The once-bustling and noisy streets were now filled with an eerie blanket of silence.

Hoarse and frenzied whispers lingered high above the heavens, and an indescribable ancient giant lurked in the shadows of the bottomless ocean.

A mysterious plague had outbroken, and natural disasters wrought the Earth. Global pandemic and catastrophes had the panicked masses seeking illusory shelters from the devastation, day and night.

A bloody shower poured over the land as the streaks of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the ill-intentioned gathering of ravens above. Nevermore, nevermore, quoth the ravens.

“We can see that this malformed creature has twelve pairs of ribs like humans, but also has a “transverse bone” that humans do not possess…”

In the medical school, Gu Jun continued bringing down his scalpel, illustrating the abnormal thoracic structure of the malformed cadaver on the dissection table to the surrounding students.

Ominous and treacherous times had descended! Truth and logic had crumbled, order warped into a frenzy. Humanity can only forge ahead through the power of intelligence and wisdom.

It gave me strong SCP Foundation, X-Files and especially Lovecraftian vibes, with an eastern chinese flavor to it, am pleasantly surprised.

So far the plot seems to have supernatural and paranormal elements with hints of Gods/Old Ones, other world/dimensions and the Occult to the story shrouded behind brewing conspiracies and an impending apocalypse. Our protagonist is a medical student who lost his parents in a unknown incident tied to the conspiracy, hence he is trying to uncover the truth. Moreover he has latent psionic or spiritual ability and affinity to the... more>> occult so he ends up joining a secretive bureau that handles supernatural and paranormal threats, where he mostly works as a consultant to the Mobile Task Force. Majority of the cases are more to do with supernatural & paranormal diseases and infections. So its not the typical Van Helsing hunting monsters. That said, theres still plenty of field work involved since modern medicine has limited effect on supernatural diseases. Our MC and an attached Mobile Task Force will have to do field work like finding the source of the disease, investigating clues or hunting the vector.

Now the protagonist is pretty much the cliche hero figure, righteous morals and good guy, wants to save everyone, he is a trainee doctor with talent in surgery of sorts. In my opinion this is probably the most bland protagonist archetype. I hope author introduces more dynamics to the story to pressure the MC and cause him to cast doubts on his morals, rethink his idealistic mentality. The protagonist also acquires a "game system" ability where he has stats, attributes, skills and the system will also issue quests and rewards though it is tied heavily to the medical and occult field. This is a BIG RED FLAG.

So far it has not turned into a power fantasy rpg or xianxia/xuanhuan, which is a relief. I think the novel has much better potential as a supernatural SCP/X-Files type of mystery & thriller story rather than a tr*shy power novel of becoming immortal, ascending to godhood or gaining levels to get superpowers. I prefer a "human" story instead of a power fantasy, NOT about ascending to godhood or turning superhuman but instead humans being cautious when fighting the unknown, like Lovecraft and SCP. That said, I'm not optimistic, some minor details to the story seem to point towards MC being related to the gods and becoming godlike, kinda goes against the point of having Lovecraft & SCP themes. Bad thing however is that this game system makes everything too convenient and deviates from the concepts preached by SCP & Lovecraft.

Firstly, the rewards given from the game system are basically too useful or powerful, they come in a form of knowledge (diaries, pictures etc), abilities (resistance to mental corruption, spells etc) and items. The system practically reveals the answers to the various supernatural occurrence and the abilities & items conveniently gives him the upperhand in occult battle. I expected a more investigative and analytical approach to the plot and characters to draw brilliant deductions, but I'm left disappointed. Moreover this literally kills off the 'mystery' and 'exploration of the unknown' aspect of the Lovecraft/Occult themes when MC gets directly spoon fed answers. MC brush it off as "revelations" when questioned by his team about it.

