Personally it couldn't convince me.

Actually first, I was pleasantly surprised. Although I didn't know where the story was going and I didn't felt connected to the main leads yet, Nan Chan was surprisingly easy to binge-read, with several interesting side stories. Maybe for the first two thirds or so I made fast progress and breezed through the chapters. But after that I lost interest gradually.

First, the main leads stay quite one-dimensional. Cang Ji was somewhat interesting and fun at the very beginning and created some tension with his constant graving... more>> for the MC. The MC at the beginning was rather boring, but I expected him to get interesting when we later would get to know his backstory, as everyone promised. But for me personally, it didn't work. This dude is just boring. He is mainly unemotional, somewhat naive and childlike, maybe idealistic and that's it. He's also supposed to have caught feelings for the ML but don't ask me how that worked. It's barely noticeable since Cang Ji is always the one taking the initiative anyways.

Cang Ji also gets super obnoxious as soon as he gets to learn about his past. He's just a jerk. I could also understand immediately why people warned that the romantic build-up wasn't done well.

Spoiler

It's the typical MC gets drugged, ML r*pes him, MC doesn't remember anything, ML making fun of it. Cang Ji also always tries to convince the MC that he's the best for him, that he can only trust him etc. While treating him like a little child. It honestly reads super manipulative and creepy.

[collapse]

I'm not even overly sensitive about issues like this, BL is not meant to represent reality and stuff, but that was just lame. There was so much potential, you could have made so much out of this premise, but that was just.. Lame.

Idk towards the end I just didn't care about this couple at all. The plot also just confused me more and more, there were side characters randomly appearing and randomly disappearing all the time, although I admit I'm super bad at remembering names and following complex plots, so that might be partly on me. I also admit I probably missed many references and cleverly implemented elements because I'm not too familiar with Chinese culture, so I'm sure the plot was very well made and I just didn't get many things. That's why I'm not pulling off any stars for this part.

Overall for me, my interest in a story rises and falls with my interest in the main leads and in this case, they didn't work for me unfortunately. The beginning was still fun for the most part, and I'm sure the plot was well made as well, so that's three stars from me. <<less

mc: jing lin

ml: cang ji

summary ... more>>
Spoiler

starts with a flashback of MC killing his father and then getting killed himself, but we learn that he in fact didn't die. He's now an amnesic recluse living with a sentient stone figure and brocade carp - the ML - in the mountains hidden from the secular world. They finally descend the mountain when MC loses his copper bell which has powerful properties, and the copper bell leads them through a series of mysteries throughout the land of zhongdu. The cases start off as civilian mu*ders and kidnappings, but then begin to involve the gods and demons. As it turns out, the copper bell was intentially leading MC through the '8 sufferings in life' which at the end unlocks his memories of the events that lead to his death. Many of the people closest to MC were all scheming in their own way for their own gains, and unfortunately MC, ml, and millions of innocent civilians were part of the casualties. 1400 years after the fact and justice is finally brought to those that were wronged.

thoughts

nanchan is devastatingly beautiful. The tragic love story between jing lin and cang ji absolutely killed me. The way jing lin fell in love so resolutely despite being brought into existance as a cold and heartless weapon of war? The way he became so traumatized after that love was ripped out of his chest by the ones closest to him? The way he had to cast away all emotions and desires that makes him him into a stone body double so he could continue to cultivate? And the way he fell in love a second time despite not remembering a single thing of the past, but that love is engraved in his bones and they both just knew? Devastating. I absolutely love their little actions at the beginning of the story that seem so intimate but neither thought of it that way, because they may not remember but their bodies remember.

Spoiler

and the one thing that makes me gravitate to this story is the imagery it inspires. Lots of poetic and grandiose prose, and lots of buddhist, taoist, and folk religion iconology. It reads as if I was watching an ancient chinese classic play out in my head; the worldbuilding is vast, the gods and demons aplenty, and the way the characters do things that are unreasonable by normal standards but makes sense in the context that they are gods (ie; dragging a whole ass city on the back of a painted bull, toppling a whole ass mountain upside down, just to name a few).

