Undoubtedly one of my most favorite novel..... if u're looking for a battle orientd novel then don't...... the MC is powerful.... so powerful that any enemies he face could be wiped out instantly (the only exception is when he was forced to fight his brainwashed npc which is in my opinion the only real "fight" in this novel)

This novel is mainly centered on kingdom building, intrigue, n stuff like that..... N although so far the ainz trampled all of his enemies there's a slight hint that there might be... more>> enemy that could oppose him (no, not his paranoia but most likely the slaine theocracy, but we'll see)

Spoiler

one thing that I like about this novel is although ainz strong and cautious even at the start, after shalltear brainwash case.... the sense that he's a special one, if any, completely vanish n he become even more cautious (to the point of paranoia) but this is exactly what I like.... cautious one may, if he still hold the notion that he's special.... then that's the one thing that will trip him on many occasion.... cautious, but didn't register in his brain that what he could do, the enemy might, or even worse do better than him will lead to death

[collapse]

The misunderstanding factor is huge here.... n in fact so thick that is sickening.... but instead of correcting it, ainz decided to push through.... dunno what this may lead to but we'll see.......

Oh! I forgot what I like the most about this novel that I should say first..... the MC is a human named suzuki satoru that transported to another world along with his game character n the remains of his guild...... many novels drop the whole human transported n become demon, monster, etc which resulted in a monster or demon with human personality.... they tend to act completely like human and completely disregard what they are now, nor are there any changes to their personality despite their new self..... in overlord ainz is an undead with a personality of suzuki satoru..... he didn't become human loving monster or peace loving idiots or "no! I'm a goody two shoes japanese human I'm kind I won't kill humans even if they did almost kill me, or r*ped my lover, or killed my family, or may retaliate in the future if let alone (many japs novel tend to visualize japanese as kindest, friendliest, etc which kinda irked me as being kind or friendly didn't depends on one's race -_- especialy if we recount on what they did on people of china and southeast asia) the MC of overlord ainz oal gown cares not on humanity as a whole, he might act to save humans, but he did so for the benefit of himself and his family (the denizens of nazarick, the remains of his guild) this is a humanlike thing to do but if killing humans would benefit him or nazarick more, he would do so without hesitation hence, not a monster with humanity, but a monster with suzuki satoru personality.... someone's personality....

Ainz's humanity slowly eroded as the story goes.... but honestly? I like it.... cuz he becomung monster actually, realisticly affect his personalities instead just becoming monster and that's it......

Spoiler

there's also foreshadowing a great war or battle that might happen in the future..... clementine's corpse missing, sister of strong (by that world standard) worker who are killed in nazarick might grow on par with their sister, some unknown grandma discussing with a dragon about the world and how it's going now, brain ungalus left with info on how the sword gazef might harm ainz and therefore a pontential to oppose ainz, a blacksmith of dwarven kingdom ran away with unknown ingot that is stronger then adamantium (though still tr*sh with ainz standard), and how ainz delibsretly spread news that he can't cast a spell that could kill hundreds of thousands of troops for another ten years (although it is a lie to cover another reasons... such info is valuable for those who want to oppose ainz.... lol) iuno if this great battle will happen or not... my bet? It will.... with all of these foreshafowing.... it will

[collapse]

All in all.... a recomended novel to those who seeks kingdom building.... well... just give it a try... <<less

MMORPG, if you've ever immerse yourself into such a game, this novel will the next adventure. Novel falls into the fantasy world, and the only twist of the story that sets it aside from all other fantasy books is, the struggle of "race" a.k.a. racism. That's right! This novel is great enough that it uses poetic conceptions, if you're too educated and need the reason to enjoy... otherwise it's still (why-are-you-exaggerating?) enjoyable. Plenty of comedy and action plots. There are barely any, if not none, useless side stories, or confusing... more>> side story that doesn't seem to correlate immediately to the main plot. The couple of side story that appears always loops to the main plot, and/or explain a bit of culture/setting.

