Netheril’s Glory

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

The protagonist, Punk, is a cautious, cold-blooded, and ruthless Mage.

His goal is always his top priority, over feelings or morality. When unnecessary, he doesn’t like to act like pigs to eat tigers; there are almost no life and death struggles, sometimes risky but steady progress. No strong enemy everywhere, Instead, Punk is always a strong enemy of others.

And he has a very keen interest in the secrets and teachings of the Netheril civilization.

Yes, finally! After having read RI I have only found this novel that has a evil and calculating MC and also has no romance. My hopes are high for this novel and I will edit my review after having read the available chapters.

This novel is boring and predictable the author goes out of his way to explain every nook and cranny of every situation. This novel is filled with nothing but info dumps that serve no benefit other than to increase the word count.

if you want to bore yourself to death go and do your homework instead that way you'll at least do something productive while getting bored.

I like this novel, but it has a very annoying problem. Anyway, everything goes well for the protagonist, no matter the situation, he always wins. To the point of being really forced, the guy never takes damage on anything, and when something seems to go wrong he always ends up profiting even more than he planned.

  1. After 1 week of intense reading I've finally achieved success in completely finishing this read and I've got to say that Punk Saian- the protagonist of this novel is undoubtedly an insensitive, cruel, truthless guy. He went as far as to completely massacre cities, kingdoms, empire, planets, stars for mere benefits, all so without any at all guilt or sorrow. The story takes a different route and doesn't end with him being above the heavens I am the only omni but merely (~spoiler) Brilliant sun spellcaster which is not even the strongest rank or close to it. Relevant characters such as- Kane, Smile, Aikal were incredibly fleshed out and each of them were funny and had a somber aura around them which really made this novel feel unique.

I really liked this novel, I did read it on MTL/Comradmao and translation was okay, still this story was very interesting and pretty original the MC - Punk, don't have some op gold-finger or have something special in a way (Netheril succession can be but more than millions exist so) , world don't turn around him and the world of this novel is very huge and have some good background,

Personality - Rationnal, Cold, Calculative he is not Chaotic Evil he only do thing that can profit him, no `friend`... more>> or familly, and for sure no romance or any love interest.

Power system is quite good like no one can beat somebody whit higher realm other than having trump card, legendary mage are the start of leaving mortal spirit and becoming higher species. The biggest threat of all thing in multiverse is It he is sleeping but did impose river of destiny that don't let people pass higher lvl than 70.

Only bad point, is that MC will not reach the apex level in the world (63 out of 100) I would love to see him fight or even destroy the multiverse and the big boss of Multiverse. <<less

obs: I have read all the TL and then jumped to MTL so you can take my opnion with a grain of salt.

  • What this serie is about?
Random earth dude (the only advantage is that he make meaningless earth comparison) that get his soul to throw into the void between universes (because plot), and his soul deformed/evolved into a psycho that cares for nothing but the road to power, very fitting for that is also the main point of the civilization of the new planet he is about to steal a... more>> body to surivive, vague based on DnD but is more general guidelines than any rule. Even the lvl system seen to be superfluous. If anything he uses mostly the Alignment system that seen to rule the world.

  • Good points
This is true Evil MC, that will not care for morals. And for an evil wizard focus, there is a good deal of powers and spells, as well magic system, while on the good side the variety of evil experiments, black market deals, and outlaw missions to keep you interested and with no romance insight, or any meaning social interaction in fact, as he has as much emotion as a golem. And like all evil MCs, his adventures are never simple with stuck of luck chance, instead is filled with small setbacks and minimal gains. Example:

Spoiler

One arc is all about his work on a evil union and after a series of tiresome battle his reward was 3 mostly useless master itens that he would later sell away. Or that One mission the MC join hand with 2 others official lvls powerhouses to raid the evil spider lair, however if was a good MC story no matter the means at the end of the fight he would get out with the main spoil while his 2 companions suffered for a reason or another. Instead because this is a evil MC story, one of the other companion get the prize and the MC is once again "forced" to use evil ways to get what he want (like kidnap the girl mage to force his previous companion to face him), then that too backfire because the companion hide the prize and so he goes even darker and need to sacrifice the whole city to find the dammed legendary loot. All that could be avoided in a normal story

[collapse]

  • Negative point (for me)
My biggest beef is with the MC machine personality that kill all social interactions, then is shown complete incapable of understanding people feeling (in special related to him) and is terrible in playing any kind of mind or intrigue game, and for some reason the only emotion left is arrogance that I have no idea where is from. So the only thing left is his obsession with magic, however his talent don't seen particularly impressive in any field, including his system cheat that is almost forgotten as time passes.

