Qin Chunxiao lives in a world with a soulmate setting called “The Rich Young Master Is Top-Rated.” The book chronicles the emotional entanglement between the wealthy young master and his ex-husband, actor Bai Ming. However, there are no money-making cheats or shortcuts to becoming rich.

Qin Chunxiao, whose hometown’s housing prices exceed 40,000 yuan, remains expressionless: I know this plot may be entertaining, but it won’t make me any money.

As an unnamed bystander in the book, Qin Chunxiao doesn’t adhere to the original storyline. Instead, he diligently focuses on his volleyball career. His goal is to join the men’s volleyball national team before 2024, attend the Paris Olympics to explore the world, and save enough money for a down payment by the age of 30. His aim is to move his family out of their old, dilapidated rental house.

A few years later, he finally went abroad to compete as a member of the national team. However, the plane disintegrated in the air, and the first piece of cabin debris that was about to hit him was blocked by a kind neighbor. The moment the neighbor died, his vision lost its color. Another piece of the plane then sent him away as well.

Opening his eyes again, Qin Chunxiao found himself back seven years ago. At that time, he was in the third year of junior high school, holding the “Three-year High School Examination and Four-year Simulation” in his hand. He looked at the paper with mixed feelings of sadness and joy.

The sad part is that he has to go through the high school entrance examination and the college entrance examination again. The happy part is that if he gets another chance, his volleyball dream may soar even higher.

Qin Chunxiao aspires to become the world’s number one volleyball libero.

Sunny little angel volleyball player Shou x God of Wealth Attack.

I read up to chapter 165 so I was pretty reluctant to drop this novel. The pacing of the story is really good, the volleyball matches are exciting, and I liked the plot. The author worked hard to flesh out side characters, even the competitors from outside of China.

That being said, this story had several very serious issues that made it hard for me to read.

First, the novel made a lot of racist or extremely nationalist comments and jokes. At the beginning, it wasn't so extreme, but it became more... more>> and more frequent halfway through the story.

For example, one of the running gags in the story is a black guy

Spoiler

walking in the dark scaring one of their teammates

[collapse]
.

In general, there was also a lot of black and white weibo style morality. The author frequently stuck in righteous, patronizing asides about right or wrong, or some idealistic method of solving social problems.

Unfortunately, this also infected the romance subplot. The ML was set up as an unrealistically perfect sympathy-bait character, who felt more like the author's chuunibyou ideal than a real person. Like a lot of similar Chinese danmei novels, ML and the plot was used to bash social phenomena the author personally didn't like, without any real understanding or nuance. And of course, to push TCM, nationalism, racism, etc.

These chuunibyou elements increased as the story progressed. For example, MC was portrayed as a character that could

Spoiler

reliably KO other volleyball players, with no consequence because apparently it "wasn't his fault". In real life, this would be extremely dangerous because KO'ing someone without any head protection means concussion, which is a serious life-altering event with permanent physical sequlae, even risking death. Of course, when MC does this on live television, the author doesn't take this into consideration despite their moralizing about so many other things. Because the MC's fighting skills are used to show off how he can't be bullied even though he's "short", he's not just a "weak Asian", the stereotype of "weak Asians" is just racism, MC is manly and sporty even though he's beautiful and cute, etc. Lots of extreme insecurity and of course above is repeated over and over again in asides throughout the story.

[collapse]

Some of these elements run into mythical territory such as

Spoiler

Fu Yiban (?) running into the mafia because he's in Italy and saving his teammates from a shooting.

Their insane language learning skills. MC becomes actually fluent in Russian basically from scratch in one season, while studying for exams and playing volleyball competitively and training.

ML who is 19 years old and has no real business experience other than being an idol takes over a billion dollar business and pushes out his bio dad (owner of said business) and his uncle. He passes the A-Levels, SAT, and gaokao with near perfect scores despite dropping out of highschool at age 15 to become an idol. And he's a master-level chef, and he plays like 6 different instruments, despite spending his childhood lifting refrigerators, amongst other things.