Secondly, the rewards system allow MC to bypass restrictions and price needed for dabbling in the occult. When you think about Cthulhu, SCP and the Occult, what concepts and lessons do they convey? Price of power, sacrifice through blood or sanity. While fighting monsters, you risk becoming one too for when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you. Mortals are not meant to wield the power of Deities. Our MC basically gets cheats to help him and his team bypass this, or with minimal repercussions. THIS is the problem, it basically throws away all the philosophical meanings in the great works of the Lovecraft, SCP and other Occult mediums. Author is really missing the point here. Also this serves as the author's "magic" to enforce the MC's moral values. It contradicts the themes.

The novel goes into detail on the practical and technical knowledge of the medicine field. I'm no doctor so I can't really comment on the plausibility and accuracy unlike in other novels like Release that Witch (I'm in the engineering field). Also expect a lot medical terms and jargons throughout, half the time I wish there was some form of illustration/drawings to help readers digest the narrative. I'm not sure how far they'd go with this but I think chances are it'll be toned down later on. Moreover I believe later down the line the believability will be skewed once the supernatural elements sets in.

As for the secondary characters, they lack the proper treatment they deserve. This novel is too centric on the MC. Character development for the supporting cast is shallow. Also haphazard and sudden, one moment they're strangers, the next they're inseparable. Interactions and relationships are not fleshed out. They are generally lacking presence and significance throughout the novel. The same can be said of the antagonist, they all feel like throw away characters rather than being essential to the storytelling.

So far I'm liking the narrative mainly because of the themes (Lovecraft & SCP) involved. This novel has everything I love, Elder Gods, Old Ones, the Occult, Paranormal Beings, Supernatural believes & myths, Cults, Mobile Task Force from SCP verse etc, with a touch of chinese mythos. However, I'm disappointed with the RPG-like system that is pretty much a plot convenience. Most damning, is how the novel trivializes the philosophical concepts of Lovecraft and the Occult. Novel has not turned into another power fantasy and I hope author keeps it that way though I'm not optimistic, I have an inkling MC will eventually be elevated to godhood. Secondary characters and antagonists desperately needs more attention to their character development. <<less

It starts off well, but quickly becomes one of those "protagonist does everything perfectly and everyone is awed at him" novels

The horror wasn't there for me. The things he cut up were more interesting than they were scary.

There is a lack of anything to keep me reading. It's chapters and chapters of boredom.

The Main Character is also extremely boring. For a so called "Tycoon" he is so bloody bland. There is not 1 characteristic about him which stands out.

One of the most accurate and knowledgable "medicine" novels I've ever read. The main character is definitely not a robot and has an established past as a genius medical student, an orphan to parents working for a shady agency, and a wastrel who chased girls instead of his career. But that is definitely not the extent to which his character is fleshed out. After being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, specifically a type of brainstem cancer called a glioma, he changes his ways and pursues information about his parents. This... more>> leads him to the very same place they disappeared, involving him with the government, a shady agency that could very well be a cult, and the influences of a strange power that installs a "system-like" apparatus inside of him. What this means for our protagonist is a correlation to unknown knowledge that could very well be used for good or evil (very likely).
Spoiler

The strange power he sees on the submarine introduces him to the concept of non-human organisms that could possibly induce apocalyptic results. After experiencing certain triggers to information procured by the system, the protagonist goes through visions of a lost world, obtaining knowledge about terrors formerly unbeknownst to him and a certain line of text that would lose its effectiveness if I spoiled its significance. Just remember that he is a genius, and the system only serves to emphasize this point. However, obstacles and opponents still lurk around the corner... no one is willing to explain what is happening, but all will be revealed with time.

If you really want to understand this complex plot and engross yourself with a slew of medical terminology and spine chills, READ THIS. <<less

A great disappointment.

It has so many problems that it's ridiculous.

-Bland MC who is doing nothing but mindlessly training 24/7.

-Useless system that is good at nothing but low-level foreshadowing. If it gives some kind of new info than you can be sure that in the next 2 chapters this info will play a very important role. Once MC got a model of some unknown monster for the first time. The next day he is doing a dissection of its species as a test to join a 'very mysterious' organisation. Similar situations... more>> occured several times in 100 chapters.

