But her husband came out early and returned late, and seldom spoke to her.

Yin Hui tried her best to warm his heart, but he brought back a widowed cousin to take care of.

Yin Hui: No way!

Husband: Go to bed first, we will talk about it tomorrow morning.

The result was that on that very night, Yin Hui suddenly went ten years back in time.

4.5⭐

This is the third book I've read of the same author. And this is the one I least liked. Not because, it was a flop per se. It may be because I was apprehensive about the ML for half the novel.

Our FL, Yin Hui, Princess Consort Shu, goes back ten years in time after her first fight with her husband, Wei Luo. She suspects him to still be in love with his cousin sister (which is absolutely NOT true by the way).

Yin Hui resolves to live her own life freely... more>> devoting herself to her children and maintaining the basic relationship and responsibility as Wei Luo's wife. But of course, despite being an ice lump of a husband, our ML, Wei Luo, with his care regains her heart. Even the misunderstanding gets cleared up.

Yin Hui was an average FL. Her love for her children was obvious but I was skeptical about her own feelings for the ML, Wei Luo, most of the time.

Wei Luo himself was the typical cold-faced male lead. He was just THIS close to becoming a cardboard. But we also got see his warmth and care for Wei Heng. He gave his children the love and attention that he lacked in his own childhood. His love for Yin Hui may not have been obvious at first, but from the extras we see his perspective in the previous life and understand his care for her more. Honestly, this man was so s*upid sometimes😭😭. His love for his father was also highlighted at times.

From the extras, it's obvious that the actual destiny of our main couple along with their children is already set. There may be some deviations but things still work out in the end. So I'd say that FL's rebirth was more to help the people around her than herself and her family.

There is political intrigue but there is more of familial slice of life. I liked the warm atmosphere of the ML's family despite them being part of royalty.

However, the best of them is Wei Luo's father, King Yan/ Emperor Yongping. He may scold his children in anger sometimes but I'd have to admit that he was a good father. He treated all his children fairly as much as possible. He was definitely a wise emperor and ruler who did not let his emotions influence the bigger picture. And he may even have been a good husband.

Grandfather Yin, Yin Yong, finally enjoyed his old age peacefully. I'm glad for Yin Lang. He deserved better and he definitely got it. The second family got what was coming for them. Yin Wen should burn in hell. Thank God, he got his just desserts.

Wei Yang's ending seemed a bit comical and abrupt to me. But oh well. Xu Qingwas deserved a better husband for real. Da Lang unfortunately got caught in the crossfire. At least, his ending wasn't like the young emperor, Wei Ang.

The second couple, Wei Yan and Ji Xianxian were hilarious. Her character progress was satisfying. I'm glad that she did not turn out to be another cannon fodder.

Loved Wei Xuan and Fu Shan's dynamics. I was really afraid that Fu Shan would be wronged at first but thankfully, things worked out at the end.

There's not much to say about Wei Jing and Wang Junfang, I guess.

The pairing of Feng Teng and Liu Qiuniang was unexpected but delightful especially considering the past life.

There's also Wei Ying and Cui Yu. Somebody was definitely cutting onions when they finally got their happy ending💖😭😭

And finally, Wei Heng, ML and FL's first son, was the real MVP for both lives👍🏻👍🏻

I really really loved this novel. It may not have been perfect. But in historical romance genre in Cnovels, it is definitely in my top 20. Would recommend! <<less