Couple of negative reviews are how the character is portrayed as evil... well he's not. Jumping to conclusions already just because he's an undead eh...? But those who are still interested, if Evil is animal-sports-hunter, and Good is vegetarian, the main character is a meat-eater. In other words, those critics haven't seen the antagonist of the story yet... because the story hasn't yet reveal a true Evil Entity yet. This leads to many, if not to all, to ponder the twist of how the story will go.

A knight's journey ends when he/she defeats the evil dragon, but because this main character is no knight, no one knows how or where the story will end.

Having said that... watch one episode of the anime series to induce your mind to each character's voice/tone, as you read their lines. <<less

IN SHORT; Overlord is a great series which most people will really enjoy. It is a dark fantasy so the squeamish and those who want a virtuous hero to come out on top will likely be disappointed, or worse. That said, the protagonist is an interesting study on a broken, abandoned person finding an opportunity to regain what was lost while trying to cope with massive responsibility; and he has a constant struggle between a human, sympathetic personality and an amoral, pragmatic drive which is constantly suppressing his humanity? The... more>> characters surrounding him don't help his sense of being unqualified as they take his inexperienced word as gospel, but they are far from mindless drones, having eclectic personalities that allow them to be immediately memorable with potential for meaningful interactions and growth. The setting is somewhat trope-y but the series delights in subverting tropes, so it works well as the backdrop. The societies are filled with individuals who make sense within context, and their interactions with each other and the protagonist's crew are well executed and entertaining. The humor and action are excellent as well. There are some weaknesses, as explained below, but overall I highly recommend Overlord. 4.62/5 stars.

Full review: I evaluate major categories out of 100 points and try to give a fair assessment of where a light novel reader might place a score within parentheses. It's not scientific but I understand some aspects matter more for certain people, and I want to accommodate how much I think something COULD make or break the book. For this book I am assuming you aren't someone wound so tight you would do something like petition to have Harry Potter banned for depicting witchcraft as that would shift the scale for almost everything down to zero. Otherwise, the numbers in that range are my honest opinion of where most people would place it, followed by my personal response/100.

Plot: The plot is very good. There is one volume, volume 8, which interrupts a major arc with essentially side stories, but beyond that the pacing and flow are really good. The author makes good use of foreshadowing, especially in intermissions and epilogues, so nothing feels contrived at the last minute. He also manages to juggle a surprising number of characters, and many characters who played roles in past arcs show up down the line appropriate moments. There are some arcs that are stronger than others, but this will be true of virtually any story with this many volumes, and ultimately I found all of them enjoyable. Possibly the biggest area for complaint is that the story often turns dark, and focuses on essentially an anti-hero and his villainous minions. I enjoy that Momonga has an internal struggle between his uncaring undead side and his conscious mind which remembers what it is like to be an oppressed and marginalized human, but at the same time this does lead to him making morally questionable (and occasionally outright immoral) decisions. This is especially true in the first 9 volumes where he is struggling to get established and where things are fluid enough that his more villainous guardians have more liberty and influence. I really enjoy this section as he tries to get his followers to see humans as more than scum while at the same time rolling with their plans and roleplaying the villain on a few critical occasions. Once volume 10 comes around
Spoiler

he decides he doesn't want to just conquer the world, but to build a utopia for those living in his kingdom.

[collapse]
This adds a utilitarian justification, moving his decisions out of the downright evil and towards a Machiavellian model of good leadership, but the fact is he remains driven by personal benefit and lacks empathy. Some will really enjoy this perspective, while some will be put off by it. As long as you go in understanding that bad things WILL happen to some good people and that the 'hero in shining armor' is more likely to get mocked than anything else, I can almost guarantee you will enjoy the plot (80-100) 95/100