also, final reveal gave me whiplash because the amount of red herrings the author threw at us in the final 10 chapters was just insane. We go from yun sheng taking post as the new leader and acting as the BOSS to li rong coming from the underside with his own hidden motives to the freakin BUDDHA himself revealed as the final frontier. That one came out of the left field but the way it was presented was great. We had a typical villain speech at the end that cleared up all the loose ends which was cheap but kinda needed lol. There was simply a lot crammed in the end including how both of them survived, information about jing lin's mother, lord jiutian's motivations, closure for blood sea, etc. Personally wish it was more spaced out.

also I personally felt that the first half of the novel was slow. It reads like a series of independent vignettes that are only loosely joined together, and some of them dont really have a satisfactory conclusion. In fact, some dont have any conclusion at all and was simply brushed aside for keep the main story going. Not a big fan of that set up. But the story kicks up a notch during the flashback arc and it only goes up from there.

side character appreciation:

jiutian - he had the creepiest most weirdest vibes in the entire story. Even as sect leader, you could always tell that his countenance was fake and is an incredibly manipulative actor. I absolute love the plot twist in the end tho. The fact that he was buddha's other half, the half that succumbed to desires and had to be cast away, but still managed to thrive and cause so much chaos in the world that the og buddha wanted to kill him but failed? Top tier. The whole 'black eye' 'grey eye' fighting for control over the body thing was so well done I had shivers when reading.

li rong - the hardest character for me to understand even after finishing the novel. He was jing lin's closest brother and seemed to genuinely care for him, and maybe he did in the past, but over the 1400 year time skip that brotherhood had long worn away and what was left was a tenacious killing machine. Of all the brothers he was the one that acts alone with no kin nor friends, which makes his motivations all the more unclear. We know he hates his father and has long wanted to kill him, and perhaps that obsession soured any love towards jing lin and steeled his resolve to use him as the blade. Unlike yun sheng, I dont think he wanted power so much as he wanted revenge, because in the end he gave up his powers to become mortal once again.

dong jun - my fav side character he is so unbothered and sexy and just doing what he wants despite the world falling apart. He always gave the impression that he knew too much, and I was kinda surprised how he was privy to the copper bell as well. Really wish he had more screentime.

favourite scenes and quotes:

There's a man I love. Jing Lin strained to say to himself. In the clouds. In the sea. In my heart.

""What do you see?" "A mountain of corpses amidst a sea of blood" "Why have you come?" "To kill" - opening scene, incredibly epic, and I love how it made a reappearance near the end.

"I can leave all the vulnerable parts of my chest and abdomen to him, and offer him the protection of my tough armor of solid scales so that he let all his childishness and naivety out in the open without fear."

"If you are the lotus pond's lotus, I can be the lotus pond's fish"

the scene during the final fight where jing lin lands on the water and cang ji was starting to evolve into a dragon. Very lovely imagery.

thank you for giving me another wonderful story to read, again and again and again.

At first I was confused about the flow of the story, and was utterly dumbfounded at how that silly fish wanted to devour Jing Lin, but who would have thought their story, their pain, suffering, their hardships, their "Mother to Gege" relationship, their reunion will make me shed tears like I haven't cried while reading a story before. 🤦🤭🤣 Aish! Enough with the "spoilers", thank you, Author San and translator San. 🤭 PS: YOU must Read this Novel, cause you will enjoy reading it, too. 🎏

Easily made one of the top 3 fantasy BL novels in my list. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. A large part of this is due to Lianyin's excellent translation, making the story so seamless. There are some tragic moments with angst but I am hopeful of that HE as stated in the synopsis. If you enjoy stories like Heaven's Official Blessing about cultivation and immortality, then this novel is right up your alley.

It took me two years to recognize the true worth of this novel. It's not like what I had expected at all, and I realized that I need to revise so much of what I once said. I was unbelievably immature from the freshness of the whole danmei webnovel world and jumped the gun when it came to making sweeping generalizations of the whole story based on previous novels and the little I'd read.

And it shouldn't even be me giving the novel another chance- no, it was the novel letting... more>> me make new judgements and bringing me on a journey that I never could've fathomed had I just been shut in my rigid views on how characters should behave and how plot should progress. I cannot amend the 3 star rating I've left on this novel but it didn't feel right to leave this review here when my thoughts on this piece have diverged so drastically from the original.

