The first thing Xie Lin An did after becoming the top scholar was to break off our engagement.

At that moment, I was still holding the hangover soup I had prepared for him. Upon hearing his words, I was stunned for a long time, long enough for the rim of the bowl to leave a mark on my hand, long enough for him to frown and softly call out to me:

“Ah-Yang?”

I came back to my senses at his call, then placed the bowl on the table and gently said:

“Okay.”

Later, I left the capital for two years. When I returned and saw him again, I respectfully called him “Cousin,” then walked behind him and grabbed the ear of the young general who had just returned from the battlefield:

“Bo Ji An! I told you not to drink because your wound hasn’t healed. Why are you ignoring the doctor’s orders again!”

Me, slapping the hood of a car: This baby can fit so much mature characterizations.

FL and ML are a super cute power couple, and I like that though the ex is regretful, he isn't bitter and resentful; he's pining, but knows it would've been inappropriate not to let go.

Both FL and her ex recognize that it's neither a crime or a sin to not reciprocate someone's feelings, but you have to live with the consequences of your own choices. I honestly really like this ex for his maturity ... more>>

and wished that one of the extras was him finding someone else, but then the author would probably get complaints that the face slapping wasn't splid enough

Hmm, the intro sounded interesting but the story didn't live up to expectations. The telling of the story was boring and on top of that, the plot was unrealistic. One example, a lady in ancient China wouldn't have as much freedom of choice as the FL had... it's unrealistic that her parents would be accepting of her traveling without adequate protection.

Anyway, the novel isn't something I would recommend to someone who has a preference for realism in fiction.

FL was engaged to her fiancé since childhood. He dumped her and she moved on. She saved ML, an injured general, and he fell in love with her.

They eventually got together. In the meantime, the ex-fiancé started missing FL and wanted to get back together. In the end, he missed out on his chance and lived in regret.

It should be 5 I misclicked! Ughh. Short but sweet 🥹. Regret trope you guys! Ex fiance who doesn't know how to cherish her, FL flew away and caught by the ML. Ex regrets, realized how much he loved FL, but too late😆. Satisfying short read. 👏

Short and sweet (and bittersweet). Did the 2nd ML have it coming? Yes. But that doesn't mean I can't feel bad for him. He was young and dumb and made a mistake, and now he has to live with his choices. Still proud of where he ended up though. He's not a villain, just a man living as best he can with his regrets

This is a straightforward story, no villain nor dog blood drama.

When the fiance of FL (Xue Yang) broken their engagement... this didn't dim her light and thought it's opportunity to grow which lead her to travel, help people, progress in her medical career, met ML (Bo Rong) and reunite with her family.

The relationship of leads was fast-paced (understandable being short novel) and no unnecessary misunderstanding, ML might act jealous to her ex but really super confident of her love. They complement each other and walked same path (Border General x... more>> Doctor).

For Xie Lin Ah (2nd ML), regret might be too late... but I'm glad he chose to hide his regret and not chose villain path. <<less

Incredibly sweet short story. I love the FLs independence and that she chose the right guy.

There weren’t rlly twists and turns just straight up a sweet and fluffy development.

He was indeed wrong to break the engagement with MC but it's also understandable since the engagement was forced to him in the first place. Although in the end, he fell in love with MC... that feeling was covered by the unwillingness of 2nd ML for being controlled by his father all his life. I actually quite agree for him to break the engagement and take a step back first so he and MC could know their own feelings but sadly, MC didn't like him that much and ended up falling in love with ML

The cousin only broke off the engagement because he was trying to rebel against his father, who always forced him to do things. Due to his immaturity, he ended the engagement, although he genuinely loves her. This makes the story bittersweet, as he remains true to her for the rest of his life. It's unknown whether he ever got married, leaving the tale with a lingering sense of bittersweetness.I was almost rooting for the cousin because he was young and immature and didn't have time to process his feelings. It wasn't as if he was ever mean to her; he only avoided her because his scholarly character prevented him from thinking of her in an "adult" way. So yeah, I was rooting for him more so. I know the main male lead is a good guy, and he is extremely good to her. However, he also exhibited some immature behavior but realized his feelings sooner than the cousin did.

The story is short and light hearted. FL and ML relationship was a little cliché but not too bad. I was just laughing when the ex finally realized his feelings, the video of Jojo Siwa dancing to Karma wouldn't stop playing in my head 😭 lmao. I'm docking one star because there's one thing very jarring to me, the story is set in ancient China but the characters behaved more like people living in modern society which was really out of place 😅. But it's just a short story so... more>> I didn't really mind about it too much. <<less

Loved it. Cute, short story. FL and ML both enjoyable to read, even 2ndML was a likeable character.

I always like the regret stories, but what I would have loved more would have been some groveling and then winning the girl back. Maybe I'll get lucky with another story. Haha

It’s not bad. It’s a short story, so don’t expect a lot of details or character developments or really... too much. It’s a good lighthearted story though. Not too deep. No political plots or anything. Purely focused on the romance. It’s fast romance by the way. The time-skip does come out of nowhere, but I’m not gonna complain cause like I said, it’s a short story. FL is a strong character who knows what she wants and can be independent. Her family is loving. ML is like every other ML... more>> out there. A green waving flag with a vinegar jar that gets knocked over. Second ML is someone who only knew that he loved FL after she left. Anyways, it’s a good read for people who don’t want too much dark and deep reads. <<less

8/10 short and sweet book, I'm a sucker for this kind of bittersweet book. Compared to those longer books ofc this book is not very impactful or impressive but it did well for this short length I think it did well. I enjoy reading this
