This is one of my favorite read but the racism against japan and how they were portraid really disgusts me. There's also the misogynistic idea that women's can only be happy with a man. The nationalism also gets annoying. Its not even set on earth why does China keep hetting mentioned.

The way the outworlders were treated in this is really fucced up. They were made the villain because of there looks and were froced to suffer. The MC also deeply hates them to the point he killed them all just... more>> because he reminds him of japan. Its really fuccing bad and downright disgusting. But I still read all of it because it has some funny moments as well as moments were I cried.

Overall, if u can ignore all the bad points (i just skipped the chapters where is see the racism) then its actually a good read.

Additional rant, I dont think this guy (MC) even lived during the era when japan was doing all those terrible stuff. But this guys hatred towards them is really extreme its as if he was there when it happend. Its understandable to condemn those who actually commited those crimes back then. But why does he have to take it out on the innocent ones, even going as far as to massacre an abused race of people from a different world that has nothing to do with japan nor look japanese just because they remind him of japan. You can easily tell during the final war that those outworlders arent inherently bad theyre only trying to invade because they were sealed in a place where there are very little resources. The MC had the power to change their circumstances and avoid further bloodshed but he really went ahead to massacre every single one of them. How does that make him any different to the japanese soldiers who did all thos deplorable stuff back then. To think he even had the gall to condemn and hate because of the massacres done to China back thenconly to do the same in an even more extreme manner, completely making them extinct because he doesnt like how they look. This guy is a rwal fuccing hypocrite if it wearnt for the fact all this stuff only cam to light in the last chapters and im already fully invested in finishing the story. I wouldve dropped this thing long ago. <<less

Just finish this series. My favorite part is probably the first 1/4 of the book, it remains engaging and entertaining throughout but the last quarter introduces a lot of new characters I didn't care about and most of the characters from the previous 3/4 of the novel is never used again.

The novel is very poetic and there were some very emotional and touching scenes that can get people misty eyed. There are also some very comedic moment and funny characters here, the author makes swearing into almost an art form... more>> at place and is great at creating awkward and absurd scenario that can make me literally laugh out loud.

The main character often use underhanded and deceitful tactic to successfully outsmart his opponent rather than overpower them since he is almost always fighting against opponent way more powerful than himself.
Spoiler

The ending feels a bit rushed and could probably be better off with an couple of more chapters expanding the epilogue. But overall an enjoyable read and something I recommend.

[collapse]

A previous reviewer mention that there is racism in this novel, yes it exist and is incredibly s*upid and comically trivial, it leaves me exasperated but is also easily ignored by the reader:
Spoiler

The Racism is so disappointing because it is basically a throw away line that seems like nothing more than a joke but is unfortunately unavoidable as it is integral to the plot and Jun Mo Xie's character.

Note that there is major spoiler ahead:

There is only 1 conversation where it is brought up in any relevant way. Mei Xue Yan, one of Jun Mo Xie's future wife explains the reason why she is letting some of her enemies live even if she had to get hurt herself.

MXY: These people will be critical for the success of a major upcoming battle.

JMX: Who gives a crap? They hurt you so kill them, f*ck this future battle.

MXY: But this is a battle against monsters! The safety of all the people of this continent is at stake. The enemy are evil and powerful demons that can disappear from site, camouflage themselves into trees and rocks and move like one with the shadow!

JMX: Still not seeing why this is your problem.

MXY: They are all in*estuous brothers and sisters Siamese twins that live for thousands of years.

JMX: Eh, that's kinda sick but still not your problem... wait a minute those fighting skills sound very familiar, what language to these speak?

MXY: They have some weird language that no one understand, their battlecry is fierce and disgusting... something like... ba... baka...

JMX:... Bakayaro?

MXY: Yes that's it!

JMX:... !#!@@# Its the dam Japs! Ok I'm in, we gonna kill them all!!!

MXY... what?

And that's basically it! The fact that these evil in*est Siamese Twin monster speaks Japanese is pretty much never mentioned again. However it is also inherently unavoidable because Jun Mo Xie's first reason to fight these monster was that they speak Japanese, he as a character is racist and sees no issue with this.

