advise for new readers: don't read this story, the translators decided to lock the chapters starting chapter 268 so you'll need to pay a lot of money to read the end (I did the math for you -approximately 30 dollars-) so yeah I think it's a lot for what this novel is really worth. It's not that the story is bad, but it's a little boring, with all the household drama and the s*upids MIL and SIL... this is not an epic story with politics and palace intrigues and war... more>> or whatever... The last arc of the novel was in fact the most interesting with a second ML showing up but heck you have to pay for that. I'm not criticizing the translators, it's their choice to make, but if you're new here, I advise you not to start reading as you will not have an ending without opening your wallet... <<less

Don’t know the reason why people are hating the ML so much, in my opinion he isn’t such a bad character.
Before marrying the female, lead he was in love with his cousin so how can we expect him to fall in love with the female lead all of a sudden.
It’s more likely for them to develop their fellings gradually.

tr*sh.

This novel is certainly "realistic" yes. The FL is not OP and did not became instantly super talented and smart after reincarnating, she's weak and have to hide behind her husband for protection, have to endure the servant's and other people's mockery, have to endure her shameless relatives because of filial piety. She's kind and soft and not retaliating even if her husband's cousin which is the villain plotted against her, she's hoping to have peaceful and harmonious relationship with the villain because she's really not in love with her... more>> husband and hope they can live their lives peacefully even though she knows from her past life that she's super evil and cunning. She doesn't have desire for revenge. She's different from FLs from other novels with the same genre that is cruel and cunning, but that's not what I want.

This type of story is not for me. If I were her, I'd take revenge on people who wronged me in my past life. With all that they did to me, I'd certainly be much wiser, but still she didn't and she's not much different from her past life except from knowing what will happen next. She knows what will happen next but would still be powerless against it. That's super annoying and she's super weak.

Yeah I know on later chapters she'll snap and fight back, but come on, she should've done that from the start instead of hoping for peace and coexistence with those b*tches that wronged her before.

People describe this as realistic but sorry this kind of realistic is not for me. I read novels to enjoy and escape "reality" even for a bit. I don't need another "reality" here. I guess I still much prefer OP and strong protagonist even if it's super unbelievable. Novels are fun because things that are impossible in real life is possible here.

This novel is stressful to read. 1 star for me. <<less

If you don't want to get annoyed or frustrated with the male lead and his family, then don't read this. The female is also weak and male lead is a good for nothing husband who sides with his family and ask his wife to endure everything. He blames her for not loving him and thinks she want to leave because she doesn't like him while he forgets that he has his childhood sweetheart whom he married as a concubine. He still feels he love his wife and she should submit... more>> to him by herself. He don't bother to explain his feelings. May be author thinks us dumb, almost everything in this novel makes you feel like- what the heck!!!! How come main leads are shown dumb and good for nothing. Even small issues which can be understood are shown big things and its all tr*sh. <<less

I really liked the premise of this novel - MC having been reborn is doing her best to adapt to circumstances she can't change. She's not after revenge and only wants to live comfortably. She proposes a fake relationship with the ML stating they can pretend to live harmoniously for a year and then divorce. ML is initially pleased about this as he loves his cousin/childhood sweetheart. It was entertaining to read how MC "resettles" into her new life and marriage. I liked how overtime ML changed his opinion and... more>> began falling for her. I don't think he's tr*sh for wanting to stay with his cousin/childhood sweetheart - after all, a man who can abandoned his love immediately isn't worthy.

However, the biggest problem to me was that the storyline is too slow and repetitive. MC has to deal with the cousin, her MIL, her SILs over and over again. None of the side characters seem to have any character development throughout the story so far and similar problems arise again and again. I got so tired reading about how other people would scheme against / badmouth MC and she would have to try and placate her MIL all the time. I ended up skipping any chapter that had nothing to do with the MC and ML in the end.

I'll probably come back and finish this novel once it's completely translated, but it's not worth a reread in my opinion. <<less

This story is another wonderful additional to the Chinese lady rebirth trope. Unlike in some other stories, the MC is the daughter of a poverty-stricken literary family poised to marry into a rich family due to an old promise between her deceased father and her husband-to-be's late father. She suffers grievance after grievance within the family all because of her husband's childhood sweetheart and cousin, the Gu chick, a despicable two-faced bit*h who knows nothing of love and only yearns for power. After the MC's initial death and return to... more>> the day of her wedding, the story begins its magnetic pull.

