Our male and female lead are in the online entertainment circle, he on the dubbing side and she on the music cover side. The circle is one where physical appearance is generally anonymous and you are known by your online handle and your voice. Gu Sheng, a relatively unknown online singer who goes by the handle Sheng Sheng Man and who specializes in cover songs of ancient-style music, is a huge fan of Qiang Qing Ci, a very famous and well-loved CV (character voice) artist (i.e. dubber, voiceover artist). It was like, love at first listen.

One morning, she was chatting with a friend in her online “room” when his voice suddenly appeared in her headset, describing to her in detail how to prepare a food dish she had been talking about. This began their online chats about food. Gu Sheng can scarcely believe that she is talking to her idol, and he seems to be trying to progress the relationship further.

This is a very "shoujo" story. Since I somewhat enjoyed reading it, I don't want to start by saying too many negative things about it. Basically, your enjoyment of this story will depend on your answer to these questions:

- Are you bored?
- Do you like stories like Twilight?
- Are you ok with completely passive female characters?
- Are you looking for a story with a hot, mysterious "prince" character that is suddenly and completely devoted to the female main character?
- Do you not care too much about... more>> the story/plot, as long as the romance/flirting makes your heart pound?

If you answered YES, you will enjoy this story, so go ahead and read it. You don't have to read the rest of my review.

However, if you answered NO to any of those questions, I want to caution you:

- This is one of those stories where the female character is a completely "blank slate."
AKA, the type of story where young female readers can easily imagine that they are the main girl (like Bella). You have no idea what she looks like or what her main qualities are, all you know is that she's shy, talented, and good looking, and for some inexplicable reason, the hot male MC is completely smitten with her.

- If you want to read this story because you're interested in the "voice acting" and "food" part of it, you may be disappointed.
The entire story takes place within the online voice acting/music circle, but they don't ever get into the technicalities or details of it. Every scene can be summarized like this: "Everyone is super talented, the female main character is shy, they make some music/voice stuff, the final product is awesome."
I was really interested in their discussions about food, but in reality it's just the main male character quickly explaining a recipe step-by-step for 1-2 paragraphs, and then the female main character stutters and says nothing back. I don't think she actually ended up spending any time making any of the recipes he gave her, either. She just eats his food later and enjoys it. (The author spends no time describing how the food actually was. It's just quickly described as "perfect" or "delicious" and that's it.)

- There is zero drama in this story and the pacing is very slow.
So unless you're bored, have time to spare, or have fallen in love with the main male character, this story won't excite you. Don't expect any strife, angst, arguments, or difficulties of any kind. It's more like a "enjoy reading a simple romance very slowly" sort of thing.

- If you aren't a fan of passive female characters, you won't like this main character at all.
She seriously doesn't do ANYTHING for the entire novel. Her reaction to everything and anything is to be "so shocked and surprised that her mind went blank for several minutes, and by the time she came back to reality, several things had happened already." (I'm not kidding. She just freezes up and lets other people take the lead.)
I also had an extremely hard time believing in her relationship with the main male character because she barely says anything to him, doesn't do anything to help him, etc... What type of hot, rich, talented, genius, super-star guy would actually like a girl who just stutters and does nothing? (This story requires extreme suspension of disbelief.)

Spoiler

I also dislike how she is so passive that she lets him make every single decision regarding their relationship. He doesn't ask if she wants to date him -- he just tells someone she's his girlfriend, and she goes along with it. He doesn't wait for her to take any initiative sexually -- he just goes for it every time while she's frozen for the entire thing. He doesn't ask her if she wants to get married -- he just goes to her parents without her knowledge, then brings her to sign the certificate in a daze. Maybe this is normal in Chinese romance (?), but as a reader who likes when females have brains and opinions... it was very frustrating.

