If you first start reading this novel, you may find the story a bit bland and all over the place. Well, you are right. The story start off incredibly slow, and the author likes to introduce tons of random plot devices purely for comedy value with no actual impact to the story itself.

However the story is a very serious one, and will show itself as such as the story progresses. Slowly, but surely the story will pick up momentum, and will take a drastic turn once it reaches the first... more>> major campaign in the Far east, which happens somewhere in the second half of the first book. (Around chapter 10).

If you wish to give this novel a chance, I would recommand you to keep reading till that point, If you don't like it then, you should stop and move on. <<less

Readable, but not something I would recommend to people.

The comedy is decent, enough to make me chuckle a little bit every now and then but never any real, big laughs, this comedy is the only reason I started reading this for. I sadly find that it has no other truly appealing parts, at which point I had to question whether or not the parts other than comedy were worth reading through just to get to the comedy and the answer I got to was no, it's not, it's simply that... more>> bad in terms of story and the comedy isn't good enough to compensate.

The story just isn't really interesting at all and the characters doesn't make me feel anything much either. It's to the point where I actually dislike several of the characters, they feel empty and soulless, not to mention being unrelatable and chaotic instead of consistent, a result of bad writing, it doesn't catch one's interest and instead becomes tedious to read through. The pacing is also not that good, it doesn't allow for immersion at all as we jump around both back and forth in time (mainly for info dumps about times long past or future info dumps about what will happen long into the future) and also between a general overview over the entire situation or events around the MC or related to him and then a view from the mc's perspective, not to mention that some events just happen too fast without any substance, like the part where they take over the city, it's shown off as a big deal but in actual fact we don't get to see anything at all except for a summary... It's not hard to understand, it's just chaotic and idiotically made. It often reads more like a history book than an actual novel since we don't truly follow the MC but rather all the events around him and then he pops up now and then to joke a little and say some stuff, it's ridiculously dull, the readers are left completely disconnected from the story, it has no soul. This author is on my blacklist from now on since he can't write an even remotely immersing and interesting story that the readers would care about with his "style".

Sadly, it doesn't even have as good comedy as I hoped it would despite making me laugh a little now and then, especially not at some times when the comedy is inappropriately placed or overdone. Things like making the MC do moronic things or letting him get tricked or screwed over just for the sake of comedy, really s*upid crap.
Spoiler

Like getting drunk when he knew he wasn't allowed before an important meeting to and getting knocked out and thrown into the sewers by some crappy thugs when he's a highly skilled martial artist (because of extreme intoxication) etc, but also things like paying a huge amount of money for someone to hide the panda eyes from that encounter and then he got a pair of sunglasses worth nothing but he didn't retaliate...

[collapse]
I don't like that type of crap which twists the story and does impossible or truly ret*rded things when the MC is supposed to be intelligent.

If I had to come with a few examples on what to expect from this author, we can take a certain demon princess named ka dan as an example.

Spoiler

This ka dan is a prisoner of war but gets treated like royalty because her father is that demon god king guy and she threatens with su*cide all the time if she doesn't get everything she asks for (and she asks for some pretty damn valuable stuff and unreasonable things). It's not as if they're on good terms with that demon place anyway with all their slaughtering for several hundred years, so what are they afraid of? Seriously. I really dislike this author's way of thinking. What we get because of that is an extremely annoying bastard. It's even more annoying that the author is forcing romance on her by making one of the people close to the MC fall blindly in love with her.

She's a pretentious prick that has no worth whatsoever, yet she's somehow allowed to cozy up and be close to the mc's sister along with everyone else, even letting her invade his office however she wants to? All while she has a shitty attitude (she's also the one who did the sunglasses joke where she deceived and ripped him off, but the MC just lets her do as she wishes, hell, we don't even see him talking to her or anyone else at all, it's sometimes as if the MC isn't a MC at all and is just there to be shown, I feel no attachment to him at all). I especially found it ridiculous when she heard about how some guy on the frontlines were plundering resources from the demons to fight a prolonged war and she's like "Then what about our people? do they deserve to starve!?". b*tch, you're at war. These demon morons have been attacking the mc's place over and over and over again for several hundred years. You dare to speak as if it's actually unfair? Do only the demons get to attack? This was even the "first great invasion", so it's the first time someone truly retaliated.

I actually truly wonder why is she even allowed to do as she wants. She should be executed on the spot or used to gain an advantage, as for if she commits su*cide, who cares, even if the demon god king got pissed off, what would that change when they've been at war for so long? Even if he's ret*rded and would attack full force, it would perhaps still be preferable to this several hundred years of war thing they have going on. But for argument's sake, let's say we can't possibly let her die because we gain nothing by it, why not drug her down until she can't do anything herself? Put her somewhere, bind her up, put something in her mouth to prevent her from biting her tongue off. Problem solved. It's frustrating to read about all the idiocy going on here, I can't agree with many parts of the author's sense of humor and logic. This thing truly reads like a history book at most times, it's quite boring and not interesting at all.

