama from the outside and doesn't do much unless someone confronts him. He doesn't usually make friends, and even on the VERY rare occasions when he does he's not good to them.

Spoiler

He literally ditches his love interest for decades-centuries at a time. He also encounters a daughter figure, but he effectively robs her of a normal childhood and then abandons her so ruthlessly that you can't help but lose all respect for him as a character.

[collapse]

If this wasn't an Er Gen story I'd have dropped it by now. I can only hope that Er Gen gets into his stride and the story gets better from 500ish+. <<less

It started out good, but pretty much like every other chinese Xianxia/Xuanhuan fic it descends into pointlessness. For a fic like this a relatively big deal was made out of the MC's attachment to his parents and family but in typical Xuanhuan story fashion that disappears quite quickly. One thing that really bothers me about these stories is the absolute pointless mu*ders and other crimes that the MC commits, just because he can and because in the past he's seen others do so. There's never any attempt made to rise... more>> above baser nature, to strive for a better life. Morality and ethics are seemingly foreign concepts to the MCs to be discarded at the soonest possible opportunity and never looked for again. As is typical of these stories, Xian Ni is no different in its treatment of women, sexism is rampant. Xian Ni just kinda drags on for a long time. The central mystery of the Bead is pushed back further and further.

Ultimately, it's hard for me to really tell how bad the story is versus the quality of the translation, though I'm inclined to think that the story quality is actually quite low. I will confess, however, that some of the scenarios and situations that Wang Lin finds himself in are quite intriguing. <<less

As I read along I came to realize the very simple fact. This MC is just a really a mass mu*derer who just leaves deaths everywhere he goes. His life is literally worthless as he doesn’t bring any value to people/places/etc. In his adventures. In conclusion, the MC is just a god damn calamity of death.

One of the best xianxia i've ever read, but there's a problem and it is the romance.

It's bad. Pretty bad.

You can abolutely read this. It's Er'gen first finished novel so his writing in the beginning is not good but it gets better with the time. I can say that after chapter 200 it only tends to get better

I always thought that Er Gen stands for quality, but this one is a mess. It lacks focus, it lacks direction, it is a train wreck.

At the beginning, everything makes sense, with Wang Lin struggling to get a foot into the door of immortality. He faces set-backs, he finds his golden finger, he starts cultivating.

And then the roller-coaster starts!

Spoiler
  • His golden finger, the stone bead, allows him to train 1000x faster than everyone else. But after the first technique (the grabbing spell), he never seems to utilize it anymore to -I don't know- master alchemy, master crafting, master the other techniques in the sect. But no, he does not.
  • His other golden finger (because one is not enough), the old grandpa Situ Nan, teaches him some OP spells, which results in Wang Lin cultivating the death realm magic. It is so powerful, that he can instantly kill everyone on the same level. It is in fact so powerful, that -after 300 chapters of the MC being virtually undefeated- the author decides to remove it. Lol.
  • Every time the author moves to the juicy parts of the story (like cultivating as a mortal, taking another identity,...) there is some arbitrary time limit involved. His avatar has only 30 years to live, Wan-er reincarnates in 19 years, he has three months to cultivate his Celestial Slaughter art,... WHY?!
  • Talking about the avatar, the author just decides that the avatar is better than the main body, removes the time-limit and then puts the main body to slumber...
  • The MC also does not know what he wants to do. Become immortal? Rescue Situ Nan? Save his family? Save Wan-er? There is no long-term goal involved, the MC just gets dropped random goals, then completes them and gets another.
  • The MC has the the ultimate treasure - the stone bead - but instead of just finding the last element (something he easily completed four times before, when he was thousands of times weaker), he post-pones it every. single. time.
  • Speaking of Wan-er, this is another wasted development. So much potential for an actual sweet romance, but the MC is "unmoved by women". Guess what? He changes his heart just when Wan-er is dying and gets the sudden new goal of reincarnating her.
  • Also about the "unmoved by women" thing. Of course the MC gets involved with another heavenly woman who releases aphrodisiac and then he finally loses his v**ginity. Totally random.
  • Did I talk about the world? It is a mess (who would have guessed). There is lots of cruelty behind the scenes (I approve), but also stuff that is really arbitrary. For example the corpse sect, which plays a big role for around ten chapters, only to be instantly forgotten a realm later. Far later it plays a role again, but why waste time with it?
  • One thing that really bothers me, is the fact that the MC is so much smarter than everyone else. He plays the 50.000 years old monsters like a fiddle, and they are somehow surprised by his schemes every time.
  • Also the whole novel only involves what I call "upwards cultivation". The MC is always in the weaker position. When he is in the stronger position, he doesn't deal with someone weaker, but instead there appears someone that is still stronger. It is as if the weaker cultivators don't play a role anymore.
  • About the fights: A mess. Random techniques and treasures thrown around. My recommendation: Skip! It is a waste of time, as the MC always wins.
[collapse]

I probably didn't even scratch the surface of things that are messy in this novel. How the MC changes from the demonic path, how he suddenly has a heart when dealing with a loli girl, how all the dates, times and prices make no sense, and so forth.