I've been awed a few times, by the ambition of the author to tie something as complex and universal such as suffering into a simple story. The warm and bold intimacy I had so scathingly scorned now generously shows how much love can matter in the face of life's bitterness, and how astringent it can be when snuffed.

Whereas before, I nitpicked on the small details and thoughtlessly slapped the label of "bad" on Nan Chan when existing ideas and settings didn't conform to my expectations, I see now that there is so much more to be gleaned from the thrill of being carried along by the read. I am relieved from being critical and allowed to enjoy the story and enjoy myself. <<less

My only regret is not reading this early. Man! You gotta try this and read this until the very end to appreciate the story. It unfolds beautifully and answers all the questions you might have in mind.

The tragedy tag? Oh yeah, it's there for a reason, my heart breaks with the 8 suffering arcs! ugh! BUT don't get me wrong it's a HE!!! yay!

First, let's talk about Can Ji.

Spoiler

Who the heck is hating on his character? I mean, why? He's arrogant and imposing for a reason. He's one of the mythical creature- and the strongest one that is, who could devour heaven and earth, who never bowed down to anyone. He's a demon and a dijun afterall. He's a perfect discription of that mythical creature to a T.

[collapse]

He's a very doting partner and loves our Jing Lin a lot. Although he's very possessive of him and from time to time goes overboard with the teasing, our MC is very understanding and would let Can Ji to get away with it. *wink*

And Jing Li, aweeee! Poor guy, he's been used and brainwashed by the so called "father".

Spoiler

My heart breaks when he was confined in the sarcophagus, he's trying to remember everything and keeps calling his beloved. "... take me home... gege" my poor dear heart! I cried so much.

[collapse]

Of course my fave characters, the little stone figure, kyahhhh! so adorable! Fu Li, Qianyu, Huashang, Fei Lou and Dong Jun. I also like Li Rong for some reason and Shuran!

The wedding day, lmao! I roared with laughter and clapped my hands like Dong Jun! It's hilarious. Overall, this is highly recommended! Please give it a shot! <<less

This is a sweet, beautiful story.

From the very beginning, the literary style, the buddhism references, the facets of humanity and their 8 sufferings, the descriptions of characters and their development, the message it tries to convey - everything is so wonderfully written!

We start with seeing Jing Lin commit a most heinous crime - reason currently unknown - and then presumably die following the backlash of it. Nearly 500 years later, he is still recupperating after that battle and living in relative peace and seclusion on a mountain top, raising a... more>> small brocade carp. This brocade carp is a very unusual demon, highly ambitious and voracious in devouring spiritual energy so that it can evolve - and it goes from a tiny fish, to a small child to a young teen in a few short weeks!

And that's when the story starts. Sudddenly pulled into a series of cases, connected by a common thread, Jing Lin and Cang Ji travel across the Zhongdu searching for answers. At the same time, both their pasts begin to catch up with them, and they find themselves linked at multiple levels.

The dynamic here is very interesting to see. Jing Lin begins the story as an unfeeling and cold immortal, only to slowly begin thawing due to Cang Ji's utter disregard for human-like propriety and his possessiveness towards Jing Lin. He is a demon, after all, and the author doesn't shy away from portraying him with those qualities - cunning and devious and all.

Their banter is engaging, their teamwork suspiciously flawless, but their relationship is a little ambiguous. They aren't quite friends, but they are mutually dependant on each other. Of course, once the past starts coming into the picture, Cang Ji's ignorance about the world of humans gets an immediate update, finally piecing clues together about the affinity between him and Jing Lin.

Tang Jiuqing is talented, truly! By the end of the story, every single loose thread was tied off skillfully, all questions satisfactorily answered. This story touches on some very high levels of philosophy towards the end, which may be a little confusing, but it is a very smooth finish nonetheless.

Huge thanks to the translator as well, who has done a wonderful job!!

I'd heard raving reviews and was really excited to read this. The two-three cases they got involved in were interesting even as standalones (please read the TWs beforehand). The flashback arc was great too. The author did a good job of highlighting moral dilemmas and grey areas throughout. The translation is also wonderful!

That said, I cant help but think the writing wasn't very fluid. Some parts, I found, draggy and the last book was probably my least favorite. I wouldn't call this a tear jerker (except one part) but you... more>> do pity the ones involved.