-The said government 'mysterious organisation' is the greatest joke of this novel. Most of the higher-ups are as blind as bats and its management system is no less hilarious. After fighting 'the unknown' for several decades it wouldn't be a mistake to say that they are completely useless. The only thing they are good at is acting mysterious.

-As mysterious as this government organization trying to portrait itself to be, they have 0 info about the unknown, no specialists in mysterious energy a.k.a spells (heck, the higher ups don't even believe that spells exist after fighting against them for decades), no understanding of supernatural language that appears everywhere in the novel, etc. Basically thugs acting high and mighty or a low-level special ops at best.

-As I've mentioned above even the best special squad of this organisation has to wait for MC to resolve everything while being useless. In the future, when MC will become even more OP, he will probably be the only usefull character in this novel.

-All the 'horror' in this novel is nothing but disgusting mess. All the monsters and diseases are like that. It feels like author has a special place for all kinds of worms, parasites and similarly disgusting creatures in his heart.

-It also needs to be mentioned that all the paranormal phenomenons have no logic backing them whatsoever. Everything the way it is just because author said so.

Is there something good about this novel? Well, actually yes. The idea wasn't bad, the writing quality and translation are pretty good, but as I've said above, this novel is severely lacking in details and big picture. Medical terms and operations looks believable (though I'm not an expert in it and can't say anything for sure), but if it's a good thing or not is quite questionable. I was bombarded by lots of medicine-related terminology and can't say that I've particularly enjoyed it. <<less

A very good start. A little bit like "Great Doctor Ling Ran" but more on the darker side. I think I'll like this one more. I can't wait for a doctor/apocalypse genre to pop up and finally one was translated. This Novel actually shows the beginning of everything before the collapse happen and there is also the cliche parents missing trope but for this one it added to the mystery spice. Hope it carries to be good through the whole story.???? RECOMMENDED??

In the beginning, I personally liked this. All the supernatural arcs and the storyline for all of them were pretty good. I'd say people should give it a read. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could instead of four.

I gave the novel a 4.5 stars, because ... more>>

the romance plot had descended around 350+. I have nothing against romance, (hell I have over 100 bookmarked in my reading list) but I came here thinking I'd enjoy a time to a single protagonist. But suddenly, they started dating after the Dagon arc and then BAM. She suddenly gets pregnant.

I was pretty excited when the Dagon arc ended and the Witch arc started, I thought that he'd go through a little more pain of losing his parents, his captain, and experience more scrutiny because he's starting to suffer symptom-like of PTSD.

I agree with reviewer deathcoy when they speak about the side characters. If the author had slowly and sneakily woven a better picture of Wang Siyu (the girlfriend of mc) then maybe I wouldn't have been so against the romantic plot. (My House of Horror Stories does that job well done, it was totally unexpected of the romantic subplot but deep inside of you, you knew it would happen and is totally accepting of it.) I understand that the MC wants to have a family but it technically did not have to use a lover as a family and the only family. Friends can also be a family like Chen Zixuan (I may have forgotten his name). Some may argue that a lover is closer than a friend and I know it is along the lines of that, but this is not what I'm here to rant review about.

[collapse]

However, the themes used were really interesting. I hope to see more novels that are similar to the supernatural vibes that have a good plotline. This novel does lack details in some sense, where the details can weave and connect the story better. The suspense of

gradual greater evil/darkness

[collapse]
is used very well to keep the reader to keep reading. Where mysteries and questions are gradually answered over time. Alike LoT where the novel also gradually pulls readers along the storyline.

But I bid this novel adieu. If my tastes are able to change, then maybe I will read this again. However, still give the novel a try. <<less

First of all, I wanna say this fiction is startlingly original and the medical knowledge in there "seems" first rate. I'm not a doctor, so I don't know shit. It just sounds extremely real. Regardless of what I say below, I am a harsh critic and I absolutely recommend you read this. I am teetering on the edge of upping this to 4 stars. So I don't really think the synopsis describes this series very well. Let me add a small addition to it.

This story is basically a hardcore surgery... more>> novel but instead of operating on humans, the protagonist dissects various horror monsters. Zombies, tree people, etc.