This story really is 'how to be an obedient wife obediently with minimal fuss because you are powerless and you husband controls you so might as well make the best of it.' I feel like I got gently boiled into thinking 'the husband is always right!' Because the lesson in these 400 chapters is; if only the MC spoke up more then everything would've been fine. Really it's her fault for being so s*upid. ML is a prideful and face-saving man who finally self reflects in the last 100 chapters... more>> of the story. Apparently it's considered a 'win' for the female MC that ML goes from disrespecting her for years to 'thawing' and becoming barely tolerable with minimal affection. And because he does so little, when he actually does something good, it feels like a HUGE achievement. Let's be real; the only reason he didn't keep concubines for ages is because he has a cleanliness issue and not because he deeply loved the MC. He's a man who holds laws and traditions above all. If he didn't feel an ick about bed stuff, he would've simply married anyone his father ordered him to. MC was not special to him for years, and his 'affection' is borne out of convenience and length of time. Basically they've been married for long enough and his wife is smart and obedient and never went against him so he likes her. She pandered to him to his tastes so overtime he became more willing to 'indulge' her with the bare minimum. He loves his kids, which is the best thing he has going for him.

ML is so incredibly lucky he was born royalty because he is a completely unlikable fellow. He doesn't speak to anyone, barely to his mom, and the smallest bit more to his wife. His royal status meant he's pampered as people have to take him seriously. Cold, self important and a bit hypocritical. He's gets annoyed that MC smiled at him in public when he came back from war. But if she hadn't smiled, he would've been annoyed that she didn't look happy to see him. I had to laugh when he tells MC to just tell him when she's upset so he'll fix it. Way to put the burden of communication on the woman. Frankly, considering MC's fire in the beginning to now, it feels more like MC gaslighted herself into thinking 'it could be worse, this is fine'.

She did SO MUCH for him in the previous life and he treated her just as coldly for 10 years, that it feels exhausting but also realistic that this is the best you can do when marrying royalty. Be glad that they don't beat you, that they protect your status as the main wife and take care of the kids. The ML will do the bare minimum and you woman, should bow to your husband who is your heaven and earth because that's all your good for. He loves her but for 300 chapters, MC wasn't convinced and that's not counting the TEN YEARS before. So you can imagine exhausting their relationship was. Worst part is hiw the novel subtly puts down all aspects of MC and showcases ML as in the right. The ONLY thing MC did in the new life was refuse to downplay her wealth and sometimes buy herself good stuff and for her kids. And even that turns into a 'lesson' that ML teaches her and the kids about being too 'extravagant' and MC demures that he's right. On a separate note, I do like the MC. She's doing her best. And I actually really like the overall plot. That's the most unique part of this novel. The building politics, of MC's father-in-law having to fight for his life and rebelling, taking over the capital and becoming Emperor and then managing the fall out from that. Very cool.

I'd recommend reading the Second Extra chapters of ML finally chasing MC for once and learning to treat her well. Just read those and don't get boiled!!! <<less

I really liked this novel. Before the return, for being a merchant's daughter, the MC tries to be noble so as not to embarrass her husband and treats her son with harshness and becouse it, he grows distant from her like the ml's copy. With the second chance, she just wants to love her son and save the grandfather who raised her. I liked the growth of the main couple, especially since not everything was what it seemed in the past life.

But if I had to say what pleased me... more>> most, it would be the emperor (mc's father-in-law). He was one of the best monarchs I've seen in all the chinese novels I've read so far. He was a good father, a good ruler, and as far as was allowed, a good husband. He did not blindly favor an only child, but he also had in mind the conscience to customs.

I liked mc's children (super cute) and their relationship with their parents (and grandfather).

The extra chapters were also very good. The first part would be the return of MC and ML to before the wedding where MC refused and ML had to chase her (lol) and the second part for what would happen if she didn't go back in time. In this part I was happy that after everything was resolved the second son and the daughter of the return of time were born even if a little later. In short, a great novel, very well written and without holes. <<less

... more>> Oddly enough, the vibe of this novel reminds me of "To be a Virtuous Wife".

It has that same mundane and understated quality but with less complexity and kinder characters.

So if you have (unlike me) enjoyed TBVW, I think this novel might be right up your alley.

***

The couple: Reborn MC, daughter of the richest merchant + cold and indifferent ML, shu son of a prince. Their relationship was taunt in the first life due to their difference in class and utter lack of communication.