[collapse]

And near the end of the story, the actual magic happens (not really important to the plot / not a big spoiler) and it turns out

Spoiler

MC has some kind of special blood that can be made into a vaccine that will save everyone from coronavirus.

[collapse]

The actual story is good but I could not read 200 chapters of this shitty insane Kuroko no Basket fanfic. <<less

Holy sh*t, how could I've not noticed that this novel has finally had its much-deserved translation???!!

So, I have chased this novel since its release purely with MTL (I'm a fan of the author)...

And all I want to say is to READ THIS!!!

... more>> The Setting:

God, this is such an amazing novel, especially if you were in need of a genuine sports novel. In a nutshell, this is a mature version of Haikyuu!! (as in the conflict and the overall theme of the plot). The title might've misled you at first, the synopses doesn't help either. "My Soulmate is a Libero" sounds like it will be a romance-driven story than the actual sport, but nope! it's quite the opposite. The main focus will always be the MC's volleyball journey while the romance will be much MUCH later in the story (though the main couple did meet early).

A not-so-quick course on the novel's soulmate setting if you want to read more:

Spoiler

In short, there are two types of soulmate pairs and they can be identified by a brain wave scanner. There are dominant soulmates, where both parties will experience total color blindness until they met each other. And there are recessive soulmates, where both parties are pretty much normal humans until met their fated pair. A countdown mark will appear in random places of their bodies and they were not able to talk to each other until said countdown was over. The countdown time varies and will tick down as long as the pair were within a certain range (also varies) of each other. Keep in mind that this type of soulmate will be the one that mainly appears in the novel (tbh, I don't remember there's a soulmate pair with the first type either unless you count that lying b*stard who pretends to be one with ML's lil bro).

One thing the soulmate types share is that anyone one of them will be color-blind if their respective pair died. And keep in mind that being a soulmate doesn't automatically mean it's a romantic thing, which is where a second type grouping of soulmates is based from. Here we separate soulmates into 4 different dynamics: lover-soulmate, family-soulmate, friend-soulmate, and rival-soulmate. There's no exact way to determine this (except for the family ones, cuz y'know... they are most likely siblings) so the pair had to patiently discover their dynamic on their own. So yeah, not all soulmates are better off as each other spouse, there's even a case where a boy-girl soulmate pair were pressured into a relationship by the public and they ends up breaking up.

[collapse]

Also, this story actually has quite a dark undertones in its background, but the author's writing makes it not too domineering as it's supposed to be. Thus the sports theme is still very much present till the end of the story while the other theme is there simply to make the story has much more flavor for us to enjoy and basically adds richness to the world-building and characterization.

The Plot:

In this story, we can see a much more "real life" version of how an athlete's life and journey really was. We see how despite their passion, ambition, and unrelenting efforts, their life as an athlete can be nulled to nothing to a seemingly inconsequential element for us (netizens). For example, bad coaches that you can never remove despite him already ruining your and the rest of your team's career, how simple sets of unsuitable exercise might've makes you a cripple and ruins your career as an athlete forever, and how injuries were inevitable despite your iron body and constant maintenance + exercise (huge preach on the author for this btw, the medical conditions she'd written has always been factual and detailed, which adds to the realness of it). Other than that, there are also many darker elements such as drugs, r*pe, human trafficking, child abuse & neglect, and deaths (yes actual multiple deaths in this novel, not because of the sports itself tho).

... Uh, moving on (I swear, it might've looked angst but no, this is not angst, just trust me when I said the author's writing was just naturally easygoing (?) no matter what topics she covered). On the lighter tones, this novel comedy always serves on point. The comedy was not just simply "characters doing funny things", more often than not, the author makes use of existing backgrounds to make the jokes, just work (sorry, idk how to accurately describe it lol, in short, it's kinda like an inside joke (?) or something similar).