The reader has to follow along as the MC is relentlessly attacked by her cousin-in-law and is subjected to the foolish and self-righteous whims of her mother-in-law. The MC is smart however. On the eve of her wedding night, she strikes a deal with husband that they could act out the facade of a fake marriage and could simply divorce in one year's time with the condition that he is not to take in his childhood sweetheart/cousin as a concubine within that time frame so as to avoid all shame.

Like so many other stories of faked romance, true feelings of romance begin to bloom between the two. But it's mostly one-sided on the male's part. And thank God for that. Because the MC has a deep-standing trauma of being abused by her evil cousin-in-law. She will never truly acknowledge her new feelings and her husband's new feelings until the day the Gu bit*h is taken care of. Her trauma of the Gu bit*h is heart-wrenching and she is unlike the other vengeful/overpowered MCs in other stories. As the daughter-in-law from a poor family, she has no proper backing except for her initially unfaithful husband. The readers have to time and time again witness her suck up her feelings and suffer whatever humiliations she has to. We get to feel her sorrow and her anger. So, we take an even larger pleasure every time she comes up on top by the skin of her teeth.

Really. This is the kind of story that tugs on one's feelings of injustice and kindles the indignant flames of righteousness. It makes you wanna squeal every time the MC finds something to smile about. It makes you ache every time the MC has to force a smile at her unruly in-laws. It makes you cheer loudly every time the MC's husband dotes on her.

It's a freaking good story. Hateful, tragic, clever, with a dash of romantic fluff in the cracks. 5/5 <<less

This story is not for people who are used to the typical transmigration / rebirth stories where the previously weak and kind MC becomes vicious and full of revenge, able to suddenly scheme all her enemies' deaths. Don't get me wrong, I like these sort of novels, they're interesting and I like seeing the MC triumph over her enemies (altho it can get too much at times).

But this is generally a much more realistic novel, similar to To Be A Virtuous Wife and such but even more realistic than that.... more>> The MC is a gentle and virtuous girl, a product of the era, so I can understand how some people might view her as weak or even boring. To me, she was an okay character, she was refreshing after so many vicious MCs but I would have liked her to be more proactive at least and not just be defending herself constantly.

As for the ML.......I have my mixed feelings when it comes to him. On one hand, he isn't the worst ML out there - he's a generally intelligent, capable, and courteous person who doesn't treat others like the bottom of his shoes like other arrogant OP MLs out there. But he's also somewhat gullible and I do agree with another reviewer that he doesn't really empathize with either of the women - MC or the antagonist. In the first life, it's understandable he wasn't completely aware of MC's struggles but....I'm pretty sure he should've at least had an idea that marrying into such a rich family way above her station wouldn't be easy? That it's not like MC was at fault for the marriage? And as for the antagonist....I also feel he never stopped to think about how rightfully anxious and suspicious she was to be, even if her actions weren't justifiable at all. Idk I just think the ML was another product of the time, a time where women were mere property and the men wouldn't really think about how hard it was for them.

EDIT:....I hate the ML. Especially for how he treats the antagonist.... He never stops to think that maybe, just maybe she might be right in being suspicious or jealous??? Honestly, like another reviewer has said, it feels like he doesn't really love her - only the ideal of a gentle and beautiful woman. ICK. No wonder he likes the MC, who is basically that with barely little else to her lmao. [Not to say the antagonist is justified in being so scheming, but....I get why she was so anxious lmao and never showed her "bad sides" to him. It's also his fault for idk, never considering that the antagonist also has flaws???]

Lastly for the antagonist....I think, unlike other white lotus villainesses of this genre, she was a much more fleshed out character - altho I think having her as the sole villain was definitely just to drag out the story. Tbh, I quite symphathized with her - people are looking down on her for only caring about the ML's status, but.... back then women relied on men for their status. Having grown up with an alcoholic dad, I'm sure the antagonist didn't trust men and that she knew how fickle they could be, so it was not surprise to me that she was so scheming / suspicious of the ML. Tbh, for the era she was in, I found her to be strangely inspiring - even if I don't agree with her actions at all, but I find her will to survive to be admirable even if just that. She's not a completely 1D villain tbh, and I can see just why she was so desperate to secure her position as ML's wife, even if her actions were downright evil at times.

