The countries of Mephius and Garbera have been waging a war for ten years and are trying to put an end to this long fight through a political marriage between the two royal families. Orba, who was driven from his home because of the war and was forced to become a gladiator, looks exactly like the crown prince of Mephius, and it has been decided he will be substituting him during the wedding ceremony. On the other hand, Vileena, the princess of Garbera, has secretly decided to ensnare the crown prince for her own country’s interests.

At first, this series was intriguing with excellent world building, the plot was enjoyable and the main characters seemed promising. Thus I was quickly let down, after two volumes I've maybe seen interaction with Orba (Main Character) for 40% of the time and even then it's from someone else POV. With a lack of focus on the main character and plot points that fidget and pussyfoot around while trying to build up suspense, I was left bored and disinterested. The story isn't terrible but just seems to be poorly edited... more>> and has little to no focus, continually introducing new characters that rarely mean more than a passing glance. I'll probably drop this for some time and might pick it up again later. <<less

Took me a while to read the last few chapters. But this story is a rare gem. The seemingly simple plot overarching to create a beautiful complex story full of very interesting characters. Seriously. I've started reading this story when it was first translated and up to it's 12 completion completion gave me quite the fun reading.

The ending is a bit lacking, the author could have written a few more interactions between the MC and the male lead though at the end. Well, more or less its an open ended... more>> story?

If there were a few side stories I would have wanted to know what happened to Hou Ran, maybe more details on what happened to the other minor characters like Lady Marilène of Helio. Maybe even a few ideas on what happened to Orba's mother. The author wrote them off as dead but I couldn't drop the inkling that maybe... dunno.

The MC isn't OP but neither is he a weak. The other characters also added more spice to it, I even think the female lead is just as interesting as the MC. Overall, it was a good read. <<less

I read though about 2 volumes, it was fairly boring if you ask me. It wasn't excitable at all until the very end when the MC had his duel with with the rebel knight. I don't mind a slow pace series but I didn't see it going anywhere after reading the whole first two volumes. If in 2 books the series can't grab me and make me want to know more than why wouldn't I drop it? Look maybe I'm wrong and the series got better from there I don't... more>> know. However I'm certainly not going to find out.

  • Slow pacing
  • Setting and political drama was interesting
  • the MC and his "purpose" as a prince look-alike seemed to be really bad plot point
  • Even after 2 volumes I felt bored with the little progress of the novel
  • Characters weren't very relatable imo

Surely one of the most, enjoyable read without you being bored halfway for each volume. Once you start, you will read it till the end of each book with good conclusion and no unnecessary cliffhanger. The story is not overly complicated and you could grasp the plot pretty straightforwardly without unnecessary information unrelated to each arc. There is no scene that made you want to skip it even the slighest bit since you know they will have almost immediate relation to the arc, even by itself its intriguing and fun... more>> to read. All of the characters pretty much have a certain amount of significance to the story and you could actually view of them as a living persona. There is no particular edgy, grand philosophy or ideology, its just one of a simple enjoyment, immersing the world, adventure, and tale of Orba. In a sense, Its definitely a 'light' novel, but not a cheap, mass produced one <<less

On par with classics like Arslan Senki and Guin Saga. Great developments both story-wise and character-wise.

Good premise, but could have been executed better and fleshed out in my opinion. There's a lot of tell, not show, which can get very boring quickly. The story also seems very surface level while using imagery and detail. Many unsatisfying/missing character interactions or conversations that could have added much more depth to the story if done better or added, especially at the resolution/end of many of the arcs within the story. Many of the endings of the arcs feel like there was something missing and leaves you with a... more>> bad taste in your mouth. While the story is Seinen it feels more curated for the Shounen demographic.

Not a total waste of time, there is a good story in here, but just not for me. The author and translators obviously tried their best, and their effort should not go unnoticed. <<less

Excellent light novel, truly 5-stars has romance, action, and most importantly a MC who isn't afraid to stain his hands or do what needs to be done.

Only downside is that despite this novel being very good, ultimately it is kind of saddening that in terms of time, the plot isn't very long and not many grand developments really happen even up to the end

While I enjoyed the journey the ending was pretty anticlimactic and somewhat disappointing. Like I said you should still read the story and experience this amazing tale yourself but don't get your hopes up for an "amazing" ending.

My favourite light novel ever. Not exaggerating. Highly recommend people to check this out.

Most distinct thing I like about this novel is the characters, also the MC being one of my favourites (clever and strong, but also got his distinct weaknesses). Author also takes the time to flesh out the side characters. Characters are not always good or bad, right or wrong, but essentially they develop based on their circumstances, obligations, personality etc. Seem very much human and realistic.

There is always something to keep you on the edge of your... more>> seat for the plot. Nothing too deep or goes crazy, but definitely very interesting as I just can't wait to learn what happens next. Sub-plots also keep you nervous as it foreshadows towards the future developments. The world that is built in this novel is also very much alive and not something that revolves around the MC.

This is something any book/novel lover should try. No matter what your tastes, I think people can recognize this is definitely a great series this author wrote. Also kudos to the amazing translators! <<less

Stumble upon this LN and glad I gave it go after reading the summary. It get interesting as the story progresses but due to the slow pacing, it might requires a few volumes to catch on. Simply a hidden gem I must say, would have missed it if I had given up early. The story plot is rich but slow, building up strong backgrounds for the characters, world and conditions as its necessary in the LN as it goes on. (E.g. To make you feel connected with the characters, emotional... more>> roller coaster as every minor details plays a role.)