The Characterization:

And the characterization is just *chef kiss*. Not just the main characters, side characters, and even characters that were just mentioned on passing notes have VALUES. They are all 3d and don't move revolving around the MC. All the characters have their own lives, personality, and antics. In addition, it is interesting how we were told about many of the characters' passions besides volleyball, it just adds weight to their character which is great! Furthermore, love how there are many great female characters written by the author. Their personality was not just the usual "kind and caring" or "jealous and petty", they actually have their own drives and unique disposition, and are not losing with the boys in terms of characterization. I'm going to mention some (there WILL be spoilers) :

Spoiler
    • MC's older sister who are talented in many aspects and is a model student, but has a somewhat lazy temperament (lmao, her boyfriend and future husband basically dotes on her and does all the chores except washing her underwear, which she did on her own) yet still strict and wise to her younger brother if the situation needs to be (examples is, reminding MC of essential protection when she gets the news that he and ML were finally together lol)
    • MC's mother mostly does the child-rearing yet she was a mechanic and soon-to-be the owner of her own automotive company (MC's dad is a scientist so he is rarely at home, but when he does he takes care of all of the housework though).
    • MC's mentors, twin sisters who were supposed to be at the forefront of woman's volleyball but unfortunately one of them was diagnosed with cancer, thus technically only one of the sisters was MC's mentor in past lives, but the sick one can be said to be his spiritual mentor. MC inherited her wristband to pass on her unfulfilled will. Btw despite being terminally sick, the woman was a very fun person lol, she was a furry, made her own fursuits (which the ML later commissioned for his 'undercover'), and even writes web novels/fics, like jeez, how much talent did the gurl have XD
    • The mom of one of MC's teammates. She's a medical expert of an investigation team/government body who had been stalked and imprisoned (r*ped) by her stalker but fortunately saved by a policewoman that turned out to be her soulmate. After she sued the hell out of her stalker, she and the policewoman soon marries and decided to raise the unborn baby AKA MC's teammates. Loves dynamic we've peeked on their daily lives.
    • ML's non-biological sister, she's just a sweetheart tbh. Almost cried when she and ML had to eventually parted ways after the truth was out. I'm happy ML & MC found her a suitable happy home not soon after though (you gonna be surprised about who her new family gonna be :)
    • The diving athlete who was confessed with her ugly af photos on huge display in an airship lmao. She has quite a rough past too, but she overcomes it, which will be one of MC's driving forces to keep on fighting in his past life.
[collapse]

All of this combined just makes the world inside the novel more sober yet colorful. And most importantly, side characters (friends & family) WAS STILL RELEVANT AFTER THE MAIN RELATIONSHIP WAS CONFIRMED! That's the thing with many BL novels or romance in general. It's like after the main guys' date, their other relationship, and sometimes even their career was blurred. But not on this, side characters were very much as relevant as they were before. MC's amusing interaction with his teammates was not limited in any way. The competition was still the important thing that had to be focused on. It's like *gasp* even though they are in a relationship, they are still fundamentally 2 different individuals with their own lives!

The Side CPs:

One thing I'd like to mention, this novel has multiple sides cp, though, the thing I love about this is how they never steal the spotlight from our main characters/not a vexing distraction from the main plot! There were like, 2-3 sides cp I think (not counting those who already married each other/parents), and only one of them has a noticeable amount of appearance. Not to mention, the sides cp were quite entertaining on itself too, and they don't seem to be 'forced' to be there by the author. Gonna list em here (again, spoiler) :

Spoiler

-ML's little brother x a certain team doctor (yes ML's lil bro become a top, it's funny cuz the doctor was also a top in his previous relationship lol). Lmao, their interaction is so f*cking hilarious every time they appear. Y'all gonna love this if you're into enemies-to-lovers and age-gap XD Their first meeting especially, like the whole f*cking studio were in turmoil in the discovery of the doctor's soulmate mark after so many failed relationships he had. They even almost want to call the city tv broadcast just to find his soulmate. And it turns out his (the doctor) soulmate is the brat he fought at the bathroom stall lol.