So yeah... this story is definitely one of an acquired taste. I have rather lukewarm feelings for it, but I do give credit to the author for making characters that are MUCH more fleshed out than the usual CNovels. The plot towards the end was definitely dragged out, however, but I still feel the beginning was quite good. <<less

Based on the first chapter, the MC is very realistic and not OP. Honestly, transmigration is an interesting concept, but OP MCs are not my cup of tea. Hence I only read plots similar to this. I hope the translation schedule runs smooth. This is quite an intriguing novel. Good job transator team! Kudos!

This is a real test of forbearance. The side characters are mostly irritating leeches - showcasing how you can’t choose your relatives. The mother in law is the worst weak willed and narrow minded, but expecting to be respected and obeyed.
Just as the story might be heading somewhere, the translation team locked the remaining chapters - SIGH! What a waste of time.

Don't read this novel unless you want to waste your time on a not satisfying second chance/reincarnation novel because her second life is literally worst than the first... The translation is good and author is also a good writer... But the plot is complete tr-a-sh

If you insist on reading it anyway, stop at chapter 190. It's a good ride until then. More than the and it's only frustration. This has the worst ending of a second chance novel that I've ever read...

The 3 star is for the MC. This was an interesting novel as the MC is a rebirth character that wasn't married into some nobel or imperial family of the capital. She was simply the legitimate wife of a rich merchant. I truly fell in love with her character. She was kindhearted, values her family, and her rebirth made her realistic, realized the errors of her way when dealing with the problems in her previous life, strive to do better with her life and not so gung-ho on revenge.

The huge... more>> turn off of the story is her husband and his family. It's a hellhole. No good person at all. I just can't continue reading this novel. Because I know ML won't let her go and go back on his promise. And the story would probably make it so MC also loves ML in the end so it won't be a forced union. Pei

The ML is an absolutely spineless scum. To the stage I've read anyway. I hated the fact that this story makes it so that MC happiness in the end hinge on ML. And the ML will always end happy be it him with his cousin in the previous life and him with MC after rebirth. It's just his win. He's just there to pull people hate on MC. He hated MC before rebirth for her lackluster character, and now that she is reborn, he hated her cousin cause he was disillusioned with her character.

The Shi family, the ML family, is practical battlefield that I feel isn'necessary. Hateful sister, useless mother in law, useless son, though he is described as a first class businessman, color me shocked, and cousin turned concubine that was her husband sweetheart. Really, happy ending should not be in that cursed family.

The MC has good family, they were poor scholar family yes, but with the turn of their fortune, MC should have had a bargaining power and be able to break free from ML family. I'd be happier if this story ends with MC leading a carefree single life in her paternal family. Alas.

The only other good thing I can say about the novel is that it's fairly well written. And the translation is great. Though not my cup of tea, but certainly can be a good read for others. <<less

Take a drink every time

  1. Someone tells MC to "put up with it for my sake"
  2. MC has to lower herself so as not to come off as "ignorant/rude/unfilial"
  3. A side character berates MC or her family just for existing
  4. ML tells MC he will protect her, then shrug helplessly as she gets bullied
  5. There's a long argument that doesn't matter
  6. The mother-in-law sides with whoever is antagonizing the MC
This novel can be summarized into:

MC: doing her darn best to adapt and survive. Honestly, MC shouldn't have been reborn. Save her the trouble of suffering hundreds... more>> of chapters just to get a man

ML: repeatedly expects her to be ok with his family treating her poorly and putting her in uncomfortable situations, then gets mad at her for being frustrated and also laments on how she's not in love with him. He is a bare minimum ML.

Excerpt to summarize ML

his sister was quite pitiful as well.

However, the one facing the most

This novel was so frustrating that I couldn't continue. The Male Lead is completely pathetic with no backbone. He's extremely unlikeable. He's been put on a pedestal, coddled and worshipped his whole life by every woman around him. He's not someone that the female lead would be able to put full trust in because his mind is too malleable. The conflicts just went around and around in a circle with the same annoying flat "villains". The mother-in-law is too wishy washy and I have an especially intense dislike for her.... more>> She's very shallow and quite dumb. I am so surprised that any decent concubine hadn't taken her down before she became the matriarch of the family. I do like the Female Lead but she's too forgiving and lenient.

