Ah I was really curious about this story since I actually liked san sheng san li. I'm not really sure about the whole plagiarism saga but I'm not going to go into that.

The premise of this book was really interesting, with MC trying his best to make things hard for tian shu but not really succeeding. For those curious, yes ML is ... more>>
Spoiler

MC's good friend Heng wen. Also another spoiler

MC actually fell in love at first sight with ML like thousands of years ago but due to his destiny being destined to be alone, he didn't dare to say anything. MC needs like 1000 hugs.

[collapse]

There's more to meet the eye on why MC is chosen to carry out the punishment and fate is a big thing here where a debt from a previous life can carry over and tie people together. I just want to rant on the plot here:

Spoiler

So MC accidentally got tangled up in the fate between tian shu and nan ming (hence leading MC to rise to the celestial realm due to that tied fate) hence in an attempt to save MC, tian shu actually suggested sending MC to the mortal realm, starting this whole plot, instead of the jade emperor just smiting MC. So many stuff happens and there's a fox demon who love ML and all and then towards the end of the love trial, ML kind of goes berserk?? And more stuff happens and fox saves ML, losing his own cultivation and bam MC is stuck with child version of ML and tian shu and has to take care of them for a few days in the mortal realm. That part was actually really cute where MC has a habit of sleeping with ML but as a kid, ML doesn't recognise him, so was like 'why are you getting into my bed?' then when MC finally got his own bed, ML is the one who comes and wants to sleep with MC. Anyway, so they return to heaven eventually and MC has to be punished because of all the havoc he created. He also finds out that by letting the fox demon near ML, they too have their fate tied together. MC's like, I'm really destined to be alone and at that point, I really wanted to smother MC with love. So due to MC's debt to tian shu, he gives TS his immortal core thing since tian shu's own was broken and before he could really die, he decides to give his remaining powers to the demon fox (who lost his own cultivation and was like a normal fox) and tells the fox everything about ML like how he doesn't like sweets, and tells the fox to take care of ML. MC wanted to see ML one last time before he dies but doesn't want to do so in his real form so he borrows the fox form to visit ML and in his mind tells ML how he loved him for thousands of years (CRIES!!!!) then MC leaves when ML is sleeping, escapes back to the mortal realm to die, thinking it's for the best that ML does not see him die so he won't be that sad. Just as his soul starts to scatter, he thinks he sees ML beside him and thinks that it must be illusion but it was nice to have that illusion. So ML actually realised what was happening when MC left the celestial realm, rushes over, sees MC dying and kind of loses it. Long story short, he gathers MC remaining soul and like somehow brings it back to the reincarnation cycle and MC spends decades reincarnating from small to bigger live forms and ML is always there too. Eventually becomes a human again, accidentally eats another elixir pill, ascended AGAIN, finds ML and says he owes ML and will take forever to pay him back, indicating their fate is now tied together and ML's fate to that demon fox has already been returned by MC so ML doesn't owe the demon fox anything then HE. Omg the ending bit where the angst just slowly ramps up starting from the children form bit WAS SO SAD

[collapse]

Read the spoiler only if you want to know the whole plot. I just wished there was more like maybe a bit more of ML POV or something. <<less

Ahh, I've wanted to read the translated version since I speed-watched 10 Miles Peach Blossom which was stated to have plagiarised this novel (no offence meant to 10 Miles fans). Previously, I only got to read the spoilers, which already fed my imagination, now I finally got to read this, thanks to dear translator! Thanks for the translation, they're wonderful! ;3

The ending and the last couple chapters of the story was truly very enjoyable.

Maybe I had too high expectations, but I had been wanting to read this one for awhile. Sigh.

Unfortunately, the majority of the story suffered from heavy pacing issues. New characters and side characters introduced every other chapter and then disappeared quickly thereafter; people with multiple incarnations and names, so a huge cast to keep track of.

Readers become unsure who or what were important to storyline. The main mystery wasn't well put-together and lacked tension or information to... more>> keep interest.

I could hardly feel the attachment betwen the main leads; most of their past history and interactions were told, not shown, and didn't have much romantic tension.