-An ace foreign volleyball athlete x a retired local volleyball athlete (btw this guy is an exotic beauty, with dark/tanned skin and tattoos to I remember right (or is it piercing?)). Love how they are both unsure about themself at first (even if they know how hot their self are) because of cultural differences, and then when the confession came they just laugh it off in the end. Chris (if the name of the foreign athlete was not wrong in mtl) has such a sweet mouth smh, so it was a surprise he planned to be a nurse after he retires, like, imagine a dashing man with god carved body running around in a hospital XD

-That polo ball pair-players (or is it table tennis?) who were a negative distance soulmates pair lol. These guys has more enemies-to-lovers energies than the lil bro pair, moreover, their distance is negative 15-20 cm lmao, not even a kiss will reach that, so... ;)

[collapse]

The Main Characters:

(Be warned cuz it's gonna be long)

Onto the main characters, we have~

    • Qin Chunxiao (MC/Shou) :
An ex-sprint player who turns to volleyball in his youth after his previous coach got caught up in a drug scandal. This guy won the genetic race and was granted an almost inhuman body constitution. He never gets sick since his birth, even if his whole class was caught up in an epidemic, this guy can still jump around a few full laps without breaking a sweat. When his whole family was food poisoned, he was still fine and dandy even though he ate more of the expired food than his now bedridden family members. His body was so illogically healthy to the point that his blood was asked to be further studied as a vaccine lmao.

In volley, he actually excels in anything, whether it's attack or defense. It is a given he should've been a forefront player, but unfortunately, his height doesn't allow him to reach his full potential, thus, he'll mainly play as the libero.

His personality is quite mature further increased by his 'rebirth', he's also easygoing, yet he still retained the hot-blooded feeling and rebellious tendencies of a teenager in certain situations (sunny little angel eh... well it's still quite apt somewhat, except for the 'little' part unless you're talking about his height lol). You can further see this in his dynamic within the team. He's the soul as well as the dad of the team. Yep, that's right, despite being the youngest, he is in fact a dad of many children (lol). He had all of the team members parent's phone numbers (the coach's wife included) and was often asked to take care (keep tabs) on them. The reason for this was not only because of how MC's ability is the core of their team, but also because of MC's fighting value lol. No one dares to mess with him after a certain incident, thus they gladly become obedient sons in front of MC's majesty and it's not just limited to local teams as well lol (well, except for one, and no, it's not the coach). He's also a bit of a face con, which is probably the reason why he quickly change his mind about not having any relationship with ML lol.

    • (Mei) Lu Xuadong (ML/Gong) :
An up-and-rising artist who struggles his way from the bottom.
Spoiler

From his childhood, he had to bear the burden of his whole family by himself in a remote village, with a supposedly absent father, a mentally challenged mother, and a little sister who still needs his protection. At one point in time in his teenage year, he saw his mother getting "bullied" and decided that it is enough, and goes on to fight those men with a machete (it was uncertain whether he kills or not in this accident), then subsequently escape from the village into the city with his mother in his back and his sister on tow. Even after escaping that village, his life was still riddled with the darkness of society as he tries hard to survive and not be integrated into the filth.

[collapse]

After years of hard work, his career as an artist can finally be stable enough for him to rest his body for a bit but life hit him with a surprise as he discover that he have a soulmate and soon after, life also hit him another bomb, which told him the truth of his birth and how the family he desperately cared for with his entire life was just a mistake.

He is extremely virtuous (the perfect househusband tbh, as he can do anything from cooking to repairing pipes) and mature, to the point he came off as a submissive person sometimes. But there's no way a person who can survive what he has been through is a mentally soft person. Fr, I often wonder how this guy still has the drive to live even when never given the love and attention he deserves after he reached his late twenties. In his past life, this man is so depressed in fact, to the point his nerves and body just slowly shutdowns (his depression was so severe it caused something similar to Parkinson's disease). Mind you, even at this point in time he had been following the doctor's advice to the z, he regularly exercise, eat nutritious food, spent some time for a break in amidst his busy life at work, but no matter how he tries, his body just can't handle it anymore. If it were not for the plane crash, I think he'll eventually die in his thirties tbh.

