Rentt Faina, a twenty-five-year-old adventurer, has been hacking away at monsters for a decade. However, without much talent for the job, Rentt finds himself stuck hunting Slimes and Goblins for meager amounts of coin every day. Little does he know, all this is about to change when he comes across a seemingly undiscovered path in the Labyrinth of the Moon’s Reflection. What awaits him at the end of the path, however, is neither treasure nor riches, but a legendary dragon that wastes no time swallowing him whole! Waking up a short time later, Rentt finds himself not quite dead, but not very alive either— He is nothing more than a pile of bones! Armed with nothing but his trusty sword, tool belt, and ghoulish new looks, Rentt sets off on his quest as a newly reborn Skeleton to achieve Existential Evolution, hoping to one day return to civilization with a more human form. Will Rentt succeed, or will the labyrinth consume him for the rest of his un-death…?

TLDR: The story thus far is pretty interesting but the translators are a bunch of jabronis.

Also, it's not an "isekai" LN so that's a plus.

Characters:

... more>> The characters are interesting for the most part.

The main character is a low tier adventurer but he's made the best out of it through his strong work ethic, cunning, and social skills. He seems to be a thoughtful guy that doesn't hold any delusions of grandeur; having been stuck in the bottom rung of the adventurer's guild for quite some time.

The current state of LNs/mangas have made this sort of character into somewhat of a cliche but the twist is that he's not OP despite having said attributes.

Having said that, once he resurrects he's seemingly on the up and up and is able to slowly break through plateaus that he never could as a human. It's fun seeing him progress rather than watching an OP guy breeze through every single adversary. The fact that not every event is a walk in the park adds more weight to the story and character.

Certain characters seem to exist as generic foils simply for the sake of fulfilling a trope (*cough* knight gril), luckily, they aren't frustratingly unlikable.

Writing:

The writer has a simple format where he introduces the character then provides a chapter or two explaining their backstory and why they're relevant to the story/situation.

It's a nice and simple way to introduce characters but it can mess up the tempo of the main story a little bit.

Afterthought:

The translations are still early on in the story so there isn't much to talk about. It looks promising and it has an interesting setting.

I mainly made this review so I could justify bashing the translators at the end.

If it weren't for these translations, I probably would have never read/found out about this LN but my gratitude ends there. These people are charging 50 bucks monthly via Patreon for you to have access to their other chapters. It's their translations so they can hold it for as long as they want, but the line ends when they start profiting off another person's written work. The fact that you can read the Japanese version for free from the author himself makes this even more frustrating. This absurd price, never-mind the fact the fact that there shouldn't be a price in the first place, coupled with the error-ridden translations is insulting.

Bottom line, if you finish reading what "Rox" has translated, go to the JP site and pop those bad boys in google translate. Quality will be just as good (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) <<less

Well what to say, great novel, very interesting starting point. The only bad thing about it is greedy af translator (I'm not familiar with patreon but it said that one of his NFB chapters are only for patrons that pay $30+ a month, sry mate, not going to happen.) but, BUT he actually started realising some chapters on his site for the past month so idk. Maybe he decided to leave a 20 chapter lead for the patreons and the rest upload on his website.

I found the manga adaptation and quickly get hooked, which lead me to find the novel. However, I can't stand the style of the novel.

Really, mc's thought is going around and around and around, so many words for so little happen. The style kinda remind me of dungeon defense, which unfortunately, I had to quit no matter interesting the story was

  • This story really had potential but the author can never stay focused.
PROS

  • The pacing from weak to strong is relatively well done even though a lot of the strength comes from experience MC was not able to utilize while human
  • The MC doesn’t go all edgelord and ditch his humanity
  • The bearable parts are actually well written
CONS

  • The author often goes on multiple tangents in between even the smallest events. To make matters worse each tangent is often a full blown exposition so any relatively simple action could take multiple pages to complete
  • Due to all of the (mostly) meaningless exposition character interactions feel shallow and in turn make all the characters seem shallow
  • Important events/characters seem to be forgotten without the MC ever mentioning them again.

There's a heavy focus on worldbuilding and backstory, so the actual plot feels like it moves pretty slowly. MC is a likeable guy, but I wish he and his waifu (Lorraine) were a bit more proactive in developing their relationship.... more>>
Spoiler

I'll give them a pass for early on in the series when he's basically a dried up corpse, and it's not like the topic is ignored entirely. Lent muses that being mostly dead for a while has killed his libido of late, so maybe he just needs some time. Apparently he's always been pretty dull when it comes to the opposite s*x.

[collapse]

The actual chronological pace of the series is pretty slow as well. I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think more than 3 or 4 months have passed since the start of the series (394 chapters).

The upload rate of the web novel has slowed in the past year, possibly as a result of the manga and light novel adaptions?