Writing style: This is somewhat difficult to judge as much of the content has been translated casually by volunteers from Chinese, and two consecutive amateur translations just won't be able to hold the integrity of the author's style. I also am not horribly picky on this. I enjoy the common prose of authors like Brandon Sanderson quite a bit, so the lack of sophisticated literary devices doesn't really bother me. At the very least I can say that the writing doesn't distract me from the story, which is too often a problem I find in light novels. Using that as a baseline (though it's not a very high one) I could give it 100, but at the end of the day I think we should at least allow for higher expectations, and if you have a PhD in English literature you're likely going to have a hard time (but you'll also struggle with most light novels, I think). (50-100) 90/100

The main character: Momonga is one of the most interesting main characters I have ever read, especially in an isekai.
Spoiler

The distant future of Earth is not a nice place, and that plays heavily on who Momonga is. Mega corporations can do just about anything they want, the environment is so polluted you need protection to just walk outside, education is expensive, and if you don't toe the line with the local corporations you will quickly find yourself dead by starvation or even more nefarious means. As such working conditions are horrific and Momonga lost both his parents under such harsh conditions early on.

[collapse]
As there was almost nothing that can be done outdoors and Momonga had literally no social network outside of work, he found himself confined to the indoors with nothing but a lot of time and money to devote to his favorite video game. There he found a sense of family and purpose, and as the game winds down he finds himself distressed that he is about to lose everything he finds personally meaningful. When, instead of disappearing with the game shutdown, his guild's home transfers to a new world and the NPCs his friends had built with him come to life, he regains the family he lost and sets out to protect his new life. He also becomes an unfeeling undead who is actively suppressed from feeling emotions. This causes him to want to protect his family and live up to their expectations at any expense. Unfortunately, the vast majority of his family were designed to be evil aligned, so their expectations are not for him to be overly nice to the weaklings they encounter. At the same time, Momonga remembers being human and doesn't want to push things too far. The internal conflict is a great device, and the desire to take care of his friend's 'children' drives him to be a strong leader and improve himself. That said, he isn't very educated and he kind of bumbles along. Some thus interpret his successes as luck and may find this an annoying trait, but this is not the only interpretation as he was literally transformed into an overlord-class avatar which has been shown to influence his conscious mind. Regardless, his internal monologues are hilarious, his strength is entertaining, he genuinely cares for his followers, he doesn't fall into a harem trope despite the fanatical females around him, and is far from a one-dimensional character. (90-100) 100/100

Supporting characters: A major draw in this series is the supporting characters. When you have an overpowered main character, it is essential that you don't let him hog the spotlight and Overlord shines by letting everyone have a moment. Focusing on the NPCs, they all display immense loyalty to their one creator who stayed with them, and many of them were programmed to be demonic creatures suitable for a villain's lair, but beyond that their personalities diverge. It isn't even the case that they are mindlessly evil and on multiple occasions their personality quirks lead them to break from the pack and display independent thought. Not only is Cocytus a guardian of Nazarick, he is also a warrior who respects a warriors spirit and requests mercy on those who display said spirit. Not only is Nigredo the best at divination magic, she is deeply concerned with children and will oppose the others for the sake of children. Aura tames animals and loves Momonga but hates bugs so much she avoids interacting with certain comrades and avoids orders which would take her to certain areas. Shalltear is fanatically loyal but when her blood frenzy takes over all bets are off. Every NPC has a unique personality underlying their shared admiration of Momonga and the fact that there is such a wide range of motivations allows their uniform loyalty to play out in different ways and leads to interesting inter-personal interactions. Indeed, many of them reflect their creators and at times their interactions lead to Momonga remember his friends, which just helps reinforce this family dynamic even when they are quarreling. A potential complaint is that some of the NPCs are exceptionally sadistic. Demiurge, in particular, could be off-putting to people with more delicate sensibilities, but there are a few others who are largely defined by their enthusiasm for suffering. For the most part, though, the acts are kept offscreen and, with only a handful of in-your-face moments spread across 13 volumes, most people shouldn't find this a major deterrent. (70-100) 99

