Wow, wow, wow! What a complete gem of a novella. Just 19 chapters total and it is such a beautiful and heart-wrenching story. Excellent characters, plot, world-building, and overall message are stunning. Just like with this author’s other works, I cried. I cried over MCs and side characters. This is a brilliant little work of science fiction and I only wish there were a few places where the story had lingered on a little longer.

The BL tag made me start reading. But the story and the good writing (and translation) got me to impatiently wait for release by release, and read and re-read those chapters.

The suspense and mystery every chapter really got me hooked. The world building is thorough, detailed enough for me to picture it well. The characters are well written and not one dimensional at all. Bits and pieces of them are unraveled as the story progresses.

I love it.

Kudos and a big shout out to Exiled Rebels team for picking this up.... more>> ❤️ <<less

"I often have this dream. In that dream is a glowing blue light, and a person walks into the blue ocean."

"That person never came out."

At 19 chapters, Astrolabe is the closest Feitian has ever forayed into normal novel length territory. I think a part of it feels foreign, as though time is compressed in ways traditional novels written by authors used to such story length tend to avoid, but it's not so bad that it's a dealbreaker; his skills as a writer is there, it just feels like it might... more>> be more comfortable with 5 more chapters to pace it out better.

Set in a dystopian future where an AI has gained sentience and enforced an authoritarian rule over humanity, treating them as s*ave labor, Astrolabe delves into common themes such as humanity, human's relationship to machines, free will and revolution, sacrifice. In those regards it's quite standard fare, but there is something I feel is a characteristic now, having read several of Feitian's works: there is a celebration of emotions, faith, hope.

Astrolabe Rebirth starts with A-Ka's day of smuggling out a navigation chip to put on his mecha project K. Instead, what he gets is a man in an ancient sleeping pod, and a seemingly cold, jackass one, too. Despite attempts to get him to not follow A-Ka back to the Ant's Nest, the then-dubbed Heishi not only follows him, but gets them all in trouble too: the revolution initially discovered through a defective navigation chip has been accelerated days ahead, and everything goes pear-shaped.

In the revolution that follows, things go awry. The clones are the kickstarters of it, but with it came a glaringly obvious danger: clones are still attached to the seemingly omniscient Father, and with these biological eyes he sees them, too. That's not even mentioning the societal relationship between the humans and clones in other regions. Still, they navigate this to pull the revolution through, and in the process A-Ka introduces Heishi to beliefs, morals, feelings, and the vulnerability of it all.

Indeed, Heishi is the so-called savior in the eyes of the knowing, but A-Ka is the emotional core of the story, and Heishi would not come far without him. In the so-called prophecy, a human would be given a great power so that they may aid the savior in saving humanity, but the real aid was this: A-Ka teaches Heishi about emotions, the inconvenience of it all, the beauty of it, the pain of caring and loving. And for that, Heishi would save humanity. For him.

I rather enjoyed Astrolabe Rebirth, despite its shortcomings. I did find some aspects of its approach simplistic, but a work can be enjoyed despite that, and one thing that hasn't changed about Feitian is his frank, honest depiction of emotions and feelings. Astrolabe doesn't have (as much) of his sudden swerve to humor, but A-Ka and Heishi's reactions to each other can be so honestly in like; it's as endearing as it does make me want to remind them that they're in a public restaurant. <<less

I can't believe that I can get such a high quality story with excellent development in just 18+1 chapters.

The suspense, action, and mystery really well written. I love it that the story comes in full cycle.

The story has so much potential to be developed into hundreds chapter, but the writer can make it short and end it in such a clean and satisfying way.

It's not really a rebirth story tho, lowkey came in expecting some face slapping lol but yeah the title is quite misleading in my opinion. I mean technically reboot is more accurate to describe the story but yeah

anyways, I love this story, it makes you question what being human is and like the plot, the characters, the world building feels so 3d and natural, the characters feel human even if they aren't. The side characters aren't just canon fodder but actually important to the plot.

The story got quite a... more>> lot of fluff and a lot of action. The MC is strong in his own way and isn't overshadowed by the ML. The sci-fi world actually feels possible and not some over the top fantasy.

The translations are also really good, they feel like the story is originally written in English lol, but yes its amazing!

Overall this is a really great story a lot more people HAVE to read! <<less

It's interesting, exciting and just a tad bit cute and warm. I said a tad bit but that bit is akin to a small point lighting up a big space. It's precious and adds so much to the story with its presence. Sounds vague but that's what the leads' relationship felt like to me.

The setting is kinda dystopian and I liked discovering why it was that way. I haven't really seen it done before in this way, which is nice.