Other things to note, not a harem and MC is not OP (yet). Guild girl certainly likes him, but she doesn't seem like she can compare with Lorraine. Is he OP?
Spoiler

He's a heretofore unknown vampire variant that only requires a minuscule amount of blood to sate his cravings (less than 1/20th or 1/30th a typical vampire), has no weakness to Seiki or other holy type abilities, has complete poison immunity, has wings which allow for limited magical flight, can use Seiki which is considered impossible for any undead type creatures. In addition, vampires have a vastly increased mana pool, and his ki and seiki have grown as well as he evolves.

Relationship:
Spoiler

Lent and Lorraine go to his hometown in order to find out more about the small shrine he gained his Seiki blessing from. Everyone there basically assumes she's his fiancee, and while she certainly welcomes the idea, Lent also doesn't really try to correct their misunderstanding.

Started off interesting but author ruins the LN by making it as boring as possible. Judging from the authors afterword from volume 6 the author himself can't actually believe people are buying his sh*t. Tried to read the WN MTL and its equally as boring, reads almost identical to the LN and seems like its turning into a generic harem series.

Most of text is just character dialogue that adds literally nothing to the story plus the blank as paper MC's sh*tty monologues where he thinks too much into every little... more>> f*cking thing.

Example of boring sh*t

Spoiler

In volume 6 1/4th of the novel is about how teleportation works and the main lead up to action cuts off and starts in volume 7 instead.

So far, I love this novel. I would give it five stars, but I'm tied of the long wait between chapters.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the translator, and up until today, I didn't know about the translator's patreon with advanced chapters, so I was blissfully ignorant.

The story is interesting. Fascinating. I love this kind of stories. So while people who are bored of this genre and these types of premises might find it bland, or cliche, I actively searching out this type of stories, as well as... more>> isekai stories, so I love it. I see nothing bland about it.

The story so far, (don't think the spoiler tag is necessary, I am not revealing anything spoilery, but I'll use it anyway. Just in case.)

Spoiler

the main character, after being labeled as the eternal bronze rank, with absolutely zero talent to become a strong adventurer, being weak as ****, regularly visits the weakest dungeon nearby, fighting weak ass skeletons on the first few floors only.

One day he discovers an unexplored area in the first floor, and ends up dying while exploring that area like a noob. Only to be reincarnated as a skeleton in the same labrynth. The story henceforth, is his struggle to evolve into a vampire so that he can blend in with humans and become a gold ranked adventurer.

The LN is good but the author tend to over explain things which sometimes seems repetitive information.

Example: the MC is hunting orcs but is it really relevent to dedicated 2 pages worth explaining about orc meat? Mind you that is only the MEAT explanations, not include 1 or 2 pages each to explain subject regarding what orc looks, subject about fighting orc, its body composition etc which some include repeated info. Then there are also explanation about slime in long details (looks, fighting style, its body composition and color, usage,... more>> spawn time, all in great details with justification and reasons for every categories above).

And that is only a subject about an orc and a slime. The first volume could be sum up as explanation about labyrinth, monsters and adventurer.

Spoiler

nothing much happened in first volume. MC died and wake up as undead. Evolve twice, meet his trusted friend and explore the new area that he found. All of these could actually been told in 3 chapters of a first volume of LN that have 5 or 6 chapters (not include prologue and epilogue). Too many unnecessary and repeated info stretch into 200+ pages of first volume.

I had seen some colored illustrations of the novel which reminded me of so-bin's Overlord in style, so considering the premise, I had really high expectations for the novel... They were easily broken though. When I saw the black and white illustrations I felt betrayed, as the humanoid characters, besides Lorraine (the heroine), aren't exactly great...

So, what's the story about? If you were expecting something Dark considering the title, go away. It may have looked like that at first, but I would rebrand it as "The Undead Adventurer and the... more>> Charming Researcher: Just marry already!".

So, MC is some weak ass adventurer with extremely low self-esteem. He dies by the dragon and wakes up as an Undead Skeleton. Aeons pass by, all his acquaintances are dead, he survives the harsh dungeon as a weak skeleton slowly climbing to the surface... He wakes up as a Skeleton, he is even weaker, fights other monsters and is slowly evolving in monster ranks, saves a girl adventurer who helps him to get out of the dungeon, then MC goes straight to his friend to get some help. I think from the moment he left the city, died, reincarnated, evolved, met the random girl, got out and was able to get inside the city, a matter of about 10 days went by... Seriously. Oh, and his low self-esteem? That's only personal, everyone in the city knows that although weak, he is a great and very prudent person who helps newbies and is a veteran of sorts.

And there goes everything that could be considered "dark story".

The heroine is a very competent magician who is also a genius researcher, they met because MC taught her a bunch about how to behave in the past, and she got attached to him... I guess... As friends, of course... Both characters are very dense, but work well together, because she is interesting, the MC is not.