[collapse]

HOWEVER, I do want to say that the translation quality was very good. The translator really took the time to translate all of the songs mentioned, put links to videos/audio of the music, photos of each of the food dishes described, etc. Big kudos to the translator for doing such a thorough job. <<less

I have never felt so frustrated with an FL in my entire novel-reading life.

She is like grass, she sways wherever the wind blows. I have no idea how ML finds her attractive when she rarely even speaks her mind! But I guess, to each our own.

I just felt suffocated for her in this entire ordeal. Her shyness and her inability to be honest to herself and ML and communicate killed the romance real fast for me. As a reader, it felt like walking on quick sand everytime she's so uncomfortable... more>> with a situation and still DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING!

COMMUNICATION IS DEAD.

It's so hard to root for a character who doesn't even want to root for herself.

Props to the translator though, amazing music links!

p.s.

to people comparing this to Love o2o, how dare you! HOW. DARE. YOU! Bei Wei Wei has a personality, okay? She's got a backbone and stands up for herself, and although she's dazed by XiaoNai's halo sometimes, she's at least witty! And she's got brains to help him out. It doesn't even compare! <<less

Eh... for some reason, I enjoyed reading this while the two leads were interacting online, but once it transferred to the real world, I lost interest... the female lead has no witty comebacks at all to the teasing, preferring to respond with silence and blushing, she is completely passive in the relationship. I got the feeling that if the male lead hadn't been so insistent on having her, nothing would have happened. That being said, their online relationship was really cute.

I skipped to the epilogue from chapter 40, and I... more>> don't think I'll read the in between chapters. <<less

So sweet my teeth ached :D

Those who like 'A Slight Smile Is Very Charming' should love this. They kinda have a similar vibe: online+real world, famous/perfect male lead falling in love and expertly/nonchalantly/sneakily/openly (lol) courting the girl. Swoon-worthy moments ensue.

A very sweet, angst-free, happy read.

MBFB is a revered author and scriptwriter in China- the reason why I tried to read her novels. Her dramas are very good and I respect her for that, but her novels are dull. Its slice of life so its inevitable that one may feel that way but her novels are another level kind of dull. (Clearly not all, just most of them.)

ML is always handsome, good, has a high status. MC is shy, beautiful, 'dazed by his beauty'. Gentle trope with barely any third parties or misunderstandings. Its... more>> a never ending cycle trope from her novels that when I see her name, I always expect this and boy, was I right.

This one is no different. But the MC is very weak and has no presence. I do not, for the life of me, get how such a good ML fell for her? As others said, MC is a blank slate- Truthfully, I do not like MC's that are like that, but I still read it thinking, maybe its not that bad- but it is.

ML decides for literally everything and MC just go *oh my good voice* and is blank from his voice and beauty then the next scene is her just following ML. She's like a robot? A dog?

For God's sake. If you have a low attention span, you're gonna take a very long time to read this and its boring. The reason is precisely the lack of action, spice, like yknow someone vying for ML or MC?? It would've been good ro have 3rd parties rather than a dog MC and a manipulative kinda ML. At least MC would show other feelings rather than going *putong-putong* from ML right...

I feel that as an author, she's overrated. Just my two cents of course. I like her other works, but most of her novels perhaps, do not deserve the hype it gets. Lol. Got me looking forward to a good food only to get a bland soup. <<less

This novel is alright, forgettable. If you like a MC with minimal thoughts and just go along with the pace of the ML then this is worthwhile. I found it boring in how she doesn't really say anything much verbally. I feel like she is a blank slate?

The plot is actually pretty good. However, the female lead is a bit of a "blank slate" like what the other reviewer here said. She has no presence. She's just... there. It really makes you wonder how the all around awesome male lead fell in love with her. It's really confusing. The way she acts is also irritating for some reason. You really can't imagine how such a girl became the female lead. It's like a bad casting really. Too bad. The setting was pretty interesting.

