Amane Fujimiya’s neighbour in the apartment he lives in is the school’s number one lovable angel: Excellent and with a level of beauty that can only be described as angelic – Mahiru Shiina. Amane, an ordinary student who doesn’t stand out, is her neighbour, but until now, they didn’t interact with each other. After meeting the soggy angel in the rain:

“I’m returning what I borrowed. By the way, clean up your room. It’s filthy.”

“None of your business.”

A relationship with a sharp-tongued angel begins, starting with handing over an umbrella. From catching a cold and having someone take care of you, to making a meal for someone because they neglected their health, to joint work (cleaning rooms)…

Get your insulin shots ready because you're gonna die from extreme diabetes after reading this novel. This novel really tugs at your heartstrings and leaves a warm feeling in your chest when reading it. Its free from the useless arguments, quarrels and misunderstanding that others of the same genre has, instead it just focuses on the slow and steady development of our two main characters. Its one of those few novels that could make your heart go doki doki and ache all at the same time.

The story is just about... more>> a gloomy boy and an angelic girl, and their daily interactions with each other. Their relationship gets closer and closer with each passing chapter. And you as a reader just can't help but grin from ear to ear as their feelings for each other slowly develops from being friends to something more.

Our two main characters have quite the contradicting personalities which leads to some interesting interactions and conversations. Both of them are fleshed out, likeable and just plain cute and fluffy. Each one of them has their own flaws and problems which they try to improve as the story progresses. Their daily interactions with each other are wholesome as f*ck and there are some moments that leaves you foaming at the mouth from the cuteness overload.

There are not many side characters in this novel and that's not really a problem. Each one of the small cast of side characters are memorable, lovable and just mesh well with our main characters.

The translation is barely passable. There are some spelling errors here and there, occasional hard to read sentences, misuse of pronouns and an overuse of the word "wry". Even though there are some problems with the translation, it doesn't really take away the experience from reading the novel.

Highly recommend for everyone to read. It's a heartwarming slice of life light novel that just leaves you wanting for more. Its warm like drinking hot cocoa on a cold night and as wholesome as a pack of Quaker's oatmeal. Its a diamond in a rough that everyone should give a try. <<less

Might as well make the title: "The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten but I'm to self deprecating to progress any further" a long LN title wooho~!

Hey you know whats a good idea lets make them live like newly weds as they would only f*ckin confess at the final chapters with some utter bullsh*t drama, we can compensate for the after wedding chapters wooho or better yet even after they confess milk the series for all its worth and make it a rinse and repeat~

I was like: Finally this guy... more>> can pick up ques and notice things...
FEW VOLUMES LATER
she is okay with indirect kiss, hugging, lap pillow etc etc and only with you she says
the guy: I don't know what this means at all haha *insert another self deprecation*
me: oh no, not this f*cking sh*t again

At this point it was blatant to me that the Author just didnt want the relationship to progress but to sell more chapters instead, sure its wholesome but my god did the guy become so annoying so friggin fast I would have rated this 5 stars if the guy had continued in the same pace he did but this is like he is at the tip of the arc and refuses to budge from there when all he needs is a push f*cking punch to his face the reason he comes up with is just... *sigh*

Right I'll stop there its worth reading except for the whiny ass MC, my problem is with the "self deprecation" and not with the "progress in romance" but this annoying thing popping up again and again, it would take guts to confess I know but this self deprecation bullsh*t to add more chapters is killing this series <<less

I’ve read to chapter 8 so far. Each chapter is pretty long (for this site), but time flies so fast while you’re enjoying them that you’ll hardly notice.

The novel is great. It’s written and plotted well despite being a slice of life. It clearly has an underlying romance brewing between the two leads, Amane and Mahiru, their interactions with each other never fail to elevate my heart—both are quite blunt characters but each have a distinct personality. In fact, every person with a name in this novel is a fully... more>> fleshed-out character.

There hasn’t been any annoying developments that haunt romance novels, like misunderstandings or quarrels of idiocy. This novel splashes in some cliches, however, but my, what a mighty fine swimmer it is.

A point of contest is the unrealistic nature of a girl that seemed to have no interest in him beginning to slowly help take care of him. It’s interesting and fun to read, but unrealistic.

This is the epitome of a slice of life between a guy and a girl as they slowly draw closer to one another, nothing more, nothing less. Though, you’re always cheering the two on.

Read it, you’ll likely enjoy it.

P.s It has the comedy tag but although I’ve thought of some parts as funny, I haven’t laughed. <<less

A really sweet story with very sweet characters. They slowly grow close to each other and develop feelings and it's super wholesome and cute.