The horror comes from the descriptions of the various monsters. I did not find this novel to be scary. To me, it's about as scary as a Goosebumps childrens horror novel. However, I do find the horror descriptions endlessly interesting. I don't really find horror novels scary at all honestly, so I'm probably a bad audience in that sense. I feel like they are legit horror descriptions, but I just don't find literary horror scary. The characters are hit and miss. The way all the characters seem to hate the protagonist is just not justified. He was a lazy student, that's why they all hate him. That's their only justification. Professor Gu on the other hand has a bit more reason to be angry, but no one else does. Weather someone fails out the course has nothing to do with you, so leave them alone. Is that so hard to understand. I certainly won't partner with them in group work, but that's about all.

The issue with the plot is more in the awkward justifications and developments. Everyone is screaming at the protagonist, "copy the files to a USB", but the protagonist just carries the phone with him everywhere instead. Or the awkward method the protagonist used to get into the school trip. It was tantamount to begging.

The system is also crap. Everyday the protagonist will get offered three missions and only one of them is even possible to attempt. And that one mission is tailor made for the protagonists current situation. The system itself operates more like a situational cheat in more ways than one. It grants skills and knowledge that seem random at first, but five chapters later, allow the protagonist to perfectly dissect a strange monster he's never seen before. Not monsters in general, but that specific monster he came across a day later.

The progression element is also bad. This is one of those, "The protagonist is a god at everything he tries the first time" and they rub it in your face every three seconds. He gets perfect scores on everything, masters new techniques the first time he sees them, etc etc. Really tiresome. <<less

This novel is a pleasant surprise for me as I was hungry for the gems similar to LoM and My House of Horrors. Both said novel attempted to create "horror" but they failed and turn it to something else, not this novel. It follow the story full of cosmic-horrors from H.P Lovecraft work and slowly turn the world into apocalyptical-state. Unknowingly, the main character, whom is a "Chosen one" has cheat-like ability that helped him becoming a great doctor, became the target of occult disasters which have to rely on... more>> any mean including his "cheat" to save people from cultists, dark force represented epidemic. No, he is not Gary Stu. He has all the talents, but it is necessary. Without talent like him, the world is doomed, and without him, the humanity will be reduced to a speck of dust. Even that, he's still imperfect, but still a hero.

If you don't like hero and stuff, well, this story may not suit you. However, you may miss out something special. <<less

Brilliant! I am tempted to pay for advanced chapters. I have to really appreciate the quality of translation. Author is very well read and writes at very high level which the general audience of webnovel does not deserve.

Regarding the genre of novel it has mixture of psychological horror mystery thriller. It’s one of the most unique novels on the site. The MC is very logical. The world building has been brilliant and lot of attention is paid to small details. There is deep mystery and background of MC is very... more>> chaotic to say the least. The author balances the horror element very well and some chapters ending send shivers down the spine.

I am a pessimistic man. Brilliant as this novel is, it’s not going to be appreciated by most of people here who look for instant gratification Mary Sue cultivation novels. I am pretty sure webNovel considering the decreased revenue will drop like it did with countless other novels.

So, I can only humbly request people who really like the novel to support the novel with votes and money to keep the translation ongoing. We all know the pain of quality translation being halted. So, let’s support the author and translator so that complete novel translation comes to fruition.

Bottomline:

I would consider this to be one of the finest novels on this site and this deserves not a web novel format but real publishing. I have been reading a lot of web novels from 2015 and this is finest I’ve ever read even though I don’t particularly like novels interspersed with horror. <<less

Strictly speaking this is not an enjoyable novel, but it is interesting. You might find "worse" and low effort novels more enjoyable than this, but you'll be hard pressed to say it is better written or devised.

To sum up the worst points of this novel: pointless system, too much medical terms/referenced researches that make reading a chore and the odd competitiveness between different sections of Phecda. You may also find the MC boring, that's a matter of opinion. And if you came for horror, that ain't it.