One of his wife is literally a thousand year old bird monster that managed to transform into a human and he has no problem with this at all and even went to great length to protect her dignity but when it comes to the evil monster that speak Japanese, then they must DIE DIE DIE!

The novel never pick up on this again, always referring to these monster thereafter as the Yi tribe people and they are basically a footnote at the end of the novel that got annihilated by Jun Mo Xie in less than a sentence.

I don't know how this has such a high rating. Its very generic with barely average writing that tends to be extremely repetitive even by Chinese web novelist standards. Just try reading chapter 38 without wanting to kill the author for wasting your time. If you can do it, then you don't value your time at all.

If you do decide to read it, read it in large chunks and skim. Even if this is your first Xianxia, there's no point in actually reading all the words. Most of them only... more>> exist to fill the character quota. <<less

It started very well. Although in the first 300 chapters the MC wasn't particularly strong, the story was hilarious, the characters were entertaining, and all was proceeding smoothly.

However 3 things were steadily highlighted, and turned a five star novel into a two star one (-1 star per issue).

Racism, heavy misogyny, and severe disgust toward conjoined twins.

I won't go into details, but anyone who read this to the 900th chapter knows that the author's hatred for Japanese people is quite deep. You also know that although he has nothing against women,... more>> he firmly believes that the only way for them to find happiness is to stand with their head lowered behind their husband (and to give birth to children). Lastly, him representing Japanese people as vicious amoral rapists, and conjoined twins (+many comments I will avoid) tells a lot on his view regarding both the former and the later.

Yet, if despite all the aforementioned he managed to display brilliant writing and well crafted plot, it wouldn't be that bad. Alas, the MC is as hypocritical as those he scolds, and does the same things why he criticizes, and insult them. Then, his excuse is "I never said that I am a good person."

He is subpar tr*sh that deserves to be damned for all the wanton contradictions, and hypocrisy he made me shallow.

Moreover, the novel loses all form of organization. The power boosts become random with some bs as justification. We see a lot of repetitiveness, the humour loses all appeal... etc

In the end, with all the negative points, I wish I could give this novel a -5 rating, or at least a 0 because it is just tr*sh, and wasted a tremendous part of my time. I would only recommend it to my worst ennemies. <<less

Another novel that you can tell that the author is a shut-in with little experience in real life situations and with absolutely no knowledge of the opposite gender.

The more you read the more it becomes apparent that the so called author has no idea how to write and the jokes that made the novel somewhat interesting to read are nowhere to be found.

For example the main character spends 260 chapters hiding his true abilities even from his family only to show them in an extravagant fashion to 3 girls 2... more>> of those may be his enemies. <<less

This novel had so much going for it.

It starts off quite well, but around chapter 250 the author just loses it.
Spoiler

1. Worst - Classic tropes about pride for the sake of pride cause everyone to act. Character plot holes galore
Even worst - Example - an MC able to detect all poisons is (as usual) somehow given an aphrodisiac in which he can't restrain himself from ravaging a woman who likes him... Can these authors be any less original?

2. He is able to deal with every complicated situation with ease except in regards to 16-22 yr old women?? His real age is 40+ But, these women come and constantly tell him what to do halfway in the story, and he is "hopeless"... yet he manages to kill hundreds of the most powerful men in ease. - *get real*

3. The characters throw away their original personalities and start doing things for the sake of the plot.
Example - Character is the peak assassin from another world, cold and ruthless, and doesn't do anything unless it's for profit. Yet, by 200c he is taking on enemies that could destroy him, family, and friends for the sake of pride/woman without logical reason.
Not only does this destroy the characters original personality, but is just dumb. *sigh* classic Xuanhuan bs

Disappointing to say the least. There are many good things about this novel; it had a good and strong start like most Xuanhuan/Xianxia novels, it has great and hot blooded fight scenes that draw you in, it has very well done comedy scattered across the novel (fairly frequent toilet humor included), I wouldn't say the characters are well developed, but they are consistent in terms of keeping to their objective and main principles. Even the members of the harem had their fair share of air time and interaction so I... more>> wouldn't consider it completely shallow.