The story is very slow... It doesn't help that there is a lot of filler to fill in pages, each volume has between 4 and 6 chapters, and boy they could be shortened by a lot, that's how slow the story is.

And then there is repeatability... You see, if you ever took the novel in hand after a long time and couldn't remember what was the base premise of the story (weak MC is killed by dragon, turns undead, returns to city and everything follows up), do not worry, the same story is repeated, with details, in almost every volume (in one volume, it's 2 times!). The protagonist is going to do something? Let's fill it with as many characters (as in letters) as possible to make the novel longer, let's fill it with random conversations, let's also detail a bunch of random stuff, and repeat that as much as possible in case the reader forgot it from the previous chapter... Oh, the volume ended with MC deciding to go to a certain place and has to prepare before that? Let's make a whole volume with that preparation...

The premium extra stories... I could always care for them from other novels I read, because they seemed to complete, or add to the main story in some way... These ones however are filler, with MC and heroine doing good deeds, and being rewarded and praised for being good matured, and the new character made just for the short story learns a lesson, or is just shown to be good natured because he is MC's friend, and so on.

Now, I'm not going to say that this novel is not for anyone, maybe younger people would like it, it has many cliches and is quite generic, but I guess I can say that because I have read many novels with those cliches, but someone who hasn't experienced it may like it.

I was able to stand reading the 7 volumes, and am curious about the cliffhanger, because it seems the plot is starting to move into a sub-climax of sorts (8 VOLUMES IN!)... But do I regret having started this novel? Yeah, I guess I do, it has been just good enough to make me not drop it, but it was uninteresting enough that I hardly felt the urge to continue reading...

However, here are a few things that this novel does not have (And by that I don't mean it as bad, just that it may be easy to misunderstand and expect them due to the type of story) :

  • Harem - Lorraine and MC are a pair, and nobody gets between them.
  • Overpowered MC - Although he gets stronger as he evolves now, he can still be considered weak compared to strong people. Strength is far from being his defining character.
  • Anti-Hero Protagonist - He is the very definition of cliche protagonist, if anything is to be saved, is that he is not hot blooded, because he knows the harshness of the world.
  • Betrayal - Everyone is MC's friend. Let me repeat it: Every single relevant person in the damn city knows MC and wants him well, even if they don't know his secret.
  • Monstrous Appearance - That's the case at first, but it doesn't take that long to get the expected "human form" that makes him look the same as he was, and so everything goes back to how it was before, just, he got new extras.
PS: In regards to the WN, I went to check if it's still being written, and found out there were over 600, although with some leaps of time in between the latest ones. From the titles, I could understand that the stopping point of Vol 7 is around chapter 300... I haven't read the WN, but I can imagine that those must be some really short chapters (2 released per day, every day), for 7 volumes of a medium length light novel to reach so far in those numbers... <<less

This is a surprisingly good novel. It definitely deserves a proper translation. I first checked out this series by reading the bit of manga that's out and absolutely loved the story so I tried reading the novel. It's not too different from the manga; the MC is a bit more of a chatterbox (in his head) in this version but that's fine. I just wish we had a good translation of it somewhere. All that's out right now is something on par with slightly edited machine translated stuff, and it's... more>> only up to chapter 32. <<less

Okay we're here to review the novel not the translator so I won't comment anything about the translator.

The premise of the story is pretty good, but pretty common nowadays.
There is not too many characters so far, but the author explanation of each character and background story is pretty neat.

The bad thing about this novel is that the story sometimes paced really slow because of the main character internal monologue. Sometimes the monologue even repeating what's already written in the previous chapter. There's this one time where 2 chapters feels... more>> like 1 chapter since some of the information in those 2 chapters overlap so much, and the story itself doesn't progress much since most of it just internal monologue.

But it's still pretty early into the story so I'll give it 3.5 star for now mmm... <<less

Edit: It does get better later on. I think it still repeats a bit too much, but I'm considering bumping my rating up to a 4 or so. I feel that this does have some things above other books that I've read. Namely the relationship between him and the female lead is interesting. There are still a lot of ass pulls, but I think it has something going for it.

I'm reading the light novel. Does this person not have an editor? I could legitimately quote 20 pages of text where... more>> approximately 4-5 pages of actual content happens, if that. They keep repeating facts and restating them in slightly different ways, using unnecessary words such as "obviously" pretty much every other sentence, and I'm like, "Well if it's that obvious then WHY ARE YOU RESTATING IT 20 TIMES?!" It's kind of annoying because I know this could be an okay gimmick for a contemporary fantasy light novel (not even an isekai for once), but I legitimately cannot even get absorbed. I find myself having to constantly skip passages and attempt to get to the next piece of actually salient information.

