Stereotypical "MC good, males other than MC bad/dumb/is MC's s*ave, China good, Japan+Korea evil pigs" braindead type of novel.

It had a somewhat-ok premise and I really tried to like it, but it just gets more and more cliché like any other dumb novels in the faceslapping genre.

I hope one day we get all the shitty novels of the faceslapping genre properly tagged on novelsupdate so I can just filter them all out when searching, instead having to manually add to a special reading list to filter it out of search... more>> queries. <<less

The entire concept of chinese alternative medicine feels out of place, maybe its just my personal preference. I normally dont mind it, or even enjoy it, in novels set in an ancient fantasy setting, but in a world where modern medicine is prevalent, curing diseases with tea and essential oils just feels too surreal to me, I could maybe even buy using ki or some magical herbs as a cure in a modern fantasy setting, but dont tell me that eating oregano while hopping on one leg and farting will... more>> cure my cancer. It also didnt help that there is no plot progress, because there is no plot as far as I can tell, just a random series of events. I dont know, I just couldn't get into this novel, <<less

Again a very weak story.

A young man who knows medicine and fighting skills well.

Well? No, perfect. Even a professional can't keep up with him.

Fights for a store that means nothing. Does he make a memory of his grandfather?

Decides to help in the hospital, although before that he was not interested.

History should make empathy with the protagonist, but here he is disgusting.

Such a mess. So far we don't know anything about MC's past or his personal goals. Plot is without any direction and somewhat forced.

MC is op in every way (martial skills, medical skills, human interactions, you name it) yet his personal character is decent. Sadly the book is build on MC interacting with beauties and slowly exploring his/their sexuality.

First of all, its kinda disappointing that people leave a review while only have read ten-odd chapters. Mind your words. You can't say a novel is shitty just because you don't like it, grow up.

Then about the story : I do like it. Indeed he is a near perfect man. But what's the problem with that?

The novel is based around the beauties the MC is interacting with, but there's still a pretty good story built around it, so it's not too bothersome.

So I suggest you to read it first, then... more>> make your own thoughts about the novel.

Never rely on the written review to decide whether or not you want to read this particular novel. Try it. <<less

I honestly want to read until at least chapter 500 before I gave my review... but the story is kept getting INTERRUPTED by flirting fillers to the point it annoyed me...

The flirting stuff is wayyyy to much

I really want to know the story, but their is just TOO MUCH INTERRUPTION. Like GET TO THE F*CKING STORY.

EDIT: Most of the MC's problem rooted for females in the story, therefore we can easy summarize that this story is telling us that most the problem in this world is rooted from the female... more>> species... Is that the author trying to prove? <<less

Another novel about the wonders of Chinese TCM. The MC is a typical MC from a Chinese web novel in a modern China setting. He's very astute and cunning in terms of cooking up schemes and long term goals. He's very young (20 years old) and love mature women. He is also a very nationalistic person with strong feelings to his country, so to a certain extent, doesn't hold the greatest feelings toward other countries (although that doesn't mean he isn't able to make friends of different nationalities, unlike Zhang... more>> Ye from I'm Really a Superstar who makes an enemy out of nearly all Non-Chinese, especially the Koreans).

I appreciate this story from a medical point of view as I found myself have a little more interest in Chinese Medicine. Honestly don't know if the acupuncture techniques and some of the herbs he uses are real, nor do I know if his observation abilities to just look at a patient to understand their entire situation from health complications to some of their diet or habits are real, but I know that the diagnosis he gives sometimes are real things that can occur, which brought more interest, unlike in wuxia novels where a disease is given an exaggerated name.

Little bit more of a basic summary of the story here:

Spoiler

Similar to another today I have read (The Medical Guru), the MC has a mysterious background that isn't clearly deciphered. He has a mysterious past as he went missing for 10 years prior to the start of the story, only to return to his family's pharmacy to continue the shop that his grandfather had left for him. He isn't a push over either as he knows how to fight, using needles as hidden weapons (He later takes a martial arts master as his teacher to be more well versed in fighting to protect himself). His medical skills are godly as well right from the beginning unlike in Medical Guru, where MC has to learn step by step as he is a student. He's well versed in both western and eastern medicine, though he only ever shows TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as western medicine is looked down on by the MC. The MC can treat virtually anything as long as he is given the chance, which is where the villain's and arrogant characters come in. They impede him from succeeding in his career (his goal is to set up pharmacies in each city throughout china to spread the knowledge and acceptance towards TCM, which is dying due to popularity of Western Medicine) as they have been offended by him or is jealous of him. Causing conflict to arise only for them to lose later. Typical plot armor stuff. Essentially, the MC never takes a loss.

[collapse]

The plot gets a bit repetitive as the story goes on. Essentially, its a cycle of MC offends a character indirectly (character is jealous of MC, or MC takes attention of girl the character likes) or directly (MC is arrogant and may/may not have done physical harm to a character). Like many other such novels, it starts out with him gaining popularity in his region, then the entire city, to other cities, and then to other countries, and throughout china, etc.