That is directly tied with his uncaring ways of using evil/cruel methods, because in all fairness unlike others unluck evil MCs he has a great start point, he has no time-limit, chasing enemy like revered insanity or even going some unthodorxy path that require him using any means be it foul or fair. And the results of his mostly foul means are always seen to be for small gains for the increased cruel means, that aside from the legendary item all others aren't very impressive. (See previous spoiler)

This dead end personality kill alot of world exploration, character interaction and all other types of plotlines, meanwhile his weird "evil" personality seen almost cartoonish evil sometimes as in evil with little to no reason, or at least he could be evil but don't make so obivous with some manipulation or fake being good, things that seen almost impossible for him. His personality make me sign because he seen to make things so more difficult without reason. <<less

So far I love this, it feels very similar to another book "Soul of Negary" and "Reverend Insanity" but it veers more towards "Soul of Negary" due to the experimentations and the overall feel of the story.

As a reference, it is very difficult reading MTL's (never mind it gets much better at around 85-89), but that may just be due to the bad writing. The writer adds in his own notes in sentences which is dumb, and it isn't like "this is how this works" it is literally just a... more>> wuxiaworld comment.

As an example

"When the girl came to the White Tower looking for knowledge and guidance in anticipation of the long journey, her Tutor presented her with a meeting full of "labor plans" and was sent to the small room for a while. Still feeling stunned, this kind of workload... Does the Wizard think of itself as Golem? (you are right) "

Why would you add that? It completely pulls me out of the story, so the translators should pull them out when they get to those. It's this type of thing that makes me pull this to 4 stars and due to the fact that the beginning is arguably the best parts in many stories it may just go down to 3 stars.

The author does have dividing lines unlike many other stories but it is also strange.

——–Dividing line——–

This is also weird, you don't need to do that, maybe once or twice just to get the point across but not every single time a dividing line comes up. The author also says that Punk has a hood covering his face with only his glowing-ish blue eyes appearing through however countless people see his face even through his hood so why do you say that we can't see his face?

These aren't large problems so they won't drop this any more than 1 star, but you will be annoyed a little bit while reading this.

I will get to the good parts now (Very small spoilers up ahead, any bigger ones and I will use the spoiler function)

The author does a great job adding to the world which is what I want from a D&D type story, and he doesn't do a dumb job like adding in multiple perspectives which just makes me want to skip chapters. Well, I lied he does do that but he uses them to show things through a person's eyes, not just showing the character living their lives until they met the MC. Another time the MC used an AOE spell in a war scenario and an ally soldier attacked him because they killed her lover, they don't show up later fueled by a desire for revenge against the MC, they die there, but it really makes you feel like those soldiers had their own lives. Too many stories have moments that "add to the world" when they really just showed me another plot-relevant character that doesn't feel "a part of the world" they feel "a part of the plot". <<less

Similar to warlock of the magus world and soul of negary. But not as immersive.

the writing is good but.. info dumps galore.

MC is ruthless but psychotically so. In movies the villain will threaten to press the nuclear switch in order to accomplish their objective. Well, our MC has already pressed the switch. Instead of threats he blows everything up first. then tries to fish out the now burnt chestnuts.

“Pursuit of efficiency” is supposedly the mantra of the MC. So if you can slaughter everyone to save a second he will... more>> do it no questions asked, and consider it a second well saved. Never mind that dialogue could have done the same thing but taken just a second more.

“profit is everything” so says the MC. Well there is a goose that lays golden eggs. What to do? Mc: Swipe the eggs kill the goose eat the meat.

MC gives off the feeling of complete rationality. Then loses it in anger. But it’s okay because he is still thinking clearly...

Also the author seems to have something against couples. Spoiler: if there is a sweet budding romance they gonna die <<less

Nice novel. The MC have no interest in romance so far and that the first reason I reading this.

It can't be helped some other novel have a nice start but later become tr*sh because of this and that girl.

Which is so irritating to no end. It's mostly became worst if that novel is harem.

Very few novel with harem tag became good to the end chapter. Sometimes you never know if it have a harem until the novel end.

Anway that for the meantime.

New update:

Spoiler

The MC from the start have a persona that "i-do-my-thing" attitude. He will do what he thinks is right in a calm manner. At first he wants to learn many things before joining to a big famous academy or function or whatever group it is.

Then something happened the involved some war between of some evil prince and s*upid princess.

Well, in the end he get a reward. So he started to learn that book notes and again during the journey he meet some Fall Rich family.

Help him to some things and get yet again a reward about golem theory or something.

By the time he completely understood things he changed his original plan somehow and started to set a new goal to become powerful using the road of no return.

A evil way. It's around chapter 71 or something not sure but slowly he become more evil just like the very start said.

