Pretending to Be an Overseas Trainee in a Boy Group Survival Show

Before getting tricked and scammed into transmigrating into a parallel world as a contestant on a boy group survival show, Lai Yudong was just a completely untrained college student with zero talent in singing or dancing.

He originally thought his only mission was to rely on some medical miracle to survive until the finals and somehow debut. But the moment he opened his eyes and found himself on the stage for the initial evaluation, he realized how serious the situation was—

“Next trainee, from LYD Entertainment: Miura Yuki.”

Lai Yudong: “…”

He’s done for—he doesn’t even speak Japanese!

The malicious system provided a feature to sync with live bullet comments.

Lai Yudong would glance at the comments from time to time and often had no idea what this season’s viewers were thinking.

Initial stage evaluation—

[Wow! A cold-faced cool guy!]

[This contestant gives off such a boss-like vibe! He must be super skilled!]

Lai Yudong: Please stop spreading false rumors.

Interacting with other contestants—

[Help, why does he hesitate to speak? Is the cool guy aura just a stubborn facade? LOL]

[He reminds me of my socially anxious self, www]

Lai Yudong: I am a foreigner.

During the performance—

[Are robots allowed to join survival shows now?]

[Begging for someone to give this handsome guy limbs that match his looks]

Lai Yudong: Filed a report, did my best.

During the ranking announcement—

[He’s crying, he’s crying, he’s crying!]

[Wuwuwu, no one can resist a socially anxious little brother pretending to be cold! No one!]

Lai Yudong: …(closes comments)

He’s not severely socially anxious!

He’s not a cold-faced boss either!

He’s just a poor newbie who doesn’t speak the language! (collapses.jpg)

MC is sensible. Characters are compelling and believable. Plot is engaging without stressing me out; I care about what's happening but no one's going to die. IMO it makes for a nice palette cleanser between novels with higher tension.

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it's solid, balanced, and so far, I feel I can recommend it without caveats. If it sounds interesting, go ahead and give it a try. At the very least, you won't walk away upset, frustated, or feeling like you've gotten s*upider.

Guys this novel needs more hype. Fans of idol shows should join the hype.

The main character feels so different from many other idol characters who get op rather quickly.

Lai Yudong isn't talented, he'll his first stage is a disaster. The reason he survives early on is because of his looks. But he's a hard worker and his ranks feel earned. The system is useless only there to tease our Yuki ?. So don't expect it to act like a golden finger because it isn't.

The side characters also have their own... more>> voices and personalities. I honestly wanted a lot of them to debut.

I hope some of them do even after the show ends.

The characters are all so good that you can't tell who'll debut. In novels you can usually tell based on who gets the most screen time but here you can't because they all do.

Which is why this novel will also have you teary eyed. The characters are so precious and don't feel on dimensional at all.

Give this a try I guarantee you're going to enjoy it. <<less

I love love this story. If you like idol stories, then this one is for you. I like how the author provided a fresh take on the idol genre and the bonds formed between the characters were done well. The side characters' personalities are also really good and I'm glad how the ending turned out. No regrets. Highly recommend!

This novel delivers everything you could want from a forced debut story and then some! The premise is gold: Lai Yudong, visually stunning but untrained, is forced by a System to become an idol or face being transported to awful genres in other dimensions. Crucially, the System gives Lai Yudong almost no benefits; he earns his way to the top through his own hard work and relentless practice—which makes his success all the more satisfying!

The System's one true feature is a running, live feed of hilarious comments from viewers watching... more>> the survival show (which is filmed like the Truman Show with a constant broadcast). These comments are so funny and add a brilliant layer of meta-comedy and tension.

The execution is flawless. The side characters are incredibly well-fleshed out, adding depth to the survival show. There is genuine tension in every elimination round and in figuring out the final debut lineup. Best of all, Lai Yudong is a genuinely kind MC—he completely won me over with his sincere warmth toward fans and competitors. And yes, the extras at the end are absolutely the perfect dessert to this amazing meal of a book. Read this now! <<less

A feel good novel from start to finish. It has no big conflicts and feels like a fangirl's story to tell how idol survival shows and its fandom works. If you haven't seen any idol survival show, you would think this is lame/unrealistic but most scenes here feel like it could happen in a show.

It was a pretty fun, quick read to me as an idol survival show watcher, but I think people who want some drama and depth will not like this. Not saying the story was just shallow,... more>> but the story is so lighthearted and is really not that novel that will make you cry or be emotional about. If you come into this story expecting more I think you would be disappointed.

Also anyone who has watched real idol survival shows and rooted for the underdog that didn't make it would probably like this, it basically feels like a fanfic even (not in an insulting way). <<less

My rating is completely for the first half.

I felt conflicted. Subjectively, I really enjoyed reading through, especially the first half where aside from the MC, other characters have their own distinctive charms. Their wholesome interactions with one another is one of the things I liked most in this story. It would have been nice if the pacing continued as such

However, things got all over the place in the second half? With the story suddenly becoming more focused on the MC, the plot holes previously unnoticed became increasingly become apparent too.

Spoiler

I find it frustrating that the live stream audiences' exposure increase dramatically to highlight the mc's strong points! There's even one whole chapter with only them. They are not even named characters, yet why have the other more important characters taken the back sit for them? They are sometimes funny but I'd prefer knowing the mc's AND the other named characters story. A pity that for the MC to dominate the whole thing, audience have to take up the narrative.

Also, aound the time the story became more centered around him, it would have been a good time to poke and prod more about the system: it's purpose/reason of sending taskers in different worlds and live out different people's lives. But instead got greeted with bunch of weird timeskips that sometimes made the flow of story awkward compared with the first half that each arc having closure. It's like a bunch of different scenes pieced together with most of them the MC shining with his positive characteristics. In turn, what was sacrificed was the other characters' distinctive charms. There still are some interactions but their personalities wasn't as fleshed out as before.