One of the things I felt was missing from this story thus far was an actual rival that can compete with him. Unlike wuxia novels with constant appearances of a strong antagonist with a terrifying background, this is more like a slice of life with action with a focus on medicine and business. And with MC's dream to spread TCM, it would make sense to have a rival that could match his skills whom his would compare with from time to time right? Wrong, MC's too godly and although there are people with excellent skills, no one seems to be able to match him in the same generation, which ruins it for me somewhat.

Another thing thats missing is that, usually the MC in these types of modern China settings have a good brother or male confident that he can consider equal, that fight together in life death battles, but MC doesn't have one. Other than a few males that he keeps around as his protection and spy activities (gathering information), essentially all of his companions are women. Whats worse, is that all of them seem to end up as part of his harem in some point in the story. So again with the women, its a cycle: helps out a woman, or someone related to the woman --> woman becomes curious about him --> MC and woman flirt with each other --> Woman ends up giving in and might sleep with him.

Knowing that the MC is in a modern setting, and that he is a physician, I am somewhat appalled that he's so fickle with his relationships. The author gives the reason as him being a 'hot blooded youth' that cant resist, but thats total BS, and it really does get irritating, especially knowing that these woman are all willing to accept the fact that he has multiple woman because he is "talented and young, and its logically that he should have many women surrounding him." MC even admits he feels guilty, but he continues to pull more women towards him, contrary to his guilt.

Basic overview of Harem:

Spoiler

He especially likes mature women so everyone in his harem is older than him (youngest ranging mid 20s, oldest nearly reaching their 40s) and most of them were married women with/without kids that were divorced/widowed or had an engagement with someone prior to meeting MC. So one can imagine where the conflict comes from. Nearly everyone in the harem have significant identities and positions of power as well, allowing them to support the MC when he encounters difficulties

Some members include:

Cai Yan: started out as a normal widowed shop keeper that has a store across from MC's pharmacy. She is being treated by MC due to her unique body constitution. Later becomes a representative of his cosmetic company 'Three Flavors International, ' and a manager of his branch store in another city. Her mother-in-law is in fact a woman from higher society with many connections and assets that may assist from time to time. The mother-in-law wrote in her will that she wants everything she owns to be given to Cai Yan.

Vera: a Russian woman who is 1/4 Chinese through her mothers side. Initially came to invest in the city where MC resides. Ends up being treated by MC and in turn she invests in the region around his store to prevent it from being torn down, turning that region into a tourist attraction for Chinese culture and heritage. She invests into MC's startup cosmetic company to let it turn into a branded international company. She was engaged to another business family in Russia, but renegaded on it after discovering love for the first time with MC.

Yan Jing: nicknamed 'the Venomous Widow, " is a strong independent woman with both legal and illegal businesses and connections. She also has connections with China's upper management in government. She meets MC early on and is able to find her long lost daughter (10 years old?) with his help. She is his strong supporter that helps him set up the cosmetic company, along with resolving many of the conflicts MC gets into (Gang wars, political interests) through her connections in different regions of the country. Sleeps with MC (~chapter 400ish)

Lu Shimiao: Department head of the pediatrics department in the hospital where MC becomes TCM department head, followed by promotion to Vice president of Hospital. She was married when MC first meets her, but her husband felt disgust with her due to his misunderstanding of her relationship with his father. With the help of MC, she gains the courage to divorce her husband, and later quits her position to join MC's charity fund company as its head. She has an adopted daughter (8 years old) that is also pampered by MC. One of the first people that sleeps with MC (~chapter 200).

Shui Junzhou: Granddaughter of a military General Sire Shui. MC helped treat Sire Shui, but initially Junzhou neglected MC in favor of another doctor. Only when Sire Shui was treated did she recognize him and became curious about him. MC saves her from several incidents, and later even goes adventuring the mountains together with her which she better confirms her feelings for him. She has some sort of position in the military it seems like, but it hasnt been stated as of yet. A man whom she treats as her elder brother surnamed Qin is infatuated with her and gets immensely jealous of MC for having her heart, thus MC becomes a target. (Qin guys family has higher prestige both in politics and military than Shui family, though both families are of similar standing.)

[collapse]

What a dislike about the harem:

Spoiler

I particularly hate that he's trying to seduce his martial arts master Jiang Qinghan: she is a widowed woman with a daughter that is 16 years old, only 4 years apart from MC). She is a chief of a division of criminal police, so she is always trailing behind danger. She was widowed due a criminal organization (the main antagonist throughout the series thus far) a pharmaceutical company from Germany with strong backing from traitors in China. She encounters MC as he uncovers a underground research facility and later becomes his nominal master. Her daughter Yan Sha even has a crush on MC, so I'm like WTF, that would be a totally awkward situation. I REALLY want MC to maintain a pure relationship with his master, but already there have been scenes where she is saved by him several times and "her body heats up" due to improper thoughts that she manages to shake off.