In short, its good but not as spectacular as I was led to believe. 4ish. <<less

4.5/5 A somewhat mystery novel where you journey together with the MC as he slowly uncovers his past and rediscovers his lost love and... his back story.

The novel mainly focuses on the journey rather than the romance imo. It got a little draggy for me around halfway through, but I could tell the author was trying to build on something so I pressed on and didn't regret it. I really really love MC's back story (flashback) and would urge anyone reading it to at least read till that part (around... more>> 3/4 in?) because it was a little bittersweet yet cute. The mystery of the conspiracy etc was revealed and resolved pretty properly so I'm quite happy with it overall. Half star off only for the mild draggy part near the middle but forgivable for the sake of building on the plot!

Really appreciate that the translator puts T/N for character's title-name as well because you usually forget by the time these names reappear HAHAHA. Pretty well translated, good quality! <<less

Going to admit I waited for the translation before reading. And it was worth it. That was good quality translation, very grateful and thankful to the translator!

This was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and plot. I thought it was going to be case based on the 8 sufferings with like an over arching plot detailing MC's past. It kind of is but kind of not. It's just one big case, really. Maybe the first 2 cases can be counted as 2 cases, the rest is just one BIG ENTANGLEMENT... more>> then we go tumbling straight into one conspiracy, the big flashback, angst and big finale. What a ride. My heart can't stop pounding.

With well deserving warnings, the book delves into uncomfortable themes. At first I thought, how bad can it be? Well, it's really uncomfortable and looks at the bad side of humanity at certain points. But hey, it's a book looking at the 8 sufferings so not unexpected. Also, the major overarching conspiracy has me angry at several characters and suspicious at several others too. In fact, I wasn't sure of a few characters until the very end.

But also, there were many, and really MANY, good characters that I love to bits.
Spoiler

Unexpected MVP goes to Ah Yi whom I disliked at the beginning but loved at the end. Who's really just a child but had his morals at the right place. I also actually liked the dynamic between Dong Jun and Zui Shan Seng. Also, kind of feel sad for Fei Luo (and his love to cherish beauties yet no one wants him). I almost wished the side characters had their own pairings. Alas, no major side CP in this novel.

[collapse]

Lastly, the romance is almost a slow simmer but gosh it's a hot one. The emotions are just very touching and deep. I loved the dynamic, their story arc and finally, it's a very strong HEA.
Spoiler

I almost want to say Cang ji isn't super wild. I almost thought he was some uncontrollable person by that description but he was indeed more untamable? Due to his demon nature at the beginning and grew up throughout the story. Jing lin did feel cooler in comparison but he was no less unfeeling and their story arc was just very touching.

Dropped a star because this novel is confusing at times due to sudden switch in perspectives mid story. But overall even that is an interesting way the author keeps the plot going

It's super slow burn. Literally because the ML was a koi fish who evolved into a child then suddenly into an adult. It's very rapid for him and he does not understand complex emotions other than the base ones he already as which is to devour and grow.

But slowly he starts to value the MC. You also start to... more>> learn about the MC and appreciate him..

The author has a way of introducing characters randomly but you get attached with them. It's a slowly unraveling story that introduces you to a lot of emotions. A lot of the times it'll leave you sad. That's the beauty in it I guess.

Overall, , , the plot can be confusing at times as the author likes to randomly switch up the perspectives. But the story is pretty good still and all the characters are 3 dimensional. The plot is nicely driven by a single entity just known as the bell and we are slowly learning about our main characters.

The translation is amazing ! I am reading another novel by the same team and it's also pretty good. <<less

There is someone I love. In the clouds, in the sea. In my heart.

Kindly note, there are some themes in this novel which is not suited for all audiences, so please heed the warnings before picking this novel. I've seen people disapprove of those themes, so in case you can't bear to handle such themes, I advise you to close the novel almost immediately and let's live in peace together.

I can't express in simple words how much love this novel needs. I haven't reviewed novels on NU... more>> before but I felt personally some of the reviews didn't really level up to my experience with the novel. Hence I'm here to share my perspective or views of it.

Novel starts with Jing Lin, Lord Linsong, who killed his father and literally dies in front of his brothers. It was the best first chapter ever. Tang Jiuqing really knows how to write a first chapter.