The first thing that... more>> falls flat is the system. Not because it conveniently gives out quests and rewards based on current needs and activities, but because it is a placeholder, likely a tool to circumvent chinese restrictions on horror/supernatural. It could literally meld into MC's frequent headaches and flashbacks almost seamlessly. The author takes it seriously to build MC's suspicious side, but it's hard to hide how pointless it is when you go by chapters without any meaningful interaction with it. People should question themselves why an author who goes so far as to reference so many medical terms, actual researches, places, etc, would make such a pointless system. The answer is that he didn't want to make it to begin with.

Following that, the second thing is the onslaught of medical technical terms as well as scientific experiments referenced latter on. That is also explainable considering the kind of book it is, and it helps build that grounding which makes fantasy more believable. But it's not really enjoyable to read, those parts become a chore and they're not important enough to make you research the terms, so you'll just bulldoze through it unfortunately.

MC's character is rather bland, but people are being misleading if they describe it as having a boring personality or none whatsoever. He is well characterized as a strong minded and analytical character, immediately bouncing back from his dissipative attitude from before everything started. He doesn't rub you off as shallow, and having an unwavering mind/spirit is something he both needs and strived to solidify. If anything, you might be put off by the fact he has no real control over his destiny most of the time, which makes it feel like he's a passive party throughout the story. It's one of the perks of being basically a grunt on a highly secretive and powerful governmental organization. A valuable member, sure, but a grunt still. That does leave a bad taste, though, the MC is powerful himself but ultimately powerless in the decision making.

The next point I have to make is the sense of incongruity and competitiveness between different sections of Phecda (the government org), specially over MC's potential. Everything else is not surprising, considering bureaucracy doesn't have to be efficient and never has been in many places. When the mortality rate is high amongst new members, you can't do anything about it if the leading figures, who were both capable members and lucky enough to last until they got so far, make their decisions based on standards that no longer apply. It's not a rule of thumb that every old person has a hardened mindset, but it's strange to hope for it to change or learn quickly, specially in China where elders culturally should enjoy more respect from youngsters. It's already more than one can hope for that every single member seems to genuinely give his life for his job, taking into account the seriousness of the situation. But that aside, considering all of them are aware of the priorities of the organization, and their lives are basically their jobs, they should be clear on which person gets assigned to which position without a need to fight over personnel. No matter how talented MC is, this is just dumb and feels particularly off after a gruesome mission with lots of losses or in the middle of a bad situation. For instance, in one mission a guy loses his leg and may lose other, he has to undergo amputation on a field operation, it's strange to find the time to appreciate MC's medical skills when your friend is just over there moaning with a painful expression. If the MC magically cured both his legs or did something truly impossible for medicine, sure, but that's not the case and the guy will lose a leg no matter the outcome. Like wtf author.

So to finish the point above, whenever MC does something that surpasses expectations, it is quite annoying to have higher ups fight to grab him to their respective departments, or having impressed onlookers who shouldn't be impressed given the situation.

Lastly this is not really horror, and not strictly a medical novel, which is a bit of a waste considering how well built it is. Much of the action eventually transitions outside MC's initial aim which is to be a doctor and save lives, and it plays out more like Doom: the novel. But it's more strange and gory than scary, mostly because everyone is mentally prepared for the worse and have actually seen the worse first hand. They are prepared to lay down their lives the moment they begin their training and step into the field, and all those who haven't passed a heavy load psychology test won't get the chance to see action. At any point they can be forcefully retired, that's how harsh it is. If not for occult energy, I highly doubt those people would be even capable of feeling fear.

The major selling points of this novel, and unfortunately it will feel like I'm selling it short, is that the story is actually interesting and well planned, the characters are memorable and there is a clear direction to follow. It's not hard to make concessions for fantasy blurring with reality, because the author goes all out on the science department, although the attempt to make it a reality through it rarely works. Then again, just concede, it's ultimately fantasy and wouldn't have worked out either way. The world building is a strong pillar in this one, and if not for the slow pace I would have given it an extra star. <<less

Amazing novel, gives mysterious and Cthulhu/outer being vibes like Lord of the Mysteries and horror vibes similar to My House of Horrors (although not as much horror). Props to the author and translator as author definitely has been to a medical school or studied medicine in college as the medical and surgical terms are appropriate and well-used.