CN likes to heavily understate the pain/suffering/angst/feelings between main characters; I'm familiar with this and mostly enjoy that style in other stories. But this one did it too much. There was hardly any romance between the main leads, it just seemed like a very weird platonic brotherhood most of the time.

Overall took a lot of effort to get through the slow pacing towards the ending, which although enjoyable, didn't make up for the rest of the scattered story.

Great translation! Just story wasn't the greatest. <<less

I don't know about you, but Heng Wen is absolutely lovable. If you're not convinced, read till the end. Near the end is where the main CP gets together and everything plays out and I love it.

song yao x heng wen

[collapse]
And our protagonist Song Yao is so adorkable. He knows nothing but can still be talkative/knowledgeable about the matter. It's pretty cute seeing him interacting with his good friend Heng Wen who, at the surface, is there for the entertainment :). But the way Author wrote the transitioning of revealing how Heng Wen is more than just a friend to Song was just, beautiful. Rereading it, you can see the subtle feelings that is interlaced into every interaction, every unreadable/mysterious smile that Heng Wen shows. From friends who hid their feelings to actually becoming lovers at the end. I hope I conveyed my deep love for this novel.

"Under the peach blossoms, red as sunset, I drew him tighter into my arms, and told him that, in fact, I had liked for him for thousands of years. In fact, I had longed for him for thousands of years."

I must say that I was quite disappointed by this novel overall. After seeing it receive so much praise, I thought I would absolutely adore this, but I was left feeling very meh about the whole experience.

There were so many interesting ideas, and there was so much potential for... more>> a love story that could stand above so many others, yet I felt that it was squandered by poor writing choices. The plot leaves a lot to be desired. Too many things are randomly introduced, and leaves everything feeling insanely messy. I also feel like the romance could've been handled way better. So much of their relationship is told and never shown, at times it feels like they aren't even romantically in love, and instead they just have a strong friendship. One of the best things about reading or watching a romance, is being able to see two characters fall in love, and that was just absent from this novel. It doesn't help that
Spoiler

we don't even get a clear idea of who Song Yao is supposed to end up with. I thought his love interest was Tian Shu for the longest time, and I honestly really shipped it. But his true love is actually Heng Wen. I wish the author would've incorporated him into the story more in the beginning, so we wouldn't have the wrong ship in mind. And honestly, I think it would've been more interesting if Hang Wen and Song Yao were fated with the golden string instead, but that had caused a bunch of different issues with everyone, and there still has to be sad moments with a happy ending. I feel like it would make the story even more romantic and tragic.

[collapse]

Even with those grievances though, I still enjoyed things about this story, especially the last 20ish chapters. They didn't completely fix all of my irritations, but it definitely helped. I mean, I even teared up and cried a bit towards the ending, which was quite nice and overall pretty satisfying. Lastly, the main couple, while not well established all the time, were quite sweet together, and really made my heart feel warm. I hope that in the future we can receive a live action drama adaptation, if done right it could be even better than the book! <<less

I don't know why, but this story has such a meloncholic feel that it makes me tear up even when the plot isn't dogblood at all. Both MC & ML are lovable, and the love between them is so subtle yet so touching. They are not one of those lovey-dovey couples who stick to each other day & night, but their love is one of the kind, eternal "i'd die for u" sort of love, if anyone gets what I mean.😂

It's amazing that the author can stirr up so many... more>> emotions in the reader's heart with such a simple short story. Maybe it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for those are familiar with fate or Karma related plots, this novel definitely has a distinct feel to it which can be very pleasing to read. <<less

Don't judge this book by its cover. Ik it looks icky, like century-old anime style art, I also hate it with a passion. But I really loved the story.

The translation was amazing and the story was very well done. I teared up at the part the MC sacrificed himself and I almost thought it would be a sad ending but he quickly reincarnated and reunited with the ML in three quick chapters (which was a bit disappointing ngl because I would've loved to read a full sequel after that scene).

The... more>> only other negative thing was the lack of smut. There's like a weird scene that suggested it but it was very very vague. <<less

The english trans isn't complete yet so I read some MTL and understand most of the plot somehow and oh my god this is one of the most beautiful story I ever read I actually cried a bit (it's hard for me to cry so this is a hardcore angst in some way, for sure)

The romance is SO subtle like the ML probably isn't the one you think it is at first basically u somehow will discover who the ML after more than 20 chapters it's kinda k wording... more>> me lmao I can't wait to uncover how the story would be.