The novel is a little slow paced in the first 60 ish chapters? But it was a really great journey until then.
Spoiler

They solve problems and the concept of witnessing sufferings together was so amazing. Dong Lin's case had the biggest impact on me (along with cangjing's past ofc)

[collapse]

I had even lost interest around the same 60 said chapters. Later the past reveals and the real intwining between the two main character deepens. We get to witness a really saddening past.

Spoiler

Cang Ji, or also known as Cangdi aka Emperor Cang, is the fearsome dragon. He is the ruler of north, and everyone has this impression of him being a very big threat to world's peace. Jing Lin comes to approve of his ideologies and strongly believes in his way of working (which I really adored). Cang Ji's Cao Cang form was so Carp!Ji. Shamless Check! Everything was fun and they even finally end up having an arrangement of wedding (still Jing Lin is unbeknownst to Cao Cang's true identity. Then sh*t goes downwards.

The past was so infuriatingly depressing. I was so heartbroken was an understatement and it was really really painful. I really wanted to go and give CangJing a big hug during that time. That was when I fell for Nan Chan completely with no turning back.

[collapse]

Over and all, the plot really sums up well and I was so in love with the concept of the novel. I still am yet to move on from the feeeeeelllllsssssss the novel gave me. Tang Jiuqing never disappoints. I'm so proud of her. Like Lianyin (translator) 's review goes, Cang Ji alone makes this novel a 10 on 10. With other characters and the magnificent storyline, this novel became a 100.

A must read and truly a very beautiful novel.

Cang Ji: "It's my Jing Lin." It's the Jing Lin I treasure and hold dear in my heart.

Jing Lin: "Gege take me home."

So many flashbacks that I couldn't stand it and skipped a few chapters (especially flashbacks of other people's pasts at the beginning of the book that have absolutely nothing to do with them).

I read it because it was written by the same author as qjj but this is a bit disappointing.

ML didn't understand anything at first and after only dreaming he remembered and and knows everything (from human emotions to how to have s*x, even though at the beginning of the book he really doesn't understand) which is a little... more>> weird.

Loved Qiang Jin Jiu but I wasn't really into this. This is a xuanhuan type of novel, similar to the Netflix dramas, Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Ashes of Love. Probably quite enjoyable if you like xuanhuan.

The pacing was uneven. It was quite draggy in the first two-thirds, and then there were suddenly lots of revelations and plot-twists in the last third. I really liked the idea of the copper bell leading the two main leads through the eight Buddhist sufferings though.

I also had some... more>> issues with the main couple. The pattern of dubcon and possessive behavior was pushing against my comfort zone.

The author is great at building mystery though (although it takes really long to get to the pay-off). I mainly skimmed-read the book just to see if my guesses about the plot were correct. <<less

It was very boring at the beginning, I had to force myself to read it because I didn't have anything else to read. I gave up after 15 chapters, I put it down for few month and picked it up again. But it is good. It's sad and romantic.

I can understand the MC falling in love with ML, MC is unworldly and naive. So the first man that came along and told him, he was beautiful and raised the desire in him, he gave his love. Also ML was the... more>> only one he could trust. Although it is realistic, it is not romantic, author should have spend more time in the third volume of the book to give some depth and dimension to their love. Although author doesn't spend much time justifying how they fall for each other, and it seems too quick and rushed. But after they do fall for each other, it's quiet romantic.

with all said above, it's still a very very good book in this genre. The start is very boring with so many names that you can't remember. You just have to get past that. <<less

Let me sob a little at first **sobing** T~T I'm so sad that it's ended.... I don't want it to end

. It was really wonderful work that I don't know I should say erha is better or Nan chan. Let me collect my tears and give my idea from start.

The first thing I can say is that who ever read reviews before deciding on reading this novel or not. Pls, don't coward away after seeing bad reviews or tragedy tag. I say because after I read erha I was simply... more>> to broken to come near what say to be tragedy plus with all those other painful tags. I was deciding on reading this novel for a month cause I was too scared it leave a big blow on me with the mention of eight suffering however it wasn't like that at all.

This is simply a very sweet, intriguing and mysterious story. The case jing lin and cang ji are following is really complicated and mysterious and I'm sure you feel restless and may even give up on reading cause you can't get the hint of whose the final boss at all. But that's what make you read more and more so it could end soon and when it end you cry and sob wanting to read it again and this time without worry while digesting everything more easily and even finding more obvious clues that you never noticed.