In my opinion, this is not a novel but a scratch pad of ideas. The author didn't plan ahead, but moves from one idea to the next. Some work out pretty well, some are terrible. The sad part is that this novel is still miles ahead of other novels of the same genre. I mean, I read it for around 2.000 pages before I stopped. 3* <<less

To start, I would say this novel is good, and I recommend it to everyone, if you haven't read it, do it now. I will base my opinion in two things:

1- If this is your fill Novel, or is one of your first (Up to 4) you can give this Novel a rating of 5 Stars and claim it to be a Masterpiece. If you belong to this group, and haven't read it yet, don't waste time with reviews and GO!

2- If you have read dozen of Novels from many... more>> genres, author, plots, and such (like more than 30s, which is where I stand) I would rate it lower. My Score for this novel is 3.7 Stars (More inclined to 4* than to 3*), reasons? Well..:

Spoiler

a) At start everything is good, like every novel we readers are immersed in this new world expecting to read the choices the MC will do to become strong, in one of these choices, he stated to become a bad ass dark character, after becoming a soul who absorbed other souls which I liked it since it was different to most mainstream MC from other novels (remember when I said about Numbers of Novel read?) but later the MC decided to turn back to a nice boy scout. Later Author couldn't decide if make MC good or Tyrant, you cant be both, much less break your own rules and take only a side.
This is why, for me, Leylin Farlier (Warlock on Magus world) is my favorite MC ever!

b) The Dead Wife Plot, I never liked it on ISSTH never liked it on DE and on any other Novel, Author used the dead wife to move the MC by the nose for 1500 chapters, YES the wife comes back in the end, besides the Plot she has no value.

I never understand why Authors do this, if the wife dies MC could just simply Get revenge and move on with their lives, what is the point of this wishful Fulfillment they want to create on every novel, where MC is Living Happily Ever After? Is like this Novel is directed to those Beta Males, NEET, Hikikomoris (insert derogatory of male with with low self-esteem) of all the choices in one. Making guys like me who had many GF at teen, had two marriages and some side Sexfriends baffled with the attachment Author gives to MC's LIs (unless is the first one which betrays, etc. etc.)

C) Relationship with people is good and bad, most of the times BAD, he is good with his teachers, and some followers, but these are just for Word Count Sake, in no time you will be tired of the random gibberish the followers create just to expand the chapters, no wonder this is a 2088 chapter novels I wouldn't complain if it wasn't for....

d) Rushed endings, YES!!!! The Cancer of most Novels out there, the author fills the Novel with thousands of chapters to just finish the most important part of the Novel in less than 2 chapters, many things were solved in a whim and many characters were just mentioned, it just doesn't happens here, it happens everywhere out there.

Working only on those Novels who have a Second Part, or a Related Universe's Novel, but here is not the case.

[collapse]

Note that these are my views as a seasoned Novel Reader, this one is good, a must read for everyone. <<less

This is by far one of the best novels I have read. I used to read this novel on a different site and dropped it cause I could not make sense of what is happening as the author throws MC in different situations and it feels I am taking a chemistry exam as there are a lot of things to remember. I dropped it when the MC is in SEA OF DEVILS and went on a slaughter. I took it again after some time when wuxiaworld started translating it, since... more>> I ran out of novels to read and I really liked ISSTH writing style in the first half of the novel. That is the best decision I have ever made.

CONS:

1. The story is a mess until WANG LIN enters the "SEA OF DEVILS" secret place with other very powerful Nascent and soul formation cultivators as the MC is always running and there is no order for the story to develop due to this.

2. As some people have explained, I would consider the whole story before "Sea of Devils" secret place as a prologue as the story changes to a different style from there.

PROS:

  1. Everything else after MC reaches Nascent Soul and that's when the real DAO seeking starts.
2. The MC is very relatable and He is not s*upid. I have not noticed a single moment in this novel

where the MC behaves s*upidly.

3. He has some starter cheat in the form of "BEAD", but I would say most of the power MC gained is

due to his own hard work and we never feel that he got lucky.

4. This novel has one of the best philosophies on life when the MC strives to find his own way and

purpose

For those who have dropped this after reading the initial chapters, I understand as

I was the same. If you have some time and have nothing to read and willing to spend some time I would advise you to pick this novel again and complete till he reaches soul formation stage as that's when we would know the direction of this novel in the future. <<less