Actually this is a light, simple read but rich in emotions (there's no papapa scenes leme tell ya). The whole thing got more complicated than u thought it would be and it's so sad seeing how MC will act in the future cuz he deserve love so much u just want to hug him and keep him warm bc the world somehow always had its way to make him end up alone (a tiny spoiler) if weren't for ML that had to do something to change it. But actually I want extras of MC's POV like I'm curious how he actually felt when things start to become messier

Anyway I definitely recommend this ?. <<less

This is honestly one of the best novels on this site, even though I have... mixed feelings about it.

The reason I have mixed feelings can be attributed to the fact that I had to MTL the latter half of the novel since the translation didn't catch up, and it was hard to understand, especially with how it's written.

But on the other hand, it's still quite a strange story.

The story is about an immortal, who is sent down to earth to supervise a 'trial of love' for two male immortals who... more>> had an affair. He's supposed to make it hard for them to meet each other, all to test their love.

But, he has issues doing what he has to, and eventually, everything just... devolves into a huge mess.

There's actually a logical backstory to everything that happened, and... it's quite complicated.

Also, there are some things you, the reader, should know:

  • The MC is the seme/top/gong... Not that it really matters since there are no s*x scenes.
  • The ML isn't the guy he's 'kidnapping', and staging trials for.
  • The novel is a HE, though for me, the ending was a bit annoying (the reunion at the end took like 3 sentences)
  • There are no explicit scenes - the most explicit scene is a one sentence depiction of the side CP having s*x, and the second most is a kiss between the MC and the ML.
So yeah. Should you read it? Absolutely, when it's completely translated. <<less

I skimmed read this a few years back so I don't really have a fresh recollection of it other then it being a very lovely read and some small snippets. I started this because I was reading ten miles when the translator dropped it because of the (honestly very accurate) plagiarism accusations. It was so confusing at first then midway (quarter?) everything became clear but then BOOM another plot twist it was quite surprising. The way they were all entangled in this web of debts that started all because of... more>> 1 mortal man which literally messed up order in heaven was so interesting (and angsty)

I read this a few years back so I'm not that fresh on the details and I'm following the translation so it not quite there yet but I remember being a little grossed out at

Bro this novel is such a waste of time. I very much regret wasting my energy and keeping on reading 😭😭😭

The main characters are side characters the entire time, I kept on hoping it would change but it didn't. What danmei bl and all that? This is a bromance at most!! How I wish I could get my hours back!!🥹🥹

It kept on giving the illusion that it would get better, that the next page will improve the plot and characters... Non of that happened.

I didn't like a single one of... more>> the characters (except the fox and mountain cat. Absolute cuties😍), didn't like the plot, didn't like the setting... Nothing!! There this thing where mortals and or immortals in cultivation novels are rewarded for killing beasts but beasts become bad guys when they fight back. Yeah that absolutely disgusts me. They become a bunch of hypocrites in my eyes.

Chrysanthemum garden is pretty good at translation (hence the 2 stars I gave), their site is really well organized and coded, but I'll say this; most novels I've read from them have turned out to be really shitty picks so far. Instead it's Exiled Rebels Scanlations and Travis translations that have good novels, atleast for me.

Anyways this book was really not worth my efforts. Yep <<less

Although I didn't really get the feel for it in the earlier parts of the story, I really enjoyed the later parts. Especially after it became obvious who the love interest is. Especially the part where MC is agonizing and feeling deppressed over matters ... more>>
Spoiler

matters that was later revealed to just be a joke. I feels so sorry for the MC. He was agonizing over it but it wasn't originally a problem from the start. So sad.

[collapse]

The plot of the story is really good. The reveals made me feel satisfied.

I really like the protagonist. When he told the story about how someone told him that he was fated to be alone and never have a romantic relationship, it made me especially happy hehe :). I really like his quirks. Like how he gets poetic when he's feeling sad and deppressed. It made me feel like he's real and relatable even though I don't personally relate to him.