BUT I just have to mention this since no one else seems to. The protagonist has a serious case of the low self-esteem syndrome. The girl can give him 50 hints that she's in love with him but he will write it all off as "oh, she means I'm reliable or I'm a safe boy she can be herself around without worry. It's impossible that she meant... more>> it in a romantic way with someone useless like me." Heck, there's also the cliché trope of the friend telling him to have more confidence and look at the girl more but he just gets super annoyed hearing stuff like that.

It's beyond infuriating to me honestly and if these tropes annoy you, stay away from this series. But if you find this cute, by all means, give this story a try. It's definitely all the things the other reviews make it out to be. I just wanted to mention the negative aspects no one seems to talk about. <<less

Contradictory as it may be, despite me liking this novel, I can't wholeheartedly recommend it

The setup of Angel Next Door is pure and simple: she was a girl, he was a boy, cannot make it any more obvious. What you'll see is the standard romance progression where the girl clearly liked the boy, the boy is too dense, and their friends get exasperated about it. Sure, just because it's standard doesn't mean it's not good, but it does mean there's not much that can be said about it.

The problem with... more>> sugary sweet romance novels is that, for some reason, post relationship is an incredibly hard thing to write. Once relationship gets established, tension simply disappears and things get dry real fast, despite the fact that the couple kept doing the sweet thing that got you hooked in the first place. For 3 entire volumes Amane and Mahiru do sweet things together, and then it goes downhill

This is not a problem that only Angel Next Door experiences, OmiaiShitanode also suffered from the same problem, although that one swung way too hard in the other direction. This is not to say that the series as a whole is bad, but there's a peak where the series clearly is great, only to go downhill and it's really not your fault if you suddenly find yourself thinking "Hmmm this isn't as enjoyable as previous volumes"

For Angel Next Door the peak is, sadly enough, volume 3. Author claimed that volume 4 is where the hero "gets proactive". No spoilers but the volume is pretty disappointing. The one amusing part of the later volumes is the fact that Mahiru grows younger every year: she starts out a 16 year old, by volume 5 she's basically 12

But enough of doom and gloom! If Volume 4 sucks, what about volume 1-3?
Well, dear reader I'm glad you asked because volume 1-3 are incredible. Like I said it's very basic, but it's really sweet and in a good way. There's always something new in their relationship and the standard "oh come the hell on why aren't you guys dating yet?" interactions are limited. Angel Next Door inspired a helluva lot of other romance slice of life novels and you can see why: the setup really works

Although, basic and wish fulfilling that it is, you may not find it that enjoyable. That's fine, I also don't think this is a literary masterpiece, but if you find yourself liking volume 1, do grab 2 and 3, it'd be worth it <<less

It starts off really great, but as the series goes on, you can clearly see the author is just dragging stuff with the repetitive MC's no-longer-realistic self-deprecating problem to the point that you can skip a few chapter and you won't miss anything at all.

Most of the latter half of the story was just like:

Spoiler

FMC: *dropping hints as obvious as joe mama's ass that she truly loves MC*

Dumb MC: "ah, it must've been my imagination. There's no way that she likes a guy like me"

A common complain is that it gets boring and repetitive after the ... more>>
Spoiler

confession

[collapse]

but this is exactly what I was looking for and isn't very common in LN/Manga/Anime, a romcom that doesn't end after the couple gets together. Objectively, it's still interesting after the trip to amane's hometown and does get repetitive after that, so you can either continue reading each time new volume comes out for your dose of sugar or drop it.

Another complain is that Mahiru lost her personality and became boring after the
Spoiler

confession and just became an obedient gf/housewife

[collapse]

but I don't think so, she still takes a lot of initiative in their relationship during her stayover, comforting MC when he was pouting about the maid cafe, etc. If only we had Mahiru's viewpoint, her interaction with Chitose, MC's mom, I bet she wouldn't come off as plain after a certain point. I do think it is a shame that they just brushed off a potential plot point though
Spoiler

about Mahiru's dad

[collapse]

It's like the author remembered, oh there's still this plot point, we can't just forget about it but actually I don't really want to write about it in this story either so let's just remove it with as little conflict possible.

I also find it a shame they don't put more focus on the side couple, which are very interesting characters with a bit more colorful and th**ny relationship, but I think the author wants this story to only be about Amane and Mahiru. All in all, a great read for what it is, all I wish at this point is a volume of short stories of them after marriage, then it would be perfect. <<less

A very wholesome romance with great artworks. Seeing the two main characters get along better throughout the story is a really soothing experience that I think only visual novels usually achieve

When I started reading it I was very weak emotionally. I needed something to comfort me. It might sound weird but the interaction between the protagonist and the heroine really does the trick for me. I have read many wholesome story but none have moved me as it does (altho I was in a better emotional sate while reading them😅). Anyways I'm grateful to the creator and the translators for such a sweet and adorable story🙇‍♂️.