World building: Overlord is a series that delights in breaking tropes, so the world is kind of trope-y which to me is a weakness. Also most light novels in this genre will have most of these tropes, so I can't mark Overlord down too much. The new world has various sentient races and contains countries or tribes headed by everything from goblins to dragons. They all have their tropes including a lot of standard isolationism and 'racism', which feels like a cop-out to exploring deeper relations between societies, but to be fair s*avery and eating other races are common practices lending credibility to separation. Human nations are still the most numerous and, though there is some good variety of technology and cultures (at least between the two we have seen during peace-time), three of the four we have seen at depth have politics defined largely by two or three factions with the King/Queen/Emperor trying to manipulate them with varying degrees of success. The variations in the royalty and the relatively small amount of politics may make this unnoticeable to some but world-building is important to me and when volume 12
Spoiler

introduced another monarch surrounded by petty, squabbling nobles that only differed from the Re-Estes kingdom in that the factions were geographically divided

[collapse]
it somewhat killed some of my initial hype. The history is both a strong point and a weak point. There are a lot of juicy mysteries associated with the history of the world that I genuinely enjoy, but some of them shouldn't be mysteries anymore. Momonga has someone under his thumb who lived through many of the major events, and a thirty minute conversation on the world should have revealed some major answers. Though it may have occurred offscreen, the individual has been with him for over a year, and he has met other really old beings/really knowledgeable characters, so it's frustrating this valuable line of world building hasn't been explored. The last human country is a theocracy and paints a really interesting picture of the development of religion and how it shapes the leadership and international relationships of this nation. Overall, the international and interspecies interactions make sense and the unique cultures within paint a fun and realistic (if sometimes trope-ish) setting. (50-85) 75/100

Antagonist: When you are conquering the world, everyone in the world is your enemy, and when you are overpowered, individuals who directly antagonize you don't last long, so I'll use this to discuss the characters of the world generally. The author loves to give us good backstories for the characters that encounter Momonga and friends. There are a lot of touching backstories and realistic motivations which always seem to support the character's choices. The reactions to encountering Nazarick vary as well, and part of the suspense in this story comes from wondering if your favorite characters will have the correct response. As you can imagine from a dark fantasy, not everyone has a happy ending, and an honest criticism I have is that some characters were either over developed or killed too soon. Seeing how those who do submit integrate and view their new overlord (s) is also a fun extension and helps give context to how the world is, or could be, changing for the better. As you can also imagine with such a large world, not every character is equally engrossing and you will likely find someone who is overused or too stereotypical. Also of note, the true antagonists are gradually being revealed. It is clear from intermissions and rumors that there will be a few major opponents who will form an actual resistance to our protagonist, but with one exception we have yet to see any direct conflict with a major world power. Though this kind of works as Momonga sets up his influence in the world, it has been 13 volumes. Even Robert Jordan didn't string us along this long, and I can't help but think the most recent volume, though entertaining, lacked a certain fulfillment as we should be seeing powerful international entities come into play. Looking at just this as an exposition for everyone Momonga wants to subjugate (70-90) 85/100

Humor/action/romance: I appreciate a good romance, but let me start by saying you will find very little here, and that is just fine. There are a few that are touched on, and I have largely appreciated how they were done, but if you look for books based on romance you will be disappointed. I will say that Momonga, though incapable of human passions required for romance, has a number of genuinely moving moments as a father figure. It may not be a replacement for Danielle Steel, or whatever, but there is a surprising amount of heart as the protagonist anguishes about the welfare of his followers, wanting them to enjoy life, make friends, etc. Humor is very well done, and I really appreciate both the times where it is employed and the times it is appropriately omitted. Much of the humor comes from Momonga's inner-monologues as we see a salaryman try to make sense of everything being done around him and the misunderstandings which comes from incredibly intelligent and powerful beings hanging on his every word. One of my favorite scenes is from the introduction of volume 7
Spoiler

where he is listening to a progress report on his master plan for world conquest, which is based on a single throwaway line from him, and everyone is already aware of it except him, who is quietly musing to himself if there is someone else with his name who is a genius to come up with such a plan.

