Hi all netizens.

I don't write reviews often, don't like to do so, since each and every persons eyes see different worlds so why intrude on a world of someone?

Just this once, I will do so, forgive me if its crude.

... more>> A good read I think.

First non-mindless, smartly written, heroic novel I have seen for a longer time

The hero does not see the world as black and white rather, follows his bushido without compromise.

Skills have kinda weird inconsistency but well, I guess for now, the spirit of the novel covers up that, and other details, quite well. Good pace.

If you like, tabletop RPG, Roleplaying and chivalry, mixed at times with vrmmo and modern world, I would recommend this one. Do take notice the story might not drag you in on the first few chaps, but once you get immersed, you would wish there would be more.

Author, I hope you will not loose out on your imagination, and keep it up!

For Honor! Bul-thar!

Ps. Thanks rainbowturtle, again a fine choice for translation. <<less

The manliest asian novel -10/10 IGN

i grew chest hair after reading it- BBC news

never gonna read a Chinese novel again -Meng Hao

... more>> Bul'tar - me 2k17

To begin with I would like to point out the fact that this novel is unlike (m) any other VRMMO novels that you may have read prior to this and feels more like an epic adventure type story

As far as story telling goes, there are few times that you will feel like you are reading a filler and even when the story changes PoV you wont feel like you have been cheated ; there are a few points in story that feel rushed and a few things that might have been retconed and some of the side characters don't get as much screen time as they deserve (Im looking at you Anor) but thats it.

There are quite a few things that I like about this novel, first of which being the fact that unlike most other protagonist he is not a hypocrite, he follows his own heart and sense of justice, he lives by a true warriors code, he refuses to kill those who are unarmed and unlike many other so called "Heroes" he sticks with his beliefs till the bitter end.

Spoiler

Also according to the code, Warriors don't need women hence his lack of harem and even love interest!

[collapse]

Another point that I like about this novel is how it feels like an actual RPG (not mmo), in RPGs when you help people and save towns they remember your kindness and depending on your actions they might help you at a later point (or become your enemy) and this novel manages to capture this point.

Have you seen the movie Avatar? The one with blue people in another planet?

This novel is similar to that, but instead of a story of human race wishing to terraform the planet/forest so they could live there.

This novel is about a vrmmo technology which the people who are not aware of was actually some sort of technology to produce an "avatar" to that world,

... more>> while people think games are "games" they are not aware that this alternate reality are being brought to destruction due to their actions,

the npc they killed, the war they created, the destruction they made, are all things that could no longer be "fixed or returned to it's state" when the deed had been done.

Our protagonist, a war veteran and retiree, all know about the feeling of being in conflict of war and the sorrow of having deaths of his companions.

Those feeling weren't "role playing" as per se what you mostly do in the game but real feeling triggered perhaps due to his past.

Our protagonist is no "gamer" or "techie" for that sense, so being in that VR for the first time, he felt realism of that world than just being game.

and due to that; him being "immersive", allows him unlock the secrets of this world.

A really fun, if flawed read.

Premise: The protagonist, Jung Ian, is an ex-soldier who used to work in a UN black ops team. He enlisted so that he could use his salary to take care of his little sister after their parents died, and after five years of service he left, went home and opened cafe a using the money he saved up.

Not long after that, a new craze shakes the world with the release of "Elder Lord", the world's first fully immersive VRMMO with living, breathing NPCs. Overnight an... more>> entire industry springs up around it that seems to even misplace most other forms of modern entertainment. At first Ian was skeptical about the game, but then he learned the her sister was at one point mol*sted in the game, so using that as an excuse he plunges into the world of Elder Lord without doing any research, choosing an orc as his character just to mess with his sister once they meet, but then during the preliminary training at the orc fortress he finds the orcs' way of life and ideals resonate with him, so much so that it slowly starts to blur the lines between the game and reality, so much so that he starts to question whether he have been playing a game to begin with.

