A great war raged between cultivators a hundred thousand years ago. Immortals fell by the tens of thousands, the path of cultivation itself was severed, and after the dust settled, tombs forested the world.

A hundred thousand years after the last legend faded, Lu Yun, commandant of tomb raiders, descends upon the world. Armed with the Tome of Life and Death, he has some burning questions to answer.

……

“This isn’t how you raid a tomb!” Lu Yun smirked at the cultivators frantically scurrying about the ancient tomb. “Do you want me to teach you?”

……

But ah, can someone teach him how to cure his new body’s erectile dysfunction?

This is a story about a true mastermind by the name of Ge Long. Mind you, most of the time you're following the story from the viewpoint of his 'master' Lu Yun. He goes on adventures (mostly tomb related) and gets himself in all sorts of trouble leaving it up to Ge Long to save the day. But who or what is Ge Long? What is he plotting? Is he just bidding his time? Does he really acknowledge Lu Yun as his master?

The story adds a unique take to the... more>> standard cultivation trope in the form of feng shui. Luckily the author (and even more the translator) take the time to explain what's going on. This gives us something new and interesting to look forward to in this genre we have grown to love.

As for the story itself, it's well written and the characters have quite some depth to them. The tone is mostly serious, yet still with a lot of humour even going as far as gags. There is a great deal of intrigue while maintaining a fast pace. However sometimes it can feel a bit overly complicated with deception upon deception and plot beneath plot. But if you don't mind doing a bit of thinking while you read, this is the story for you. <<less

Love this novel! The author does a good job in convincing how typical cliches are used in the novel. I never thought feng shui could be interpreted in a cool way until I read this novel. A big shoutout to the translator who is head over heels for the novel who gives ample help in understanding NECRO in a more profound way. A must read if you are looking for a atypical Xianxia novel, a funny and scary story without any fillers!

As of 213 chapters into this novel, it is by far the novel I most look forward to reading everyday. There is always a new exciting plot development,

The twists and turns as the world unravels around us provide plenty of great discussions down in the comments trying to guess what could happen next.

It may have many tropes of the Xianxia genre but it definitely does so with its own twist, the author has put a lot of care and thought into his world building reaching into all aspects of... more>> Chinese Mythology with a really interesting look into Feng Shui. This paired alongside an amazing and passionate translator means this is a novel that can't be beat.

So don't miss out on an exciting adventure, jump in and binge read so you can catch up you to the rest of us. The novel only gets better and better. <<less

After SOTR, I thought it'd take months before I found another great novel... and OUT OF NOWHERE comes Necropolis Immortal.

A unique storyline delves into the world of Feng shui and necromancy, two seemingly opposing ideas, and finds an intriguing way to connect the two in a martial world of immortals, spirits, and the undead. The clever and artistic design of the characters sets the novel far apart from other popular wuxia. The ever-evolving storyline leaves no room for filler, with each chapter filled with chair-gripping action. With such a complex... more>> storyline, Necropolis Immortal still finds space to add in comedy and character building.

Only 100 chapters in and I'm already hooked. I can't wait to see just what else Necropolis Immortal has to offer! <<less

Interesting word and premise, but the writing is a mess. It just feels as if the novel is a moving train and I had to jump onto it -- there really is no set-up, everything happens in your face.

E: I've give this a second try and it is definitely worth it. The author is improving drastically, the pieces start to click and if you preserve for the first few hundred chapters, you will get a very interesting and unique novel experience.

I really like the Shen Fui interactions and grave exploration experiences, the balancing of the MC obviously OP abilities and the "big story"; everything is connected, the villains make sense. I really did not expect this to be good.

4* takes work to get into, but is rewarding afterwards

Bonus: Ge Long is clearly the best char <<less

It is a great novel, many have given a bad rating by reading only a few chapters and I agree that the starting is a little complicated as it is not your usual web novel genre and many terms would be new and the scheme is complicated but after the first 100 chapter everything fits perfectly well also the translator has tried to explain in the thoughts section pretty well. The translator and his teams have done a great job.