The novel starts off strong with MC getting a system although it isn't used that much throughout the novel (I personally like this as the novel focuses more on the mysterious/supernatural vibes and the... more>> MC as a doctor working on the front lines of the supernatural instead of the system itself. MC does get certain quests related to the supernatural but again its not the primary focus of the novel and if you came for a system novel, then you came to the wrong place).

As the novel progresses, you learn more about the supernatural and the "visions" that the MC keeps having which is super fascinating to read and learn about. It has a natural plot progression and we along with the MC get to learn about what is happening to his world.

Others might say that the MC is bland or that he is too perfect/OP but I say otherwise. He is a hardworking med student who was already a great student (not the best) before the system, the system merely helps out his skills whether it be surgery or getting certain supernatural items. The novel even says that there are better surgeons (and also shows them operating better than MC) and better med students then the MC, but because MC has visions towards the supernatural and has a past related to the supernatural, then he obviously will do better than them.

Some cons:

  1. The system currently isn't that important. I personally feel like this novel would've been better without one
  2. If you're not interested in medicine, it might be off putting, but just like how I can enjoy cooking shows when I don't cook much, I can certainly enjoy reading about medicine in my novels.
  3. I wish the author put more emphasis on certain side characters. Only MC and like 1-2 other people are related to the supernatural in their past. It would be cool to learn more about them but the novel is mainly about MC for now. (Hopefully in the later chapters, they will be of more importance or learn more about them.)
Overall still a great novel. I would recommend it if you like mystery/horror and some medicine as well. 5/5 for me. <<less

Honestly, this is a hidden gem. It starts off real slow at first. In fact I dropped the book in the first five chapters, but I eventually returned because I was craving something horrific.

The whole book is steeped in lovecraftian horrors and stomach-churning images, but that's exactly what drew me into this. The power-upgrade system hardly takes up space. Aside from helping him improve his medical skills and preserving his life in a crunch, it doesn't do much else.

The MC is, in one word, human. He doesn't aspire to be... more>> the one who stands above everyone else and holds the greatest power. His major driving force is to save lives in his capacity as a doctor, and any supernatural abilities he gains in the course of that, then it's a plus.

On the other hand, the side characters are a bit one-track-minded (or rather, rigid in their characterization), but we do get to see a few glimpses of their different sides.
Spoiler

On a side note, I still have no idea how Gu Jun and Wu Siyu's relationship progressed to romance. Kinda fell out of the sky to me. They do make a good pair though.

[collapse]

There were a couple of times I got lost in the medical jargon and scientific paradoxes, but that didn't detract from my reading experience.

The only gripe I have would be the cultists. They just tick me off in every way possible. Plus, they're never-ending. But I guess that could be a good point if the novel made me feel this way.

Overall, if you're looking for a medical drama with a dash of lovecraftian horror and the warmth of humanity, you should give this a shot. <<less

this novel has no brake at all, MC is being thrown to one problem to another problem with no stop, which is quite tiring to read, the pace is incredibly fast that so many things happening in just several days, it's make me wonder how MC arent dead just from overworking

lot of medical term in the earlier arcs and the author arent doing a good job explaining them, really confusing read and I wonder if the author just copy pasted them from wiki just to get more words limit

MC is... more>> bland, he dont have anything special other than his rationality, but thankfully the stories compensated this flaw

the earlier stories is amazing, theres lot of originality there and I found myself hooked up with the mysteries, they are morbid and fascinating

well just like other chinese novel, the author only do good job on the earlier story and then it goes ret*rded the more stories goes

this novel goes from taking a bit of hp lovecraft references into a fullblown fanfiction with chinese as the center of the world, the idea of "chinese is the best" is quite strong the more story progressed, thankfully the author dont have beef with japanese

this novel is tragedy and the author dont force the plot to keep everyone alive, many of mc's close friends died and even
Spoiler

during one of the arc, MC ask shub niggurath to save the world from nyarlathotep, everything need price and MC paid hardly for this, every unborn child in the world is sacrificed, including mc's child with his girlfriend

I'm going to give it four stars just because it kept me interested for so long. However, there are quite a number of problems with this novel.

