My School Prince Boyfriend Has A Big Problem

Lu Xi is a straight man who transmigrated into a cross-dresser and took on the role of a female supporting character in a sweet campus romance novel, trying his best to compete with the female lead for her boyfriend.

What he needed to do was bully the female lead and get slapped in the face by the male lead.

Offer himself to the male lead and get slapped in the face by the male lead.

Spread rumors and fan the flames, and then get slapped in the face by the male lead again.

Basically, he just had to cause trouble, continuously creating opportunities for the male lead to slap him in the face.

Everything followed the routine of a sweet romance novel, but while the female lead enjoyed the sweetness, he was the routine.

One day, according to the plot, it was time to be slapped in the face again.

Lu Xi placed a deliberately staged photo of the two of them in front of the female lead and said, “Look at this photo. Ji Nian and I have already done that. I’m already his. Please take the initiative to withdraw from this love triangle.”

After his introduction, Lu Xi waited for the male lead to clarify the truth, already preparing his face to be slapped.

The female lead threw the photo at Ji Nian, unwilling to believe it: “Tell me this isn’t true!”

Ji Nian glanced at the photo and then at Lu Xi, who was sitting in the corner playing with his nails.

After thinking for a moment, he advised the female lead, “For your own good, you should withdraw.”

Female lead: “…”

Lu Xi: “… F*ck.”

#I’m worried sick about the male lead’s pursuit of his wife#

At first, Lu Xi refused to accept the ridiculous script.

But after letting loose for a while, he discovered that if he didn’t follow the plot points, someone around him would definitely die, and in a very tragic way.

The sweet campus romance collapsed into a dark thriller story.

Lu Xi had no choice but to follow the script.

However, during the process, he gradually realized that someone seemed to be manipulating the plot development from behind the scenes.

Lu Xi: “We’re almost halfway through the story, and I’m just realizing now that there’s a big problem with my boyfriend.”

Ji Nian: “I admit I’m big, but what’s the problem?”

“…”

This novel contains dark themes, including mu*der, violence, mentions of su*cide, bullying, and sensitive behaviors related to gender. Please read at your own discretion.

Pre-disclaimer: Before I start, I want to say that as far as I've read, this novel is very well translated. I respect the hard work that the translator put in to make this novel available to English readers. Additionally, I have only read 6 chapters. I do not know the future developments in the novel regarding the issue I will address.

Now, on to it.

At first the writing style and the dynamic of the characters and their relationship had me hooked. Until, well, the transphobia was established. For that reason, it... more>> was a struggle to continue reading. Here's the specifics:
Spoiler

At first, I thought it the subject matter would be handled with care. The author recognizes the original owner as a trans individual—the MC concludes that they were presenting as female because of the incongruity experienced with their assigned s*x at birth—and the MC points out that she most likely presented as a girl because of dysphoria. However. There is basically no respect given to this character past this point. The MC was talking with the original's social media agent and discovered that the original owner was trans. Once the readers are brought to this realization, the original owner proceeds to be misgendered at every opportunity. When referenced in past tense, the pronouns used are completely incongruous with her gender identity. The pronouns the author uses in these instances are 'he/him.' And the author created her? But it gets worse. In chapter five, the main character describes the original owner in this fashion: "Lu Xi suspected he had entered a girl's room but then thought that the original owner had identity recognition issues, always believing themselves to be a woman." This is, in my opinion, an extremely flippant way to approach this subject. 'Always believing themselves to be a woman' sounds to me that the author is insinuating her identity would and will not be respected by anyone else if they knew her assigned s*x at birth; that her gender identity has no validation besides it being a 'disorder.' Additionally, the original owner is referred to by her present guardian, her cousin, as a cross dresser rather than a member of the trans community. Here: "In his view, Lu Xi, as a pure cross dresser, wouldn't have the guts to get into a fight. At most, he'd just have a quarrel with others."

There is a very big distinction between cross dresser and trans, not that there is anything at all wrong with either. However, cross dressing is referred to as 'cross' dressing because it generally applies to someone who identifies as one gender dressing in clothes people associate with the opposite gender. Using it as a substitute for transgender basically bypasses acknowledging their preferred gender entirely, by saying: he's a boy who just likes to wear feminine clothes—rather than: she's a girl. Not to mention the fact that she was misgendered yet again.