Everything happening mostly in their house with no world building made it even more unbearable. <<less

I read till c120 and I can say this story is good. This story isn't an all out revenge story, in fact the FL never planned for revenge. She just use her knowledge from the past to avoid any unfortunate event that might befall her or her family. It's slow paced story and you can see how the development in each character goes. There's only two downside for me :

1. The author dragged the story for too long. Even though I said myself that it is slow paced, it too... more>> slow and you might get bored for it (like me)

2. This is my personal opinion but I don't want the husband as the ML. I know he is a good guy and prob better than other ML but the fact that he just don't talk to FL in the past or trying to understand her and just let his dislike to FL flame in his heart make him so unlikeable. Imo I would love FL to be with the husband friend's since I think he is better (just his statement who doesn't want to see women for her beauty alone is great. As expected for support male lead!) <<less

I do not understand the negative reviews. This novel is one of the best written ones, especially showing our Asian psychology and situations. Thankfully though they are rich, they are not royalty, emperor or novel house. Really really sick of those. There is no hidden identity too, which is another plus point.... more>>

The MIL is so dam realistic! She is type who is benevolent as long as you are following her way of thinking. There are so many of us like that.

Anyways, its A good one where FL is pampered in the 2nd life. But its because of different situation. The ML do not remember past life. Love a man who stands against his mother if shes wrong (he actually went in roundabout ways, but hey its the end result that matters)

It's rare to find rebirth/second chance novels with MCs that strive to improve their life and be happy instead of focusing on revenge. This is one of those.

MC just wants to live her own way. She's pragmatic, attentive, and able to clearly see a situation. She loves her family and they love her in return. However, the downside to this story is the Shi family itself. It's an absolute hellhole where only one or two characters are good. Nobody actually wants MC to stay in such a place, but ML... more>> won't let her go.

ML has flaws. He is gullible and blind and unable to protect the one he loves from petty attacks all because of wanting to keep his family (same as those who don't really like mc) happy. If he really cared, he would have found a way to make GFZ leave or just put eyes to monitor her, but he just doesn't believe that GFZ would be malicious enough to scheme. He just lets MC suffer and telling her empty promises without ever helping her. Lol.

ML better straighten himself out, nobody is rooting for him. <<less

The only strong character and mildly developed justified is the antagonist lol.

Our MC puts up with every wrong thing done against her she's does everything with quiet acceptance, and ML isn't very good at coming to her rescue. She is left to fend for herself but her docile nature just leaves her fending off every attack, or accepting punishment to avoid conflict, not actually retaliating. Though I do think this makes ML more realistic since you can clearly see that his life is very separated from hers and does not meddle much with inner court affairs. ML isn't likeable and you do feel a huge sense of pity for MC. It isn't the instant love at first sight, which is why until like 70 chapters in, he's still a fool for the cousin antagonist. He also isn't a man of his word and you really do see how imperfect he is. Low-key frustrating but I understand why author wrote him. I personally don't think the relationship is super 'fluffy', just 'meh', partly due to the MCs not being likeable. Better off reading similar world novels: ROTMEOML, DCF, TMR, etc, for the hnnnngh dose. The side characters thoughhhh, imo are just meaningless. They're literally a bunch of useless annoying fodder. Also think it would have been better without so much filler - I can hardly follow the plot of the novel ojz.

As for the cousin, she will annoy you to death with her schemes. LOL. She literally is extremelyyyyy unlikeable, and the typical narcissistic fodder b*tch who thinks the world revolves around her. However despite this, I do find her character a contrast against all the other characters (except for the MC's second-sister-in-law who's refreshingly strong willed and outspoken). As you read it, you really begin to realise how insecure she is because of all her scheming and interactions with ML and her servant (when she constantly frets over what the ML is doing and why he is losing interest in her). She doesn't trust in ML, which draws him away from her to our MC. It's ironic how the person ML trusted the most, betrayed him, and the person who trusted him the most, he betrayed. I liked this part about the story since there's so many flaws in everyone. Even though they both proclaimed mutual love, I get a feeling that the cousin never really loved ML. She feared him being taken away from her because that meant her stability within the household would falter and she strongly believes that everything belongs to her - the position to manage the household - hence why she bullies MC and was successful in the past life, trying to attain whatever possible means of power a woman of that time would be able to attain in a male-dominated era. She's the only 'strong' character in the main household, her tongue is really vicious and has a way with sweet words. She knows how to play her pity cards, is proactive and if she sees potential in something, she will do whatever to see it happen - often successfully. If she weren't following the antagonist route, I believe she would be really successful as one of those smart-strong-headed-rise-to-power MCs.

[collapse]

Edit: Yeet, okay, finished the raws. Opinion still holds - book tried to create some fluffy moments (kinda like from DCF but I didn't really feel it), still bland.