The reason I rated this 2 stars at best?

The first and most minor reason: wildly inconsistent power levels. Granted, this is unavoidable if you want to feel the hot blooded fight scenes, so this depends entirely on the reader's suspension of disbelief. For example, the author goes to very great lengths to expound on why the power structure is so rigid, why one level difference can make a f*ck ton of difference; like a gold can casually brute force a fight, while the silver will have to spend most of his energy to even pierce a gold level fighter's natural skin. This is used to put the MC's focus on pure skill and training into focus and his advantage therein. The problem? MC isn't even silver, yet his fingers can tear off throats and pierce chests; the reason given is that this are the human's natural weak points because no one else was smart enough to test this kinda sh*t in life threatening situations amirite?

The second reason: MC's wildly inconsistent Emotional quotient. First chapter alone expounds and bootlicks the MC's assassination skills to the high heavens. Praises his understanding, and sheer ability to manipulate human nature to his every whim as if everyone else besides him are nothing but dolls in the face of his domineering ability. this is raised, ass kissed, worshipped in the whole book and it never stops. With one exception. Whenever he has to deal with a girl, the MC instantly turns in a dumb as f*ck brute due to his "lack of experience" with 50% of the human race. Now... this might seem a bit abstract, but don't you think that maybe he would have needed to... y'know communicate with a woman somewhere down the line of his "job" as the KING OF ASSASSINS? Were ALL his targets nothing but men? Were all his targets surrounded by nothing but men? Because I'm pretty sure an assassin would have had to know and understand the people around his target to set up an assassination. This gets even worse around the middle chapters when he has to manipulate and fight actual women, and he has zero to no issues whatsoever manipulating them into his kill zone, and yet the author insists on turning the MC into a steaming pile of sh*t every time one of his harem members start crying.

Third reason: Hypocritical as f*ck MC. Consistently described as ruthless, logical, apathetic. You know, the usual macho Wuxia MC cliche. Only his principles mattered as an assassin, an even if he had to walk to death beacuse of them, he would do it with NO RAGRETS! In actual story? I lost count of the number of times he happily betrays his stated principles. For example: one very early and lengthy ass kissing session from the author describes him as a secretly righteous assassin, kills off s*ave traders and then forces s*ave traders'enemy to pay up even though they don't even know him or asked him to do anything. In story > ruthlessly abandons orphans and s*aves he saves from a s*ave trade house. making sure the say every few sentences that he would have happily stood aside and let them do their sh*t if it wasn't because of pure coincidence. Even after saving them, and seeing that they have no "talent" and are worse than wastes because of their crippled limbs, still advises his uncle to just end their misery and kill them off because they have no money to support the orphans they saved.

This is just one of MANY MANY hypocritical things he does. Talks a sh*t ton of things about how he's a great. efficient assassin. One silent strike and no one in the world stand up to him.

In actual fight? At least half the chapter is taken up by his boasting before an entirely shounen style fight takes place. Reallly.... really hypocritical. <<less

Reviewed up to chapter 93:

Novel is exceptional in actually introducing characters to the reader but that does mean more details to read and slower paced actions then some people might like (if you want a quick paced novels with just random characters being introduced, possibly killed off just as fast, with no substance, but an unrealistic OP protagonist with trouble explaining how they beat others higher rank than themselves... then isn’t for you). You get a vivid plot with politics, actions, and drama with characters who's action are based off... more>> reasonable emotions, a working brain, and individual history. The thing people might like about the novel is that the action and interactions are reasonable/logical due to the detailed characters with their own humanly flaws, that you can somewhat relate to if you were put into their situation (could be a dislike for some people who just wants an MC with OP plot armor that mu*ders everything in their way).

p.s. due to detailed character development, this novel is extremely slow in relationship/harem building department, but hey... first possible catch is a Tsundere. (with other novels you would question how did this supposedly beautiful and unobtainable female not get duped into marriage with a dozen kids yet, with how easy/fast they fall in love) <<less

Short version: Not as cringe worthy as a lot of Wuxia. Decent beginning and tolerable until ch. 728 personally. But eventually extremely cringe worthy. I suspect has to do with author trying to stretch story out thousands of chapters with a lot of filler. Formula: MC steps on ant, ant farm comes to kill MC, MC and ant farm posture and pull their d*cks out and keep measuring each others instead of fighting for 20+ chapter then actually fight.