[collapse]

Now, time for the post-disclaimers: In China, the LGBTQ community is generally much less accepted than in say the US, particularly by the government. It could be the case that the author wished to portray such discrimination through the attitudes of the various characters in the book towards the trans character's identity. However, be that as it may, if that was what the author was going for, then I believe it would make sense for them to respect the characters pronouns when she is being referenced through narration, even if it follows the MC's perspective. I would think that they would at least make the main character more understanding of the transgender community. However, this is not the case. The most the author ever goes to validate the original's gender identity is to use 'they/them' on very specific occasions, at least at this point in the story.

This leads to my second disclaimer. I have only read six chapters of this book. I do not know if it gets better or if the misgendering is intentional because the author plans to validate the trans character's gender in future. Take what I've described and make your own judgements while reading.

And I finally want to note that transphobia often originates from ignorance. It is not that they are intent on being a bad person or cause harm, it is simply because they do not fully understand the matter nor the harm that they are causing.

In the end, my opinion is this: if you are going to write a trans character, please give them accurate representation and respect. After all, they are people too, and deserve just as much respect in media as anyone else. <<less

Absolutely loved it, this novel puts such an incredibly unique spin on the genre and the mystery keeps you guessing to the end!

I know some reviewers dropped due to the apparent transphobia, but I had a different opinion on it. Initially, I felt pretty uncomfortable too. I didn't like how Lu Xi kept categorizing things as exclusive to a gender and the way he thinks about some things (he thinks his agent is like a "sissy", he speaks about mental illnesses a little crassly, he understand's the OG is truly... more>> a woman at heart, but acts repulsed by the feminine things the OG would do that he is being expected to do). Even the way Lu Xi treats being gay felt a little homophobic.

It took getting through a good chunk of the book before it became apparent that Lu Xi was none of these phobics, and was actually pretty accepting. He doesn't use the right terms because he doesn't live in an era or country that does. He rejects anything that doesn't fit the norm for himself because he just wants to live a simple life, and some things like being trans he doesn't understand because he's never experienced or been exposed to what that feels like. What convinced me was how he treats the people around him, he never spews hate nor does he treat people he doesn't understand differently.

Other characters also have differing levels of understanding, but all the ones that matter are very accepting. OGs parents were going to pay for her s*x change surgery, OGs cousin seems to have a lack of understanding but tries to take care of her all the same, OGs agent is very accepting and ML barely blinks when he finds out.

I don't know the author's actual views and yes they could have handled some things more sensitively (all the shitting on makeup is honestly just unnecessary but so freakin 2010s), but all in all I'd say as long as you read this as a book taking place in the 2010s you'll really enjoy it. The words may not be right, but hearts seem mostly in the right place <<less

I normally never leave comments on novels, but I think I have to for this one because people are praising this so highly and saying to “stop being sensitive.”

I have to agree with a lot of other comments about this novel... the transphobia is too much. I understand that China has a very different viewpoint about trans people than the country I live in. However, I don’t think that negates the harm that is done when undertaking the task of writing something you don’t know a lot about. The author’s... more>> blatant disregard for discussing the serious topic of being trans in an unwelcoming environment ultimately makes the story unpalatable to me. Maybe it gets better, but I wouldn’t waste my time reading through poor writing to hopefully see the author not treat the OG Lu Xi poorly, especially when it’s from the viewpoint of the MC. This is a fictional story and why not make it a nice world for trans people?

Spoiler

The cousin viewing his cousin as a “confused boy” made me so furious. Being trans is not a confusing phase that is only for the mentally ill, that rhetoric is absolutely disgusting and needs to be viewed for what it is: transphobic. Furthermore, the ORIGINAL LU XI IS TRANS. She is a trans woman that wanted to get s*x reassignment surgery in Italy. That is NOT just being a “cross dresser.” Crossdressing and being trans are very different things and it deserves to be treated and written about as such.

