No Pollution, No Public Harm

“When I was young, whenever I wrote essays, my last line was frequently ‘I am determined to become someone useful to society.’ On average, I made this resolve twenty to thirty times per school term. I was very thoughtless.”

“Only when I grew up did I realise that to become someone who brought no harm to society was already the biggest accomplishment I would have in my life.”

Due to working through the night and putting in overtime until his liver was going bust, the leader of the Martial Arts Alliance was in a bad mood. He refused to organise the yearly Martial Arts General Assembly.

The descendant of the previous Sect Leader of the Beggars’ Sect was someone addicted to swiping the phone and online shopping; Tang Qian Yan who left no marks when stepping on snow produced a wretched shut-in with severe social anxiety disorder…

Like the water in the rivers flowing away, the state of the world became worse day by day. Only the followers of the demonic cults preserved their original aspirations. As ever, they shouted their slogans every day and worked hard to sell health supplements made by black market suppliers, carefully and seriously disturbing the public peace.

And, among the jianghu people mentioned above, whether they belonged to the righteous or the evil, not a single one of them could fight.

Kindness repaid with kindness, evil repaid with evil? White Horse Neighs in the Western Wind? Such things did not exist. Everyone still had to pay their credit card bills and house loans.

There were four ways to write “anise” in “anise beans,” and five levels of “grief.”

There's something in this story for everyone. The quality of translation is superb. The quality of the actual work itself is top-notch. The plot, while perhaps a little mundane, is at the moment promising. The characters are definitely not 2-dimensional. The description of actions and of characters, while perhaps short, is perfectly sweet enough that the theater of the mind has the reader in a first-class seat. Metaphors do not miss the mark.

Perhaps the best thing about this work is how relatable it is. Perhaps the worst thing about this... more>> work is how relatable it is.

This novel, out of everything else on this site, had me create an account to write a review for it because I felt that this barren review section was a waste.

Waiting for the rest of the 99 chaps to be finished.

2023 Edit: Having finally read finish No Pollution, No Public Harm after putting it off for 2 years, I can safely say that this is one of the top 10 Webnovels I have read online.

"On what do you build your life?" Priest outdoes herself by mixing-and-matching threads and microcosm of the jianghu and society together, intermingling them into a tapestry that seamlessly mixes them in the rising tide of the final climax. Then, calm.

Likewise, the story themes parallels this. The gears of time grinds away at the honor and debts and guilt of the older generation which yet survive, passed down from generation to generation. The hot-blood of the younger generation cools into a river of regret as they grow up, and the tide flows again. The older generation tries to give the younger generation the future they failed to have, ad infinitum. One wrong choice...

"Only when I grew up did I realise that to become someone who brought no harm to society was already the biggest accomplishment I would have in my life."

But the mistakes of our youth are not absolute. An abandoned factory of mistakes, now rebuilt into a park with a lake... and a bunch of hooligans who continue to squander their lives to carry the burdens of their forebearers and settle other people's debts.

"On what do you build your life?"

The tide of this ocean of tribulations, it turns and twists again and again; where the past and present go, they will not return. Time marches onward with change, hand in hand. "Who isn't being swept away?"

The characters in this story have worked very very hard for their ending, like the sun after a long night, like the smell of rain after a shower. I got hit a lot in the liver reading this book, but I wish future readers - the ability to make their own decisions... the freedom to choose their own future. <<less

High fantasy being crushed under heavy gears of the steady march of mundane societal progress is perhaps one of my favourite settings. And wow are the gears heavy in this novel. Far from the tacky and overdone world changing plots, the problems the characters encounter in this novel are extremely real. Too real. Those looking for an escapist fantasy to cope with their harsh reality are likely to curl up and cry themselves to sleep after reading this. But, at the very least you will be able to relate to... more>> a lot of what this novel has to offer. <<less

"On what do you build your life?"

ShuangWu's a very special story close to my heart. The way it depicts adult life and society is very thought-provoking, it's actually a bit scary how so many passages perfectly mirror my own situation or ideas (which is probably why I loved this story a lot).

Putting that aside, ShuangWu plot is engaging. I especially liked the modern wuxia thing, even if it's a genre I'm not familiar with. The humor is also remarkable, it's the signature Priest humor. As usual for Priest, the story... more>> does not focus too much on the romance, more so for her BG novels, but still, Gan Qing and Yu Lanchuan's dynamics are pretty fun and do not feel forced at all.

If you're looking for a light read, this is not it... but if you are looking for something that will make you think about the current society, and even about the choices you've made in your life, then come along and enjoy this gem~ <<less

Man, this story is so smart. There are parts where the humor is a little dark, but it’s really funny with some genuine A+ satire. If you enjoy wonderfully plotted stories with complex, developed characters who grow as humans (no “leveling up = character growth” here) please read this story immediately.

Now. I mean it. Do it!

P.S. - 10000 stars for the translation, which goes above and beyond. Some of the prose is quite beautiful and poetic.

I adore Priest and this is my current favorite of her novels

The story is about the twilight of a wuxia world, where the sect leaders are old and the younger generation aren't interested in the old ways
... more>>
Spoiler

The sword master doesn't use swords and he practices his martial arts as stress relief from his corporate job

Another master is autistic and works in a laundry

The last disciple of the assassin sect works in a new age trinket shop selling crystals and telling fortunes

[collapse]

Like all wuxia novels there are grudges and fights between righteous and demon sects, and the current generation has to clean up after the older

The original story ends abruptly, but the extras make up for it

The translation is wonderful, this story is a gem that I highly recommend <<less

It's hard to sum up this novel and give it the perfect review so I'll just talk about my experience reading this.

It talks about the difficulties of being an adult in our present society, of how our childish aspirations get grinded and lost as time past by, of leading a leading a life of drifting existence, of how sometimes the worries of paying bills become the strongest motivator to live and work and a lot more.

I often find myself getting melancholy or laughing maniacally at how much it resonates with... more>> my life.

I think ManyCaps said it best,

Gritty realism meets human warmth in a world where wuxia experts have to face taxes and death with equanimity. Worth a read, or two, since the story is extremely dense.