Once reincarnated to a year after their wedding and the birth of their son, MC decides not to be afraid of our frigid and stoic ML and live her life to the fullest.

Our MC, having gone through 10 years with ML in the first life, has now a good grasp of the relationships needed to navigate the backyard of a Royal family and how to establish herself. So while there could have been opportunities to create a bit of tension between houses/courtyards, there's none really. Our MC's got it all figured out and since there's no genuine antagonist or villain either, it makes things somewhat peaceful & uneventful.

What really saved this novel imo is the MC's natal family & her kids. They give the story depth and very much needed warmth. I wouldn't categorize this as a romance or a slice of life, but more as a chronicle of the 10 years they spent together as a married couple as they adapt to each other or specifically, the ML grows emotionally. This bit lasts around 100 chapter and then we have politics and battles (without MC as a real protagonist) for the next 88. The later parts are actually more fun and sweeter, since they don't center around the two.

Honestly, I didn't like the ML for more than half of story. He later became more gentle (i.e. Domesticated) and grew to be more palatable. The kids were again the cutest part.

Overall, it's not my personal cup of tea. All I can say is that this novel, while not quite fun/entertaining, was a passable way to kill time. And I managed to read it from cover to cover, which is rare lately.

MTL is super decent <<less

This novel was well-written and I enjoyed it. The story didn't only focus on leads' relationship... but also family members of Yan Palace. All characters have depth including supporting ones.

Yin Hui (FL) was so likable. Despite knowing the future, she didn't act as Mary Sue and didn't entirely change the trajectory of future. She didn't intervene on issues and acted accordingly based on her status. There were times she simply saved some characters in a smooth and covert way. Meanwhile, Wei Luo (ML) had stoic and cold as ice, but... more>> actually his lack of expression and quietness made many misunderstood him including FL. But he's actually a good husband, son, father and official (no concubine). For their relationship, I loved how it was developed so well esp when they became more open, trusting and supportive to each other.

Honestly, rebirth only fulfilled some "what ifs" of FL and to clear misunderstanding by being more honest to herself and ML... but as FL said, previous life was still good despite some hardships, but she knew she can (or even her parallel universe version) still able to solve issues at hand without rebirth which proven in sides stories...

Spoiler

1- 402 : Main Story (FL's rebirth 8yrs earlier)

403-434: Leads both time travelled (befoee marriage)

435-446: Wei Ying (normal timeline)

447-452: Back to main story (ML being Emperor)

[collapse]

For cons,

Spoiler

- There are some boring arcs/chapters.

- Soo many characters' names that not only readers but seemed that even translator/MTL/author was overwhelmed thus some names were jumbled in some paragraphs.

- There will be numerous comments on lookism... but most of them were guys being bodyshamed by their wives and their father (LMAO) for being fat, tanned, etc.

[collapse]

Despite flaws of other family members, they able to live peaceful. Having good family head (King Yan) was huge bonus. Unliked other novels, his harem and offsprings' families able to live peacefully and accept all changes with no overexaggerated evil schemes and dog blood dramas among them. <<less

This is v good. The author definitely found success with this novel and applied it forward for her next book. The elements are the same and the depth of writing is all there. I think her next book has slightly more polish in details and emotional depth, but the difference is honestly miniscule. Both books are great, if not slightly similar in events, but the characters are individual and different with a focus on nobility on this one. Her next book is more about survival for ministers and being a... more>> noble princess, with a more unique "love story" then I've seen before.

This book has a love story I have read before: realizing ur husband isn't cold, but that you needed to speak up & learn to put yourself first to get what you want. Regardless, it's well done here even if I've read it before in concept. Comparing this book with her next one, I obviously prefer this ML more and in fact this one has more of a romance imo than her next one. With this one, you can tell when they fall in love with each other. With the other one, the author pretty much just equates the ml's lust / acts of service for the MC for love the whole time, which I personally don't relate to as much. The ML here does the whole package to show he's falling in love with her. I really love all the childcare we get to see in this novel. It's not an afterthought and it's in incredible detail. I love seeing the ML as a good father and the MC as a good mother over many many chapters of detailed events and sentences. I think that is very rare and that doesn't exist in her next book.