And I don't think it's necessarily the author that gets the hit for this. Assuming they have an editor, this is utterly the editor's fault. You should be able to see this pattern within 20 seconds of starting this novel.

I just hope it gets better after volume 1, because at the moment this is an utter slog. <<less

Well ive actually had read thru a lot of chapters, free ones obviously so, I think this is a very good novel for those who likes that sort of tropes where the weak becomes stronger and monster evolution like Re:monster. The progress is quite exciting, the MC isnt that boring and he actually has a very good personality IMO, reccomended for those who likes these types of novel. This is really good. Especially now that it has been properly translated by JNC, you just gotta love this. I literally have 0 complaints. This is not the best novel of all times, but it succeeds 100% at what it tries to achieve.

To recap the premise: ... more>>
Spoiler

A guy gets killed in a beginners labyrinth upon encountering a dragon (which was totally not supposed to be there since it's a mythical creature). The guy goes "oh well, I am done now, after 10 years of adventuring, I am still a bronze class (one class higher than the lowest class) and now I am gonna parish", but eventually wakes up as a skeleton and decides to get a human-like body by killing monsters and evolving into a vampire so that he can enter the town again and continue being an adventurer (to fulfil his dream of becoming a mythril class adventurer).

The characters are believable and sensible. Even though the MC is strong, he's not ridiculously OP. The story progresses nicely and the world feels real and not too RPG-like.

My only complaint is that the story drags on sometimes. The author takes twice as long to describe something than is needed, and sometimes large parts of a chapter feel redundant.

Too many sideway details?

Like, when explaining about traps in dungeons, then author proceed to also explain what a dungeon is in 2 pages worth of details, while at it, also explain about adventurers, also in multiple pages of details, then also explain about magic that can detect traps while also explaining about magic in general that also take multiple pages of explanation, after dozens of pages of explanation about random stuff, sometimes including flashback of some sort, it finally go back to the point with "anyway" then proceed with the... more>> actual point and conclusions about the topic traps in dungeons.

I mean seriously, lack of details could be annoying, but this wild "while I'm explaining this, I'm gonna explain this and that too.." kind of details that stretch for pages seems a bit too unfocused and annoying to read after a while. More than once, I was actually like "Oh yeah, he was explaining that didn't he...". <<less

I’m reviewing this off the LN. Was hopeful for this novel. Interesting premise done a number of times, but it could have still been good, but the tangents, monologues, and s*upidity killed it.

MC monologues for pages on end, and useless backstory can fill nearly a chapter. The MC is beyond s*upid as well. For some reason he feels the need to help every idiot that struggles in the dungeon, despite the fact that he is an undead and may face the full wrath of adventurers and priests because of it.... more>> He finds a secret passage that could help him grow tremendously, and he struggles with whether or not he should go down it or sell the info instead. Not only that, he gets some rando with no skill or experience involved and decides to give the spoils away for practically nothing because said rando has a failing restaurant that he took a loan to keep surviving. He justifies it by saying it’s good to have him as a middleman to do things for him since he can’t go to the guild easily, but he already has two people that are willing and have agreed to that already. Why does he need a third that he knows nothing about and is taking all of his rewards?

It might get better, but at this point it’s too hard to get through and not worth spending more time on. <<less

This is the review for the LN (don't know if the WN is the same)

This novel is plagued with internal monolog syndrome that makes the novel feel very dry and boring.

The first novel is mainly talking without much going on, doesn't help that the POV switch at times can be confusing and unnecessary. MC is boring and I would say kind of s*upid in the choices in the first novel.

Had to stop at the second novel since it was just as dry, it's not the world building that makes... more>> it dry it's the MC himself and the way it's wrote. <<less

The world building here is very detailed. The adventure who cannot get up the rank no matter how many years his body toll and the blood poured. The danger lurking inside dungeon. The politics ocurred resulted from the interaction among the dungeon's resources, the lurkers, the adventurers, and the world's inhabitants whether idle handlers, nobles, civilian, all of them were spot on too.

The harem tag is non existent imo, so far the women are only as decor, no deep romance or some fanservice. Good for me, bad for some lol

I... more>> dont have any patient with novel, also the manga's drawing is good and can satisfy the imagination. <<less

There's little to no romance in the story. It's mainly the researcher's and MC's relationship that can be seen as romantic but it's practically platonic. MC being desner than a brick doesn't help. The excuse for it doesn't help considering he was 5.

Novel is too detailed for basic things. A lot of monologue. Makes it full of filler and drawn out chapters. Some volumes have 1/5 of it explaining his secret to another person. Which gets repetitive. Sometimes 1/2 of novel doesn't have much going on. It can be seen... more>> as filler. I wouldn't really call it a volume. There's progression but it's rather slow.

A lot more progress and mystery showing vol 8. <<less