Though worry not, in this life although he hasn't escaped his 20 years of misfortune, he won't suffer further pain anymore. Directly and indirectly, MC's rebirth causes a butterfly effect in his life. His sister can be saved in time, his brother was not scummed by the liar, and MC's light reignite the fire within him. After the "truth" came out, he decisively drops his career as an artist, decided to spend some time healing himself by going to the northern hemisphere, and he'll come out as a bolder person. Not long after he was taken back by his biological family he won many battles of words against his father, thus in the family both literally and spiritually, he was the unchallenged head of the family despite his father being alive and well.

ML's biological family was an unreliable mess lmao. We got the unreliable father who can't read his script fluently even though his son already raised a board containing the words to words behind the camera and loves to ditch work just because his son is already in charge anyway. The unreliable mother who likes to escape problems and go on vacation to Europe when her family is in its unstable period (when ML was just taken back home). And of course, the unreliable little brother who doesn't want to go to university to chase his artistic career, thinks love is everything, and can be easily deceived (don't worry, he'll change for the better after ML kicks him to intern at a local food factory lmao). Anyway, MC's arrival in his life allows him to be more decisive and unfeeling in his decision for the betterment of the people he cares about.

The relationship:

At first, MC never wanted to knit a romantic or even any type of relationship with ML. He knows well how chaotic the entertainment industry is, as how well-known ML's little brother's mess is in his past life. But because of ML's gesture for saving him in that plane crash and his poor life experiences, MC still decided to wholly help him to get a better fate in life though he does it in incognito (indirectly or with a costume lol). As he sees how ML lives his life, he'll gradually soften and decided to accept ML into his social relations. His romantic feeling for ML will only grow after he reached 17-18, in which we'll see how decisive MC is about his feeling and how he is actually a very romantic person.

Spoiler

After he realizes he likes ML, he directly shows his affection to ML by various romantic means. One of which I'm very moved about is how he'll wait for ML after work and serves his dinner as a waiter, y'know, with candles, roses, and all of that, like dayum, this guy has moves. Btw at first MC want to 'officially' confess to ML in a grand way at a theater, but the plan changed and their confession and first kiss were in a Lego shop lmao.

[collapse]

As for ML, after he realizes he has a soulmate, his upbringing makes him somewhat cautious yet desperate. Cautious because he knows well how humans are, desperate because he's also greedy for a chance to be loved and cared for. After he finally finds out about his soulmate's identity, he goes into full supportive mode lol. ML also likes volleyball so realizing your soulmate is a handsome and high-quality player with good moral of your favorite sport, you can only imagine how happy he is. But then MC (indirectly) expresses his thought to be just a friend for now, as they both have careers to be focused on and they don't know yet whether they are suitable as lovers. ML accepts but with a bit of regret. Still, he'll always go to MC's competitions whenever he could, though his famous identity deters him from attending, which is where the legendary sheep fursuit will come from.
Spoiler

Yep ML will attend MC's competition in a sheep fursuit lmao. Bro is so desperate that one time he ends up with a high fever because of it.

[collapse]

Their dynamic is very good. MC is the light in ML's life, his (MC) alpha-wolf-of-the-pack personality fits well with ML's mature yet introverted characteristics. ML will always chase MC's light whenever he could, and MC will tacitly allow him to do so. After MC's enlightenment, their dynamic will reverse, with MC chasing and pampering ML whenever he could, while ML enjoys the warm love he longs for.

