“We are all like mermaids living below the sea. Around me, all that I know, is the sight of complete darkness.”

Lin Jing’s credo in brief–as long as it’s open, there is no PLAY that can’t begin.

Yet surprisingly, that strict good student who encouraged him to attend class everyday, Zhou WenYang, stirred some genuine feelings within him.

It wasn’t easy for both those boys to finally workout their “cohabitation”, but mistakes, accidents and the like were an unfortunate constant:

First, came the witch, then soon after her a wolf stormed in, following these intrusions–somewhere quietly waiting–was the toad!

Once more apologetic and thoughtlessly fickle, Lin Jing looked towards the indifferent Wen Yang, heartbroken.

… was it all truly hopeless?

I've read this story three times over the last four years, and each time, I was touched by a different aspect. This is by no means a pretty story and there's plenty of upsetting content, but it remains one of the most unforgettable stories I've ever read. If I had to provide a justification, I'd say it's because of the characters.

Lin Jing may very well be one of my favorite characters ever. It's hard for me to adequately describe him with just a few adjectives, because he's so full of... more>> life. He's witty and arrogant and honest, yet also incredibly vulnerable and self-aware. Because of his upbringing (or lack thereof), the one thing he lacks the most in his life is love. Yet the way he loves Zhuo Wenyang is so pure, even if he's often incapable of expressing his feelings.

Sure, many of Lin Jing's sufferings are a direct consequence of his actions. But he's capable of bearing that responsibility. He's someone who can fully throw himself into something without ever losing himself. TLDR: I love Lin Jing, and he fully deserves a happy ending.

My feelings for Zhuo Wenyang are a lot more complex. To put it simply, I have a crush on him (??), so I can empathize with Lin Jing in that respect, but he does mess up pretty badly. Part of it is just because he's young and quite naive. In any case, I'll withhold judgment until I've read the sequel.

On that note: The sequel of this book is finally being updated! The second volume of this book was abandoned, and so was the original version of the sequel, written well over ten years ago. There are a few things that have changed in the sequel, most noticeably the character's voice, but I digress. <<less

One of the most unforgettable stories I have read in the past days. Although I rated going against the wind quite low, I give this one a full five stars.

I can't help but think, what if they had been honest from the start? Would the story unfold in a more happy manner? Lin Jing has to be one of my most favorite character in the LL's universe, he is headstrong and arrogant, but is strong and vulnerable at the same time.

Zhou Wenyang messed up big, yet I still can't help... more>> but root for a happy ending with Lin Jing.

Spoiler

I really hope Lin jing's memories come back, he has suffered so much in the hands of other people, and even in the hands of a beloved. I know Zhou Wenyang and Lin Jing are actually cousins but I can't help it.

[collapse]

Maybe one day, they'll have a happy ending for themselves.

edit:

nowhere to be found has a sequel, pandora's box!
Spoiler

its a HE! Lin jing and zhou wenyang end up together after a lot of suffering, it's a really heartwarming bittersweet ending, I loved it!

Sounds like our MC is a snarky sarcastic teenager with no illusions about life. He knows what he has and what he doesn't. Pretty down to earth if a bit jaded. Underage s*x is a thing here so if that's a no-go for you, you'll want to pass. Would be a shame though, even at only one chapter it's shaping up to be a good story. It's fast paced with plenty of dialogue.

Good stuff. I like it.

Chapter 9, and I suddenly realized that Ouyang teacher was the one in 'Going Against the Wind'. I cried like crazy reading that novel, and experiencing how this novel just like 'Not to be Found' and 'Going Against The Wind' gave me same angst like real, I'm worry if I can handle their another shared universe, 'Love Late' and 'Round Trip'. Mannn it's so sadddddd.