I doubt this book would have made much an impression if the translator hadn't been so good... and put up all those awesome ancient songs/translations/links for context and atmosphere! ♪ (o*゜∇゜) o~♪

This is an extremely fluffy, tooth-achingly sweet, completely without any negative interactions, slice-of-life romance between a small time singer/composer and a very famous online voice actor. This is the type of book you should read after reading some deep angst tragedy, after crying your eyes out all night. It is a pure entertainment, idol-themed romance where the MC is... more>> a starry eyed fan of the ML...

Spoiler

to the point where she still thinks about him in that manner even after they got married...

[collapse]

The shoujo tag is right. The author gave us an extremely passive female lead as if letting young fangirls put themselves in the shoes of the MC. Despite the immature romance, the author does manage to give some good advice to young people out there swamped in social media/etc. which is essentially: haters gonna hate, don't become too down about negativity online, the more popular something is, the more negative things can get.

Right, that's all I have to say.

P.S. Oh yeah the relationship moves at the speed of light! Dat ML so smooth, he unreal-- <<less

Pick up this novel if you are looking for an easy read with lots and lots of happy, squeal-worthy moments. The really good thing about this novel is that both the leads, Sheng Sheng & Mo Qingcheng, are truly devoted to each other and there is no room for any third party. To sum up, I would say this novel is fluffy, romantic, angst-free and introduces you to some really good ancient style chinese music.

Warning : Do NOT read this novel at night, or you'll surely suffer from hunger pangs,... more>> seeing all these amazing dishes featured throughout the story. <<less

I am really fed up of FL being flustered, daydreaming, spacing out, and becoming super conscious of ml. It seems wayyy too unrealistic considering the fact FL is normal person with no social anxiety or anything like that. She should get used to it and in front of ml, she is just being led around like a puppet. From his words, or 'chuckles' (I have seen Male leads never ever 'laugh', else it will ruin their persona 🤣) and his face, MC gets dazed idk if ML is a human... more>> or a hallucinogen. <<less

Ughhhh I was suffering from withdrawals even before I read the epilogue chapters. Please can I order myself a copy of the ML too thanks? The MC was better than the one in Summer Tea and wayy better than the one I glimpsed in Squid, though I do get irritated by her constant confusion and "being one beat behind." Though I guess it would make sense if she's so taken by his voice, but that's something I can't imagine myself being obsessed with. She slightly improves later on in the... more>> story, especially after they start being together, but sometimes I'm pretty frustrated by her indecisiveness and the ease with which the ML is able to use his voice to make the MC do anything. Why do all of these female MCs have to be naive and spaced out like this with love? At least in Beautiful When You Smile the girl already had a boyfriend and is able to talk and argue directly with the ML even though he was also her idol. Nonetheless, still love and enjoy the diabetes I got from this story. Plus the constant mention of food and music. Now I feel hungry. <<less

This story is most about the romance between the two leads Gu Sheng and Qiang Qing Ci, and not much else. The setting is initially on forums and social media but soon moves offline. It is sweet and gives a lot of WAFF moments... in between the periods of awkward silence. Was I the only one who found their interaction somewhat stifled?

Spoiler

As stated their primary and initial interaction is online, but QQC’s expression of interest in most of the early chapters is reciting recipes, dropping hints and occasionally posting vague messages, while GS is overwhelmed by the attention of her idol and responds mainly with Mmn or by blushing. It doesn’t really improve later on but they do get the opportunity to do this offline...

The main couple and their friends share an elementary school mentality and made school yard jokes, so attempts at humour weren’t quite successful. While the later half of the story seemed to drag a bit. Also noticed QQC likes to jump ahead of himself in public declarations and only really asks her after... no biggie but WAFF moments would be nicer if the leads could at some point talk to each other properly.

Also not a huge fan of the whole idol/fanbase setting and language but that's probably a personal thing so I won’t rate it lower for it. Love declarations for idols seem a little over the top for me.

[collapse]

Did really appreciate the translator’s efforts in translating the songs and their backgrounds, so I’ll bump it up to 3/5, but the story itself really shouldn't be more than 2/5.