Pros:

    • The protagonist is likable. He is proactive, hyper-competent and embodies the idea of a heroic warrior better than most designated hero protagonists in other stories.
    • Lots of impactful, emotional scenes and writing.
    • The VRMMO setting and the NPCs make sense, though only after a few really impactful revelations around the mid-point of the story.
Neutral:

    • No romance to speak of. While Ian has a lot of admirers, including a stereotypical "heiress to the biggest company ever" stalker, the only hint you get of an actual romantic relationship is in the last part of the very last normal chapter.
    • The nature of the VRMMO and its mechanics create a nice twist, but it kind of feels like a cheap get-out-of-jail-free card at at times.
    • The beginning is a little slow and the end is a little rushed, but the middle has a great pacing. In some ways, it reminds me of ISSTH, where the settings and contents of the individual story-arcs were often way more interesting and engaging than the grand overarching plot.
Cons:

    • The excuse of "the system
      Spoiler

      read: the grey god

      [collapse]
manipulated people's perceptions" comes up a bit too often to handwave away inconsistencies.
    • The large battles are fairly repetitive, with the same formula of "the good guys push the bad guys back" -> "the bad guys get reinforcements/bring in the heavy hitters" -> "all seems lost" -> "the cavalry comprised of the MCs friends and supporters show up in the nick of time" -> "the MC tips the balance" -> "victory".
    • The ending is pretty rushed and a little lame, with a literal deus ex machina showing up to resolve the final crisis.
    • The power scaling is bad, with the system being pretty lame, and the MCs skills improve in bulk at the end of every arc, which makes him just strong enough to be on equal footing with the next arc's enemies.
Overall, this was a pretty good story, with some amazing highs (it actually made me laugh out and tear up at times, something I really wasn't expecting) marred by repetitive storytelling, bad power scaling and a fairly underwhelming, if complete, ending. <<less

This novel is so tr*sh I regret even wasting time on it.

The first 20-30 chapters of this novel are very good, then it goes downhill faster than the speed of light. This novel doesn't know what it wants to be. It starts as an OK MMORPG novel then goes straight off the rails into isekai territories. The whole story makes zero sense, there are a million plot holes, dozens of character that are very prevalent in the first half then never get mentioned again. Then the final battle happens and... more>> the enemy is... entropy? Then after the final battle the story turns out to be nearly identical to the beginning of every "oh no, portal are opening in the world and monster are coming through" novel that are so prevalent in Korean novels in general. The author might as well have written an isekai novel because by the end of the story, nothing happens in the "real" world (as in the world the MC lives in).

Then we get to the main character. Despite what others might say about the main character development and how "he discover himself throughout his journey", he is bland and uninteresting, basically unchanged from chapter 50-ish until the end. He is a Gary Stu throughout the story, you never feels like he will lose or be disadvantaged by his loss. He is this perfect guy from the start who is righteous and just. It's like the majority of the "players" in the novel are scum compared to the main character. I don't know about you but people don't tend to mass mu*der or r*pe people in games, especially ones that can beg for mercy and scream for the lives in REALISTIC manners. Most people can't even watch a r*pe scene in movie let alone in VR RealVision tm. It's like basic human decency is missing from the novel and the MC is the only one who have it in abundance because he is so righteous and good.

There are also many other flaws in it. The logic is inconsistent. The power level of every character fluctuate depending on the author mood. The skill system makes zero sense. Enough plot holes to create a crater the size of the moon. It's just so bad. I don't get why people praise this novel. <<less

If you haven't yet, I recommend at least giving praise the orc a try. At first I put it off despite the good reviews because of the titles and because I was reading other novels, but I recently decided to give it a try. And I was definitely pleasantly surprised as it has quickly become one of my favorite novels. While there are things you can complain about in this novel, I find the way it tells its story and draws the user in to be incredible

As of writing this post, the novel looks pretty good so far. Your typical Korean VRMMO novel, but with a military twist.

The game setting is a highly realistic fantasy with NPC's being depicted as highly lifelike. (Even Player logout is explained by them are being 'cursed by the stars', hence why they disappear from time to time). The MC himself has military background and chose similar race called Orcs.

Novel Pacing looks okay. Though how much of a 'world' this novel has is yet to be determined.

Looking forward to how things... more>> go forward from here. <<less

This is the first review I have ever written for a light novel, and don’t be mistaken, I have read a lot. This series is the best game/isekai light novel I have ever read. Storyline superb, a ending and not 1000+ chapters with no ending in sight, great writing and to describe it all in one word...