Long version: A lot of these Chinese LNs really are getting on... more>> my nerves. I have an unusually high tolerance for bad writing and story telling because I love fantasy elements. I picked up this novel coming from dropping ancient strengthening technique because I was getting annoyed at how every woman was "world shaking" and "earth shattering", barf. I still read close to a thousand chapters on that novel.

So I kept reading this because hey I'm not barfing while reading it, until chapter 728. I am seriously considering dropping this LN as well. Way too much posturing, and every character is a hypocrite, and will kill a whole family for someone stepping on an ant inside their homes... This novel is supposed to be about being an awesome assassin but what you end up with is 10% action, and 90% arguing like little children despite everyone being supposedly really old and wise. They all act like little children, including MC.

Spoiler

In chapter 728, MC confronts almost dying 100 experts from 3 holy lands by talking to them to death... Seizing heavens this, heavens that, Mei admonishing MC for being ruthless after 500 experts came to kill Mei, MC, and their family. Way too much you didn't give me face blah bullshit. This chapter was supposed to be the resolution to this arc, but the arc as extended by 100 experts and MC talking about bullshit. And Mei being brainless like she always is. Has this author ever interacted with real people?

[collapse]

The only big plus side to this novel: at least it is 10x better than Ancient Strengthening technique. But still only 2/5 star quality. Shows how bad AST is. And based on how many chapters I read for both novels despite being super cringy shows how high my tolerance is for bad. <<less

Around chapter 370-380 MC gets drugged by his own most trusted person with an aphrodisiac and the whole scene was depicted as it was supposed to be funny, now let me tell you it was such potent that the MC almost died. I can understand his coward of a family does NOTHING was it supposed to be a funny r*pe ? MY BAD it's just disgusting.
Let me leave this quote here while everyone outside the tent is laughing "Moreover, Qing Han... that poor girl! She couldn't have done anything to resist Jun Mo Xie if he had forced her after having lost his mind. But, she didn't even call for help. What does that mean? She must have understood that something was wrong with JMX. In fact, she might've realized an aphrodisiac was at play. So, she must've wanted to save JMX. That may be reason why she has endured everything in silence... I don't know what those excessive toxins would've done to JMX's body if it weren't for QH's sacrifice. This means that QH has sacrificed her virtue to save JMX [...]"
But again, MC as a f*cking "king of assassin" ? Normal one would have never tolerated such betrayal and logic would most likely made him cut ties at most if he couldn't bear to hurt the girl but I guess NO it's like nothing happened. Ruthless protagonist my ass. Evil monarch my ass. He's such a coward that he just feel embarrassed and comply like an obedient dog when his uncle scold him as a beast while threatening to break his legs. God I had never read about such a pathetic king of assassin. Later in the chapter he admitted he was glad a girl would drug him to get him, more like king of loser honestly.

[collapse]

TL;DR : Worst king of assassin I had EVER read of. You can read the beginning but honestly drop around chapters 380 it's just a "funny r*pe" story. disgusting imo <<less

The MC keeps doing s*upid things. His family is in danger from enemies, so he should be keeping a low profile. But he keeps insulting and offending people, making even more enemies.
The author keeps writing "Hitman Jun", maybe to remind us that the MC was an assassin in his previous life. Wouldn't a professional assassin be very good at keeping a low profile and not attracting attention.

it started out really well, but its all gone downhill after 200th chapter or something and has the reached the level of utter rubbish recently. According to the author women can't succeed in life without depending on their husband, there is one scene where the MC thinks to himself "even though she is really strong she is still a women in the end". Has the author even seen the world outside his fictional one.