This book has the better romance and family unit of her own children details whereas her next book has a better family in in-laws and morals, but both head of the family father figures are good in these books. Absolute solid character writing with juicy, cozy, warm, but not boring slice of life details with a solid romance for this book.

Sidenote: I absolutely hate when translations break up chapters without telling us. And this sites does that and is making money off of PARTS of a chapter smh. For your knowledge, chapter "138" is actually chapter 61 in the real text

Spoiler

the author did this in her next novel too but why TF is she so obsessed with writing about rebirth in diff povs for their past life in the extras. She literally is rehashing the same plot. Wtf why do I need to see her aggravated about her past life marriage and reborn AGAIN when that was the plot of this WHOLE f*ckIN NOVEL. MY GOD nobody cares about that anymore bc we all know BY NOW BY THE END OF THE BOOK that it was just bc of a lack of communication in their marriage that the ML didn't treat her well enough. I literally have no emotional care for her aggravation for this past life AGAIN WHEN WE ALREADY KBOW WHY OMG and DEALT WITH IT. This extra is like the bad draft of this novel that her editor told her not to go with or something bc holy shit. I don't care enough about the author's obvious plan to write dogblood. This is the most dogblood in this entire novel. Should I be glad it's just an extra or.... Why can she not let us see who the children will marry??? Like wtf

In one hand, this is a mild story with not much up and down. The MC and ML are probably the most blessed MC and ML compared to all others because there's barely any drama.

On the other hand it is NOT boring at all. Author does not depend on hate and revenge to fuel the plot, but actually love, understanding, and acceptance.

Our MC's reborn does help our MC in some ways, but actually for the overall situation (the fate of the dynasty) she doesn't really affect anything. Because the real... more>> superhero of the story, her emperor father in law, is too OP for her luck to interfere with his luck.

Also, the ML is clearly autistic. It's nice to see a depiction of a 'cold' ML not because he is a psychopath, he's just neurodivergent. <<less

I understand where ML is coming from his emotions and how he adjusts to the marriage arrangement are valid they are both very young perhaps for ancients 15 or 18 teens are adult but still having to marry because your father (the father is the most realistic and coolest person his self awareness and emotional IQ is really eyeopener he is no bay guy) wants money and a girl who is marrying really high up these circumstances definitely would not yield a good marriage but here they both live their own lives without proper communication she is too timid and he is too cold to show concern (in the first timeline), he didn't cheat on her and...

he doesn't take the cousin as a concubine in both timelines so no worries he just wanted to give her a shelter but FL fights with him for the first time that causes them to open up

This one was a long read but it was a wonderful read :)

The story spans over 10 years and through those 10 years you can really see how the FL and ML slowly grow closer and closer. Unlike most novels, this one focuses on the relationships between the characters and how it changes overtime. The FL isn't some overpowered heroine using her foreknowledge to slap face and win the throne. She's an ancient woman bound by ancient views and beliefs who just wishes to live a good life. From... more>> her experiences she has given up on the idea of love and just wants to take care of her children and live life as she best can. This was really good. I finished it through mtl after I caught up with the translation, and it was fairly easy to understand. I didn't lose interest in the middle, which I tend to do too often. I love the character growth and the extras. The story is pretty interesting akin more like a slice of life. Loved the FL though she isn’t the smartest, she still managed well. Loved the ML. This a very heartwarming novel. I think what truly drew me to the story was how much it emphasized the importance of familial relationships. Typically in historical novels, most of the time in the royal family, everyone is scheming against each other but here it’s close to non-existent or it never reached a point wherein they wanted to kill each other for the throne.

The Emperor was by far the best father out there. He never favored anyone and more than anything he valued his family the most. Literally you rarely... more>> find a father emperor like him in historical novels. He loved all his sons, daughters, wife, concubines and grandchildren. He was also a good emperor.