About the characters I should say after Chu wanning and xie lian at the top list of people who suffer the most jing lin come third or maybe second!? (;

`) after all he go through all eight suffering and every one of them was worth than the other one, being part away from the person you love in that way and then cut all emotions and desires

I just want to wail in this agony. My condolence for everyone who will read those parts and don't know how to stop their sobs. *hug*

About cang ji I could only say he is too sweet his every action shows of love even when he didn't know what he is feeling is called love.

Speaking of which, all other side couples and character are fit in story really well it feels like every one of them are main characters and without one of them the whole course of story will change everyone are linked with each other pushing one of them work like domino effecting all others. I should say please, please please don't leave bad review while you didn't finished it till the end you might really get bored and frustrated when you reach ch70 but it's all about patience you should keep reading and see what happened even if you know its heart wrecking you should just keep it up as the process is very important and critical in this novel, one line and you missed everything. If you are tired then just think about when everything will come to light.

This is a well-written novel and full of romance and tragedy. It begins with a mystery and as the reader goes on the same journey with the amnesiac main characters, the plot thickens and the themes become dark and violent.

Using the Eight Sufferings as a plot device, the novel shows how love and desire can be the root of suffering in the world. This novel breaks a lot of taboos and is not shy with its emotional punches to the reader's heart.

There is a happy ending so don't worry. But... more>> if 2ha was too much for some readers, then Nan Chan might not be suitable for readers with delicate sensibilities. The list of warnings on Nan Chan is very deserved. The novel is worth reading though and I'd recommend it. <<less

Oh my god. Oh my god?! Why did I not read this sooner?

The summary does not do this novel justice. Nan Chan is a story of two people finding what it means to be human, what it means to love and to be loved, despite this awful world where you can't escape suffering. Nan Chan is a story about a man who has been told time and time again that he is nothing but a sword finding his heart in a dragon, whose sole weakness is him and him alone.... more>> Nan Chan is a story that will forever linger in your memories, long after the last word has been read, because of how devastatingly beautiful it was.

Admittedly, it's a slow start. Keep reading, because Nan Chan gets better as the story goes on. You'll uncover the mystery behind the MC (Jing Lin) and his relationship to the ML (Cang Jin), you'll feel the pain of the side characters and the suffering they endure, the price of being human. The main CP's relationship starts out fierce, with the ML's possessiveness and the MC's biting humor, but slowly it will melt into something warm and touching.

The peak of this novel emotionally is when you find out the MC's past -

Spoiler

- the MC, the "beloved" son of the Heavenly Father, has been used as a sword for his entire life. The ML is the first to probe deeper into him, to draw out his kindness, his empathy, his love, but also the first to open his eyes to what his "family" may really be doing behind closed doors. By the time the MC finally realizes their true nature, however, it's too late.

The ML is dead.

The MC is locked away, with nothing but the curse of evil spirits and his grief to keep him company for 900 years.

I didn't cry reading 2HA. I didn't even cry when I read Heaven Official's Blessing. But I sobbed my absolute heart out when I read:

"There's a man I love.

In the clouds. In the sea. In my heart." - C101

Words can not DESCRIBE how well this was written. I've always known t97 was a good author (just look at Qiang Jin Jiu) but I was blown away with the intricacy of the plot and how well developed all the characters were. She managed to create a story with so much depth but also didn't keep the romance dry (you can feel the spark from the very beginning). The everlasting love between the MC and the ML, the love that was so strong it could hold through two lifetimes (the second of which neither of them even had their former memories! They didn't even need to remember what had happened to fall in love again, oh my god! My heart!) was just so poetically done. I can not praise her enough.

If I had one criticism, however, I would say that the ending was not entirely to my liking. Was it satisfactory? Yes. Did is tie up all the loose ends? Also yes. But it felt a bit rushed and the plot twist was.... out of place, in my opinion. However, it was a minor thing and definitely didn't detract from the rest of the novel.

Also, quick thank you to the translator! Lianyin has done such a great job - you will not find a more seamless translation anywhere else on this site.

I'm going to remember Nan Chan, perhaps forever. It's beautiful writing will haunt me. 4.5/5.0 stars. <<less