I understand why the author said that the second protagonist isn't the love interest.

I love the emotions I felt for the characters. I love how the side characters have their own distinctive characteristics that shows through their dialogues and scenes. I love how the MC solved the problem. I love the ending. <<less

I thought this novel was good, but I wanted a little more dramatic tension--it fell short of perfection, because of its brevity. To illustrate, since the MC was tasked in breaking up two heavenly Gods, I thought it would be interesting to see more of his interference in their relationship (beyond his initial role) --and an exploration of how his actions did or did not influence the two parties' feeling towards him or each other. Also, as others have mentioned, I especially wanted Nan Ming Dijun to be "punished" more... more>> than he was in the story. He really needed to be humbled and was not sympathetic whatsoever. I feel he deserved a lot worse.

Moving on, what I think is unique about this story is the idea/exploration of "karmic debt." I like the explanation given towards the end of the story. However, in addition to my complaint above, I feel there were two additional (spoilery) let downs in the final chapters:

Spoiler
  1. I wanted more insight in the ML, Heng Wen's mind.
    • When and how did he fall in love with MC?
    • Why was he frustrated with the MC, yet oblivious to how he was leading/encouraging the Demonic Fox's affections?
    • What were his thoughts on creating a karmic link to the fox and the not the MC? *An extra chapter (s) covering the ML's POV would have been a nice interlude or appendix to the story that could've answered these questions for me; AND
  2. It would have been nice seeing more on the MC and ML's relationship post-reincarnation!

Wow! This novel was one crazy ride and I loved every minute of it.

Admittedly I was pretty dense when it came to who the couple was in the first 34 chapters (might be because I read from midnight to 6am but who knows, lol) but a lovely comment above with a spoiler tag showed me the light, right when I was about to drop the novel.

I'm glad I didn't, because I loved the novel, I laughed, laughed some more, shed a tear or two, and proceeded to laugh and smile... more>> some more.

So for those of you who might want to drop the novel like I did, here is the pairing!

I was NOT prepared for the amount of tears I shed. For a story on the shorter side, it packed a punch. It also had a lot of funnier moments, don't worry. The story does have its shortcomings, but the weight of the tale seems to balance it out, I recommend.

It took some spoilers to get me to power through this novel & I’m actually a bit disappointed.

BTW this is not meant to deter you from reading the novel! I believe everyone should have the opportunity to form their own personal opinion, so please be my guest. It’s just that... it might be a waste of your time lol

The premise is interesting, the plot itself unraveled horribly. I’m not a big fan of the seme protag POV & that’s just personal preference. But usually if plot excels, then I shut... more>> my eyes on things like that. This, however, was a mess. I truly wanted to love it, but I think it was just too anti-climatic. I love the angst & I really did shed some tears for MC, but mannnnnn the background situation wasn’t doing it for me. The characters had no gravitas, it was hard to grasp details, it was just a weird blur. I liked the last 20 chapters, but the beginning was quite the steep climb <<less

I liked the novel very much, altough not as much as I thought I would because I had wanted to read it for quite some time then.

It took me some time to grasp what the story was actually about, the pacing was messy, but it eventually came together so I could make a complete picture.

The first-person-narration is also something I don't come across too often and it reminded me of Imperial Uncle which, after I checked, turned out to be written by the same author.

Heng Wen is really adorable, especially... more>> when he was teasing Song Yao in the first part of the novel.

I have very mixed feelings about this novel. On one hand I love it and yet on another I am very disappointed.

It is a sweet, touching and interesting story. I was rather absorbed into reading it, finished within 48 hours although at first I wasn't sure about it. But all that you experience on whole after reading the entire novel.

On the other hand it was confusing and slow burner. Although there were hints the main couple only emerges into ch50+ and though their interactions were enjoyable there was nothing definite... more>> between them and there were other characters that mixed into the plot... After that there were a couple few chapters, very few.. Then came the bitterness and tears. And honestly I was distressed about it.

There was a happy ending but only in the extra. The happy ending was rushed or simply wasnt satisfying. Basically they met again and stated youre mine and im yours. The end...

So in conclusion it was a distressing but enjoyable story. Would I read it again? Definitely not <<less
