The first time I read this there were about 25-ish chapters out and I thought it would be about some all powerful demon king who got stuck with the hero that killed him, that initially disdains the hero but ultimately comes to love him akin to the way people usually feel affection towards those who are good people but are comparatively more incompetent than them. Turns out that's not the case. I really didn't heed the tags, as is how I almost always am when looking for something to read,... more>> but looking back they are really fitting. Usually tags that claim the protagonist as calm or clever or strong from the start feel like they're used to describe traits that the character has because that how they're meant to be. With this protagonist, it really feels like those tags came from the protagonist's experiences. I feel like there's a surprising amount of emotional depth to the story which the dramatic irony the story is saturated with really adds to. The relationship between the hero and the demon king is one I've really been liking a lot so far. That may or may not change the more we learn about the hero's feelings though. Currently, the tag about the love interest falling in love first holds true and we've only been seeing signs of the demon king's growing feelings towards the hero. The hero, well he treats everyone the same.

One of the things that the summary doesn't say that I feel really changes the perception of the story- and this is a bit of a spoiler but not really since it's established really early- is that the hero doesn't know that it's the demon king that entered his body. The demon king assumed his original identity from before he became the demon king so the hero thinks they're not the same person. I first thought that the hero knew the demon king was still alive within him and that the story would involve the hero trying to get rid of the demon king from his body, but nope. The hero actually thinks that the soul in him- that is, the demon king- was the demon king's- as in, the person currently residing in the hero's head without him knowing it- lover. And the demon king can't even refute it since it's the perfect cover story for the demon king who originally wanted to take over the hero's body. <<less

Very funny. Thus far, this is mostly a comedy and adventure series with some action thrown in. The MC is a curious mixture of wise and yet naive, which befuddles the demon king. The demon king is actually quite pure, conservative, and untainted, but he thinks of himself as a super baddie (He is the demon king, after all)... The Holy Son is a street rat who reminds me of the MC from Legend of the Sun Knight, even if he has to act serious when he's under the church's... more>> watch. There's a young horse, who is far more pure than any of the human characters. There's also a mysterious black unicorn, whose presence threatens the poor young unicorn's c*astity--little horse and little hero never ran so fast... The assortment of characters is hilarious to throw together and see everything go to hell.

Even with the comedy, there's still world-building and plot going on in the background. I'm very interested in seeing how all of this plays out in the end, and I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants some laughs. <<less

Lol this is so adorable not to mention also pretty funny. First 7 chapters are pretty entertaining. 4.5 because it hasnt reached 50 yet, I'll rate again if the chapters accumulate to 50. But for now, I recommend you reading this if you want a light-reading and shounen-ai (No signs of romance yet)

I'm addicted. I really love the protagonist's personality, it always makes me laugh because I could relate. (Of course! What, you expect us to leave a demon king's clothes that could still be sold? No way! In video games, I'm all about the money! $$)
Spoiler

AND- cough, cough, such a realistic and relatable response to the Demon King's story, I always find myself laughing out loud. The protagonist isn't that s*upid either, not talking about the demon king's part, of course. I love how he treats the game world as reality too, despite not knowing what happened to him.

If you're kind of having doubts as to whether to start this, try it. I feel like you won't regret it.

All hail the divine steed, Man Tou!

Spoiler

Light hearted and funny. No signs of romance. Basically, MC beats the Demon King in a game, ends up being transported into another world identical to the game, including his character's appearance and name, ends up having the Zeze (Demon King) go into his soul, and is now having a comedic adventure in the game world. Good stuff.

5/5 stars hands down boys.