Recommendations/Upgrades: A Slight Smile is Very Charming is quite similar in terms of set up however the quality of their interactions and the overall story are significantly better. There's also a lot more parallels with Just Blame Me For Being Blind in the Beginning, but again, the characters and their interactions were leagues ahead.

Spoiler

While the female lead meets her idol in the gaming world (who happens to be her idol irl as well) she can hold actual conversations with him and part of that glittery aspect is replaced by real emotions. The male lead also has few words, but has a rather dark sense of humour – which he uses more on the supporting cast than the female lead. The MMORPG setting also dilutes the need for conversation as they can build trust through teamwork, while they avoid public declarations, making their relationship more intimate and allowing them to interact as equals.

In RRMY, the male lead’s fans pretty much know everything the same time the MC does... and the ‘sweetness’ of their relationship really relies on his fans telling us so.

Story 4/5, TL 5/5

Personally felt that the highlight of the story wasn't the romance itself but the process and medium used by ML in wooing the FL. Translator is a well known MBFB fan, she went above and beyond again w this project. Her footnotes about the food and ancient song explanations are like MSG that padded the story and made it more flavourful and palatable.

Cute! Short! Fluffy! Sweet!

That pretty much sums up the romance and the entire book.

One thing that stands out for me is the music that accompanies this novel. The translator has been kind enough to not only link to the music mentioned in the novel, but also translate the lyrics. Thanks, love. Putting the music on while reading the book makes the immersion infinitely better. The clear male voice and the sweet female accompaniment singing in the background make the reading experience so memorable. I can just picture it...... more>> or should I say, "hear it"?

Though the story and romance is nothing noteworthy, this book is worth reading just for the text+audio experience. It's relatively short. It's a feel-good book. It's completed. It's got good translations. It's bound to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart. So what are you waiting for? <<less

This was such a sweet, cute, wonderful book. I absolutely loved the relationship between the two main leads. The progression of their romance is so cute and wonderfully sweet to read. If you enjoyed a Slight Smile is Very Alluring you will most likely enjoy this book as well as it shares some similarities. I feel like this is very masterfully written. Big kudos to the translators (and likely the author) - I found that the way the story was written, you could really "hear" the voices in the dialogues. Also, usually with slow dialogue, a story can get boring; In this case it did not. The dialogue felt very real - usually short sound effects as responses (like 'un' or 'uh' etc) don't really ever fit too well, but in this story all of the short sound effects fit the dialogue perfectly.

I'm really... more>> surprised I enjoyed a story with such a slow pacing as much as I did. I also find the romance very logical. Usually a romance requires some form of ignoring logic or reasoning when considering character interactions and actions.
Spoiler

In this case, I would normally find the male lead's intensity in pursuing the female lead to be odd - but once you find out that he fell in love with her voice years before, you can understand how from a psychological point of view, he had probably been searching for her for quite some time and immediately latched on without letting go because he was unable to find her after hearing the initial recording of her humming.

Basically, the part I would usually find illogical - the reasoning behind the male MC being so relentless - turns out to be very logical in actuality. Also, because of how it's written, you have a vague feeling the whole time that he's very deliberately pursuing her and that there is some reason behind it.

[collapse]

Very well done. I also have to say, after reading this and a few other Chinese romance novels, I have come to the conclusion that I find them much more appealing to read than Japanese or Korean romance novels, and it's precisely because of the whole logical romance aspect to them. Korean romance novels tend to be a little more logical as well but these Chinese romance novels just seem to feel very realistic in terms of character motivation and interaction. <<less

Gu Sheng is sweet girl who any die hard fan can relate to. She falls into her hero worship daze so often its hilarious.

Qiang Qing Ci is your typical, All round perfect MC. He is also a very sly.

If you liked 'a slight smile is very charming' you can give this a try but the romance here is very slow and more manipulative that the former.