He clearly meet many girls but for what I read so far, a romantic relationship is so low that you cannot see the bottom. The MC so selfish that will only do things that benefits himself.

He don't care how beautiful or cute a girl will be. In the end they just a tool in his eyes.

This novel is one of my all time favourites, let me tell you why. So, the story starts with a guy from earth being transmigrated in a dnd type magical world. However, in between he suffers in the void for an uncountable amount of time, because of this he won't have to go through many chapters of character development (for some it might be bad but for people like me, who just wants a evil MC in the action it's a good thing) and directly start as a patient,... more>> calm, calculating person who wants benefits and be strong, so he won't have to suffer like that again.

For the next couple of hundred chapters, he grows because of various experiences, from his initial personality to a more evil type and totally losing any type of morality he might've had at the start.

Throughout his journey many characters get introduced, though close to everyone dies only few survive, like kane or smile, and they get fleshed out too. Though, personally I would've rather preferred Kane to not get introduced or just dying in an epic battle with punk. He's like a c*ckroach, and will not die for whatever reason, which I didn't like, as he was so much like an evil MC too, and I prefer only one evil MC in one novel.

Anyways, if you are bored with all those justice MC and want some spices in your novel reading life, I definitely recommend this. <<less

This author can't write for shit. I read and keep thinking about whether the author will ever stop talking. The entire story is told by the author, the characters do nothing to expand on it. The author simply keeps talking instead of letting the characters do their part. Also, this novel is so edgy and boring for no reason. All mages only care about benefits. Why?? Just because mages pursue knowledge doesn't mean that they can't be human. Although it's supposed to be dark and the MC is supposed to... more>> be evil, everything is taken for granted. The power system is never expanded on. The MCs ego is so inflated that it's insane. Also, everything goes through MCs way for no reason.

Spoiler

In the spider cave, the green spider was supposed to delay and warn, but guess what? It is so brain dead that it doesn't do the only thing that it's supposed to, so the MC turns a very disadvantageous situation into an advantageous one through dues ex machina

[collapse]

Last note: The author should've never wrote about camps such as lawful or chaos. It's so pointless to group characters into such rigid categories to the point where the character's motives become the camp they are in instead of actual motives.

Also for people who like evil MC, you need to understand that it's not that evil MCs make the story or world good. It's the fact that authors who write about evil MCs have more freedom to make an interesting character or an interesting world that's more reflective of reality.

Tldr: don't read this garbage and get better standards if you think this author can write for shit. <<less

The MC is definitely evil... but that's about the only good point. It constantly says he pursues efficiency and is profit-oriented, but he's just an edgy as*hole even when he could get more efficiency / profit by just... not being a complete d*ck for five minutes? Like even while in a group that's trying to hide and escape, this guy casually tortures a random creature for fun and lets it scream (making it totally clear where they are). He also constantly wears his hood (even inside his house) and is... more>> basically incapable of human interaction. I normally take people calling something "edgy" as an endors**ent, but this is seriously excessive. A few more examples to show what I mean:

Spoiler

elves are conceived as 15 years old, because obviously MC is too cool to be a child or possess a dead body. He's poor, but uses gold coins as weapons (despite tons of better projectiles around). He's pretending to be neutral because being seen as evil is dangerous, but first thing he does when settling down is threaten all the villages and then open a portal to the abyss without even cleaning up contamination. When meeting a noble, he does it in front of a tied up experimental subject whose skull is open and is moaning in agony, literally a chapter after half a chapter was spend explaining how he wants to be seen as neutral.

[collapse]

The other big problem is word-count inflation. It goes into tons of detail about stuff that doesn't matter at all, and lots of stuff that feels like it's changed just for the sake of adding words (2 suns, 3 moons, 6 seasons, 27 hour days, 9 day weeks, etc.). That wouldn't be that bad, except it doesn't explain a bunch of stuff that actually matters. What spells does he know? Whatever is convenient of course. How does one level up? However is convenient! A few of the varied ways he's leveled up so far:
Spoiler

killing goblins, unspecified while traveling, enjoying a night stroll, running away from a fight, contemplating life...

[collapse]

There are plenty of holes in the setting itself too. Overall, it's not like it's totally unreadable... but it's nowhere close to some other evil MC novels. <<less

It's not the worst story out there -- if you like stories where a mage learns magic and rises to power, there'll be aspects of this you'll enoy. But. This story is just too edgy, to the point where you can see the author's hand and it ruins suspension of disbelief. The MC is also a complete r*tard.

He constantly does s*upid things that contradict his goals and he spends most of his time looking down on everyone around him when he's nothing special himself. You get many situations where the... more>> author tries to show how smart and rational the MC is but his actions contradict it.