In the end, I would say just try to be positive... more>> and not take the negative review of here as being literal and you would have a great novel to your library. <<less

It was one of the cultivation novels that interested me the most, but unfortunately the author used the same s*upid joke so much that it was irritating.

The female protagonist is literally just a joke, she likes the protagonist and he likes her, but for some silly reason she always disguises herself as a man and never advances in the relationship, and so the author makes his protagonist joke think, "I feel attracted to 'him', am I turning gay?".

And that seems to go on for over 500 chapters, the story is... more>> interesting but it's so recurrent that it made me drop it. <<less

For those of you who think this is about a Necromancer, it's not. Necropolis is like Metropolis, i.e. A world full of tombs. And this is where the story becomes very interesting and unique. Rather than the typical cultivator novel, it's less about the cultivation and more about tomb raiding.

If you like cultivation novels and want something the same but also a little different this is for you.

It's got OPness.

... more>> It's got leveling up.

It's got cool gear.

It's got the love interest.

It's got over the top things happening (but still make sense).

It feels well balanced (for an OP novel).

For those complaining about a confusing story line, all I can say is that maybe they didn't read far enough. I've read plenty of novels where I felt lost in the plot, this one wasn't one of them. <<less

I've read 103 chapters of the story so far as a reference.
I would say that the story is good and I recommend it to anyone interested in Chinese fantasy novels. This story is definitely one of the better ones I've read. I've probably tried reading about 30 Chinese novels at this point and I only kept up with 10 of them due to the remaining 20 not being that interesting. I would say this story makes it around the 10th placemark. I think it is interesting enough to keep... more>> reading, but it isn't necessarily my cup of tea so I don't find it as my favorite story or anything like that.
The story itself is wound fairly well. What I mean by that is that things are connected and there aren't throw away side characters generally.
The main character is a cool guy and while I would prefer a few changes in his actions, he is overall a good MC.
The story contains a lot of terms that I had never heard of before I started, and that might be a turnoff for some people, but those with a curious mind should be fine. <<less

This is an amazing read. Compared to many of the other Xianxia, this one is a breath of fresh air. It's a fast paced story that hardly gives any room for a breather if you are binging it. It involves a lot feng shui stuff, ie., traditional Chinese layout designing but it involves it in the story in a way where it is understandable. It might catch some people off guard but it's a really fun read and it is a great learning experience in case you wanna get a sense of feng shui but are not really intrested in mastering it... Would 100% recommend it. Definitely worth your time!

The MC, Lu Yun, tells you at the very beginning what he is and what to expect from the novel. He is a tomb raider, devoting his life to raiding tombs and recovering lost history. This is not only how he lived on Earth, but also how he lives after reincarnating.

There will be action, but do not expect it to be the novel's focus. The author has a very rich world, but Lu Yun has to gradually dig it out; every arc is centered around a tomb raid as Lu... more>> Yun discovers answers but even more questions about the world he is in.

The actual tomb raiding is usually centered around Lu Yun's Tome of Life and Death and arts of Feng Shui. However, while he has broad knowledge of feng shui, Lu Yun does not have depth; the tombs were set up with much more skill than he has at he start of the novel. We are constantly exploring through Lu Yun's perspective. The tombs are an unknown to him; and the history he buries is equally unknown.

Personally, I'm a sucker for coming-of-age stories and rich worldbuilding, so this series gives me exactly what I want from a WN. I'm 800 chapters in and still completely hooked!

PS: There is a huge cast to remember, so I recommend reading consistently (or even binging) if possible. You can follow the series without remembering everyone - Etvolare usually adds small notes refreshing who particular characters are and people will often discuss them in the comments - but the more you remember yourself, the more it adds to the experience.

The series is dense. The second-densest WN after Kingdom's Bloodline for me. I read a couple hundred chapters this week, and I can see from the chapter comments that I sometimes remember details others have forgotten because it has been so long for them. <<less

Those negative reviews are of people who are either impatient or new reader.

With that out of the way, proper review time:

The plot is based on an apocalyptic world, it's a dystopia. The reason the cultivation level and everything is so confusing is because of the above reason. The World building is so beautifully written and no side character is ever forgotten. The novel does require some patience but it pays out in the end.