Now the only reason why I'm writing this review is because some of the review section was a bit too transphobic for my liking and convinced me to drop it. In the actual novel, the MC transmigrated not into a cross dresser's body but a trans woman's body. Note to everyone being a cross dresser and being trans woman are 2 different things. Now the MC began immediately misgendering the OG!char and thinks that she has a mental illness for being trans. And then when the MC interacted with the... more>> OG's manager who speaks in a more high pitched tone, MC preety much disgusted by the fact that he speaks in a "girlish" tone. The MC also exhibits the typical straight man attitude of 'Oh why do women wear so much makeup." which is also really fun. Honestly its kinda sad that no one will miss the OG person and will prefer the MC instead. <<less

Alright so, I have very mixed feelings about this story.

Let’s be positive, so I’ll list the pros first:

- I loved the concept of mixing a cliched transmigration bl with a psychological thriller type plot, and I’m super invested right now.

... more>> - It’s well written so far, where everyone has their mysteries, and so many easily overlooked details are great foreshadowing

- the relationship was a bit fast for me but it’s pretty cute (?)

And now the cons (be warned, they’re pretty major) :

- This is undeniably transphobic. For all the reviewers who have been like “blah blah blah we don’t know if OG was actually trans” um did any of you read the story? OG was literally going to get a s*x reassignment surgery.

- Also portrayal of mental illness is pretty damn harmful. Lots of romanticising manic tendencies, and classifying transgender as ‘gender dysphoria’ is insulting and an outdated way people marginalised transgenders by deeming them mentally ill. I’m also pretty sure the MC uses the term “shen jing bing” to describe mental illness, which is basically what Chinese people use to call people crazy. Kinda insensitive ngl.

- Thirdly (this is more personal beef I've got with the story) it’s anti-makeup and stereotypes a lot of people. One line I really hated was something along the lines of “Normal straight men shouldn’t know about makeup.”

Yep so thanks for reading bye :) <<less

It's not bad for a suspense romance novel. The author made gratuitous use of red herrings and hid the truth in a few passing comments. I think the key here is that the simplest answer might be the truest. The mu*derer made a lot of flaws that the protagonist did not pick up on simply because it had nothing to do with him. The signs are clear once you know what happened and I honestly had a good impression of the way the case ends.

I think the author may have... more>> changed one detail or may have decided to hide the truth about what is "wrong" with the school Prince from the protagonist to the very end.
Spoiler

I started suspecting the male lead of forming a secondary personality after being traumatized by his mother's death, long before a side character developed such an illness. The odd jealous remarks to the woman around his father, his father's overly strong reaction to shut down this behavior, and his episode in the bathroom talking to himself. He might have had bipolar disorder since he was a child, but it is clearly not all he has going on. His calm and knowing reaction to the roommate acting as their dead crush honestly confirmed it for me. The main character accepting that all of his boyfriend's behavior was just the bipolar diagnosis alone is a bit sus, but he did not see the same situations as the reader. It IS clear from clues that the male lead let go of his mother's grudges by the end of the book. He may have felt no need or desire to inform his partner of anything but the ongoing mental health issue. He was resistant to revealing even the bipolar disorder after all. His dead mother (or whatever other personalities he might have had) are staying buried in that grave his father pulled him and his lover from. It's not great behavior to hide such a thing, but it is in line with he and his father's characters to keep it from the protagonist. He wants to present his best side to his lover and his father doesn't want the shameful aspects of his son's illness to get out to his enemies.

[collapse]

I liked the ending of the case, but the ending of the actual story itself was quite weak. Did the protagonist's biological parents accept money from his father-in-law in exchange for their children? Because that is what seemed to be implied with some foreshadowing that never got followed up on... in this book. You see, the author apparently wrote two sequels to this story. They are set presumably before and after the final timeskip that also managed to skip some key details. The first sequel is a lighthearted campus romance, aka at least part of it occurs alongside of this plot. One of the side characters from this book gets tricked in an online romance and kind of fades away from this story, presumably because the author prepared to write them their own book. Some of the Chinese readers of this book said in the comments that this other book is "not bad." The characters themselves were engaging so I think it does have promise.