Then we come to the part where the author is racist as hell and that to at... more>> a point where he is depicting Japanese people as gruesome rapist monsters who are born as conjugal twins, are savages and shout "bakayaro" while fighting. And are so disgusting that the whole continent comes together to kill them. I mean man that is fu**ed up, even reading it makes me feel sick, and I am not even Japanese.

even ignoring all that stuff, the MC is tr*sh and story is all over the place. The side characters have no personality and also no reason for existence. All they do whole day long is to look at the MC with worshiping eyes. At one point of time author even stops telling the cultivation level of the characters. I mean seriously for the last 100 chapters I am reading sh*t like, he has surpassed this level but the second guy surpassed the previous one and both of them are like ants in front of the third guy etc. -_- I mean why would you write a cultivation novel and not mentioning the CULTIVATION LEVELS!!!!

I can still write pages about the things wrong with this novel but I am getting lazy now so I will jump to conclusion

the only good thing I can say about this novel is that there is some decent amount of comedy but that is it. You can give it a try if you want as the first 200 chapters are not too bad. <<less

Pro

    • MC, who bullies others more, instead of getting bullied by others.
    • MC pretends to be an arrogant young master (debauchee)
    • One of his friends is actually a debauchee and arrogant young master
    • MC is an assassin and it is refreshing and new to read about his occupation and his role and behaviour in this new world.
    • I like the different characters and their interactions. They aren't 1 dimensional and they have actually different personalities.
Con

    • the story is sometimes very slow paced. For example, there is an entire chapter, describing MC stepping out of his tent and walking a few steps and another entire chapter was used to describe the usage and characteristics of a single fruit
    • translation quality (it isn't that bad, but it isn't good either)
    • sometimes contradictions in personalities and actions of some characters (out of character).
    • sometimes mc's actions were s*upid and felt forced, just for the sake of plot developments
Tip:

You can most of the time safely skip paragraphs entirely, if they begin with the following words: Therefore, Moreover, However, Furthermore, In addition, In fact, etc.

The novel started out great and had some really decent moments and political intrigue. However on reading beyond the current translation I got a bit tired with the author pulling threads and setting up conflicts but not resolving them. Now there is a long list of things which have accumulated and given the pace of writing I have my doubts whether the author can really pull it off. In any case, the list of story threads and conflicts are:

Spoiler

1. Increasing Grandfather's strength - I have lost count but my guess its being on the table for at least 50 chapters. Near 175th chapter there is an intro for "how" it is supposed to be done but ingredients are "scarce". This for the most part should have been one of the quickest thread to be resolved.
2. Struggle with Li Family - This has been one of the central points. Still unresolved after 250 but the author thought why not simmer the plot even more and he has added "Supreme Xian" as the master setting up another conflict.
3. Struggle with Snow City - This has been set with around 115 chapter. This is still unresolved and there is some other side plot which gets introduced around 200 chapters. Another "Supreme Xian warrior".
4. Struggle with Blood Soul Mountain Village (TL might have a different name) - Introduced towards 175 chapter. Still unresolved and while the story has been set to progression, there is another "Supreme Xian warrior" involved.
5. Teaching Ying Bo Kong - Another "Supreme Xian" warrior.
6. Setting up business side story - Working with Fatty Tang around 180ish chapter, still not set in motion
7. Getting Dugu Family under his thumb for drinking his "heavenly" wine
8. The Heaven Beast (TL might use a different name) storyline
9. Conflict with the girl from the brothel - Forgot the name

[collapse]

Don't get me wrong, the story is meatier than your average CN LN with their "cultivation" and "staged matches", I would have liked author to close threads before opening new ones. With 20% of the novel gone and author will need to talk about MC's cultivation and resolve these threads, I am not very optimistic. I am going to read another 200+ chaps ie nearly 50% to see if some of these things to get a good resolution, jf not most probably a 2 star would be the grade. <<less