Hi, when I started reading 'Praise the Orc', it didn't catch my breeze, but as the story progress I just knew this is one of a kind for me. The protagonist ideals, manliness, coolness, heroism, honor, respect, and of cource BUL'TAR.

The main character expressed his ideals through actions. Our main character Ian, chose to play in the VRMORPG game called Elder Lord, because of a simple yet valuable one. To protect his beloved ones. ... more>> Ian chose the Orc species, which he found out on his first day that you can only play as a warrior or a shaman orc. From there onward he met new friends, foes. New beloved ones, and an adventure to behold, but what made this story great? Ian indomitable spirit towards his ideals, manliness, coolness, heroism, honor and much more.

The bad parts of the story is that there is no sequel, truly sad, but I won't forget the short yet full of feeling that I experienced in 'Praise the Orc'.

Read it! Enjoy, I give it 5/5, and BUL'TAR! <<less

The grammar is fine, the dialogues are written okaily. My problem stems from the fact that so many characters are helpless without the orc's help they just can't solve their ret*rded problems without the protagonist's help no matter how simple. Also there's a bunch of ret*rded sh*t like the rehabilitation force, who are the worst scum of this game but somehow, they become saints after being shown one poor person and having a 10 min conversation with them. As usual the protagonist is a selfless Angel and the only reason... more>> he has anything on his back is that the author writes the characters that he helps to be equally as selfless. No character development. Protagonist and all of the characters are unrelatable, I feel nothing for them even if they were to die. The protagonist has no flaws. The allies are selfless angels who'd give their lives to save a small animal, the villains are comically so, they're just inhuman sad*st who kill and bully for the sake of it. Even in a video game, I don't think any major part of the player base could watch an npc in their eyes while stabbing them with their blade, because they have empathy and the author seems to be oblivious to that fact. Also the protagonist gets bullied for no reason. He walks into a bar orders cream pasta then some people sh*t on him because of how girly it supposedly is, they do so openly and they don't get their heads bashed in as a response, he f*cking orders a whole pig and after that they're somehow dumbstruck??! Might I add that the person they're bullying is a f*cking giant orc covered in tribal tattoos carrying a sword as big as he is ? That's a reason the protagonist is so unlikable. <<less

Praise the Orc, a novel that blends most of our ideals into a certain magnificent yet boring world that we try to get adjusted to yet are unable to do so as the pace of the novel changes so many times that at the climax I at least could barely wait for it to finish.

It starts with a VR theme where the users are all more or less sadists (even some of the NPCs). In this world our protagonist picks the crappiest species in the entire game, an orc,... more>> because he like the manliness of these weird green creatures. Like this he starts blending in with the game more and more until he becomes a NEET, well, more or less.

There are a lot of sad moments, people die, strong users abuse the so called NPCs, but our protagonist has the most righteous heart of all and brings faith to the NPCs and users. He becomes some sort of Messiah in this world and he remains true to this until the end when he truly becomes the MESSIAH.

But is this all? No, there are a lot of interesting things, weapons, skills, assimilation, side characters or even antagonists with a surprisingly logical purpose. But all of this is around our righteous protagonist, way to righteous, the perfect Korean Kirito with a higher dose of masculinity.

We have to deal with the protagonist past love life which affects most of his decisions regarding female users and NPCs. He is always trying to become some sort of symbol of justice but his sorrowful past where he was
Spoiler

abandoned by his mother, adopted only to be ignored once his stepsister was born, and enlisting in the foreign army to gather money once his adoptive parents dropped dead.

[collapse]
makes him look more like a psychopath that can't accept reality.

At the end of the story well, if you know the name Kirito you can guess just how great he will be. But the final twist.. Holly shit, I felt like f*cking killing the writer. He remained in the wrong world only for the other world to come to him. You will find out which is which if you read it.

In conclusion, read it, you might be able to ignore the things that annoyed me. The side characters are nice and the two close friends of our protagonist are especially so. My favorite is the necromancer that becomes really twisted. Even the gnome is awesome. The world is entertaining as long as the protagonist isn't doing some side quest. So yeah, read it. I'm quite sure you are going to enjoy a large part of it. <<less

Normally I would read a lot more chapters than only 30 before making a review, but to be completely honest this story is crap.