However, the final scene of this book has very little to do with either the first or the second book. It is instead dedicated to the other sequel: an axed story about a dead lover coming back to haunt another side character that only appears in a handful of scenes. This inexplicable final scare with a sudden ghost makes very little sense in the context of the story and even undermines the authors own
Spoiler

attempt to provide the mu*ders with a serious non-supernatural ending.

[collapse]
It is doubly not worth it because the author gives up on writing this third book, wasting the good ending they set up here. This book is fine, just ignore the final paragraphs of bad advertisement. 😂

I think I will try the campus sequel someday. I do think this book might have been better if it had not been split into 'two' (since keeping that plot secret forced a time skip into an otherwise great ending), but the side couple IS good enough to warrant their own book and it cut down on the bloat that often accompanies side plots. <<less

The title doesn't lie... But definitely not in Comedic sense... 🙃

The summary is trying... No scenes based on that, but the plot did goes to that kind of feelings. Aka MC really did tried to follow the plot to avoid more threat and casualty.

The ML'S plot is Beyond any of expectations. His personality and problems really made all of us sad for him. He's one of the most shown as flawed and average human who we really can feel so bad for him. He's Genius but he also has this... more>> Big BIG Problem and the Scary plot even make it bigger. And yet, because of it, he also meet MC who become his somewhat anchor; ground him and comforting his problem and sadness.

Another of his plot is his Father. At first you HATE him... And then slowly you somewhat like his actions... But then more explanation and then you feel your rage rise again but also big wave of sadness. I wonder how the author would drag this family plot to the end. I just pray it was Satisfying enough.

MC's personality though, I love how he's not actually comedic character, not too calm. He IS rather calm. But definitely not Carefree. If people want to lable him Carefree just because he's comfortable as Underachiever, that's not good enough.

His personality is also complex. His feelings everytime he mentioned his previous older brother (that I don't remember if he was still alive or had die in his OG world). How he act around ML. And especially when his shock and fear from the mu*der and more threat.

The NOVEL has Nano nano flavors. It's Comedy, but also Drama, and somewhat Psychological, and absolutely Dark.

The author clearly know what they're doing when they make us feel suspicious of some characters.

Okay, put aside the heavy plot, what about the relationship? I would say don't worry. Because really, I felt like the Straight Uke/Seme tag was a Bull. MC was already comfortable with ML since beginning. And not a little times he keep praising ML's appearance in his mind. ML himself always attached to MC. If anything, when he find out his gender, he grow even more clingy. MC and ML found each other's present comforting really when they were down.

But then why the Low rating?

It has Gender Issue sensitivity. I can't say the author doing it right nor it was wrong. If anything what the author doing is just to make Characters act like what many realistic people do. Like how MC clearly didn't get the Sensitivity of Identity of the OG!Owner while the story did mentioned how the OG!Family being supportive about the OG!owner's feelings.

But because the main story is NOT about Gender things, the author didnot explore that stuff and just mentioned in passing at the beginning of the story. But MC doesn't act like disgusted or anything with what the previous owner did. He just don't understand. And now he's the one who had to live this Heavy life and Carry this Plot, he has every right to feel comfortable in his new body. Because really, he even ready to die again if he don't follow the plot, and yet the one who had to die or get hurt is NOT HIM. And our lovely MC is NOT INDIFFERENT OR SOCIOPATH NOR APATHETIC! So he does his best now.

Anyway this novel was truly one of rare kind I'm serious. I would say it was beyond any of my expectations in the best way and I pray so goddam hard the rest of the story is Satisfying till the end!! 🙏🙏🙇🙇🙇🙏🙏 <<less

I am going to be honest, I was searching for cross dressing novels in the BL category. They are so difficult to find, mostly the ones with femenine shous. But something I noticed is that, most CN novels with a Shou cross dresser (or femenine for that matter) treat this fact like the plague and is something extremely bad.

Like, the hook for me was the synopsis, see the character try to live like in the novel doing cross dressing, I didn't expect much but holy moly, it got bad so... more>> fast. By chapter 5 I was totally let down by this novel.