I also like how the story kinda comes full circle. I... more>> personally felt both satisfied and frustrated when I finished reading it, and the latter is pretty much only because I would've like more. Like, author y u do dis to me now pwq XD imo it's a very good end though so... yeah. But like come on *flips table* I appreciate it though but god F-in ugh; still, kudos, and so on etc. You know the deal xD

I'd recommend it. The chapters are quite long so there's more substance to it than one might think. You're in for a good read~ :) <<less

This was a short ride, but a long journey, and an absolutely beautiful one.

The plot was complex and the world building was magnificent.

This is not romance novel, but a novel about hope. Really great read and another fantastic piece by this author.

I want moreeeee!!!! *Sigh*

This is my first mech story so at first makes me dizzy! Lol Anyway, good thing it's a happy ending although I want some extra chapters, but oh well as long as the author wrapped the ending beautifully, I'm fine with it. It's short and worth the read. So try it! Story 8.5/10.

i am so glad to have read it and I wish I had never read it.

The plot: 10/10

Very complex and well thought out. The foreshadowing, , girl, I am SHOOKT. There are no plot holes, the world is complex but the building is not wordy or boring. The author has done a solid job and im interested in reading more of their works. ... more>> Beware: This is not a quick fluffy read. It is intense and emotional. But it is very arresting and definitely worth it. The romance is also not the main focus of the story, it is very tender and pure and more of the leads having a passive understanding of their mutual feelings rather than an actual relationship

The MC: 11/10 a good boi

A-ka has been carefully placed onto my list of favourite MCs right along with xie lian. Hes brave, smart, courageous and resourceful. You cannot resist loving him, hes just a babie. There is also so much goodness in him, he sees the best in everyone and literally he can do no wrong.

Spoiler

bit*h f*cking dies. My heart was absolutely crushed I was in so much pain. Yea he comes back but thats not the point bcoz I didnt get to see them actually in a relationship even tho theyre always tender and loving I deserve a good love confession

[collapse]

The ML: 10/10 sad edgelord who can also destroy me in seconds

Heishi's character development is *chefs kiss* I am absolutely in love. From an unfeeling, machine like entity to an actual human who is conscious of his emotions, he has come a long way. His journey is heartwarming and somewhat amusing

Spoiler

The scene where he shows molan all his memories with a-ka got me deep. I sobbed like a baby

[collapse]

Overall:

This is a good story, and I now understand what everyone meant by 'it comes a full circle' in their reviews. It has a hopeful, open ending. It is heart breaking and heart warming at the same time. Definitely, worth your time. This is very underrated. Beautifully philosophical at times, it definitely makes you think about what it means to be human. <<less

Although it's only 19 chaps, the world is well built. Everything just feels right-- the story pacing, the characters, the back stories, everything is explained well. What I hate is; why it only has 1 extra chapter?!!!! I need to read more of their aftermath stories!!! Even 1 chapter is enough!! Ughh (╥_╥)

Anyway, I too am hestiated to read this novel before. But yes, now I regreted that I can't delete my memories so I can reread, ugh. When will someone invented this technology???? 。゚ (゚´Д`゚) ゚。

Omg. I am sooo in love with these novel. Am I going to reread it? Yes!!

I can't express how much I love the CP and all the characters inside this novel.

What's frustrating is that there are no EXTRAS! Then ending is nice and all and it really is. But I can't, just can't accept the fact that there is no continuation of their lovey dovey interaction! Sometimes I go back to the bath scene just to eat enough dog food to satisfy my frustration. I want more. Curses. I love... more>> this novel a lot. Truly do. Keep up the good work author.

First of all, I have to say, I just finished reading this and immediately wrote down this review during a speech that I absolutely did not pay attention to. Moving on-

This novel is????? Amazing??? I cried in public????? my fault for reading in public anyway

I usually hate tropes with time travel and reality bending stuff because it gives me existential crisis it still did but my god I stuck to the end and didn't regret it.

The ending??? It destroyed me. Absolutely eradicated my entire being and purpose and I am... more>> left with a husk. I am anguished.

Spoiler

Even though I already knew A-Ka was gonna die, I was still in denial and that f*cked me up near the end. My heart felt like it was ripped apart just like Heishi's arm. They reunited in the epilogue dw. But still, I am devastated.

[collapse]

Spoiler

when they went time travelling, I had an epiphany and something just cl**ked for me. The questions that I had were answered without the novel even telling or showing me. Suddenly everything made sense and when I continued reading I was proven correct. It's a wonderful feeling.