[collapse]
There is also quite a bit of gag humor, especially when it is just the NPCs interacting, which contributes to the family/slice of life dynamic that helps make their relationships memorable. Another smaller source of humor is the interactions of a real world with gaming culture. Why doesn't this fish have any bones? Why is that maid's outfit stronger than high-class weapons? How come this tomb is filled with young, beautiful women? How is it possible this cute childish character is already so powerful? I really enjoyed these kinds of gags. The action is also pretty well done. Most importantly, the climaxes are well done with incredible detail. If you've seen the anime you'll be pleased that most of the major fights that felt rushed are given appropriate attention here. That said, the side fights are kind of hit-or-miss. Sometimes they have details filled in and sometimes you get the beginning and the conclusion. It never derails the book, but you sometimes are left unsatisfied in that moment. Overall, humor, romance and action are all extremely well balanced for what the author is marketing. (70-100) 95

Entertainment/overall response: This series is amazing. It is incredibly difficult to have a series be so consistently enjoyable. The only major things I feel could substantially improve is the politicking, history, and a few side characters, but the history component kind of lends to the mysteries and the politicking and side characters that bug me were not present enough to cause an overall loss of value to the series. No series is perfect, but if I can consistently enjoy myself as I have here, I can only give it 100/100.

I'll keep it brief:

The author is overly descriptive and has pretty much used the same pattern each volume. There's "development" of how far the MC's power reaches, but it's all arbitrary because it was established from the first chapter that nothing can oppose him or his guardians. I can sum up virtually every novel with "Author introduces characters, gives them long and interesting back stories, acts as if he's gonna let them survive in the world, and then kills them off or completely destroys their psyche so they'll never be... more>> heard from again other than a short note here or there. This is what MC thought was going on the whole time by the way."

It needs less description and more sustenance, but it's not a bad read. <<less

A great series and an interesting read.

Like all Isekai genre, it does have an OP MC.
Spoiler

In this case, it's not just the MC that's OP, but his entire guild that's incredibly powerful compared to the world

[collapse]
However, the author does make it interesting by presenting situations that simply can't be solved by being OP.

What I particularly enjoy about this novel is that there are many characters and many of them are explored. The author really gives the readers a chance to know and understand the characters and connect with them. They are not just there to glorify the MC. Many of them are strong, smart and capable and most importantly, interesting.

The only downside I can think of is that

the MC and his merry band have yet to face an entity or a group that rivals them in power. Sure, those 'World Class Items' pose a threat, but they've never really faced a mortal threat.

I really recommend this novel over others of the same genre because of its unique concept. Yes, unique concept. In this novel you won't find the typical summoned to otherworld for so and so reasons, become some hero or being betrayed etc., the MC is also not a typical MC who gets into cliche moments often. His personality coupled with the features of being an Undead is really cool and the way they explained the acceptance of being transported to otherworld so easily by the MC is because of the... more>> Undead's emotion scrambler! This novel also offers some intricate politics between nations, really funny moments where the MC pretends to know what was going on while cursing inside not knowing anything. Also the character development aside from MC is also pretty good. The MC is overpowerd and kinda feels lonely because he misses his pals from the Game and also the adventures spirit. He is also very loyal to his Guild and its NPCs. Even after 11 volumes, there was not a single person is revealed to be more powerful than him.

Volumes 08-09 are very entertaining but Only Volume 11 is a bit boring

Believe the hype. This series is good, there's alot of RPG and MMO elements that play out pretty well. There are dark fantasy elements and the Author does a great amount of world building. There's already an anime out and if you watched it and thought that was good. Wait til you read this novel. Ainz IS the big bad evil dude but there is a progression that leads him there. Brilliant writing, unique ideas, and a great cast of truly evil "protagonists" that are on their way to killing everyone on the planet for their boss the MC. MC doesn't really want this, but goes along with it as he loves his evil hearted children.

As the volumes have gone on, I have been dissatisfied with just how evil the MC is getting, and acts of massive slaughter of innocents he's done for no real tactical reason. It still holds the 5/5 even with that though.