First of all, the system. It's quite useless, and all it does is foreshadow certain events, spoonfeed the main character the answer to various mysteries, etc. Of course, it does give the main character "skills" that he can train like other novels with a system, however this is basically an afterthought. So far, he has a skill that keeps his hands steady (because hes... more>> a doctor) and a skill that increases mental power, basically. However, the more you read the more and more the system becomes out of place.

Second, the secret government organization. So, this has a lovecraftian-esque plot, with R'yleh and Cthulhu mentioned a couple of times. This government organization has been fighting against various supernatural things, investing supernatural things, supernatural diseases, etc. Despite this, the organization is so f*cking s*upid that despite fighting against literal zombies that can use spells, having multiple people fall into spell-related traps, and have a member that can basically use spells, they didn't believe spells existed. Theres so many points I can think of that can portray the organization as extremely s*upid, it's not even funny. It's to the point where its a plot hole, it makes no sense for why it's so ignorant.

Oh also, I have yet to read into the whole system and why it exists, which will probably be relevant later in the novel, but I can't help but notice that it kinda undermines the whole power system. Magic/spells in this novel are not like most other power systems. You have to have a sacrifice to use spells. In this case, you are sacrificing some of your mental power to something beyond human understanding in order to use a spell. The system directly contradicts this, but oh well.

Last point is, the doctor quickly veers away from medical stuff to your average mystery shounen novel, so it's really disappointing on that part.

Overall, a good and interesting novel, but it could've been a lot better had the author thought more things out. <<less

The first 100 chapters or so are fun but I'm slowly noticing a trend of weird cultist like elements in this and MC goes from being a doctor to mystery cult leader so I'm not sure if the quality is going to drop.
Plus MC is super bland. I feel like I'm reading about this AI who's just going through training to get stronger. The system elements as well is a huge downer because the MC literally gets information from it freely without consequences. I hate that! The main point of the supernatural is that mortals can't access or fight without sacrifice or corruption. So the system itself is a contradiction and undermines the themes and the horror in the novel.

Plus the characters. The characters besides the MC were really poorly treated. They seem like cardboard cutout and there's basically no development of side characters. MC too feels really bland and boring.

Also MC doesn't really do much treatment work. He kinda gets rid of the plagues by destroying stuff so there's only about 50-65 ch worth of medical stuff. It's more of a mystery/supernatural story like My house of horrors but the mysteries are destroyed by the system itself cause the answers are revealed.

Also the govt organization is a mess. I mean the best team that has been supposedly fighting the mysterious forces for years are sitting ducks and MC has to save them. So this is getting more and more like those novels where only MC is actually useful and solves everything with his op powers. Can you believe that an organisation that has been dealing with weird occult stuff won't equip themselves with knowledge of the occult? It's ridiculous.

so far the medical terms are accurate enough so I'm rating it 3 stars for now.

If the quality drops I might change my rating. (I just hope the quality won't drop like it did for many other CN's)

This story stays exciting and adventurous from the go, every arc flows into the next and there's never a "rest" arc. It's just go go go, and you can't stop binging. However it's 4 stars and not 5 because a lot of the content isn't my cup of tea, but it certainly keeps things interesting and exciting!

Started of like a doctor simulator with ESP elements and went full wuxia with magic and adventures later. I can't understand why author decided to change everything so drastically. Doctor part was mildly interesting, not an actual horror in any way, just a thriller with gore. And then started wuxia part, all logic went to the drain, MC constantly get sidetracked by random mysterious encounters, seeking some spell books of questionable importance, playing hero and savior based on vague words from some random "shadow" he met. Maybe it get better... more>> again later, but it wasn't that good in the first place, so I dropped. <<less