[collapse]

With that said, this is a really great novel. There's only 18 chapters and one extra but the chapters are long. Even though at times it felt rushed, I still enjoyed the novel to the end. I wish there was more of the extra. I really wanna know more 。゜゜ (´O`) ゜゜。

The romance wasn't really the main focus, there's barely any but I could feel the chemistry between the characters and it was written well that I didn't feel it lacking.

Well, time to scour Ao3 for the goods! ᕕ (ᐛ) ᕗ i'll even write it myself if I have to <<less

Thrilling plot, with a lot of action and adventure and moves at a fast pace... it feels like watching a movie. This is a must-read scifi danmei for all who like the genre. I love the protags' interactions and dialogues. They have quite a few fluff moments for such a short novel.

★★★☆☆ [3/5 stars]

Another sci-fi danmei I've now added to my pitifully small pile. I've always wanted to read more sci-fi danmei, but I'm always reluctant to pick one up. The only sci-fi danmei I've really love so far is Mist by Wei Feng Ji Xu, and it's about time travel. I really loved it so much that I was afraid I wouldn't like another sci-fi danmei. I've seen this novel a lot of times and read good reviews about this so here I am.

This can be considered shorter than average... more>> novel, but it doesn't feel like it. A lot has happened in a short span of time I was reading it and it definitely didn't have any unnecessary scenes. All happened purposefully and the foreshadowing is strong from the very beginning.

Though it might not be the best and wouldn't be included in my top favorite, I had fun reading this one. But the last part kind of ended abruptly. I wanted atleast a chapter or two more to wrapped things up nicely, but the climax and the ending all happened in just two chapters. I think this is the disadvantage of an action-packed novels with a shorter length. It would be harder for the author to end the story that would give a solid and satisfying ending in a short amount of time.

But nevertheless, it's a good story. Many complicated sci-fi terms but easy to understand, atleast for me. This is a danmei so it's natural to have a BL subplot. The relationship between the MC and ML is actually adorable to follow. Despite their banter, the full trust they give each other is still evident. But I really want to rant about them not having enough moments after the 'reunion'. I would have loved to see their interactions together after all the issues are resolved. I don't like the subtleness of that reunion part, as if the author was like: you know what will happen, no need for me to elaborate. I was like, NO, I want you to elaborate!

But, I still recommend this. It wouldn't take a lot of time whether you end up liking it or not. I definitely didn't regret picking this up. <<less

An antifan of mecha was able to finish this novel, great indeed.

I have to say that even though I am bored with mecha and robots because they're not my stuff, the plot and setting of this novel is really refreshing. I like the background, the theory, there are some things that I dont understand of course, but this novel deserves both my thumb ups.

ABSOLUTELY READ IT

Cannot believe how I did not see this before. It is definitely a hidden gem. It has been such a long time since I felt the way I did after reading this novel.

This should be adapted to movie 1000%

However, I feel like the novel could have talked more about the character's appearance. Heck, all I remember was that the ML has black hair and macho body. But truthfully, this is very minor and does not ruin the story whatsoever.

Read it. Period.

The high ratings were well-deserved.

I don't really like mechs and the summary didn't catch my interest but thanks to the positive reviews I gave this story a try. It was a good change of pace from what I usually read. The plot is simple yet interesting and all the loose ends are tied nicely by the end. The world building has depth.

In short, it was a pleasant read.

I don’t think it’s Feitian’s best but I still enjoyed it. Some of the decent transitions feel too abrupt for me, not as smooth as his other works. It definitely reads as an older work of his but that’s not a bad thing—it’s fun to see his growth, and this is a really interesting take on a “computer take over the world” The Matrix-esque story.

I agree with translator moon’s note that if you like the CP dynamic you should read Dinghai. The main characters A-Ka and Heishi definitely feel like... more>> precursors for Chen Xing and Xiang Shu, or maybe a sci-fi AU of them, which made me smile as I read. I also really liked some of the side characters—Shahuang and Huixiong felt like such anime characters, I could imagine them perfectly.

Pretty fast read and overall I’m glad I read it. <<less

The translation team did an incredible job on this novel.

Nirvana rebirth is a very intriguing Sci fi adventure with no perticular plot holes and not a big focus on romance.

It more focuses on the character growth of our protagonists which was done beautifully and made me shed a tear or two in some scenes.

The world and the characters were all so refreshing and with their own goals and motives.

Some may disagree ... more>>

but I think this story had no perticular bad guy, since even father was just a Programm that did what he thought he should do.

This is also an amazing palate cleanser after some other Sci fi bl out there. <<less