The extras:

  • A Meeting in Yunnan = This is linked to the author's next novel about one of MC's teammates, nicknamed Squid, finding his dream lover in the most unexpected ways (he's gonna get time traveled lmao).
  • If the plane didn't crash = It's exactly what it said, a story of the already battered and injured (physically and physiologically) Qin Chunxiao and Lu Xuandong as they live on their life. As you already expected, it is a bit angsty, and I want to knock sense onto ML's family.
  • If only I could keep running = An alternate universe if Qin Chunxiao continued on Sprint instead of changing to Volleyball. Here, ML never gets kidnapped as well, so he wasn't pressured into inheriting his father's position in the company just to gain a place in the family. So, we'll see how ML will actually join the national volleyball team if he doesn't have a worry in life ever. It's a shame this extra was cut short, probably because of the author's health however : (
  • Proposal History = Qin Chunxiao storytelling his nephews about how he proposed to Lu Xuandong.
About the Covid thing:

Spoiler

Yeah, that's just one of the author's (minor) weaknesses. Sometimes she just adds outrageous settings to her main characters at the end for some reason. Though, I'm going to think it's because the author was going for something bigger. So, almost all of the author's work was set in the same universe, with the rebirth caused by the main characters' death in their previous life, while time travel happens because of unknown natural (?) phenomena. All of these novels were in a modern setting, logical, with no superpowers whatsoever (well, except for their time travel and rebirth). What was different though, in the author's newest novel, there's a hint of an actual god or at least supernatural existence in this universe. And you see, almost all of her main characters work in untapped territories of Earth that were the source of countless prototypes and urban legends (one MC works in a space station, while in this novel, Qin Chunxiao gonna works as a marine biologist in the artic). All of these point to a perhaps future plot?

This was such a good novel 10/10 !!

(Also this novel updates so fast, like I just read this yesterday and when I checked there was already 2 new chapters)

If your looking for a sports novel then this is what you're looking for. It really focuses on MC Qin Chunxiao's journey as an athlete.

... more>> His character is also very admirable, strong will and strong heart as well as his hilarious attitude and approach on things. Like when the plane was crashing he thought

"I should delete my browsing history. Lets die with a good consience" (not a spoiler literally happens in the begining of the novel.)

He and his teams are savages as well. Like damn I love his team and the way his coach is suffering from their idiocacy.

Oh and his volleyball skills, ugh, I want to have his amazing skills, seriously top tier and kinda op but he has disadvantages to balance out the op-ness.

The love interest or ML is also interesting, he had a few appearances so far but you can immediately tell that he is not your typical cold domineering stone faced emotionless ML, he is different I tell you!

Now what I want to know and need is that WHERE IS THE MTL OF THIS OR ATMOST THE FULL TRANSLATION OR ATLEAST THE RAWS. Man I just wanna binge read this so badly 😫😫😭

So please whoever is reading this please tell me the link or smth ANYTHING really. <<less

This has got to be my favorite sports novel yet. It has sportsmanship, teamwork, the main character is awesome and I'm loving his journey in his sport, Volleyball, so far.

The romance here isn't prominent but I love the development that is heading towards and can't wait to see how it develops as the story progress.

I can't wait for more chapters to be translated and especially for there to be an MTL version of it. I want to binge read this dammit!!!! 😆😫🥰🥰🥰🥰

I love sports anime and therefore also sports webnovels, but Chinese danmei almost exclusively focuses on figure skating and there's only so many times I can read Yuzuru Hanyu ripoff BLs.

The MC here is a libero that can also be an attacker - aka he's great at defense and offense. The ML is a former actor/singer.

Both MC's relationship with the ML and his professional career are developed well. The soulmate stuff is a little clunkier - I don't feel like it was implemented particularly naturally and could have used some... more>> more worldbuilding and introduction, but I really like the story overall.

The MC is genuinely like a shounen sports anime protagonist; it's nice to not have a sports BL MC described as "willowy" and "delicate" for once.

There were some jarring parts like the weird immune system stuff, but it's a small portion so you can ignore it. <<less

I really enjoyed this story! As an avid sports manga fan, I was waiting for the day someone would write a sports themed web novel and finally someone did it and it was well done! While the story wasn't without flaws as a whole I'd say this story is definitely worth reading if you like a motivated protagonist who is very career focused and slow burn romances.