Now, I have seen some reviews that say this novel is rather good and if you don't mind this depiction or you didn't came here searching for the same as me then you are good. But I already know this novel is not going to get better (at least for the reason I started reading) so is a good bye for me. <<less

Really, really mind the tags. And the summary. It got pretty dark in quite alot of places. It's got mu*der, mental illness, bullying, domestic violence :')

Got hooked and stayed up to MTL, thanks translator-san...

Solid 4.5/5, the only thing unsolved was Lu Xi's "book transmigration", which detracted the plot a bit since it was what drove Lu Xi so crazy. Otherwise the plot and character development is *chefs kiss*. MC and ML is super cute together. The side characters growth also good. It reads kind of dark, with the whole... more>> violence, mu*der and mental illness, but it's super hopeful, step by step they progress until their lives got sorted, they got better and better, and all the mysteries solved. <<less

I have read it in 3h till ch45. I saw some review and decided to say some of my opinion this may content a little bit of spoiler and I don't know how to hidden it so please bear with me.

The MC transmigrated from diff word into this world body which as you have read, he is a cross dressing. One of the comments said sth like he is clearly disgusted when he talk about make up and stuff, I think they interpreted it wrongly. The MC is acting like... more>> that because in his world he have never been a relationship and clearly he is straight. Imagine you live your life and now you transmigrated into some novel with cross dressing and is a villain. I think the first thing you gonna do is definitely stop the cross dressing act because why do you have to be one if you are not one in the first place? This is not ancient setting. Mind you a teenager who like to act tough on the outside and sweet in the inside, you think what is their first reaction related to doing make up and have to act as a cross dresser?

Overall it is still chapter45, but there are already thriller things going on. I feel like this is just the real beginning of the plot. Give it a try because both the MC and ML they are likable and have their own stories. <<less

Despite reminders, I keep forgetting that this book does not have the horror genre tagged to it.

Well, yes, there are ghosts appearing, mu*ders, and campus horror stories, but all these are the result of the characters' mental illnesses and innate fears.

The characters in the story (including side characters) have enough detail to their lives such that it feels like they are actual characters living lives outside of the plot, which I enjoy.

One complaint I might have is the initial disinterest/dislike MC holds for ML. Because ML is extremely dependant on... more>> MC, if MC doesn't take care when interacting with ML, ML goes on a downward spiral. But I liked it when MC figured out this trait and started caring more about ML's volatile emotions. <<less

The moment I saw suspense in the tags, I was excited so I had it in my expectations and wasn't blindsided by the sudden killing. Then the killer first showed up and my brain was literally "Ah, if there's a killer it would be [them]" and it turns out that [they] were indeed the killer, no creativity or anything. I even started hoping it would be the ML ffs bc if it's [them], it'd be really obvious because EVERYBODY is suspicious EXCEPT them.

The author's writing is truly subpar, not to... more>> mention that they're very transphobic as well, which I had to ignore because I was genuinely interested with the story, hoping it would at least be a bit unique and not cliche, only to be disappointed again and again by such foreseeable events that it's not even funny...

I do appreciate translator Milk though! So you could say the 3 stars is for her lol. <<less

It's hard for me to rate this because objectively, it's a decent story, but I had a hard time reading this because of how it was written.

Firstly, this is tagged horror and there will be mu*der mysteries happening later on, but I can't get over the fact that everything was way too convenient for the MCs. No one was really questioning their changes or weird actions.

Secondly, there were loads of offensive stereotype surrounding certain topics that was not handled well and a constant justification of disrespecting og!body just because she... more>> was trans. Honestly it would've been better if the author established MC as someone who was close-minded from the beginning. It would've explained his rejection to his body. However, he's portrayed as someone who has a high tolerance for social outcasts so his character inconsistence has to stem from somewhere else. Thankfully the writing stopped focusing on this and more on the mystery plot later, but there's just an innate negativity surrounding the topic that's hard to shake off.

To clarify, I'm not seriously accusing the author of anything, maybe it's just the way they write. I'm not sure what their stand is on this, but the meaningless offensive jabs soured my reading experience. It's like reading about China's patriotism or propaganda while they put down other countries for no reason in other novels. Some authors purposely does that to increase view counts and to not have their novels axed on jj, while some are just biased. It's hard to tell. Anyway, it's overboard and overdone.