I had read 14 volumes and just came back few days ago and started reading vol 15 and 16. I have to say I am incredibly disappointed. An extraordinarily good story. A nice fresh perspective on all that "OP transmigration" tropes, when the protagonist plays the role of a villain, but he is not evil just for the sake of being evil. Rather, circumstances are such that there's little room to maneuver because he's already an ultimate undead feared or hated by default by all living (well, a few semi-mad ancient wizards/necromancers don't count) from the start, with a bunch of monstrous "NPCs" who are willing to serve him.

But, by itself, it's not reason enough for it... more>> to be among top-ranking stories, whats truly good is how the story is written. There's barely ever a cringy OP moment, most of the time the author has their way with words fine enough to make it an enjoyable, entertaining story. <<less

it could be a little more enjoyable.

Overlord has made me look for signs of characters that simply don't matter in the grand scheme of things in a story (like in Kumo Desu and others which adopt this strategy), and resent reading pages and pages of the author describing the characters' gear, their (to the knowledge of normal humans and peers) great powers, their sad sob story, their ambitions, only for one of the Real Characters arrive to point at them and the character we spend chapters and chapters wasting time and reading just becomes dust. The scenes are very descriptive and the jokes regarding Ainz always make me laugh. It can give a light-hearted tone even when the novel is dark. It gives a refreshing point of view of the "villain" and does it well. The translations have also been superb. A few regrets on the story would probably fall on Momonga's lack of character development when he is the main character and the "intellect" of his top advisors being overshadowed by his mistakes due to his high luck (although I think of this as more of a joke than anything). <<less

5 STARS

Very good novel. Well written to make what would otherwise be a boring plot interesting. Starting in another world as an Overpowered skeleton with servants who worship the ground you walk and do as you say? Sounds like it could get old fast, but it does not. The way the characters are written, the dialogue, the enemies, plot points, and epic battles are all continuously great. It feels like the story could go any of a dozen directions and would always be strangely captivating. The Main character can be... more>> absent for an entire novel, and the support characters carry it just fine, great actually. It's too bad the author has gotten tired of the series. Shame, really. Hope he finishes it! <<less

Simply the best. Sick and tired of disgusting goodytwoshoes annoying as hell MCs. Overlord is a much needed change from the norm of not just stories in its genre (isekai etc) but all stories in general. I love Nazerick and how their actions affect the world around them. For some reason writers don't make stories like this (following villains or at least MCs that are not straight up heroes) and even when they do, it's rarely as good as this. Simply put, Overlord is great and one of my favourite... more>> fictional stories in general (top 5 in fact). Totally worth the read <<less

Overlord, even though it fall's inside isekai genre, it is still one of a kind with only downside that you get introduced to many character so that in the end they will end up as a pawn or die, #sorry-for-the-spoiler.

its something you will definitely enjoy, but if you are weak hearten then its not for. For action, adventure, fantasy etc and there is so many things. Even though the Overlord series doesn't happen in the game of Yggdrasil, you still get to explore the game and understand it.

P.S: The story... more>> take place in a completely different world, not in a game world with a few game mechanic's. <<less

One of the best novel I have read. I usually like overpowered character, but generally the novels which have overpowered characters don't have a good story or character development. But this novel excels in everything. My favorite till now.

If I were to describe this to my friend's I'd say it's like a Japanese version of Game of thrones but only with a bias towards the MC Ainz. Although with a bias for Aninz, so you could put money on him surviving and prospering.

That said, this stories reputation may strike some as a little overblown initially, due to the MC's fundamental, banal- ofice worker personality. But the true measure of the scheming and backstory of is deceptive only gradually emerging from hidden deaths to make a brief appearance every... more>> now and them.

Meanwhile this story will likely be able to gradually ensnare you in it's thrall with it's vivid, if flawed side charachters through wholes eye's we see the diversity, cultural clashes, strife and both aweinspiering and very much horrifying emergence of Ainz Ooual Gown. <<less