I'm also not convinced of the fact that the MC was able to have the final top 2 spot and tackle down other trainees that trained/been in the field several years. I do not want to invalidate his efforts but it's just that the narrative kind of feel forced. One of the reason he beat them is because some trainees are only good in one but fall short on others. Either good singer: bad dancer, good rapper: bad dancer: bad singer. Yes, reasonable enough. However...

How is it possible that compared to his miraculous skill transformation, the other trainees didn't seem to improved at all? Even if he beat them with hardwork of trainings and work attitude, they are all severely lacking when some are supposed to be talented/more experienced compared with the MC. It felt absurd.

[collapse]

Take this yap with a grain of salt. I really like the characters and such in the first half that the rate is just for it.

Despite the rating, I dropped this near the end because of the ridiculous thing that is revealed:

Spoiler

The system revealed that if the MC chosen to return to his real world, his data/identity will exit reasonably like dying in an accident and such... Excuse me, wtf is that? So what's that all grinding for? Huh?

IT'S SO ABSURD especially when you consider what will happen to the debut group that has a member that died; it's unlucky, and all their years of hard work to finally debut will all go down the drain. I don't know what's up with the author's head so I dropped

Fun read! It's not the deepest, but I really enjoyed it. The pacing was good, and the plot was exciting.

The MC's personality was pretty decent too. I think he comes off as a slightly smarter than average person. He does some dumb stuff (tbh, most of that wasn't his fault; he did his best with the hand he was dealt XD), but he's also clever and can react fast to unexpected stuff. I also like how he doesn't coast by on his good looks but works hard. He's also a... more>> really nice guy, and the relationships he has with his friends are great. That said, he can roast his enemies, haha. Love a balanced guy. The MC isn't spoonfed cheats, but he is pretty decently talented (not hopeless at least), which makes sense imo. Like, the story would be over so fast if bro couldn't adapt, but it'd also be boring as heck if he was OP. I feel like he has some plot armor, but it's still pretty plausible, I think. It's not always smooth sailing for him anyways.

I feel like the weakest bit would be the worldbuilding. The transmigration stuff was kinda whatever, and the system played a minor role. Not the worst, but it certainly didn't add much besides just serving as a plot device.

Also, the start was a bit rough because... well, it's an idol competition, so naturally there are like 50+ characters. Not all of them get introduced or meaningful roles, but I sure had a hard time trying to keep track of the characters. It got easier once each character got a notable trait or showed up more, but it was hard remembering names at the start.

That said, I wouldn't consider this a big flaw since the author actually managed such a large cast pretty well. I feel like there are 20-ish actually important characters, and I think it's good enough that I can remember and appreciate them.

I think the best part of the novel is the relationships that the characters have. The characters, the important ones at least, are also quite good once you get to know them. They may not be the most fleshed out (large cast), but I like them and remember them well enough. I like the MC, and I also have some faves from the side characters too. The way the MC grew out of his "fake" shell XD and slowly befriended them was great. <<less

Pretty light and fun read! I think you would enjoy reading this if you wanted to read a showbiz genre without heavy-darkside of the entertainment world. That being said, the story itself still feel realistic... even though, I do have questions about how the trainees managed their health or how does MC's stamina is so good despite not being a trained trainee (he's a 'normal' student).

The story after MC's debut is brief, but I don't find much trouble about it. I prefer author make the story short than dragging the... more>> story all over the place and ended up ruining a good piece of work. I'm glad the story end that way.

There's also some regret that there's no chance to read some characters' story (several trainee who didn't make it but close with MC), but overall I enjoy this story, I found the MC so adorable and the other characters personality and interactions with e/o are so fun to read... enough to pull me an all nighter to finisih reading it in one sitting <<less

To try and be short about this one: out of the ones I read with this kind of concept so far, it is my favourite! There is no great drama that doesn't get resolved as soon as possible. It's a very short and sweet novel; so it's mostly feelgood stuff. No real crisis or plottwist, just your standard idol survival show in novel form. The characters in it are charming and nice. The plot in regards to the system is also pretty standard, although the system is quite literally useless... more>> (it only allows for livestream comments to be shown, but it's not even spoilers or full public opinion) and might as well not be there at all, except to allow for this set-up. But whatever system is system ig. Personally idm but if you are LOOKING for system manipulation, this ain't for you.

The main character, Lai Yudong, is genuinely nice with whatever he tries to do. All of his abilities are his own, and based off of his hard work. He doesn't suddenly become OP. Sure he may have a pretty face, but out of everything that is the only thing "given" to him.

Spoiler

The last explanation that the system (or rather the author) provides at the end about how save files would work and branching timelines/worlds is very weak and I genuinely didn't understand the addendum at the end of that chapter. Whatever though because the general gist is that two worlds/timelines merged and that everybody got their Happy Ending.

[collapse]

The only thing I disliked was the fact it ends so soon : (. I wanted more of these characters, more of these people interacting. More idol activities but like, unfortunately I don't think that the author planned for any of that lmao. The author immediately started talking about them facing disbandment the moment they finished the story and the group finally debuted TT. And like sure maybe in China idol groups don't last but C'MON IT'S FICTION. It's a little hard not to feel insane about that. ONLY 23 CHAPTERS OF EXTRAS. And three of them I can't find anywhere ?. Although I'm glad it ended like this rather than having it drag... I JUST WANTED MORE OF THE GROUP TOGETHER. Oh well, I guess I will reread it or something if I feel the itch for it. Cause boy does it scratch it! <<less