All in all the more you read this novel, the more satisfaction you will receive from it.

This novel does not do cultivate and chill. Itll do 100 chapters for a week then let 6 months pass in a sentence.

Eventhough its harem by definition, as in MC has a lot of women subordinates, dude is pretty monogamous in nature.

I'm not a big fan of undead stuff, and thematically it is very much about undead so it's to be expected that I'm not too into that part of it. It could still use some diversity in mob type.

The power levels being a mess is kind of the point.... more>> Dont let that get in the way, it's going somewhere with it.

No novel is perfect, especially a web novel. This is a great addition to the xianxia space if you can manage the pacing. Enjoy. <<less

Three stars for this story. It's quite good, two points ruin the story though.

  • Misunderstanding with the love interest is really badly writing. After he met her there are misunderstandings in every chapter which are disturbing the reading flow. She is disguised as man but he would even ignore that she's a woman if she stood before him with out a disguise. (minus one star)
  • Not so bad but story repeats itself. He rides a tomb then he rides a tomb and again and again... (minus one star)

Quite an interesting novel, the start seems quite slow and there is a lot of info to digest, the story has a bit of slow development on the MC part especially tho he has grown quite a bit since the start of the novel, I like how the tomb raiding is interesting and not as boring as the one from Tomb Raider King, Overall, the novel is quite interesting, just isn't 5 stars due to the author jumping between various plot parts and too much stuff on the first few... more>> hundred chapters making it quite messy. <<less

Having read other cultivation novels, this novel starts out with drowning you with the tomb raiding and all the 'mysterious world building that cause the mess' without answers.' Within the first 250 chapters it tries to establish some super high mysteries and characters of which are important/'critical' to MC's team which in return really hinders the usual novels and how they introduce the story to the reader. I almost quit reading as it was so hard to follow with the author bouncing in just the first few tomb raiding, adding... more>> to plot twists by higher realms that threw a wrench into making things difficult, to going back into random enemies jumping into the current story, to then jumble in the mix between cultivation and formation, overall, you have no space to breath when it comes to expanding the world without settling down first.

It only gets settled in after chapter 250-300 ish, when the MC finally is aware of his surrounding and starts to build relationships with the people outside of the tomb, which makes it easier to digest. Once you get past this 250 chapters worth of info. Hurdle and the first big Tomb raiding arc, you can then start to appreciate the development of the MC, the growth, and the conflict between Sects/MC and villains.

Unraveling some of the established timeline, which lead to how the current era is shown is well worth waiting, but it does get pretty confusing. There is more to unpack, and look forward to once you know the pace of the story isn't just within the tomb and raiding non-stop, and there is actual civilization and down-time. Be patient. <<less

Definitely one of the novel in my top 10 list. Warning, this novel is not for those that don't like to think or remembering things in long term. Unlike other novels where the plot or mysteries are easily unraveled or explained in 2-3 chapters, this novels give you pieces of information like jigsaw puzzles, and the conclusion will be different each time new information is given. There's plot twist inside plot twist, and you may be confused if you didn't take note of the events.

Let me list all the bad... more>> things first:

    1. Confusing cultivation realm. I personally need to see the chart of the cultivation realm occasionally because I often mixed em up, especially in immortal realm..
    1. Never ending enemies. You want to keep your position? Gonna scheme you to death. You have this treasure? Give or kill. You provoke this young master? How dare! Kill! You taking a walk? KILL. Almost every action that MC take will make enemies.. Fortunately I'm already numb to this, but it's still kinda annoying.
Now for the good things:

    1. MC is really an expert at what he's good at, raiding tombs and feng shui. Though I don't understand 100% of the term when MC is explaining, it's still interesting watching him decipher the formations and traps one by one with proper steps rather than brute force them all.
    1. The thrill. The author is very good at describing monsters, ghosts, and the situation. Plus with the good translation, it felt like that I'm right besides MC, experiencing what he's experienced.
    1. Fearless and smart MC. MC knows when to hold back, strategise, and holding his trump cards, but when he truly provoked and gets tired of it, he gonna kill and offend everyone. He's gonna go all out to kill his enemies and befriend those that treat him kindly.
    1. Comedy. Nuff said.
    1. Plot. I personally like the plot. It's basically the usual "A higher world beyond this world" kind of plot, but the information is fragmented, and the MC have to piece them all one by one to unravel the mysteries.
For the Neutral things:

    1. The love interest. I'm conflicted whether I like this or not. One of the MC love interest is cross dressing as a male, even the MC doesn't know that he's actually a she. MC occasionally saw her true form, but she's always brushed her off as another family member. The bad thing is that it almost doomed MC when they're in a certain illusion trap because MC see him as a girl, and she still doesn't admit her real identity. It's also a little frustrating whenever she's about to remove her disguise, but then MC does something that cancel her decision. The good thing is that it's pretty funny watching the banter between MC and her as male friend, not knowing her real identity as a girl.
    1. Fast cultivation speed. Cultivation is just like a requirement for MC to unlock more abilities and using treasures. For most of the time MC just suddenly level up whenever he have enough energy, without any difficulty. I personally like this because the cultivation is kinda doesn't matter at low level in this world, at least inside the tomb, where even the immortals could die because of the traps and formations.
    1. MC gaining knowledge of every professions and their treasures from the dead people. Whenever MC breaking into the tomb, he sometime will make the peerless cultivators from the past into his army, gaining their knowledge and treasures in the process. Of course MC also need time, training, and hardwork to transform all that knowledges to practical experience. Also when MC killed his enemies, they gonna be added to his army as cannon fodders and also could possess their knowledges and treasures.
    1. Harem. I personally like this~ Almost every important characters in MC's army is females and everyone is peerless immortal and beauty from the past. I don't know whether they gonna be love interest in the future, but it surely funny seeing that MC always added female to his key army whether intentionally or not.

Very unique and interesting so far.

This is a cultivation story, but it feels like a very non-standard one.

The spread of cultivation realms is perhaps the most broad of any cultivation story I've ever read. Nascent Soul cultivators are practically never portrayed as weak or low-level early on in a story, but here they're basically unworthy of mention almost right from the start.

So-called 'immortals' become ludicrously commonplace very early on. I'm not sure if they're literally unaging or if the person who named the realms just likes hyperbole- but if that... more>> particular benefit were true, it would make much more sense, as approximately half the cultivation realms that have been mentioned include the word 'Immortal'.

This story focuses a lot on Feng Shui, the undead and tomb raiding. This is really the selling point of the novel and what makes it unique. As someone who's read a lot of disappointingly-samey cultivation stories, it comes as a breath of fresh air, tapping into an element of Chinese culture I almost never see mentioned (It's probably not representative of actual Chinese lore, but it's still intriguing to me).

There are a surprisingly large number of attractive females popping up around the protagonist. One of my least favorite genres are what I term 'pseudo harems', stories where the protagonist is surrounded by women but there are no actual relationships occurring, thus squandering the entire point of a harem. If this story properly gets the harem moving along (it most definitely has the potential for it as many women are interested in him), then I will likely bump this up from a 4/5 to a 5/5 star rating.

The translator, Etvolare, has read over 1000 chapters of this in Chinese (iirc) and still seems quite enthusiastic about translating it. It's still quite interesting to me so far and I look forward to more.

In regards to the state of affairs in the setting, the protagonist seems to be approximately as confused as we are.

There are a lot of complaints about the story being confusing, which is true- the pace feels a little insane, but you can't argue that they aren't keeping things happening! :D <<less

While some may find feng shui and the tomb raiding a turn of this is what makes it unique to other stories.

Then there's the pace of the story. The story is very fast-paced. MC is constantly being faced with dangerous enemies and adventures.

The cultivation of the MC progresses very fast but his friends are not left behind in cultivation. The MC is not the only super genius of the story. All the achievements are not for the MCs to take. Other characters also play a vital role and their achievements... more>> are noteworthy and are recognized. <<less