Spoiler

In one scene, a prince's forces attack a city that's protecting a naive princess (which the MC ends up helping defend). The city is overrun. Somehow, it's considered perfectly reasonable for the prince's forces to ens*ave or slaughter the 200, 000 citizens of HIS OWN COUNTRY who live there.

In another scene, the MC has just built a mage tower in a new region. He's worried about being seen as a member of the evil camp. So... what does he do when he gets a visit from a member of the most powerful, well-connected noble family that rules his territory? He treats her like sh*t and leaves a victim of his human experimentation whimpering and groaning on a table behind him WITH THEIR BRAIN EXPOSED. The f*ck?

This story just tries to be edgy to the point where it gets s*upid and doesn't make sense. It becomes obvious that the author is basically just going "look, look how evil my MC and these other characters are"

[collapse]

Could be worse but it's not my cup of tea. <<less

"Indeed, this bread is unique and very aromatic."

Punk was sitting on a chair in front of an old long dining table. He used a knife to cut a large bread into almost equal squares on his plate.

---- Eating bread with fork and knife lmao BREAD... Do Chinese eat bread with chopsticks? -----

When Punk used his peripheral vision to observe Kane, Kane was messily cutting a loaf of bread on his plate into crumbs. Punk couldn't help but wonder how there was such a huge difference in behavior between the father and the son.

After more thorough observation, Punk also discovered that although Kane was cutting his bread very fast and ruthlessly, surprisingly, he did not touch the plate at the bottom. There was also no sound during the process.

"Now I just have to wait and see what kind of play this father and son will perform next!"
While thinking this, Punk quietly used a secondary poison test before putting a cube of the bread into his mouth. Only a cautious wizard could live a long life. So Punk had always been extra careful. But someone discovered this action of his, Punk noticed, when he was inspecting the bread crumbs, Kane's action paused for few moments. Obviously, Kane noticed his "little move."

But Punk just kept eating like he did nothing. The bread had a muddy test of wheat mixed with a sweet fragrance that filled his whole mouth. Although the bread's taste was not that good, it had a very sweet smell, and the refined grains quickly melted inside Punk's mouth and became glutinous wheat syrup that soothed his mouth like a tongue massager. Punk had to admit that a large part of his appreciation for this bread was not just empty politeness.

---- At first, I was already suspicious that the author was quite concerned with the word count, but after this paragraph I'm sure. This paragraph made me drop this wn. ----

Since the bread was very delicious, Punk simply ignored Kane, who had stopped making crumbs, and the Baron, who was sitting upright. He cut another piece of bread, put it in his mouth, and then concentrated on enjoying the taste. The environment on the table became awkwardly silent.

After some time, Punk used a standard noble dining etiquette to finish his bread's last slice. At this point, Kane was so bored that he started to carve a small statue of a squirrel from the remaining half of his bread.

The Baron patiently waited until Punk ate all his food and finally asked without any haste,

"Does honored Mage want to go to the City of Konola? It is the nearest city from here, but there is a large wasteland between my territory and Konola City!"

"Yes, I heard the food there is quite extraordinary. I wanted to go there for a long time and enjoy some for a long time. But I didn't expect to taste such a delicious meal here (delicious meal? It's just bread!!!). Now I am more looking forward to going to Konola City."

I've never seen so much bullsh*t in a novel that tries to take itself seriously.

Why 2 stars? because I only managed to read 10 chapters, it will get better, which I highly doubt.

You will definetly love this novel if you like emotionless, ruthless and calculative MC.

Punk (MC) is a loner and doesn't cares about anyone, his only goal is to become powerful and for that he will do anything.

You wouldn't get bored through out the novel because the story is very interesting.

... more>> The only reason why I gave it a 4 star is because the ending was not good in my perspective. (The story ends very abruptly and many things remain unexplained)

If you want to know the power levels and why the ending sucks then read the spoiler

Spoiler

There are a total of 100 Power levels

1~4 level is Apprentice level

5~9 level is trainee level

10~14 level is Official level

15~19 level is Master level

20~39 level is Legendary realm. (Equivalent to demigod)

40~49 level is Morningstar realm (Equivalent to low god)

50~59 level is Brightmoon realm/Huiye (Equivalent to Base god)

60~69 level is Brilliant Sun realm/Yaori (Equivalent to High God)

70~79 level is Divine throne realm

80~89 level is Transcending Universe realm

90~99 is Void realm

Beyond level 99 is unknown

Now the era in which the story is set, there is no one beyond the Brilliant sun level and so the story ends when Punk reaches level 63.

The author left the remaining story to the imagination of the readers because he couldn't think of a way for Punk to defeat Destiny.... after all the author made Destiny too powerful and mysterious.