I'm sorry this novel is f*cking amazing and you're lying if you think otherwise. All of the characters are fun in their own way and their personalities are all different and interesting, the MC's choices make sense and he plans ahead even though it doesn't seem like it at first, he has a brain and he uses it. He isn't a goody-two-shoes MC but he isn't heartless either. The aspect of him traveling about and meeting all of the NPC's he met when the world used... more>> to just be a game is nice to see as well, you can see how well he treated them even if it was just a game and the "family" of NPC's he's met can only bring a smile to your face. Overall this is a chill and heartwarming story, there has been a decent amount of action that has been more than enough to keep me satiated, I highly recommend this novel to all who want to sit down and read something uplifting and relaxing. <<less

The MC is an idiot but at the same time he's not. Do you get that? It's Luke he doesn't understand what's going on half the time and the other half he's at least 2 steps ahead of everyone. The MC is brought into the game world but only realizes it after 11 something chapters. It's a really funny novel!

Just started reading and at the chapter I'm at this was already a gem.

The world building is so interesting and the characters themselves were not bland but are full of personality. It also contributes with the gag the author keeps giving.

This MC was truly the best. He's not only very shrewd but also have a comedic sense of justice.

... more>> For the ML he's like a spectator who not only has to bear the nonsense of the MC but also got into the ride of BS knowingly and unknowingly.

I've read a couple of shameless protagonist but Xu Jun is really just the best. Highly encourage reading this. <<less

I really really love this MC!!!!!!

Characters: 5/5

I seriously love this MC so much!! He's the ordinary man anyone might see on the street, who enjoys some wine and gambling and dreams of girls, that realizes his own powerlessness to help the world. The occupation of a hero may seem glorious, but in truth no family would want their child to have this role; the actual work is dangerous and muddy. He's seen all kinds of people in the world, and knows what it's like to be betrayed or laughed at... more>> or schemed against. And yet, he still holds onto his bottom line and does "good" for the sake of doing good. His life is about more than just the end goal, but the meetings and experiences and the people along the way. He's righteous but not at all a Holy Father or naive and ignorant.

I also like the ML. He's the tsukkomi character hahaha they're pretty comedic together. I'm also enjoying the side characters, especially the "Holy Son" who is just as human as the rest and quite a bit more clearheaded from seeing the darker behind the scenes. I like the characters the author strives to create, who are not one-dimensional and very complex.

Plot: 4.5/5

Honestly, it's a pretty interesting plot. I won't say too much because it'd be spoiling, but it's quite intriguing. The author also weaves many different people and groups together. It's nothing suuuuper original and revolutionary, but enjoyable and interesting nonetheless. The entire story feels like the MC's character, giving off an ordinary-yet-that-much-more-special vibe.

Writing & Translation: 5/5

The translator even makes a lot of effort to clarify language or explain culture. Thanks for the hard work!

... Despite these comments, why did I score it a 4star? Because tbh I got a lil bored lol, but it might just be a me problem? <<less

Read like crack treated seriously, a fun and interesting story thats great if you want to experience western fantasy for the first time!

No angst, but I did find the ending abit abrupt (and the third wheel story line addition was weird) -- either way its a good story to kill time

4/5 stars

The ending is unsatisfactory. I feel like there should be extra chapters. There were some things that needed to be explained but I will not point some examples. I don't want to spoil the story.

Ending aside, the story is very interesting. I will wait for the translator to complete translating and read it again, not just on mtl.

The review that mentioned the emotional depth of the story is spot on. I read all 85 chapters in one (k) night and couldn't put it down. The story isn't just about the demon king being stuck with the hero and "hating" it - though those parts are hilarious! - No, it's about people. Our strengths and weaknesses, our desires, our resentments. It's about the simple tragedy of a man who becomes a Brave and kills the Demon King because he thinks that's what the world needs. And just when... more>> I feel the story is getting too contemplative, too real, or too dark for me to handle, the writer shifts focus and then I'm chuckling at the character's Shenanigans again.

Basically, if you wanna laugh like an idiot right after feeling crappy about the complex state of humanity and the desire to fix it but being ultimately unable to make any big changes because you are One Person - read this book. There's a quote from the author that really stuck with me:

"The world needs heroes, but it needs more than just heroes." <<less