After they started going out, the cultural festival and even when they go to the boy's hometown, all is just a repetition of what has happened before they were even dating. A very good romcom for the first half, but it seems the author doesn't want to end it and because of this the story keeps dragging on and has become stale at this point. Even if they happen to get development later on, I now don't have the interest and patience to continue reading it. It would be better... more>> if you imagine this story completed after some chapters they started dating and drop it then. Good writing for the first half and the translation is great. This will be review for both WN and LN.

To explain briefly: this story is about fluffy romance between two main characters Amane and Mahiru. No harem and no other BS, only pure romance. If you're tired of reading harem novels or if you're looking for one-on-one pure relationship, this novel is for you.

The light hearted comedy and fluffy moments are nice; the back stories of Mahiru and Amane are really touching and quite believable and so is their reason for falling with each other. Their relationship is definitely diabetes inducing.... more>> However the story suffers from a major drawback: repetition.

The story takes an extreme nose-dive after the confession and the two characters practically do nothing but repeat their earlier lifestyle and actions. They soon realize after becoming a couple that they were already doing couple like things even before dating each other. Sadly, even when the characters realize this themselves, it is the author that doesn't understand this and repeats the same sort of actions and the story then heads towards nothing but fluffy action and no plot or development of any sort.

To quote another reviewer, this is basically rinse and repeat of pre-defined and over used sequence of actions between the two characters. Mahiru pouts and Amane tries to lift her mood. And then some fluffy action happens. Rinse. Repeat. <<less

It is a very heartwarming story that will captivate you with its fluffiness and warmness. Their interactions may give you diabetes but you will find yourself looking forward to how their relationship will progress.

I recommend that you read this because it is a novel that you will really like if you are into a great romance.

It went downwards after volume 3. Just drop it there and assume happy ending.

MC is dense af and There's a lot lot lot lot of repetition after volume 3, vol 4 looks like the author just ctrl c ctrl v 'd the first 3 volumes.

Overall if you can bear with the slow pacing, first 3 volumes are worth reading.

If you've read the other reviews, you already know that the story is very warm and fluffy, and it'll definitely end up making you smile like an idiot while reading. However, you'll also know that it's not without flaws, and seeing barely any romantic development between the FMC and MC is frustrating, but think about this. Would you rather have some cringe, exaggerated, or overly heavy drama bringing the characters to feel uneasy around each other for 3 chapters instead? This novel was written as a fluffy, cute romcom story... more>> made to put a smile on your face. The author wanted to avoid adding dark/deep drama that would ruin the lighthearted atmosphere of the book. Maybe this is biased coming from me, someone who thoroughly enjoys reading cute romcom stories, but you get the point. Plus, I also get that Amane being self-deprecating was annoying, but it wasn't a deal-breaker for me. Face it, there's no story that is perfect. If you're put off by a detail like that, then don't touch the book. That's on you.

Summary: The book is very cute and fluffy, but there is barely any romantic development between the main characters for a long time, and the MC is self-deprecating. If absolutely hate reading about two characters having cute interactions and can't bear the MC denying FMC's feelings by being self-deprecating, that's on you. If you like slice of life romcoms, especially those without drama, and you have a bit more patience for our self-deprecating MC, check this out. <<less

Be warned reading this make ur sugar intake increased. It is light adorable story. Pure vanilla. Few characters in here but their interaction won't make you bored. It just that MC is so dense but still can be explained probably with something to do with his past. If you tired of reading heavy story such as Wuxia or Xuanhuan novel, reading this once a while is nice.

Works as a naive, low key romance novel. Besides the smartphones, the characters feel like they've been plucked from the Showa Era. They are innocent, watch TV together, and don't really have much to do with the internet or social media.

While reading it, I thought that it went a bit slow to linger on the fluff, which I suppose works for some people. I prefer a few more events over 3 volumes. Also, I kept on thinking, don't try this at home kids.

Spoiler
  1. Friends first doesn't have a great track record IRL in terms of romance.
  2. In vol 2, Shiina talks about kicking a man in the groin. Kicking a guy in the groin may not stop a guy if he has adrenaline running through his system. One guy told me that while he was in a fight with another man, one of his opponent's friends kicked him in the goonies. He doesn't remember what happened immediately afterwards. His friends had to pull him back & he later learned the person who kicked him still didn't look quite right even after three rounds of reconstructive surgery on her face.
