The updates for this one stops at 53, but if you read on the TapRead app it goes up to about 150 chapters at the time of writing this review.

I was drawn to this title because of the main character, the female lead He Danggui. She's a very resolute character at the start. Though I skimmed reading through the grievances of her past life (it was much too depressing for me to take in detail), it is very clear just how much she suffered because of how motivated she is... more>> to live a better life. Also, revenge wasn't even exactly in her plans. She does take revenge, of course, but usually it's after the other person started scheming against her. It's not as petty as face-slapping for the sake of face-slapping, rather she thoroughly digs at the person until there is no room to retreat or shift blame. The climax of the first arc, which takes place in a temple where she was to be buried, is quite dramatic (and a little bit silly, considering HDG is 10 at this point) but very satisfying and fun to read. She wipes the floor with the head nuns who tried to take advantage of her or otherwise treat her and her servant maid poorly.

But, noticed that I said "at the start" in the beginning there. There's a reason for that. But first, a bit of context for the premise.

In her previous life, HDGlived pretty pitiably. Her father (i think) divorced her mother, or just left, and forced the two of them to return to the mother's maiden family, whom all treated her like sh*t. It was especially bad since HDG's mother retreated to a temple to pray and HDG was a non-confrontational and timid person. Later, after being bullied relentlessly by her cousins, she marries as a concubine to an imperial prince, Prince Zhou, and devotes her life to him. It's a bit vague on what exactly she did, something along the lines of running an intelligence organization and even giving him innovative business ideas (that he later used for his own benefit). HDG also lost her children thanks to Prince Zhou's other wives, before finally being schemed against to the point where she and her daughter die horribly and tragically in a water prison. Then, she reborns to the time when she was 10 years old. The time she reborns is also particularly special, since HDG was already announced dead and had a coffin prepared for her and everything. (She literally wakes up in her tiny coffin, which is so metal I love it.)

The first arc deals with HDG's life at the temple, up until her return to the Luo family mansion (her mother's maiden family home). And it's a solid arc. You get to see HDG feel out the situation at the temple and trick others into underestimating her. She even makes two friends, a young nun who becomes her maid and another older nun who has an awesome past that deserves to be its own short story offshoot.
Spoiler

She was a wealthy businesswoman who owned a restaurant, and her husband's family tried to scheme against her. She went against them in court with irrefutable evidence on her own bc her husband did not step up to support her, and won the case. She then retired to become a nun. It's a lot more dramatic than that, I'm just terrible at describing it.

[collapse]
During HDG's stay at the temple, she also meets a mysterious young boy who is injured and possibly (definitely) hiding from imperial officials, who decide to stay at the temple. After HDG uses their help to sniff out the rot and rats of the temple, she returns home. The Luo family mansion takes up the second arc, and the Chengxui Academy is the third arc.

And the first arc? It's pretty good! HDG is resourceful and decisive, while also being able to enjoy life better than she ever did in her last life. It's a mix of intrigue with slice-of-life and doesn't wander too much with the plot. It does get a little weird when nearly all the imperial officers (there's 4-5 of them) fall in love with HDG, even though they're all like 10 years older than her, but whatever that's a small thing. I can live with that, it's like a female lead halo.

But then when the story moves to the second arc, things get... confusing?

I don't know why but when I was reading up to this point, the narration felt like it went off on tangents way too much. The tangents would have some relevance to the "current events" of the plots, but sometimes they were extremely minimal. For example, nearly a chapter's worth of text was dedicated to how HDG's aunt tried and failed to get permission to bathe in the natural hot springs on the Luo mansion grounds. It would talk about how angry this aunt was that her nieces and mother-in-law implied she was dirty, that she couldn't satisfy her husband, or how they'd cart the spring water to the residences. And the connection to the main plot? Luo Old Madam permitted HDG to get some carts full of spring water in return for her filial piety or whatever. That was it. I was just.... reading it, I stopped on multiple occasions asking, "Why am I reading this? Why am I supposed to care about this?" And, of course, that's just one example. This happens more than once and I can't even remember what was going on in the story at times. It's just too wordy!!!

