Lin Mu rescued a Samoyed.

Capable of eating, smiling, has a high IQ. Picks up anything you teach him quickly, a good helper around the house.

The only thing was that he doesn’t bark nor wag his tail.

Lin Mu took a ham sausage and coaxed for the thousandth time, “wag your tail, and this ham sausage is yours to eat.”

The Samoyed raised his eyes impatiently, and with a single shake of his tail, shook out nine.

Lin Mu: …… F*ck.

Afterwards, the fox that did not wish to reveal his name, Mr. Yan Xuanjing, said in an interview: “Now I regret, I deeply regret. At that time, I shouldn’t have pretended to be a dog to take advantage of him, shouldn’t have touched him, rubbed against him, eaten his food and slept in his bed. Now I have a home that I can’t return to and a wife I can’t sleep with, I regret, deeply regret.”

A cute and fluffy story with a fluffy fox that has nine fluffy tails! With comedy and sad bits throughout the story. The story is quite slice of life, with an ongoing mystery that eventually gets solved.

MC isn't the white lotus 'oh we should save everybody! Nobody gets hurt!' type, and has his own biases, thoughts and ideals. But this does mean that he's biased towards people he cares for, and can accept them doing kinda iffy things because he cares for them.

ML is cute!! Both in his fox form... more>> and his 'I'm trying my best, but all your hints are flying over my head.' manner. He does try to protect the MC, but not just shelter him, and instead helps in any way he can.

Side characters are wonderful, with their own mini-plots and characteristics.

Points to note:

  • Not very action/adventure based. Even though there's a conflict going on, it isn't the main focus of the story.
  • Sad bits here and there.
  • Quite a bit of the plots are based on Chinese myths/ideals.
  • Revenge and karma is a theme.
  • Different worlds, different ideals.
All in all:

  • 9/9 fluffy tails, overall very cute and sweet
  • No love triangles and dogblood dramas
  • good side characters, though lacking in female characters

If you like Natsume, you would probably like this one.

A sweet slice-of-life story about a young graduate who had no idea of his lineage until he was assigned to the local government office filled with other "non-humans."

Our clueless MC stumbles on the world of the monsters, a very brutal and morally gray world, but through exploring his own unknown lineage, starts providing a small haven for the "weak little ones" in his home and garden.

The side characters all have their own goals and histories interconnected with the main action/plot, while... more>> the MC is more of an outside observer who helps regulate and record the happenings while exploring more about the world he's become a part of.

There's a lot of play on chinese mythology/feng shui in this one, with the concepts based on things like karma, building merits, battling resentful energy, and so on.

The author doesn't really explain any of these concepts, assuming that readers are familiar with their cause and effect, much like how many (badly written) generic western fantasy writers would not describe worldbuilding if it doesn't deviate from the typical castle, dragon, wizards.

Unfortunately, the translation doesn't help.

While I am grateful for the translators' hard work, too much of the translation is absolutely literal and makes the paragraphs difficult to understand.

Spoiler

Imagine this sentence: "X was feeling down about the ending."

Becomes translated to: "X was feeling south at the end."

Instead of translating "down" with the emotional meaning (synonyms being: unhappy, depressed, etc.), the translators would put a something like "south." Yes "south" is also a synonym of "down, " but in English, "south" has the connotation of "f*cked up, " like "things have gone south."

If you re-read the translated sentence 3 times, you might be able to piece together that it meant "X was feeling down" but it requires a lot of effort and attention. Not to mention, almost every paragraph has 2-3 mis-translations like this in every chapter of the story, and consider the chinese-mythology-based subject matter, things get even more confusing.

The readers definitely don't have the background to figure out what the characters really mean in-between foreign concepts like balancing karma, soul scattering, and metaphysical scales.

[collapse]

Nevertheless, if you're able to power through the translation, the story is a pretty enjoyable and fluffy ride. <<less

Read this novel a while back before it got picked up... good story with depth~ lots of comedy on the surface, but definitely has angsty/sad undercurrents that were a little too much for me.