[collapse]

Let's take one last thing. I truly hate the idea of this world somehow having stuff such as cars, viagra, newspapers, sunglasses, movies, soap operas (at least the MC mentioned that), modern diseases with modern names and MANY other similar things despite being a typical xianxia world in every other way (be it gear, combat or actions), be it buildings or events. Hell, despite mentioning things like cars and all the other stuff, we're not actually shown any of it. This is just an average wuxia/xianxia world. There's nothing modern that we have confirmed as being used in the story except for newspaper and sunglasses, but really, the newspapers are even like modern day ones with ads (for vi*gra and things like that of all things, JUST FOR COMEDY, geez) and everything. If there really were cars, why wouldn't any have been used or seen yet? Also, that level of technology makes it obvious that things such as guns should exist, but nope, they're stuck at the level of only have a few cannons, other than that it's just standard old-school armor and swords. Why even mention this crap if there is none of it? At the start I thought that the MC was supposed to be reincarnated and thus he mentioned the soap opera thing, but that doesn't seem to be the case, nothing he does nor none of the text has said anything that would make me suspect he would be reincarnated, that's also something we would've known early on if it was true.

So, I don't recommend anyone to read this. It reads like a history book, the comedy is decent at best, the characters and story are unbelievable shallow and it's pretty much impossible to be immersed into the story etc... If you go into this, be aware that this author seems to be more interested about writing about the history of this particular household than anything else. The MC isn't really that important, everything is just about that house and the history and future of it. Don't expect a good adventure or any great battles, it's all kept very superficial. <<less

This is one of the more unique novels I have read here in novelupdates, qualified to be called as a hidden gem. The main MC is truly shameless but his shamelessness is the source for some funny times in the story. Also, I think that the world is pretty well-built and the characters are all well-balanced. This is a pretty good read so I highly suggest that you read it and who knows, you might like it too.

Review as chapter 8 part 1

So much comedy, but the author manage to instill some heartache too!

We met with Xiu, an orphan adopted by the late head of Zi Chuan. At first he’s described as a carefree young man, shameless to the rooftop and manage to turn every of his effort as being seen as just a ‘lucky’ encounter. Together with his brothers of three, they joining hand in hand for upholding the glory of house Zi Chuan.

but I really have a guts that their friendship is going torn sooner or later because of the circumstances.

[collapse]

Not like you typical Chinese novel, when you confront with beautiful female its instantly became a harem member of our MCthis one NOT!), the antagonist is well thought too, not your typical brainless idiot who only has one trick of their sleeves then became numbless zombie awaiting MC to reap their heads off. They are cunning, and planning every step of their action. Even the 'good guy' one isn't as holy as they firstly being described. They are human too, and make mistake.

The author really like to jump into the future by saying, in they will become famous, or this scene is going down on history as mark of beginning of something.

I found Easy Going Scan as a manhwa translator, but they manage to bring description of what happened in the novel eloquently. They put a footnote every time I, as non-Chinese speaker find some reference to stuff Chinese reader familiar with. In the comedy part, the phrasing can instill so much laughter that make me being stared weirdly by my sibling.

definitely worth read! <<less

This novel is too much of a mess. I can’t tell what kind of person the author wants to make the MC and I certainly can’t tell if he’s going to keep the story consistent. At first I thought this was going to be a fantasy novel with no modern technology but out of no where the author breaks the third wall and blatantly says “I’m adding this Mercedes because I can so deal with it” and then mentions sneakers and p*rn magazines. I kept reading a bit more to... more>> find myself disliking the MC more and more and so I dropped it.

While my review is based only on chapter 1 and 2 I can’t say my review was done too hastily. The story spiraled out of control so fast in just 2 chapters that I really can’t see how reading on would be a good idea. <<less

One of the funniest novels I have ever read! If you like a good laugh then this novel is definitely for you. The beginning chapters were confusing at first because it already portrayed the present lives of the characters with a few flashbacks on their past. But as the story progresses, it becomes more exciting because you don't know what will happen next with all the plotting, alliances, betrayals and secrets taking place with a lot of characters whose names can be somewhat similar sounding and again throwing you in... more>> for a loop. I really like military war novels like this with action, drama, romance and above all comedy. Worth the 5/5 rating. Thank you to the translators of Easy Going Scans for the job well done. Thumbs up! <<less

i have to say this first, "Don't be fooled by the lack of chapter number, one part of the chapter almost equal with one chapter in regular web novel"

I think it's a unique novel, and it has potential to be good. It's start rather slow but it's alright, we got a promising background and some interesting character. This novel deal with politics, war strategy, and of course some action. But, I don't know what the author thinking when he wrote about some modern stuff in this novel, it kinds of... more>> threw me off. Well, when you fed up with killing spree and bullsh*t luck MC in xuanhuan or meaningless harem n beta MC in JP WN, you should try this novel. <<less