To be honest, it didn't capture my attention at the beginning, but don't get me wrong, the story is still well written & there's action to keep you going, just not to a grand scale event & vast of vol.1 is dedicated to build up the MC as a "Fool" can be boorish. Knowing this is an old classic LN, things tend to start off slow. This is one classic example as towards every ending and hence forth, the story shift up a gear again & again. For every ending is breathtaking, kept me going for more. New gen LN I call it, tends to start off with interesting plots or an OP character instead. Not all but mostly turns sour, repetitive and goes stale later in my experience. A complete opposite for this LN.

PS: Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but truly a lost for those who dropped this interesting story at early volumes.

As for Rakuin, it's engaging to follow, how self justice contradicts with morale, strategy and scheming, politic and conspiracy, ally/enemy? Friend or foe? With a huge background for our MC making him human, mortal, without any supernatural gift or cheats pit against opponents that gets stronger one after another while keeping his identity a secret. If you're going to give this LN a go, my advice ; think of 2-3 volumes covers an arc instead of chapters, read on and enjoy. (5/5) <<less

May I just say I enjoy some of the interactions. The story flows well enough and it all makes sense. My biggest complaint would be how convoluted and boorish it can be at times. Like I get it this guy is evil, main guy hates him do we have to drone on and on about every detail of his plan and who the evil man is using? Like all I care about is the relationship between the princess and the gladiator turned prince. Yet they do not get much time... more>> in the books so far. Most of it seems to be explaining the evil guys plans, then hero saving it.. then maybe a bit of that complicated relationship between the MC and others.

If you like somewhat complicated book, that has very detailed descriptions of everything this is for you. I give it a 4/5 leaning more 3/5 because it is well written and the plot is somewhat interesting enough to keep me reading. That being said I have read things I have enjoyed much more. I could never give this a 5/5 because sometimes I have to skim through the end of a chapter going dear lord can I get to something interesting I get it he is evil stop droning on about it. So after I skim a lot of the evil sides parts I could never go perfect but when it is of his perspective it is quite good. In fact you can probably just skip all the bad guys being bad guys parts and still understand the story I have just by skimming it. In truth they should have skipped it because not only do you have to read about it... he tells you how he feels a lot and why he does so it seems repetitive. Also as a side note this book details some side characters more than I have seen books detail their main characters. Which is nice and all but I can imagine it on my own and it takes a lot of time to read through considering just how many names are in this book series. Because there are always multiple plots happening at the same time interweaving it takes a lot of people. So if you like being told everything that is a nice point but I on the other hand was like why do I care what this maid looks like? she said two things and is used once in the plot. Why did she have more lines describing her than words she has spoken?

Finish it off saying there is better out there I think but nothing here is a deal breaker for me so I can recommend it. <<less

Rakuin no Monshou is one of the best novels I have read. Putting it on my personal ranking, it's right next to Release That Witch.

What I really love about this novel is the solid world building, multi-dimensional characters and the action and drama that really grips your heart.

It's amazing how I remember every character's name. The side characters don't just come and after achieving the goal, they never appear again. No, you'll see them again and they could even have character growth. A enemy of the MC could become his ally and it wouldn't be just following the MC for no reason, he wouldn't trust the MC fully at first so the reader can see the process of logical decision turning into respect. I am glad I decided to give this a chance, already up to date... more>> in one day because I couldn't put this down. <<less

If you're expecting to read chapters jam packed with punching and explosions like the majority of web novels you see on this site then this isn't where you will get that.

If you're looking for a story that is truly trying to tell a story then this will probably please you. It's a proper novel experience, not a mindless episodic punchfest (ATG/PMG/etc). The setting and events remind me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics, very pleased I picked this up.

Don't misunderstand though, there is action, but the story is more than... more>> finding the next punching bag or harem member. <<less

A Game of Thrones-esque low fantasy world following a village boy, turned gladiatorial-s*ave, turned imperial battle tactician. Unfortunately the politics and annoying characters just bogs down the pacing and thus I got bored halfway through and re-read something more exciting (EEiaR), before coming back to finish this. This is a great novel that I just did not enjoy reading. Yet I can also say that it ended much too early, with far too many lose ends regarding the nature of the world.

The story is good? I don't know so far I've only read thousands of manga's but as far as light novel goes I probably only red 10 so far. That is why I can't muster a complete conclusion.

The story is too detailed. Too detailed that there are so many characters with different perspectives and stories that it's outright confusing. (It took me a while to get used to it) Although it can be justified by the story being centered around warring kingdoms, it doesn't change the fact that some of... more>> the volumes barely even mentions the main character (s). (Are most war novels really like this?)

Gotta give credit for the author for that axed like ending with a damn good plot-wist that forced everything to conclude while still making sense. The problem it left me was Orba's relationship...

I think it's inferred that Vileena doesn't mind Orba having Hou Ran as a concubine? I need someone to clarify this... <<less

Amazing story, chapter 4 had my heart pumping. Immersive, leading you into the story extremely well, placing perspective in the eyes of a child of a farmer turned gladiator allow author to reveal the world of the story slowly and delicately. Very well translated

There is a lot of background information on the kingdoms of this world, and more than needed focus on side characters that will probably not show up after the arc ends. Despite that, it is a well written story and has plenty of likeable characters. The MC is a gladiator, through and through, but was still interested in reading as many books as he could get his hands on. In turn, with his life experience and knowledge of books, helped him become a good strategist.

It is one of the best... more>> novels out there for the first four volumes, but I lost interest afterwards. <<less