Good Read! I liked MC because he wasn't a Mary Sue character despite being kind. MC is a facecon and had a major crush on ML 🤣😆

ML took a while, but based on his character profiling, it was reasonable. ML is not OP but he certainly is powerful and proud (with severe facial paralysis 😆). Was very funny to see him confused and flustered while asking for forgiveness for lying to MC 🤣🤣

Highly recommended!! 🔥

A light story. MC is sweet but not naive. ML is a very straight forward person who treats the MC very well.

The over-all tone of the story is comedic but there are a few sad/tragic undercurrents. These sad elements are actually quite heart-breaking but the author doesn't dwell on them too much. So the story remains fluffy.

The side characters are great. The cute ginseng baby, MC and ML's fathers and their interactions. The extras add a nice finish to the story.

The translation is excellent. The side notes are well explained... more>> and the translator's comments are funny. Good Job translator. Keep up the good work.

BTW, this is not yaoi. As earlgreyt mentioned, there are a lot of terms which are not explained. Readers who are familiar with the wuxia and xianxia genres will be fine. <<less

Pros:

  • Begins as sweet slice of life with supernatural elements and stays fairly cute up till the middle point or so
  • Ginseng Baby best character, I demand more screentime for the mimosas and little potato too
  • mu*der Uncle runner-up best character
  • Some very adorable descriptions of arctic foxes
  • Supporting Wife Guys
Cons:

  • Around the middle the author decided they wanted to add "philosophical depth" or something, but wasn't actually a good enough writer to handle it so it turns into an unfocused, tedious, and frankly lazy "you're right, he's right, evewybody is vawid uwu" thing even when characters are saying wacko stuff about killing anyone weaker than them lol
  • Nobody actually disagreeing with each other despite differences in perspective means no conflict, which makes for some pretty boring conversations where no one is actually communicating meaningfully. Lost interest. I came here for cute hijinks, not to be spoonfed wishy-washy pabulum about how we 'shouldn't try to engage with people who've experienced things we haven't' (which, what??? so by that metric you've talked to, what, five people??? literally what do you think interpersonal communication is???) by someone who's never actually put any serious thought into anything they're trying to address.
  • MC's "complex character" seems to consist of just being weirdly morally flexible in a "mu*der is ok if it's people I like doing it to people I don't care about, I have 0 qualms or concerns about this whatsoever" way and does not strike me as memorable or distinctive in any other sense
  • ML is just... there, being way more interesting as a cute fumbly fox than as a kind of emotionally stunted human being who mostly wanders around not knowing what's going on with people. GO BACK
  • One of Supporting Wife Guys (ML's dad) both a pretty annoying manchild character and a really irresponsible father

I agree with the review by Hybridiris.

Negatives: Lack of pacing, strong plot and a sense of purpose. Romance etc r not detailed, it's just there.

Positives: Light hearted read with fluff. A lazy read with no extreme detailed/lengthy sad parts.

Any sad elements r written in the background in a way that won't make u depressed. Altho if u read into it, it would b quite sad.

Rarely have I laughed in almost every chapter of a novel, this one really takes the cake. The novel starts off as relatively somber but quickly devolves into hilarity. Poor MC is left to puzzle out the psychology of these shameless, crazy monsters who are quite content to sabotage each other at every turn.

Spoiler

ML tries to teach MC to fly by jumping off of buildings because that's the way he was taught to fly, but it turns out his dad accidentally dropped him while flying and ML was a flying genius... Everyone takes turns pointing fingers at each other for their poor teaching habits.

Then there's tattle tale ginseng baby making sure everyone gets in trouble by ratting everyone out.

Later at the end when dad fox is fighting to save the world, everyone is just eating snacks and playing board games because they have nothing better to do, hahahah.

[collapse]

I really wouldn't say this is a romance novel as MC and ML have little more than a bit of affection for each other, although it's implied that the development of their relationship progresses further after the end of the novel. The plot is interesting, although I wouldn't say the world building is great, and the transitions can be a bit confusing at times.

