The most important duty of a Taoist priest is getting rid of monsters, exorcising ghosts, and raising his temple’s reputation! Xie Lingya, though, is not a Taoist priest. He just has the Immortal Roots…

Some people can learn in a day what takes others ten years of hard work. Xie Lingya is like this–other people have to cleanse themselves and meditate to draw talismans, but he can do it as easy as drinking a glass of water. Unfortunately, in this era, graduating from a renowned university is much more valuable than the talent for cultivation. He who has the Immortal Roots finally chose to study finance.

However, the world is unpredictable. His uncle, a Taoist priest, died unexpectedly, leaving his temple to Xie Lingya. His last wish was for his nephew to find the right person to inherit his sect’s teachings.

So Xie Lingya, who had no intentions to become a Taoist, ended up as… the owner of a Taoist temple. He began to earnestly manage the deserted little place, striving to gain believers. He also struggled to recruit priests, in hope of finding a suitable successor for his uncle. After a chance encounter, his target became Shi Changxuan, who came from an influential Taoist family and had outstanding skills. Not scared off by the man’s aloof personality, he struck up a conversation and tried to get his phone number. He didn’t realize this move could be easily misunderstood…

A previous work by the author behind "Those Years I Operated a Zoo", an innovative take on Chinese-style urban fantasy. The author has really done research - seen in the first few chapters, Spirit Official Wang's finger-seal -- yes, it's a middle finger, and no, it's not flipping at people, it really does look like that.

The translator has also done some effort in translating these concepts, especially considering how some concepts don't translate well into modern viewpoints.

The character Xie Lingya reminded me of the MCs in Ghost Know What I Experienced and the Death Progress Bar. Xie Lingya mixed between the two. Shicangxuan's character is similar to the two ML's there, but he is bolder when in a relationship.

It seems like Betwixted really likes a character like this because almost all MC and ML are like that.

The plot of the story is actually 4.0 / 5.0. But I really like the characters in this level, even the last antagonist so I gave them 5.0

OH MY GOSH. Yes, I freaking fell in love with this novel!

If you are looking for a carefree, talented, and caring MC then this is the one for you. I honestly love his personality~ The ML is just as powerful and they complement each other well throughout the entire story. If you were to say how each one became powerful, then the MC is purely innate talent whereas the ML was through hardwork during his youth.

Also! If you like MC's who are on the rough side in terms of personality... more>> traits, this is it lol. He really cracks you up! The ML on the other hand is a tacturn kinda character but pretty damn pure I must say!

If you enjoyed Ghosts Know What I've Experienced, then you'll surely like this just as much!

It's worth the read everyone :D <<less

Five stars!

This is really interesting. MC personality is gold, good humor, and author definitely did their research. But I think this is kinda heavy to mtl so I'm stopping here and maybe wait for the translations.

Totally worth reading! Fantastic characters, stories and the relationships between characters are very interesting.

Most of the characters are memorable and I quite like how the MC handles things. MC and ML are pretty OP but they still need to give their efforts to combat the ghosts and spirits.

It's nice to see how MC manages the temple and promote it, the growth and everything are heartwarming!

... more>> MC and ML interactions so far are nice, I like how the author implies their feelings (mostly ML) and it's slowly growing overtime.

Can't wait for the translations, as for now I'll read the MTL and re-read this again when the translations are finished! <<less

Finished reading via mtl, it’s a good series if you enjoy the Taoism and spirit ass kicking, but even later on there is minimal fluff. The ML’s character doesn’t get developed much, and their relationship isn’t explored too deeply. The focus isn’t really on the romance, and it’s more of a side add on.

This is so amazing!

I finished it thru MTL.

Tip: Search for the raws and use Google translate instead of reading in MTL websites. The google translate version is way better.. Read the first few translated chapters from Betwixted first.

I love the plot, MC, the characters, Pokeweed and Liu Lingtong. (Also God Official Wang and Sazu). Hahhahaa