Also I loved how the FL and ML gradually learned to communicate with each other that by the end of it FL no longer has any grievances but rather came to love the ML who also changed for the better.

Spoiler

FL is a realistic person. She made do with what she already have and tried to improve her life by making herself happy. This in turn changed everyone else's approach to her (everyone can see she's happier, so there is admiration).

ML is an icy wooden block who doesn't seem to communicate well through speech, except when he's in bed with the FL. He seems to do everything (especially showing love to the FL) silently. This leeads to many minsunderstandings and miscommunications.

But after a long time living with each other, they do appreciate each others' abilities and even flaws. Even without explicitly saying "I love you", their actions show their love and affection of each other~

There were a lot of grievances that the FL and ML able to avoid in their second (and third?) lives. So they were able to live smoothly and happily.

[collapse]

I like reading about the dynamic of the royal family that was established by King Yan (ML's father). Even with all the quarrels and jealousy, there are warmths and affections.

Honestly, there's not much drama, but I love reading about their blissful and joyful life. I'm also happy with the extras (truly, it was difficult to find the extras).

All in all, a very recommended reading to all 🌈 <<less

A very interesting novel with a more realistic point of view of what marriage and concubines looked like, I really liked how the author differentiated one from the other concubines regarding social class. The same with the princes of the first wife and other wives.

Spoiler

. What I found a bit confusing was his "reincarnation" "return to the past" the reason is not explained, it is true that in many novels you do not explain them either but they give you clues as to where the origin can go, in this case the FL is not even She doubts if it was a dream, even ten years later the FL is sure that she lived that life, and if so, it makes me wonder what happened to her in the other life, will she have managed to prevent the ML from taking a concubine? Or that the ML be more sincere with the Fl? Why in the other life he proposed to take his cousin as a concubine while she refused, but of course since they didn't get along very well then surely the FL resented him and only cared about her son leaving ML aside, uqe like he wasn't very good at expressing his feelings he wouldn't have cared. Another point that left me baffled was how the FL used his memories to have some future events on his side, something very badly played, sometimes the author made FL see as a superheroine who was given the gift to change the things, and sometimes that clashed with the way of thinking of the Fl, according to her, the FL didn't care that the ML took a concubine, but when the arc arrived, it almost fell apart, trying to align the Ml, that she was more rebellious in his youth, but he never put a stop to Ji xianxia, who sometimes really deserved a stop. I also felt strange how no event in the future was affected, although you know what will happen but since you already know everything that will happen something should have changed, that is, since she woke up back to 10 years in the past some of future events without her intervention should have been omitted, due to the simple fact that she already changed her personality, everyone around her should also have done so for better or worse. Now I'll talk about the emperor, one of the reasons I read this novel was because I read that it had one of the best emperors, I'm not saying yes, I'm not saying no, Ml's father is contradictory, sometimes he loves his children sometimes he can't stand not even seeing them, the father of the ML knew that if the first son was a complete idiot, if it hadn't been for the mother of the first son, he wouldn't have let him be the crown prince, a terrible idea, why if he had been the emperor First son, he would have led the country to ruin, and alienated his brothers, he couldn't stand that they were better than him, the only one who could control him was his mother, if she died, then there would be no one to listen to and he would have made a disaster throughout the kingdom, the emperor did not deeply analyze his first son, he thought that with his mother being by his side everything would be fine, but the first thing happens, the mother dies and the first son is left with no one to advise him, causing his attitude is seen less and less virtuous and its deficiencies are seen something easy to notice, that is one of the reasons why I think the emperor was not so apt, another was that the emperor was very good at judging, he pointed out the deficiencies of each son, and each deficiency of each son came from the bad upbringing of the emperor, the ML is the son that the emperor loved the most, he really loved his father, he admired him, but if he wanted to be noticed he had to be the best, and so that? If it weren't for the Fl, his father would not have wanted him close to the hypocrite that in the end the emperor realizes that the ML was the son who loved him the most, the emperor, although he filled his mouth that he loved his children and grandchildren, he was also the first to drive them away, about his concubines, the emperor in the end who loved his first wife the most, it hurt me that he only realized it when she defended the castle alone, if it wasn't that sure it would be he was divorcing her, or as he spoke of my mother, when he only saw her for the first time he took her the next day to be his concubine and then he forgot about her only because her character was not very flirtatious and she did not have much knowledge, this leaves me wondering why the ML loved his father so much?