Nonetheless, the comedy afforded by ML and dad duo is great. If you don't mind that there's not much romance, this is a great comedy novel.

Spoiler

When dad and son commit mutual self destruction by blackmailing each other, causing ML to turn into a child wearing a skirt and dad to become a dolphin, hahaha. Then ML goes through great lengths to develop the country so that they could have internet, just so he could get his mom addicted to video games so he could slack off and travel the world while his dad is stuck with mom. ??

Fluffiness trumps all.

Light hearted romcom with quite a few tear jerking subplots. How the emotional entanglements were presented were meaningful and enjoyable.

Binge-read and couldn't stop!

I'm currently only on Chapter 34, but I really like this story so far.

It's sweet and funny, and low on the drama side (but it's definitely not boring!). The ML is a good person who treats the MC well. All of the side characters are charming and likeable.

Actually 4.5⭐️ For me. It was pretty good and as the others said, if you like Natsume Yuujinchou, you'll probably like this as well since it has a similar bittersweet feeling/atmosphere to it.

The 0.5⭐️ Taken off was because I personally felt that the Non-Human Sub-District office could have been utilised more than how it was in the novel.

Would have been nice to see a case by case basis or arcs revolving around a Monster or human or half-Monster, like in Natsume Yuujinchou, and some relationships with supporting characters could have... more>> been explored more but anyway, the story itself and the characters were good and I enjoyed it. <<less

I am only up to chapter 27, but I felt the need to review just because this novel really exceeded my expectations.

The ugly cover and terrible summary don't really represent this book well at all.

I feel engaged by the plot, which is gentle with some suspense. I really enjoy the characters, who I thought would be one dimensional clichés but who really haven't been, the MC's personality is sufficiently complex it's difficult for me to describe it and the ML is also slowly being sketched in greater detail. The side... more>> characters are also fun.

In addition, the author somehow keeps surprising me... Not big twists, just small developments, but I somehow never expect the story to go that way and then it does. The story just feels very fresh and refreshing.

Edit: ALSO! the translator is *fantastic*, I particularly love how they provides photos and recipes for all the good mentioned. <<less

A smooth fluffy read.

I read it in one sitting. There's no heavy drama going on. I like how the character of the MC opens up to the new world that he's now currently living in.

It's very entertaining and funny.

... more>> I also like how the ML and MC meet each other and slowly develop their feelings. A lot of moments in this book have comedy in them.

There were times when I'd burst out laughing at their antics and of course, there's also sad moments. The past of the characters, what they've been through and everything makes my heart ache. I love the MC's family.

There were also certain chracters where my feelings for them are torn. They're a villain but also a victim.

I do love the ending.

I also love the little twist that the author added in the end. It was very mind opening and a new twist in this genre.

I'm happy that I've read this. I wanted to say thank you to the author and to the people who picked up this novel.

Please continue your hardwork and I wish you well and good luck. Have a good day ahead. ?✨ <<less

This novel felt like it really meandered without a clear direction. The characters were somewhat interesting, but no character was truly explored too much aside from the MC. To be fair, the MC's relationship with his mother early on and his inner thoughts are imho the best explored and well written part of this novel. Aside from that it reads as very bland slice of life despite the fantastical setting. If you are here for fluff and romance, there's some fluff but romance not so much. Read this if you... more>> have nothing else to read, but like other comments have mentioned, some of the plot points aren't really explained and can be hard to understand for non Chinese readers. There is interesting world building and story elements. I just feel the pacing and execution were lacking. I dragged myself to finish the novel but it was only because I had nothing to read at this time and felt like I needed to finish it. I'm glad others have enjoyed it. It's just considering how highly rated it was, I figured it needed a review like this to counter balance the others.

TL:DR - If pacing, strong plot and a clear sense of purpose matter to you, this isn't the novel for you. If you don't mind a meandering read, meandering even by slice of life standards, feel free to enjoy the fluff. <<less

This story have their light and dark moments perfectly balanced. You will be appropriately saddened by certain points, and also chuckled due to certain happenings. Though it leaned more towards lightheartness and make you smile all the while.