I had high hopes for it but it just isn't as I'd initially hoped for a novel that was parachuting itself on dark psychology. I have to admit the author does write well. It'd have been so much better for me if it was just a thriller "campus" romance without the extra plot devices. If you weren't put off by the writing you'd probably enjoy this. <<less

I'd rate it 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Why only 3.5?

- Well it started off pretty good and interesting, has a lot of very sweet moments, scary moments, and ny favorite— an indulgent ML. However, I noticed there were some plot holes and parts that made me really frustrated overall.

1. Plothole 1

Spoiler

At the beginning of the story, Ji Nian and a Criminal Psychologist had a match rate of over 90% for their criminal profiling of the mu*derer of student Lin Yuezhi (I will refer to her as LZ for convenience). They came to the conclusion that there were 2 mu*derers, with one being a "Man able to easily overpower a girl, is effeminate, has OCD, and is smart." And the second one is "A student, one of those so-called freaks or outcasts."

The student issue was handled first. Quite clearly we as readers have the suspects Wang Qiaoer (LZ's chubby female friend) who grinned suspiciously upon seeing the body, and Liu Siyi, who was relieved. Later, the police identifies Chenbin (LZ's chubby male admirer) as a suspect and even we as the reader come to believe it considering he stole LZ's head and some time later, hides it in a pot outside Ji Nian's room (ew) but during the interrogation, we find out he didn't actually kill her, he just discovered the head and stole it, leaving the case of the student mu*derer unsolved.

[collapse]

2. Plothole 2

Spoiler

The organized mu*der wasn't touched until the end of the series, and the author points it at School Doctor Meng Haiwei. She is the pretty overqualified doctor who graduated from Princeton University with a Master's degree in Psychology. She is the sister of the previous school nurse whose 6 year old child was killed by Lin Yuezhi, Xiao Ruiyang, and Qu Feng. We're told that MHW committed the mu*ders in order to exact revenge on the 3 for causing the demise of her sister's family. This is in line with previous statements that perhaps the motive was revenge. But you'd have to understand that "their motive was probably revenge" only started getting mentioned halfway through the story. MHW also doesn't match the previous descriptions, she's not strong enough to easily overpower a man, nor is she an effeminate man, in fact, she's a woman! MHW gets arrested (poor officer Shao, I could tell he liked her) but her accomplice never was. She was the one who attacked Lu Xi, but if memory serves right, there was 2 of them, so then what happened to her accomplice??? What about the student who killed the girl??

[collapse]

I think the author probably changed their plans after writing the first 20 chaps or smth bcs the main mystery and the answers didn't line up properly for me.

Aside from that it's a pretty good story, give it a try haha. <<less

Really good, it changes a lot from the typical high school story (that I love, I dont mind clichés) but with a mystery, horror elements added and all... Since horror is also a genre that I really like to read, it was really nice to see it here (i had goosebumps haha) even more when I wasnt expecting it !

Anyway give it a try !

How should I say this?

first, I want to say. This is not a bad story. It is pretty good.

second, I almost want to drop it out because seriously I hate the push and pull relationship the most! So be warned!

third. I felt like I read into a world hopping story in different story arc. You know those systems story just without a system. Because the story compose of mu*der, mystery, love, and pixiedust! Joke. There are no pixiedust. But anyway there are also gaming and entertainment plus ghost story adventure!... more>> It was fun but still I hate the push and pull love part! It is too much for me!

fourth. I knew I was right! Iguess the killer right! Buwahahaha! (Evil laugh emoticon) I guess it at first but tried to convince myself that it would be better if not that person. But I feel like that person has the most weird point! Anyway the thing is. I feel bad for that person but seriously I don’t know what will I do if I were in that person case.

so thats all. The story was nice and some people will finally find solace for their depressison and anxiety but some will have a harder time. Everything is for the future! Come on ! Time to try it! Be a part of the push and pull love story with a mixture of games, entertainment and mu*der mystery! <<less