TL:DR - Waste of time, badly written, unrealistic MC motivation, no humor, boring characters, incredibly boring 'fight' scenes/action scenes, the only positive I have to say is: I like the choice of making the MC an orc, and a few things about the orc's I enjoyed, like their greetings, but thats it.

The premise could be interesting - a virtual reality so real, that it feels like... more>> it's all happening in another world. But the author is incredibly bad at making the story exciting, or get the reader to give 2 ***** about any of the characters or happenings.

There's no tension or feels, no comedic moments, the 'fighting scenes' are probably some of the worst written and frankly utterly boring and lackluster ones, i've ever read or seen. The author really needs to read/research other stories to maybe get an idea what makes an actual 'rpg'-based story exciting. Which this is not.

Sleed's review also talked a bit about the mc's motivation in starting the game, and his reasoning behind continuing playing the game, and I have to agree. It's a poor reason and crappy motivation, just like reincarnation stories that write a completely redundant prologue, just to forget about it after writing 1-2 chapters.

Why even make up such a bad excuse for the mc's motivation/background? Why not just write something like: The MC was a old war veteran, and after seeing the horrors of humanity and war, he needed a place to get order, stability and balance in his mind. So what better way than playing in a virtual reality world filled with beauty, wonder and fantasy? Or something that actually feels realistic and true to the mc's persona. <<less

Okay guys, I don't usually do reviews even because my grammar sucks, but for this novel I belive its my responsibility.

How to begin? Well in the early chaps I though it was just some cliche novel where the MC is a good guy and like to save people and bla bla bla, I really am full with these kind of mc's and prefer those bad mc's like leylin from WMW, but this novel has broken my concepts, the MC jung ian is a ex military but he is a really... more>> easy going guy that just want to be happy with his sister, when his sister invite him to play this new popular game, he isn't too enthusiastic but eventually starts to play to protect his sister, and wants to surprise her by choosing an orc, as it really don't fit with his personality, when he starts to play he feel free in this new world and learn how to be a warrior in the definition of orcs that is like some sort of chivalry, defend the weak, honor and such things. He practice to turn in a warrior under the super-harsh orc training and eventually is betrayed by his friend then he swears to eliminate some guilds and so the story develops.

What really have atracted me first in this novel was the AI of the npc's they were just like real people, not the usual npc in normal vr novels, but the feeling they gave was like that arc in reincarnator where the npcs were entraped people in a game, so I wanted to know how the author would develop this, and I have to say he really got me.

The diferential in this novel is not the game but the life, after reading this I was afraid of killing the pedestrians in GTA, so maybe is just that I really liked this novel and maybe you will not feel tha same way but this novel deserves a shot.

This is a really great vmmopg novel. It has been an amazing read so far. There are some ups and downs but its a great novel non the less. The story focuses on a MC who really loves his sister and he doesnt want her to be unhappy. He does everything for her after the death of their parents. Soon he discovers that his sister plays vmmorpg, he then decides to join this vmmorpg community because he fears that his sister might get bullied there. This starts his journey to... more>> becoming the 1st great orc warrior.

The novels feels very unique and the VMMORPG aspect feels like its really done well compared to other generic novel. All in all its a amazing novel so far. I cant say anything for the future but I recommend everyone to not judge the book by its cover and try this novel. <<less

This novel seems promising as of right now, hmmm it's the typical VRMMORPG KR novel type. But what's unique on this one is that the MC didn't unlock a secret class or anything but he chose the Orc which was the mob/mistaken class of the Elder's Lord.

Praise the orc is a journey unlike any other. It is not a plain textbook vrmmo novel and it is one of the best novels that ever came out of Korea in my opinion.

This novel has a story that will make you unable to stop reading when reading at first my excitement was very high and I got goosebumps. I binged it in 2 days and want more.

Story:

This novel tells the story of Jung Ian, who runs a small coffee shop and served in the army. Jung Ian doesn't like... more>> Elder Lord at first but wants to join to protect his sister. As a joke, Jung Ian chose to be an orc to surprise his sister but as the story progresses, you will begin seeing the world of Elder Lord and learn of all the species and the game. Reading this novel will change your mind entirely, you will doubt your own honour and question your living. After finishing this novel, I felt amazed at how I was living and how I didn't try hard enough.