All the characters, from MC and ML to the side characters have their own characteristics that able to differentiate from each other. Actually the side characters really livened up this series as they do most of the heavy lifring in the progression of the plot.

ML and MC relationship is slow but sweet. A... more>> breath of fresh air from all the other domineering gong and pitiful shou out there. <<less

I like this quite a bit!

Characters: 5/5

Focus is definitely not on MC, as strong character building is seen for many of the side characters. MC is pretty funny, not the super weak bottoms that I hate, and I really like ML. He's super powerful but NOT AT ALL arrogant and easily takes things in stride. He's not yandere at all, respects the MC and his relationships and wishes, and is always there to protect MC. Also, ML's thought process is super funny lmao.

... more>> Plot: 5/5

Great world-building, doesn't feel like there's any plotholes. It wasn't overly ambitious and covered a good amount of content for this novel size, so it didn't feel like it was dragging on either. I was pretty confused in the early chapters as they lay the foundations about the setting with monsters, but I skipped most of it and it didn't really make a difference in the end.

Writing & Translation: 5/5

Thanks for the translators' hard work! <<less

I really liked this novel, super cute.

The development of the plot I feel is very complete even if there are no moments of great tension.

This story had something that I really liked, which is usually ignored in stories, it was the development with secondary characters, all of them were well developed not only with the main ones but also with other secondary characters which made the intentions more fun.

Even with all this, there was something that ended up discouraging me throughout the novel, all the relationships were very well constructed... more>> but I think the relationship and interactions between the MC and ML left something to be desired, I feel like they ended up interacting much more with the secondary characters and developing their relationships than between themselves, it seemed that even though they were close to each other they barely interacted, this ended up making me super frustrated, plus there's the fact that ML spends almost the entire work in his animal form, which bothers me a little because it seems like he's in love with a pet and not a person.

This story was so short of being great that even with these problems it wasn't bad, mainly because the secondary characters are super captivating (the main characters are too but I still feel frustrated that they don't interact more).

I apologize for the grammatical errors, I don't write very well in English. <<less

4.3

Relatively short read, fun and humorous characters, some touching moments, sweet main cp.

Really liked the side characters, especially the whole situation with Nie Shen. He's a very complicated character and I found myself sympathizing with him at various moments.

... more>> The story ended a little abruptly in my personal opinion, would have liked to see more of... everything tbh. Felt like the ending was a bit rushed.

I actually really liked how the MC and ML got together. The MC realized his feelings pretty fast, and the ML also has a straightforward character. There wasn't much fuss or hassle. But I think I would have liked more details on like developments of their feelings. This is one of those novels where the author wants (and I as the reader is also willing) to just take it for granted that the main couple likes each other very much. But I always feel a little like this belief is being dangled in midair if I don't have very solid basis for it. After the main cp got together, there was still plot progression, but there wasn't really any relationship progression. Like it was kinda like oh they got together and now they can kiss and thats it. I wanted to see them like... get closer emotionally (as well as physically LOL), accommodate each other, do things for each other. I wanted to see like real proof that they value each other, yknow?

Anyways, its still a really cute read. Would recommend. <<less

This story has a nice world building and lovable characters. The plot is very interesting as it focuses on monsters, humans and half monsters. The translation is really great as the translator always sticks some notes for us to understand some terminologies.

However the reason why I can't give this a perfect score was simply because the story doesn't have a direction and really lackluster. The story drags on and on as there was nothing notable happening in the plot. Even the romance between MC and ML is also lacking. Even... more>> if the story falls in the category of slice of life and fantasy, I still think that there should be a climax. The whole story was too relaxed, sometimes funny and 1% drama and that was it.

Normally I'll spend 1-3 days reading such a short novel, but sadly this took me a week to read and I still haven't finished yet. Overall it was okay. <<less