Sorry for rambling spoilers ahead :

Tragic soo tragic but it is good that he was free at the end, this kind of lost excistence self pity and feeling like one is covered in filth, while he wnats this one person aproval this one person to accept him but he didnt give him his time didnt think too deeply and was self centered and judjemental, both of them didnt communiacte their feelings, and keot sticking knives to each other, one fell to deep he didnt know how to get himself of... more>> the dirty circle he got himself into, thought himself soo unworthy of the other not even having hope, resigning himself to a life in fiilure and obliviosn thinking the other is soo pure he cant touch, while the other thought him heartless emotionless beautiful and lusty, the scars that the surnamed zhou left him with are soo deep he cant recover from, zhou is very selfish though he wanted to love him, he is not the typical scum gong, very complicated, he loved him that is why he was cruel to him , he was punishing him for sleeping with others, for not loving him, out of jealousy, as he thought MC didnt love him, but I dont thunk we should blame him for everything, the MC didnt show his feeling other than wanting to sleep with him, it is like a chicken talking to a duck, and because of MC many lovers, when it came to light that ml's father r*ped the MC, ML didnt believe it, he thought that MC seduced him, he didnt have nay trust in him and was too angry to think which result in infinite regret <<less

I dont know how to rate this. At first I didn't like Lin Jing much as he was just engaging in casual s*x. I felt that he was not good enough for Wen Yang but as the story progresses, I feel very sad for Lin Jing. T_T

If these two had been honest with each other maybe they would have a better ending. But that also means it will affect the outcome of the relationship between the MC and ML in A Round Trip To Love, whom I am rooting for.

I... more>> could only hope that Lin Jing and Wen Yang can find love again in their universe. <<less

I was ready to give up on this story by c9 but im glad I persevered...

Uhhh I need to sort out my emotions for a bit. I'm crying rn because I rarely read this kind of resolution between 2 characters.

By far what I like is definitely Lin Jing. His character feels like the only real thing in this story. I kind of wish other characters (other than Lee and Wenyang) are developed more? But maybe this is just the author's way of writing so : /

We find out a lot... more>> of info in this story through dialogue and whilst that's awesome it feels like a lot of the scenery is fake (if that makes sense?) It's not a bad thing but it's hard for me to visualise in my mind how the characters move and interact with his surrounding (if again that makes sense. But it's just a tiny thing im dissatisfied about.

Spoiler

Haha when Wenyang said gays are pe*verted and abnormal... that really really hurt. I dont like the ending but it's the best thing for the both of them

It is a short read but it does give you a punch in the gut from the angst. The characterization, is awesome. Most of the characters are already well fleshed out, but specifically the MC, he almost feels like a real person from his thoughts, to his emotions and resulting actions, which made me relate so much more to the story, not just as a bystander reader. I felt an emotional attachement and empathy to the MC. His self-depreciation, self-loathing, self-abandonment, his love and yearning that has him under its... more>> clutches, how the ML contributes to it and how the MC interprets some things, all of it felt real. I blame the ML only as much as the MC, who actually has less blame towards ML and hurts more, as I do relate to the MC's love and empathize with it, and I do understand the ML's actions, though it doesn't lessen the grievance, the disappointement and hurt of the MC. This is a special story as I do relate to quite a few of the MC's thoughts such as "It was only today that I realized that I belonged to the abnormal type. Normal people looked down on us. He was normal, so he looked down on me (....) I thought that it was still more suitable for me to be with the others. In that circle, everyone was the same, so awful that no one had the right to look down on anyone." because sometimes it really does take an "abnormal" one to understand another, those "different" won't relate or even really try to understand, because they have the moral higher ground. "Misery loves company" ig. How the MC is quick to take things upon himself as his fault even though it is not, how he tries to distance the other from the situation and instead takes it upon himself lest the other feels burdened, is really heart-wrenching but also understandable, he loves almost selflessly. And how he displays a carefree and easy-going carapace, how he gets mistaken as thoughtless, not serious and not sensible enough, and gets blamed for it even though he's really not if you had the mind to care and try to get closer to him and understand... In short, fated to meet, not fated to be together. <<less