[collapse]

If you want something outside of a typical reincarnated FL I recommend this novel, sometimes it gets boring but other times you are excited to read what happens <<less

To show how much I loved this book, I decided to write a review. This is a complete 5 star for me as I love every character in this book except that one villain and he didn't really cause too much trouble. The relationship between all the character is such that I have only read once, in Liu in the Harem. Slow burn and reasonably realistic once you take out the regression element. There is conquest, no genocide. Read with awareness that Chinese beauty standards apply heavily in this story as it is written from the perapective of Chinese aristocracy, where external appearances are often used as a representation of inner quality. 5 stars.

It's a good choice if ou want to slow read something, it doesn't really inspire a binge read. I think it had a lot of opportunities that it missed, I would've liked if in the extras they showed them not getting together in the different incarnations, because the choices they made were wildly different each time but well. The fatphobia is insane, so if that sort of thing bothers you this is not something you want to read, because there is sooooooooo much fatphobia in this. Also like a huge... more>> warning that the regression literally jumps from a fight and into r*pe, when she isn't aware that she regressed and he won't stop no matter what she says.

For the FL, I don't really get why she fell for the ML at all,
Spoiler

his behavior in the OG timeline truly s**ked all the joy and color from her life, and even if the author says he was fond of her, motherf*cker literally just slept with her and said not a word about anything, asked not a single question, took 0 interest in interacting with her or in her life for 10 whole years.

[collapse]

For the ML as I said a stone. Akin to a cog in the wheel who only does as his daddy tells him. I don't really hate him I just find him deeply uninteresting, the only good thing about him is the fact he is monogamous, there is not really anything else he got going for him as a husband.

The plot doesn't really focus on one or the other and is more about the overall situation of the family members with the two of them in the center. <<less

Idk if it felt long because of how the chapters were spliced but this dragged after the first few chapters. I just took a look at the tags again and saw the 'slice of life' tag. It all makes sense now so it was an average read. I started this because I'm currently reading 'reborn after widowhood' and thought it would be similar but the stark contrast between the behavior of the MLs towards the FLs made it difficult for me to truly enjoy this. But that just might be... more>> my own personal bias projecting <<less

It's been awhile since I read a good story that didn't make me feel like skipping chapters to get to the main point faster. Every chapter was interesting. Towards the end I even felt like they didn't expand on side stories of the other nephews and MC's children enough.

ML's father was by far my favourite character. He cares so much about family and familial relationships. He cared about and gave a chance to every son and grandson.
Spoiler

Though it wasn't really clear how the former crown prince Wei Yang actually disappointed him other than not having military strength. Plus I did feel like the author killed Father Emperor off too quickly! I teared when he died!

[collapse]
Characters that I thought would be unlikable ended up quite likable (2nd sis in law and Yin Rong). Everyone except probably Yin Wen and supposed white moonlight.

Maybe the author didn't want to prolong the story too much, but once the family moved to the capital, it felt like the pace became much faster with many time skips.

Overall though a very heartwarming story about family. Nothing too dramatic that makes you tear your hair out and beat your chest. The MC and ML's relationship progressed nicely and sweetly. I liked that the ML was given a chance to grow and change rather than just being abandoned. He didn't do anything very unforgivable either just misunderstood alot. MC also changed in a sense that she opened up more. Communicated more in the relationship with her husband.