Another complaint I have after the first arc is how wishy-washy and "lazy" HDG becomes. She showed genuine interest and excitement at being able to practice martial arts, which she couldn't do in her last life, but then refuses to actually practice it at all. Instead, she needs to rely on another person to help her regulate her Qi. We have read about her grievances and how much she suffered thanks to Prince Zhou, but when an opportunity arises to deal with him, she hesitates over and over again and misses her chance to kill him. When faced with an incredibly annoying, obstinate, and selfish man, she does nothing really to stop him from proposing he take her as his concubine or mess around with her. It's so frustrating!! It's like her resolve was left behind at the temple! She becomes less and less like the her from the first arc of the story and it got to the point where I had to stop reading it, lest I get a migraine from the frustration.

It's such a shame, too, because while HDG doesn't show any signs of (positive) character development, I think she has the capacity to be ruthless and even cruel, which would have been neat to see. But, so far, HDG's character is becoming more flimsy and it doesn't pull me in as more. I suspect this change might be to develop more "romance" elements in the story, as two potential Male Leads show up in this arc. I may go back to this once more chapters are released and I can read them in succession, but I have to drop it for now in disappoint.

Also, the translation is a bit rough. It's not to the point where the story is incomprehensible, but it can get annoying when the grammar becomes broken at times. <<less

Danggui is a strong, clever female lead who wishes to obtain revenge against those who have wronged her in the first life.

She has been reborn in her past 10year old self and is using her knowledge of the past to gain advantages at the temple she was reborn at.

Spoiler

It is satisfying to read her strategies as she is able to build up her strength, reobtain her locket, and become the "Master" of a future influential strategist. However, it is a bit creepy reading about how multiple men have fallen in love with her 10year old self. Even though the different men initially thought she was insignificant, she catches their attention due her to knowledge and cleverness.

[collapse]

Regarding her love life, as of right now,

Spoiler

No clear male lead yet. There is an unidentified male whose life she saved. Then there are 3 imperial guards who fall for her, which is slightly unbelievable since she is 10years old. One already wants to propose marriage, but I'm hoping he isn't the male lead since he has an issue of saving females who are in trouble. Two others are already married, with one already having a daughter and the other deciding he has a crush on her when he comes as the matchmaker for his friend ??. So as of Chp 79, I'm hoping for the unidentified male.

[collapse]

If you were rooting for Gao Jue

Spoiler

prepare to be disappointed in Chp 61. After he finds out during his marriage ceremony that his sweetheart who has died is replaced by his sweetheart's half sister, he takes in 8 Concubines who look similar to his deceased sweetheart. When 2 of the concubines gave birth to a son and daughter, his crazed wife gouged out the eyes of the concubines. Gao Jue doesn't even uphold justice for them and sends them to a nunnery, then has bodyguards protect the remaining concubines but gives his two children for the bloodthirsty wife to raise. For being an imperial guard, his actions are cowardly and s*upid and his children will definitely suffer. At his time, being confronted by Zhiyuan/Lynx, he can even think of Danggui?!

[collapse]

Luckily she is focused more on improving herself and gaining strength rather than love. She is slowly gaining her inner strength but she is not OP and is trying to use her knowledge to gain advantage. This novel has a lot of potential and looking forward to seeing where it will go.

Note: the author does like to present detailed scenes regarding the imperial guards for readers to get to know them better. In addition, the Author sometimes goes into long paragraphs to explain past histories of the characters when it could be explained in a few sentences. I tend to skim over these sections since it is so verbose.
Spoiler

also one of the imperial guard's sister is a Transmigration from the future.

Currently on chapter 100 (thanks to google translate) I must say the protagonist is not like other protagonists on similar genre that is super cruel and kill anyone who wronged her. Not everyone is a villain too. The plot is unpredictable and until now I don't have any idea who will be the male lead. My only complaint is the story is super slow paced. Even the casual conversation with a servant can be as long as 6 chapters. This might bore people with short patience and people who want... more>> more action. <<less

I like the characters and the story. The only problem I have is that when the author introduces a new character it turns into this really long info dump of the characters back story. I get that it's all info that's probably needed at some point. I think this is going to turn into a really intricate political type story line. It's just that these info dumps sometimes last multiple chapters and make the story drag on. I'm hopeful this will stop once the author gets all the pieces in... more>> place. Frankly, this is what a good editor is for. <<less