If you'd like more details and potential spoilers see my pros and cons for the story below.

The pros: ... more>>
Spoiler

- QCX is such a treat of a protagonist. He's spirited, driven, hard-working, considerate, and caring. Although he's blessed with natural athletic prowess and the foreknowledge that comes with rebirth, he never slacks off in his daily training or personal management. Furthermore, even though he often acts as the pillar of the teams he plays for, he respects both his teammates and opponents and never looks down on them just because he's a reborn person. He heeds the words of his friends, family members, seniors, and coaches and he is genuinely grateful for the wisdom and opportunities that he receives. I think the author does a wonderful job of portraying him as an emotionally mature adult because I've seen too many insufferable novels where reborn and transmigrated protagonists with adult souls regress into IQ deficient 12 year olds because they're in younger bodies.

- Since the story isn't too focused on romance, LXD is eclipsed by QCX as a lead but I also liked his character a lot as a romantic interest. Although LXD falls in love with QCX first, he pursues the latter thoughtfully and cautiously and never crosses any boundaries he shouldn't. For example, he goes to see QCX's games disguised as a mascot character in order to not disturb the surroundings as a public figure. His love is like a gentle stream that quietly polishes the edges in his beloved's heart. It was super heartwarming to see how they slowly transitioned from internet confidantes to friends to finally lovers. I adored the chapters right before they officially get together because they're so fluffy and sweet I almost died of envy.

- Besides our leads, there is a whole cast of colourful characters who are all incredibly endearing (this was very reminiscent of the cast of Haikyuu to me). I'm a big fan of Li Ling who is the best silly golden retriever best friend anyone could ever want. The side pairings were cute too.

- The volleyball knowledge was explained in a way that was relatively easy to understand and the matches weren't that hard to follow even through MTL.

- I really appreciated the fact that the author wasn't xenophobic because sometimes it's so hard to read Chinese sports/esports themed novels since all the foreigners are stereotypically depicted as ignorant and racist villains who deserve to lose every game they play and the Chinese are glorified as perfect superior underdogs. While there were still some moments where the patriotism jumped out, this is probably the only Chinese sports story I've seen where Japanese and Korean people aren't demonized.

The cons:

Spoiler

- The mechanics of soulmates in this world is super confusing and hard to follow. The information is dispensed to readers sporadically and it's not until the very end that it is fully explained how soulmates work. Honestly, I don't think we needed the soulmate trope in this novel at all. It didn't really add to anything besides the fact that it gave the leads an excuse to meet each other. Had the author really wanted to use the soulmate trope I think she should've made it a bigger part of the story right from the get go.

- There were so many competitions and a lot of them had similar names which isn't really the author's fault because I think she referred to actual competitions. However, at a certain point I didn't know which trophy they were competing for anymore.

- QXC having a supernaturally good immune system to the extent that they could study his blood to develop a vaccine to prevent the spread Covid was a weird turn of events. It was nice to see a world where Covid wasn't a big problem but also just super bizarre.

The novel was enjoyable and the translation was excellent. Even those who knew nothing about volleyball would surely be attracted by its story and characters. However, there were too many dubious aspect.

First, the "soulmate" idea was good, but not written very well. I was wondering about it for too long (more than half of the story) before the author decided to uncover the mystery.

Second, some plots went too far over the top ("mythical" according to other reviewer). Although this was a different world (remember about "soulmate" thing)... it was in... more>> contrast with other aspects that stayed true to our normal world logic.

Third, the story became increasingly boring after MC love confession. I wasn't sure how it happened, but I lost the will to read further.

I would like to rate it 4.5 stars, but we can only choose either 4 or 5, so... here we go. <<less

It’s like if Su Zhe from “I became a Big Star After I Quit The Entertainment Industry” went into volleyball (but without a system). Both of the MCs’ even have a track background lmao