Pros:

You get a novel unlike anything you've ever read.

You get a novel with a good main character, someone who doesn't abandon honour and who can inspire you even in reality.

The pure joy that this story gave me could outshine stars

Cons:

You might never find another novel like this

Negative reviews:

After reading some of the negative reviews I realise that people don't read enough of a novel before rating it. I'm not saying you have to read it all but at least read enough to understand the storyline properly. I saw someone talking about how the NPC AI wasn't talked about but it was, they just didn't read up to there, they didn't even get that late into the story. They are all bad at judging novels otherwise they would've seen the beauty of it and appreciated this story, one that's quality is far and few.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, you should read this.

The story has a weak start, then starts becoming better and better and until it becomes a Masterpiece.

I see some "readers" that have read at most 10 or 20 chapters and assumed all the story is the same, well that's typical in mentally handicapped persons.

All of them complain about the treatment MC gives to NPC, that the reason why he starts playing is ret*rded and so on. Reality is ... more>>
Spoiler

The game is not a game, it's another world. All the NPC are living people from that world. The story starts with a s*upid sister premise that doesn't affect the story, later on betrayal, promise to become stronger to protect, (I like the ORC warrior code) starts unraveling the story of that world, syncronizes fully, discovers the truth etc.

[collapse]

I would recommend you to read at least 75 chapters before starting to evaluate this story.

The more I read it the more I like it. For me is one of the few real 4.5/5 star novels in novelupdates. <<less

There's very little to say, it's a good read, a relaxing story to read on a lazy afternoon. It doesn't shine in any way exceptionally, from time to time it tries to be a little bit philosophic, sometimes a little bit touching, but in the end it's a simple story that imitates World of Warcraft. The VRMMO aspect of it is done quite delicately without constant popups giving you meaningless number for every single strike the MC does. It gives you vague descriptions without littering the text which is quite... more>> unique in the genre.
Instead the experience is more story driven. Negative reviews miss the point of the adventure getting hang up on the idea that the MC is an overprotective brother, but tbh so far it is a non-factor. Instead it's a story about the MC immersing himself in the world (whisper: of warcraft). They complain about the exaggerated importance of the npc's.
That's the beauty of it, I want to be like the MC and immerse myself to that level in a gameworld. That would be amazing.

This story was a pleasant surprise. If I rate like every novel updates user then it would be 5 stars. I usually try to keep that rating for masterpieces, so it's a 4 for now.

There is the usual litRPG nonsense that everyone who has ever read moonlight sculptor or similar novels can recognize, but the story gives good twists and is genuinely funny. However compared to other similar stories, stats/levels in this one give little difference. It's more about how immersed you are in that world and your skill. Not... more>> to mention that there are no spongy characters that don't die from strike to heart or beheading. Yes someone might have good regeneration, but if you are stabbed in heart or brain - you die. If your arm gets cut through, you lose the arm. This is not bad change as it lets you focus more on the world and characters and gives you better immersion.

It's a decent read and I would recommend it.

P.S. Reading this, will make you feel like a manly warrior. Bul'tar! <<less

i started this series because it had alot of 5-star reviews. But tbh I hated it.

  • the MC is way too judgemental. He wants to play the game like its a reality, but he forgets that people play it to enjoy or make some money. Later on it may turn out to be a separate real world or some simulation but currently its just a VR game.
  • the MC seems to be knowledgeable about everything. He was a good/ top soldier but that doesn't mean he is an expert in every field. Eg there was a scene in which someone was trying to sell vegetables (and the person claimed to have training specially for the vr game). The person fails miserably but MC succeeds. He throws out love tips like hes some controller of a harem.
  • the successor of the company that made the game conveniently has a HUGE crush on the MC cuz he saved her.
  • the BIGGEST issue is that there is no sense of a constant and defined power level. This game is considered to be the sh*t and even then after joining for just 1-2 months he's able to beat ass. The level of his opponents is never mentioned. He easily defeats players that were 'famous in the region'.
  • the complicated plots seem childish and the mindset of characters can be defined by a traditional 'Chuunibyou'.
it would still be fine if it was a funny novel like LMS (would still not reach that level) but it tries to a serious and kinda dark novel and it fails miserably. Everything is painted as black or white. A disappointing novel.
